This is a much needed and appreciated book on clear and consice communication for students writing on their design projects, design statements for themselves about their portfolios, cover letters for employment purposes, not to mention all the aspects of proposals, business communication, applications, brochures, etc. As an educator in the design arts for over 25 years, I am especially happy to have this resource to share with design students and also find much useful information included for myself. Don't buy this book for inspiration..........2004-04-29

I wish I hadn't spent the money on this book. While it does give you the basics of doing mosaics, there's maybe 6 pages of it. If you've ever done any tile work, then its useless. The rest of the book is centered on doing specific projects. Frankly, the example pieces in the book were downright ugly. Most of them looked like they were just a smashed plate re-assembled. There's really no color or design patterns. The rest had doll heads all over them, which I found pretty creepy. If you're a beginner, this might give you the basics but there should be better books out there. If you're looking for inspiration, there HAVE to be better books out there than this one.

This book has a lot of finished pieces that I found to be almost ugly. The techniques as instructed are not as in depth as I have seen in other books. I recommend you purchase to accompany another mosaic book, but I would not make it my primary instructional book.

I love the challenge of creative household projects and bounce back and forth between several different ones, but by far, mosaic tiling is my favorite! I used this book for the ideas & know how. It has great pictures and well thought ideas I had never thought of. I tiled my porch walk way with a wonderful mosaic tile design & I receive complement after complement (even from the mailman!). Everyone wants to know who did it!

Marlene Marshall is a gifted artist and writer. From her book, one can easily learn the beginning steps on the road to making unique pieces of art. Her style is straight forward and holds the reader's hand through the process without telling them how to be creative. The photos are wonderful and give the reader many ideas. Thanks to Marlene's book, I decided to tile a exposed heating duct in my dining room and it came out fantastic! It is often the subject of many dinner conversations with friends. This is truely a great gift for any craft person or budding artist. I can't wait for her next book!

Only One Word to Describe This Book: REAL.......2006-07-08

This book is absolutely the best example of the reality of Salvation, Forgiveness, Redemption, and Deliverance. Anyone who has experienced the saving power of Jesus Christ will recognize the truth in the pictures and testimony of Steven Katzman. The editorials written by the publisher and editors does not do this book justice. In fact, the "official reviews" are quite lame. I will not part with this book! I will keep it and enjoy it over and over again.

Trailblazer In A Skirt.......2004-12-31

Let me make two things clear: "Buying the Night Flight" is a good autobiography, and it is also the account of a woman's amazing career as a trailblazer in the field of journalism.

Geyer was truly a pioneer and a real lady. As a female foreign correspondent, something of a rarity back in the old days, she had to overcome a lot of obstacles. Not only was she not as respected as her male counterparts in her profession, she was also in a line of work that's very physically and mentally demanding for a woman. What's more, as one of the first female foreign correspondents, Geyer really had no one to look up to or to learn from. She had to make up a lot of her own rules as she went along. But as she marches into uncharted territories, whether it's the deep Columbian jungles ruled by the rebels, or a hostage crisis in Egypt, she proves to us time and time again in this book that not only did she succeeded in surviving each assignment with the most fascinating stories and interviews, what's more, she's always done it with class and stylish prose.

What I loved most about this book is Geyer's unrelenting criticism and analyses on herself through each situation. Being pretty much the very first female foreign correspondent, Geyer is acutely aware of her limitations as a woman. But she had also learned that there are many advantages to being a woman, namely that women are more sensitive, and are actually able to get men to open up more. At the same time, Geyer is also honest about the sacrifices that she's had to make in her personal life in order to gain the achievements in her professional life. That's another element that makes this book a good autobiography, because it's such a truthful introspective on the author.

Geyer is also one of those journalist who has a strong moral conviction in what she does, and is not afraid to voice her own subjective opinion on each subject. She's unabashedly American, and carries that naive, moralistic optimism which is very endearing. It makes her book a very revealing read.

A PROFILE OF COURAGE.......2001-08-12

I know Geogie Anne Geyer personally. We met first in Poland in the 1980's when she covered my country after the military coup in 1981. I have red her autobiography several times. I translated it to Polish in jail, when I was a political prisoner of the communists. This woman is a unique example of an investigative journalist. If she had fought in the wars, she would become a war hero. But she covers all the wars and revolutions that broke out during her mature life.What I like about Georgie Anne ("GeeGee") is her sharp mind and toughness. She always gets to the heart of the matter. But (a unique feature) she's also a lovely woman who never looses her charm. I recommend her book to everyone who is conscious of the World we live in. An insightful and fantastic adventure........1998-07-18

Ms. Geyer reveals her life and work as a wonderful adventure. As one of the first women foreign correspondents, she was where the action was. She provides us not only with brilliant insight into the geo-political events of Vietnam, Central America, and the USSR, but makes each of her tours an adventure. Ms. Geyer is truly a gifted writer. You have so much fun reading about her adventures, you may not realize you are learning a lot about foreign politics at the same time. This is a great book.

Excellent book.......2006-08-29

This is a sequel to Walker's "Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland" (1997). It covers what happened to Coleridge after he separated from the Wordsworth's on the third week. You would be advised to read "Recollections" before reading this.

