Tired and Dated Theories.......2004-05-21

Some 20 years after she won the Hong Kong Peak Competition, Hadid is still churning out the seductive but unresolved jaggedness that characterizes her work. Unlike more mature artists who's work ripens after they have executed and learned from a few built commissions, Hadid remains stuck in the same, now jaded and predictable rut. Not least, she has never developed as a skilled practitioner. Sticking with the diagrammatic approach to design, Hadid's buildings have the look of cheap, temporary structures, lacking depth or quality of detailing. They lack the sophistication of more capable architects (Foster or Rogers, for example), who understand and appreciate assembly and materials. Hadid's "work" is more about computer graphics than any important architectural concerns. It has the flash sensibility of a catchy pop-tune - the sort of music that gets irritating very quickly because it lacks substance. And lacking substance, it's principal appeal is to the unsophisticated viewer.

Disappointing.......2004-05-10

It must be said that Hadid's office staff are capable graphic artists, but it would be very wrong to make the assumption that these slick images lead to architecture. As her Cinicinatti art center shows, Hadid's built work is typically very unsatisfying. She has not grasped scale or contextual issues at all, largely due to her working in an abstract, purely graphic mode. The Vitra Building likewise is no longer used because it fails so badly as a building. If you are interested in real architectural issues, this book is not the place to start.

All Flash, No Substance.......2004-05-06

Hadid was one of those breakthrough architects who achieved early recognition merely for being different. (It is very easy to be different; it is difficult to be good.) Her work has always been insubstantial, little more than crudely assembled buildings that look more like full-size mock-ups than real architecture. Clouding herself in a quasi-intellectual mystique, she has found favor among impressionable youth, but garners little integrity or respect from serious professionals. If you like flash, go ahead, spend your money. But look elsewhere for decent architectural study. Hadid is more about gimmick than anything else

Exceptional!.......2003-12-01

This is a fantastic compilation of Hadid's work. It's more comprehensive than the El Croquis, although there is no long interview. There is adequate text for each project, however.

If you like her work, or are interested in contemporary architecture, I highly recommend it. It's fairly inexpensive and catalogues her exceptional work.

zaha: imagination and magic.......2001-07-25

I think this book has more to it than technical drawings could ever give. It's an artistic sight of what and how architecture should be thought and viewed like. Colours, shapes and forms seem to spring out the pages of this book. Go out there and see it four yourself, it's not a book about construction, it's a book about ideas.

This watercolor book is a favorite of mine. The author describes and shows ways to do watercolor for everyone from the beginner to advanced painter. He gives demos that are interesting, informative and fun to do. I have used this book as reference over and over again and always will.

Natural Watercolour.......2001-04-30

As a returning art student this book is excellent. The author gives clear concise information as to the colors used to achieve the desired effect, as well as, wonderful step by step easy to follow guidelines. I have many books but none that have helped me more with color, composition, glazing and the delight of watercolor.This book is a must book for the beginner as well as the intermediate and advanced painter.

Now we get back into the swing of things. The semifinal round completes, but we get more focus on the fallout of the whole Mask-Yusuke thing, bringing us back to plot development. A welcome return to form. ****

This story is hard to imagine anyone living through. Mr. Ladd's accomplishments are outstanding. This brings a reality to the reader that most people have no idea exists except those living it. This autobiography also shows the power of determination, attitude and self-reliance.

This should be inspiring and educational to young people especially but also to adults who can see the world from a young black man's perspective. Ladd allows us to walk in his shoes for a while; it is a privilege and a lesson.

The narrator for the audiocassette does an excellent job reading the book.

This story reminded me of "Finding Fish" by Antwoine Fisher, another great, inspiring story.

West Dallas's Teacher's review..........2000-12-20

As a 24 yearold 1st yr. teacher in West Dallas I have been looking for answers. I work at the Middle School across from the projects referred to in this book. I am not too far from "Fishtrap", and the gangs (boyz) have changed from Ladd's time but only by the faces of their members. Some of the most infamous being my most delightful students. My kids are not like all of the others in America. They are different...special even and Jerrold Ladd told me why. As I read this book with every page I turned I anticipated that the "story" would get better. I prayed that his mother would change. I longed for the chapter when some long lost Great-Uncle from Georgia would come and take him from the reality of his torrid life. But it never happened. And I became frustarted because my students do not have anyone to rescue them from their realities, not for the long haul at least. Jerrold Ladd's book explained to me the generational frustaration that West Dallas incorporates. The resentment and struggle of blocks and blocks of people is the only thing this community truly owns. Ladd wrote the testament and explanation of a community's fear. His hopes and fears were evident on every page of this book. I only wish that my studenrs could take time from their troubles of hunger, fear, anger, and poverty to big up this reflection of possible positive self. Thank you for this invaluable tool of living and learning.

The 1st yr. West Dallas Teacher's review..........2000-12-19

As a 24 yearold 1st year Teacher in West Dallas I have looked for reasons as to why my students (my kids) as I call them are the way they are. I teach eighth grade History at Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center which is located across the street from the projects referred to by Mr. Ladd. I can testify that all of my 109 students are the soul of Jerrold Ladd.

I have gone home frustrated many nights, crying myself to sleep distraught over what my kids must face at home from day to day after a long day at school. Mr. Ladd brought home the realities of my student lives. He pushed their questionable futures to the forefront of my classroom and by this Christmas I was sad to see them go. I was sad because I questioned how many of them would bathe without the motivation of not being ridiculed by mean classmates. I was sad because I wondered to what length one of my kids would go to pay his mother's rent, the same mother who stood in front of me and her precious son parent-confrence night and stated how he was a waste of 13 years.

