Book Description

An hour by train north of Rotterdam, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos preside over the 45-person UN Studio they founded in 1998. To the tune of one partner's proclamation that "the box is dead," they have spent the intervening years conducting a network of researchers and specialists in architecture, urban development, and infrastructure, whose goal it is to create perceptive projects which seamlessly weld together brief, construction, infrastructure, circulation, form, and space. Their Erasmus Bridge, a sinuous arc of roadway suspended from a single soaring pylon, la Star Wars, has become the icon of a new Rotterdam. Their science center for Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, holds itself erect with a Euclidean grid of beams and columns, a structure van Berkel describes as "a sock being pulled back on itself." Following the success of their three-volume publication Move, and in search of new perspectives and concepts, UN Studio presents UNFOLd. Complete with documentation of the firm's most recent projects, UNFOLd takes a critical look at a welter of hitherto unpublished designs, including the restructuring of the station area in Arnhem, the generating station in Innsbrck, the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance laboratory in Utrecht, and the competition-winning design for the Ponte Parodi in Genoa. Draped with an ultra-personal layer, UNFOLd offers an immersion in the firm's design process through texts by Bos, and experiments in association and out-of-the-rut architectural photography.

3 out of 5 stars UNfold - @unstudio.com.......2003-10-29

This publication pales in comparison to van Berkel's first book - MOVE. Everything written is documented almost exactly on the firm's free website. UNstudio has much more to offer in terms of theory, process, and product than what they have demonstrated with Unfold. I personally want to see more drawings - one can't document a project and not put in massive amounts of plans and sections.

    Book Description

Since the introduction of the "Kodak" in 1888, the family photograph has become the family's primary instrument of self-knowledge and representation-the means by which family memory is continued and perpetuated. Such pictures tend to follow rigid conventions which seem to consolidate and perpetuate dominant familial myths and ideologies, supporting a self-representation of the family as stable and happy, static and monolithic. InThe Familial Gaze, 22 experts-some themselves photographers, while others are writers, critics, theorists and filmmakers-scrutinize family photographs to reveal their power to shape our personal memories and self-conceptions, and expose the cultural impact of private images. But these writers also show the often surprising and imaginative resistance of such photographs to social and aesthetic conventions. This startlingly original book reveals family photography to be a truly compelling and new field of inquiry. The result is a pathbreaking exploration of the centrality of the photographic image in contemporary visual aesthetics, and an analysis that will now stand at the forefront of contemporary cultural theory.

5 out of 5 stars Just got done reading this..........2002-10-15

and this book is amazing! The first story "Love Song" is a twist on most abusive relationships, this time the woman being the abuser. It was mind boogling at how the man just took her abuse like that, instead of fighting back verbally or physically. "Jewels of the Seaside" was a bit confusing toward the beginning, and very mind blowing at the end. "The Signal Goes Blink-Blink" is an extrememly touching story in my opinion, and it shows that some people have a change of view after a life threating experience. "The Skin of Her Heart" was too short for my taste, but it was enjoyable, and I think most people can relate to the main character. This book is really worth buying, and though I am a person who reads a book once, I will be reading this agian.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it in English.......2001-08-13

I'll come clean. I'm the translator of this volume, so I couldn't give it a lower rating. (On the other hand, there are manga I've translated which I *wouldn't* give good reviews, but in such a case I'd review anonymously. ^_^ ) While translating for Viz (I only stopped because I became too busy with teaching and had trouble meeting deadlines), I was fortunate to be able introduce several "shoujo manga" (Japanese girls' and women's comics) to the English-speaking world. The first compilation of these, "Four Shojo Stories" is unfortunately out of print (though you may be able to find it on BookFinder.com). Hagio Moto's "A-A'" is a wonderful series of interconnected short stories by the great Hagio Moto, but, being science fiction, it's almost too easy to import. What I had always wanted to do was to translate "real" shoujo manga, which is to say stories of human relationships that don't rely on the trappings of science fiction or fantasy in order to be accepted by English-reading audiences. The title story of this volume is just such a story, and then some. "Love Story" is the crystallization of the white-hot intensity of Nishi's early work. Ths story illustrates, with frightening (yet compelling) realism, the old song lyric: "You always hurt the one you love." "Jewels of the Seaside" and "The Signal Goes Blink Blink" are tongue-in-cheek fun (and you'll be glad of that, after "Love Song"), but the finale, "The Skin of Her Heart," is a quiet, moving vignette that is only incidentally science fiction (in a Bradbury-Tiptree-LeGuin vein). I'm quite proud of this translation, and I hope you'll like it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for relaxing and unwinding!.......2000-04-23