Everything about these books is a true pleasure and obvious labor of love. Not only is Carol Walker a skilled photographer, literary historian and writer, but a hiker and thorough researcher. These books are of real and lasting scholarly merit, but they are also truly enjoyable, and also make excellent coffee table pieces! What more could you want, every book should be like this, it's one of my favorites, comparable to the Norton Annotated series (Huck Finn, Xmas Carol, etc..).

Most of the book is photos but the first 25 pages is a great literary history of Coleridge and Worsdworth, and their relationship and falling out, and how that played into their trip to Scotland. It is entirely human and understandable and gets to the core of the matter of what is friendship.

An Incredibly Beautiful Book.......2005-12-12

The pictures in this book of Scotland's lakes, fields and mountains are breathtaking. Carol Walker follows Coleridge's 263 mile walking tour from over 200 years ago. Mostly color photos record all the sights along the way, and what sights they are. The text consists of a short but thorough history of the tour, and at the end pages from Coleridge's travel journal and letters written during his journey. There are very useful maps that pinpoint each place Coleridge past along the way. Books like this usually disappoint me because of the paucity of pictures. This book is a work of art with equal laurels earned by the author, the photographer and the book designer. It is one of those books you just love to hold and turn the pages. It is so obvious that everyone concerned with this project took great pride in their work. I have a personal library of 10,000 volumes. This is the single most beautiful book I own.

Both comprehensive and detailed, Military Justice in America explores the history of the Court, which finally emerged in the wake of the national debates over the confrontation between civilian commitment to due process and individual rights and the military's demand for discipline. Conspiracy Theory it's not.......2006-11-03

Many people have dismissed "File on the Tsar" as another Conspiracy theory, however it is far from that. File on the Tsar, is an extremelly well researched investiagtion into an alternative theory about the fate of the Romanovs.

Many people dismiss this book because it does not hold that the family was massacred at Ekaterinburg. The fact is that contrary to popular belief the massacre is still a theory, it has not been proven as fact, and the File on the Tsar provides informative generally unknown information on how some of the evidence for a massacre was fabricated.

WARNING SPOILER

Spoiler; For instance when the massacre theory was first being investigated shortly after the Romanovs disapeared, it was claimed that they were shot in the dinning room, not the basement.

Secondly three seperate investigations were conducted, the last investigation is the only one that ever saw light, primarily because it was the most shocking. Early investigators did not find nearly as many bullet holes, bayonet holes, ect . . . as later ones.

SPOILERS END HERE

Even the discovery of bodies does not prove that the alternative theory in File on the Tsar is untrue. The Imperial grave was opened more then once after the family was believed to have been shot and buried, and the remains could have been disturbed.

In short File on the Tsar simply provides comprehensive information, and an alternative theory as to the familys fate, whats more it also could explain the absence of two bodies from the Imperial grve site. The massacre theory does not.

Is it somewhat dated? Yes. Unproven by modern science and DNA? No.

All scientific and fernsic evidence can equally be used to support the File on the Tsar's theory, as it can the massacre.

I recomend if nothing else, that even if you disagree, that you read it.

hmmmm... Very interesting read.......2006-05-10

Anthony Summers and Tom Mangfold did something extrordinary when they discovered Sokolov's original file on the Tsar. They discovered he had withheld evidence to what he found on the Tsar's murder. The book pretty much dispells of the Sokolov investigation and its faults and is way ahead of its time in that sense. But of course the second half of the book has lost most of its validity since the bodies have been located. But it is interesting how many people claimed to have seen the Empress and her daughters alive and being used by Lenin as pawns. It's a perfect story for those in Russia who still believe that the Romanov bones are not authentic. I think they are though. The part of the book which discusses Anna Anderson is very interesting as well, and makes you wonder how this woman could have truly been a Polish factory girl.

Good for the time it was written.......2006-01-02

Many people have criticized this book because it can be labled as a "conspiracy theory." However, it is remarkably well-researched and has some valuble info, such as the fact that Anastasia and Alexey couldn't possibly have been burned to ashes within one night out in the open. The authors can be forgiven, as it is an attempt to explain the fate of the Romanovs before the definitive DNA analysis concluded that at least 9 of the inhabitants of the Ipatiev house were brutally murdered. Also, it was written before Yurovsky's testimony came to light. I don't think it merits Henry Kissinger's "crap" statement about it. It is outdated, but its authors nevertheless command respect from historians. It was right about one thing - that the Sokolov investigation was fixed and Medvedev's testimony is unreliable, as Yurovsky's "confession" demonstrates. If one wants a definitive book about the fate of Nicky and Alix, I suggest Robert K. Massie's "The Romanovs: The Final Chapter."

"Plots have I laid".......2001-11-12

Sadly, with the advent of DNA and the fall of the iron curtain there is less and less mystery in history.

This book is a fine example of the fog and questions which surronunded the death (or disappereance) of the russian imperial family. However, as time has moved along, we now know that most of the ideas the authors suggest never occured.

That said I liked the book and felt that it gave a good treatmeant of the context within which the last Tsar and his family met their tragic end. The reader must always exercise caution about the conclusions even as you enjoy the text.

Interesting as a reflection of it's time.......2000-03-29

File on the Tsar is interesting as a compilation of escape theories popular in the 1970's, most of which have since been proven to be false, particularly in Radzinsky's The Last Tsar (which would be a good book to read after this one). Still, the writing style is engaging and the photos are well chosen. Take it's theories with a grain of salt and it is a fun read.