As I turned the pages of this book I waited with each page for Mr. Ladd's situation to get better. Similarly, as I come to work everyday I look for my kids situation to get better. In the final ten to twelve pages of this testament to the community of West Dallas I finally saw inspiration and hope, however I shudder to think how long it will take the children of West Dallas to see the same thing.

Jerrold Ladd thank you for this guide into the minds of my babies. It is a invaluable tool.

WINNING IN AMERICA - AGAINST ALL ODDS.......2000-10-02

Excellent writing from a motivated and dedicated young man. Jerrold Ladd experienced disrupted education, a lack of early age positive male influence while proving first hand, that you can over come all obstacles and succeed in America.

It is a gut wrenching look into living in America's projects shortly after desegregation. It reminded me of the fact that life in America is not and has never been the same for everyone. For many, it is a living torture. Once you have read Out Of The Madness, you feel like you personally know the author. The author, Jerrold Ladd, tells an in-depth story about his life, his family (Mother, sister and brother) and some of his friends and associates. He provides an incredible amount of detail for a relatively short book (under 200 pages and large print). He allowed me to walk in his foot steps, feeling his disappointments, success's and failures. Each chapter presented intense quality of life and life treating situations that would test and potentially break the fiber of any man or woman. Jerrold exposes himself, his friends and associates in a bold and remarkable manner that allows you to actually feel his emotions. This book is a dead serious look at life within a segment of America, yesterday and today. The book reminds you that to many people (children and adults), needlessly, experience this and worst everyday. I recommend the book as a must read for everyone. My reason: This book provides an insight into a situation that many generations of Americans helped create. It gives motivation to those in similar situations and those that have not lived integrated into murder, drugs and abuse. Most of all, it proves, in America you can change your life.

Out of Curiousity..........2000-03-23

I am a freshman student at my high school, and was assigned to a book report... I then choose this book, yet not out of wantingness, but just to get something and be done with it. When I started this book, I was so amazed at the details, and way Jerrold lived, with such horrific times in his live from his living style, to growing up, and all the obstacles, and problems that occured in his life. It was so sad, yet you cant put it down.

Another fine effort by Bouchery in the World War II genre. This particular work focuses on the equipment, clothing and personal items borne by British, Canadian and Free French paratroopers for the Normandy Invasion. Period photographs as well as staged images with period gear and clothing give the World War II military buff a great guide. Now I would like to have a similar work for the Market Garden operations that include the Polish paratroopers.

HIGHLY USEFUL AND DETAILED WORK.......2005-11-29

Jwan Bouchery has done it again.
I have his previous works on the British Tommy in NW Europe and his book on the Canadian soldiers. All are elaborately illustrated with charts, individual item photos, and reconstructions of as worn combinations of equipment and clothing worn by models. In addition there are many lists, charts, and tables gathering together informatioon gleaned from many scarce and obscure publications.
Myxh of Bouchery's work has appeared in the excellent French language periodical Militaria published also by Histoire et Collections. This method of proceeding has the great virtue of first publishing in a more temporary format and inviting the readers to submit corrections and additional data which can be used to improve the final work published in book form.

During the 1930s and 1940s the British cultivated close political and social relations with members of the Tibetan elite and established a Mission in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa. Based on the Pitt Rivers Museum exhibition of the same name, Seeing Lhasa reveals the way in which the city of Lhasa, its palaces, monasteries and mansions, became the backdrop for a social world in which the British and Tibetans interacted. They ate and drank, watched films and played football together and these activities were photographed, painted and filmed as part of the British diplomatic agenda.

This book demonstrates the aesthetic accomplishments of British visitors to Tibet and documents aspects of Tibetan life no longer visible in the city vacated by the Dalai Lama in 1959. It features photographic portraits of many notable Tibetan figures, including members of the Tibetan religious and governmental hierarchies, alongside a unique set of watercolours by the Indian artist Kanwal Krishna, who accompanied the British party to witness the Installation of the 14th Dalai Lama in Lhasa in 1940. This is the first in-depth study of the way in which such images construct a sense of place and determine how future generations may see Lhasa.

The subject of this research monograph is semilinear Dirichlet problems and similar equations involving the p-Laplacian. Solutions are constructed by a constraint variational method. The major new contribution is a detailed analysis of low-energy solutions. In PDE terms the low-energy limit corresponds to the well-known vanishing viscosity limit.First it is shown that in the low-energy limit the Dirichlet energy concentrates at a single point in the domain. This behaviour is typical of a large class of nonlinearities known as zero mass case. Moreover, the concentration point can be identified in geometrical terms. This fact is essential for flux minimization problems. Finally, the asymptotic behaviour of low-energy solutions in the vicinity of the concentration point is analyzed on a microscopic scale.The sound analysis of the zero mass case is novel and complementary to the majority of research articles dealing with the positive mass case. It illustrates the power of a purely variational approach where PDE methods run into technical difficulties. To the readersâ€~ benefit, the presentation is self-contained and new techniques are explained in detail.Bernoulliâ€~s free-boundary problem and the plasma problem are the principal applications to which the theory is applied. The author derives several numerical methods approximating the concentration point and the free boundary. These methods have been implemented and tested by a co-worker. The corresponding plots are highlights of this book.