Love Song is a collection of four short stories by shoujo artist Keiko Nishi. The first story, "Love Song", is about a girl who knows only physical violence as a way of expressing her love. The second story, "Jewels of the Seaside", is about three sisters who fall for the same guy. The third story, "The Signal Goes Blink Blink", is about a young man who is often ostracized and bullied by his peers. Later, it is discovered that he possesses wondrous healing powers. The last story, ""The Skin of Her Heart", is about a girl who seems to be trapped in the perpetual routine which is her life.

I don't regret buying this book. I found it to be refreshingly different and relaxing, the kind of reading I'd want to do while lounging on a lazy afternoon. Love Song doesn't have swords or sorcery, it's basically good story-telling coupled with lovely and uncluttered art. These stories make you think and feel, with characters who are as real as the next person. The treatment is quite mature, but not in the sense that it'd contain sexual or other explicit stuff. Rather, the maturity pertains to the emotional level these stories convey. There's also a nice sprinkling of light moments and comical situations. It's truly a unique manga experience, which can be likened to reading a novel. I wouldn't recommend it for those who are looking for action and excitement though... this just isn't that kind of manga.

5 out of 5 stars A good read for the girls!.......2000-04-12

A beautifully drawn graphic novel with original and captivating stories.

This manga will be an automatic favourite with girls as it contains both romantic stories and stunning tales of adventure.

      Book Description

The audacity of driving a horseless carriage from coast to coast in the early years of the 20th century is hard to imagine in an age of superhighways and global positioning systems. Roads might be nothing more than muddy ruts made by wagon wheels; sources of gasoline or replacement parts were few and agonizingly far between; frequent repairs and tire changes were necessary; and the traveler was subject to the whole range of nature's perils and discomforts.

For a woman to attempt the trip was, at the time, a jaw-dropping event. Yet in 1909, 22-year-old Alice Ramsey and three female companions piled into a Maxwell in New York City, and 59 days later they triumphantly rolled into San Francisco. A few years later silent film star Anita King would become the first woman to make the transcontinental drive solo. These and other early coast-to-coast drives proved women's growing independence, as well as the automobile's long-distance viability.

Detailed accounts of five coast-to-coast drives make up this lively history. Drawing from plentiful contemporary newspaper reports and the women's own words, author Curt McConnell recounts the bold adventurers' experiences day by day and mile by mile.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener.......2000-11-18

Although I was familiar with Alice Ramsey's 1909 trip, I was pleasantly surprised at the detail of the notes regarding Alice's and the other ladies' trips. For the serious researcher these notes are indispensable! Although I was not so familiar with the other ladies save Blanche Stuart Scott, Mr. McConnel provides much insight into their travels and is able to make a research book as enjoyable as an adventure novel. Blanch made her way into San Diego and garnered several paragraphs in 2 issues of the San Diego Motor News. One thing Mr. McConnel overlooked, according to the Motor News, Blanche's trip had been free of serious accidents until she reached the seaside town of Pacific Beach. "The accident, the first and only serious one, occurred at Pacific Beach, was due to a bit of careless driving when any thought of care had been banished from her mind." Since the author of this article was a salesman and soon to be owner of the Willys dealership in San Diego, he is excused, I guess, from giving us more details. Mr. McConnel makes it prefectly clear throughout this book that "company men" were less than forthright when describing the exploits of their female drivers (even my favorite, Alice Ramsey). I was annoyed however to learn of Willys-Overland's and Blanche's attempts to ignore Alice's trip. All in all a fine book, carefully (as far as I can determine) researched and certainly entertainly written. Michael Miller, Education Director, San Diego Automotive Museum

3 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect reenactor reference.......2005-03-25

Like Embleton's other Europa Militaria title, Medieval Military Costume, this book is informative and crammed with glorious full-color photographs of serious reenactors. However, because there is less definitive information available about Viking-period reenactment, particularly about period costume, some of the photographs are misleading (for example, a number of the women depicted wear the "two pieces of cloth" recreated style of apron dress, a version which arose from a mistranslation and has now been generally discredited). Still, the book is inspiring, and I'm glad I own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Find.......2004-12-05

I happened upon this book at the local bookstore. It has since become one of my favorite reference books. As a historical costume maker, this book has been a great aid to me. The images are wonderful and the descriptions are very clear. I would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent photos, a great resource!.......2001-11-14

This hard-to-find volume of color photographs, many of which I believe were produced by the Regia Anglorum, are well worth the purchase price of this book - especially if you're a re-enactor. You can see details quite well, and if you're wanting to make your own Norse crafts this is an excellent resource. Don't pass it up!

