Founded in London in 1984 by Mark Holt, Simon Johnston, and Hamish Muir, 8vo was one of the most influential design studios in the 1980s and continues to be significant in the design world today. The design studio used traditional, craft-based working methods but an experimental approach to design in order to anticipate the computer-aided aesthetic of the 90s. The magazine Octavo, published in eight issues from 1986 to 1992 has long held cult status and is thoroughly documented here, along with the background against which it emerged. 8vo's work pushed back the boundaries of commercial design, and was a key factor in preparing the way for many contemporary designers.

Designed and written by two of the studio's partners, this attractive, chunky-format book will be a delight to students and practioners of architecture, design, and art alike.

A great read that focuses on process rather than product........2006-01-19

This is a really interesting book that breaks the common mould of graphic design career reviews. The usual "slide show" of finished posters/books/etc is shunned in favour of a deeper look at the thought process & physical development behind selected work.

The book is by Mark Holt & Hamish Muir -the principals in 8vo from around the time of its inception in the early 80s until its eventual closure in 2000. In this time they most notably worked for Factory Records, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, "Flux" music festival & Holt Hinshaw Pfau on very open, unconstrained briefs to design posters & other printed material. On these "creative" (as some would have it) briefs, they applied their own interpretation of rational "international style" - resulting in some of the best graphics of the era. However, the more interesting aspects of this book are their application of grid systems & rational design process to more everyday items - such as phone & water bills.

The book openly shares their exploration of intellectual & physical process behind a form of graphic design that shied away from using images, and through that mechanism, the reader is introduced not only to how they produced graphics - but what "design" meant to them. When everything in the late 1980s was "designer", 8vo described themselves as "visual engineers" rather than "designers". With this exploration, the reader should come away with an appreciation of the process behind credit card bills as much as an appreciation of the aesthetics of a good type-based poster.

The book is dimensionally small, but does come in at over 500 pages. It is very well designed & features 5 essays from esteemed designers. If you are looking for a glossy career retrospective - this isn't your book. If you are looking for a fantastic insight into the process behind great design, then it is!

This book was very useful. It give good detail on how to do engraving. My favorite part though was the fact that it covers in detail, care and sharpening of the tools used

The most important analysis of '30s American culture.......1998-11-05

Even after more than 20 years, Stott's book remains the seminal and perhaps most provocative study of the cultural expressions of '30s America. Depression-era America created a crisis of authenticity and relevance for artists, intellectuals and those in the communications industries. The result, says Stott, was a new form of public art, focused on everyday people and based in fact. Readable and persuasive, Stott's book is as fresh and memorable today as it was when it first came out in the mid-'70s. For anyone interested in the '30s, in the Depression era, or in documentary photography, this is a must-read.

Wonderful.......1999-10-25

This was my favorite comic strip, and I was greatly upset when it stopped running. I hadn't known this book was available until a while after it was published, and it was great to discover it. It's so nice to see a collection of Lynde's own favorite Sunday "Rick O'Shay" strips. My only complaint is I wish he had included more of them!

As part of the legendary "Literary Conversations Series" this one falls a few notches below the standard set by the volumes on Steinbeck, Anais Nin, abd Ishmael Reed, to say nothing of the magnificent Gore Vidal book that Mississippi brought out a year or so. Now there's a man who knows how to give a good interview. Not that this is the fault of the editor, Jack Bales, who seems to care sincerely about Willie Morris and to have dug up some genuinely rare, if uninvolving, items from the trunk. Most of the interviews appeared in pretty osbcure places; however if you're actually FROM Mississippi the venues may be far better known, household words in fact.

I wound up liking Willie Morris more than after I read the recent biography by his friend, Larry King, not the talk show host. That biography was written to bury Willie, not to praise him. These interviews give you Willie in a more reflective form and occasionally let you glimpse the magic of what it must have been like to know the impish Southern sprite. If Ariel or Puck had been born in Yazoo City Mississippi, he might gave grown up sounding Shakespearean, like Willie Morris. "Writing is memory," he says, "the burden of memory. It's a big burden. You exorcise the demons." I had never heard it phrased exactly like that.

Some of the interviewers are a little frosty towards Willie, although around the middle of the book they start kissing his ass in a big way. Wayne Pond, in one of the never before published interviews, will be roundly embarrassed to find some of his infusions repeated verbatim: "I don't mind telling you that your new book brought tears to me eyes, and I thought to myself, 'My goodness, you all are evoking this incredible sense of innocence and wonder.'" (139) Studs Terkel, ordinarily a great interviewer, seems bored here. Did you know that Elizabeth Hardwick's review of NEW YORK DAYS (1993) was the longest review ever published in the NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW? You'll find this, and a thousand other facts, in this volume, which is the largest and best compendium of Willie Morris trivia I know of.

Rather fragmented account of overseas chinese, reads like a cut and paste work of a collection of anecdotes, poems, excerpts of articles. However the collection of photos and bite-sized snippets form an interesting collage of the human struggle, motivation and life of the chinese diaspora.
