At $29 or less, this book is being given away. This is a museum-quality book in terms of the paper, the photographs, the lay-out, and the cover.

I bought this book in part because land is becoming extremely scarce around the great universities and the central business districts, and I was looking for something to help me think through how to persuade a university to let me put a building into a hill or under a playing field.

This book does that. It is a very fast read, the photographs are priceless--worth 10,000 words each as the Chinese would say--and the only thing I did not find in this book were architectural specifics and photos of underlying infrastructure (pump rooms, air cleaning rooms, etc.)

If you are contemplating the need for squeezing a building into an area that is down to the "do not disturb" green space, or if you are contemplating how to exploit existing mines, caverns, or other underground options, this exquisite book is not only useful as a tool for reflection, it will help you "make the sale" to skeptical others you have to get on board.

The author provides a list of 50 places to visit with addresses, telephone numbers, and web sites, a fine resource section for more reading, and an excellent index.

This is an all-around world-class book that is easily worth $49 or more.

Good intro to U.S. underground buildings.......2006-03-13

This book has many short, easy-to-read sections about general topics relevant to building underground, and about many specific examples in the United States. Unfortunately, there is not room to go into much detail about all the examples, but this book is definitely a good starting point. Well illustrated with color photographs.

Taken the the next level.......2003-10-30

This book is filled with wonderful pictures that augment the authors descriptions of underground buildings. She writes with wit and demonstrates that undergound buildings have many benefits, including financial and asthetic ones. This book is well worth a read as a detailed resource of information on this topic, as well as being an entertaining "coffee table" book. She explores this issue, which is more common than the average person would believe, and takes it to the next level.

Good basic "facts of existence" & pictures........2004-09-24

For First Edition: This book has many construction dates, history, and pictures of Leica lenses. Includes reasonably big pictures of many lenses to give you the sense of physical character of the lenses. Seems to cover all old lenses and new up to 1994. Only seems to have information on 35mm ASPH and not other Asph lenses or on the newer lenses. For the used buyer you should get the Leica Pocket Book by Erwin Puts with this or before this book. Sartorius book "Identifying Leica Lenses" is also helpful for used buyer. Also has a list of serial numbers up to 1988. Includes info on old leica copy equipment and many other accessories with pictures of much but not all items. It has Visoflex information. Includes R & L body information and pictures. Production numbers given when available. Lacks opinion comments which can be a blessing or frustrating depending on what you want. I wanted opinion or reputation of lenses which this does not attempt to cover so I give it a 4. Others wanting a construction facts book may rate it a 5.

Extremely Useful.......2006-06-18

I spent two years picking up small items for the Leica Viso system and other traditional Leica items like adapters for filters on older lenses. This book was a tremendous aid. The informational content is brief and many but not all pictures are shown. Highly recommended. I also used the Dennis Laney book "Leica Collectors Guide".

Since no one book that I own has pictures of all items, having more than one book's reference on the same item, increased the possibility of finding a picture or comment. Leica has many old gadgets. The search can be as fun as the ownership.

For those who can afford it more complete books may be available. Try

Each story projects limitless character imagery, and each muse experiences his/her own specific crisis to overcome, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and shipwrecks. Readers will take journeys through different time eras, cultures, and continents. A must read! Too many details to mention without giving away the plots.

Marvin Gersh was my son's pediatrician 30+ years ago. His down-to-earth caring approach to child care is well reflected in this book. Helpful hints as well as practical solutions to every-day problems. He even has a chapter on toxic plants. A must have for all new parents. Easy to read,funny and extremely informative. I have given this book as a gift at many baby showers.

Who needs Spock?.......1998-06-24

This book is indispensable for any parent. Informal and down-to-earth, it gives you all the information you need (and some you didn't know you needed) in terms funny enough to make you want to read it just for the good lines. I have Spock, but I don't use him half as much as Gersh. I got this book when it came out in paperback about thirty years ago and I've relied on it ever since. It told me more than my mother did and kept me from driving my pediatrician nuts. I think it's great and I ought to know -- I've raised nine children on Gersh and all the married ones call me to ask what Gersh says about their kids' ailments. If I could afford it I'd give a copy to each of my kids as a first-baby gift.

THE SOLOMONS CAMPAIGNS - The Major Turning Point in the Pacific War. The U.S. halted the Japanese advance at Midway and the Coral Sea. But in the Solomons, the U.S. not only stopped them, they began pushing them back!

Part I, The Southern Solomons covers the bloody six-month struggle for Guadalcanal. The relationship between ground fighting, naval warfare and air combat is described in considerable detail as first one side and then the other gains the advantage. Seven major naval engagements are recounted.

Part II, The Central Solomons chronicles the amphibious operations in the New Georgia Islands group including the five separate landings at Rendova, Segi Point, Viru Harbor, Wickham Anchorage, and Rice Anchorage, plus three more significant naval battles and the occupation of Vella Lavella.

Part III, The Northern Solomons recounts the seizure of the Treasuries, the Choiseul Diversion and the Bougainville campaign, plus two more significant naval battles.

Lessons Learned, Finally, the many valuable lessons learned during the Solomons Campaigns are summarized, ranging from logistic support and force requirements to offshore toeholds and leapfrogging. Most became doctrine in later Pacific campaigns.

Informative,but..........2002-11-07

William L Magee's account of these pivotal and complex series of battles in the Solomon Islands during the Pacific War,is both detailed and informative. His research has obviously been indepth and displays accuracy. I was disappointed, however, at the degree of 'redneck' language. Terms like 'Japs', 'Nipponese', 'sent to their ancestors',and others cheapened the quality of the rest of the text. US dead and injured were treated with respect in the book, why not the Japanese? Surely an historical account written in 2001 doesn't have to sound like the script of a John Wayne movie of the 1950's!

"In a League of its Own".......2002-02-07

Author, WWII Navy veteran and military historian William L. McGee has done it again! His Volume I, "The Amphibians Are Coming!" was a fabulous work, but Volume II, "The Solomons Campaigns" is in a league of its own.

Readers get a firsthand account of the way it was done with LCIs, LCTs and LSTs as they hauled the Marines, Army and Air Force and their tools of war in the Pacific Theater.

Navy and coast guardsmen can more fully appreciate the role they played in those flat-bottomed, hard-riding sand and coral scrappers.

This volume covers Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Gavutu, Savo Island, Cape Esperance, Santa Cruz, Tassafaronga, Rennell Island and the Russells from the beginning to the bitter end.

The part most readers will be enlightened by is Chapter 9, "Lessons Learned in the Solomons" by the Army, Navy and Marines. These lessons were beneficial to later Pacific campaigns.

This is a great source book for abbreviations, acronyms, ship and aircraft designations, code words, map symbols and listings of amphibious ship and craft. The book also provides the best possible use of maps and charts to illustrate the action. Most pages include photos of the event written about--some shown for the first time.

I highly recommend "The Solomons Campaigns" by William L. McGee to those who served in the South Pacific or to those who have a special interest in the Pacific Theater of WWII.

Excellent source for both beginning and advanced technicians or engineers. This book is not the newest one on the subject, but I believe it covers individual components/devices better that most. I would recommend this to anyone involved in process control in any industry.

Andrew and Williams also have two other volumes available that cover practical guidelines and engineering data. Good books.