5 out of 5 stars Good reference for Reenactors.......2000-04-25

While I found the history to be a bit light, the photographs are worth the asking price. Not only are arms and armor featured, but also photos of clothing, cookware and equipment. The full color photos of the reenactors are noted by the authors, and even a few historical discrepencies pointed out. All in all this would make good reference material for reenactors and Faire enthusiasts.

This is THE book on the Fox Wars, the second round in the clash of the French and British Empires over North America. I would recommend reading W.J. Eccles' "Frontenac: The Courtier Governor" before reading this. This is an incredible book. Edmunds and Peyser did a wonderful job. All of their knowledge comes from the records written by the French themseles during the conflict. Recommended to me by an expert on the subject.

The Fox River/Wisconsin River road between Green Bay and the fur-rich Mississippi River was blocked by Mesquakie toll-collectors in the early 18th century. Here is an account of the French manipulation of trinket-greedy native warriors to break the Mesquakie blockade which eventually degenerates into cannibalistic genocide.

It's interesting that Bros has inspired such vehement reactions in the reviewers below but that should tell you he's on to something.

Bros is a difficult read. He is clearly not a great writer and does not always do a good job explaining his ideas. But I agree that once you sift through his prose you will find that he does an excellent job of tearing apart the underpinnings of modern physics. If you think that modern physics is the pinnacle of human thought you will not enjoy this book and probably will not understand it either.

As for the reviewer below who concludes that "logic does not apply" to physics, that is technically true, but logic does indeed apply to the manner in which we use our intellects to arrive at those "laws". Bros argues, successfully I believe, that the thought processes scientists have used to arrive at the modern "laws" of physics are not completely logical. And therefore the "laws" of physics are not "laws" and need to be reevaluated in the light of logical thought.

I think it's clear that Bros will be ignored now but 50-100 years from now he will recognized as a courageous genius. If you don't understand how he uses logic, don't worry about it, you're in the same boat as 99.9% of the human race.

1 out of 5 stars Complete Lunatic Blather.......2005-02-06

The one positive review of this new age blather, the one that praises it's LOGIC, is what proves the absurdity of this book. Anyone with any understanding of physics beyond the laws of Newton knows that logic does not apply. How logical is Special Relativity or quantum mechanics? These theories are so counterintuitive it makes one's head spin, but that certainly does not render them false. This book only makes for good reading at the Burning Man festival or UFO conventions. Please save your time and money and pass on it.

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant.......2005-01-15

Bros is an extremely intelligent writer who has somehow managed to shake off the weight of mainstream scientific political correctness and give us a better look at how the universe may really be organized.

The reviews below that claim Bros gives no scientific support for his arguments completely miss the mark. Bros uses LOGIC, impeccable logic in most cases, to show that many areas of mainstream science are lacking in any logical foundation. You do not need a scientific citation to establish the validity of a logical statement, but you do need to be able to THINK LOGICALLY, a trait that the reviewers below lack as well as most American scientists and almost all American students. Bravo to Bros for having the intellect and the courage to attack the most basic concepts of modern scientific thought.

1 out of 5 stars horrific, nonsensical run on illogical mish mash,PSYCHOTIC.......2000-05-31

i happen to agree with most if not all of the authors contentions, unfortunately his books are written in a long nonsensical run on type of sentance and he offers not a single example of evidence for ANYTHING! ...this book is written (no JOKING) like a serial killer with half a mind sitting in a cell writting his world conspiracy manifesto..I swear all jokes aside this book is written in such a jumbling irrational manner i can narry fathom ANY publisher accepting it under any circumstances....the way and means in which the book is written should be a study for psychologists for how a disturbed mind works and writes..This is no joke or pun...This book is HIGHGLY disturbing..

          2 out of 5 stars Nebulous.......1999-06-13

The book is well organized, and offers much information, but it somehow misses the intented impact that the author promises. It has mass but is still a "light-weight".
