    Book Description

The venerable cities of the past, such as Venice or Amsterdam, convey a feeling of wholeness, an organic unity that surfaces in every detail, large and small, in restaurants, shops, public gardens, even in balconies and ornaments. But this sense of wholeness is lacking in modern urban design, with architects absorbed in problems of individual structures, and city planners preoccupied with local ordinances, it is almost impossible to achieve. In this groundbreaking volume, the newest in a highly-acclaimed series by the Center for Environmental Structure, architect and planner Christopher Alexander presents a new theory of urban design which attempts to recapture the process by which cities develop organically. To discover the kinds of laws needed to create a growing whole in a city, Alexander proposes here a preliminary set of seven rules which embody the process at a practical level and which are consistent with the day-to-day demands of urban development. He then puts these rules to the test, setting out with a number of his graduate students to simulate the urban redesign of a high-density part of San Francisco, initiating a project that encompassed some ninety different design problems, including warehouses, hotels, fishing piers, a music hall, and a public square. This extensive experiment is documented project by project, with detailed discussion of how each project satisfied the seven rules, accompanied by floorplans, elevations, street grids, axonometric diagrams and photographs of the scaled-down model which clearly illustrate the discussion. A New Theory of Urban Design provides an entirely new theoretical framework for the discussion of urban problems, one that goes far to remedy the defects which cities have today.

      Book Description

The author builds a historical bridge between architectural science and theory/design. He seeks to address neglected aspects of the Modern Movement as a prelude to supporting a diversity of architectural insight and experimentation aimed at twenty-first century environmental needs and priorities. The attitudes and influences of renowned figures are re-examined in relation to current issues of architectural sustainability. This book will provide students with a text for studies related to energy or environments as well as providing a wider picture for students and practitioners engaged with the built environment.

        Book Description

Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys (b. 1920) developed his visionary architectural project New Babylon between 1956 and 1974. Emerging out of the remarkable activist group the Situationist International, the project was concerned with issues of "unitary urbanism" and the future of art in a technocratic society. It has had a major impact on subsequent generations of artists, architects, and urbanists. Exploring the intersection of drawing, utopianism, and activism in a multimedia era, The Activist Drawing not only traces this historical moment but reveals surprisingly contemporary issues about the relationship between a fully automated environment and human creativity.

Several decades before the current debate about architecture in the supposedly placeless electronic age, Constant conceived an urban and architectural model that literally envisaged the World Wide Web. The inhabitants of his New Babylon drift through huge labyrinthine interiors, perpetually reconstructing every aspect of the environment according to their latest desires. Walls, floors, lighting, sound, color, texture, and smell keep changing. This network of vast "sectors" can be seen as a physical embodiment of the Internet, where people configure their individual Web sites and wander from site to site without limits. With its parallels to our virtual world, New Babylon seems as radical today as when it was created.

The essays explore the relevance of Constant's utopian work to that of his peers in the Situationist International and experimental architectural movements of the 1960s, as well as later generations of architects and artists. They use Constant's revolutionary project as a springboard to reconsider the role of drawing in an electronic age.

              Book Description

A professional artist uses his own and others' work to teach painters how to master the all-important aspect of light-how the eye perceives it and how to duplicate its effects. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of images in six of the most popular media, from oil paint to egg tempera, this essential course demonstrates how to capture the glare of sun on water, the play of shadow on the human form, the soft glow of twilight, and the translucency of flowers. There's a thorough, easy-to-follow explanation of the key concept of "tonal control," and hands-on instruction that comes complete with specialized diagrams (including color wheels, tonal scales, and color temperature charts), technical tips, and inspiring creative ideas.

4 out of 5 stars What did he want? He wanted to create something unique!.......2000-09-29

33 snapshots of stars from all over the world. Looks almost like paparazzi photos. After Star Trak this book couldn`t be anything else than a dissapointment for me but after studying the pictures more I have found qualities I have never seen in any picture ever before. And the more you look at them the more you get hypnotised by the atmosphere Anton creates in his pictures. He has done the job in 33 still lives too but it seems more like an experiment. If not anything else the pictures are unique. You have never seen anything else before. The photographs of Bjork, Kylie Minogue, Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGrgor are the pictures that inspires me mostly in my own work at this moment. The photographs are toned in baby blue and purple and this creates a spooky, almost claustofobic atmosphere. These pictures are not beautiful. They will maybe not be remembered as great photography, but they are UNIQUE. The thing really is that I have never seen anything like this ever before and as a photographer that is really hard in this world where everything looks like everything else.

With humor and much-needed affirmation, she sheds light on emotional and physical reasons for messiness and shows why most organizational systems don't work for Messies. She then shows readers how to break free from messy behavior by changing their mind-set and arresting the stress that plagues them. Originally published in 1989 and with more than 90,000 copies sold, Messie No More is now thoroughly revised and updated with the latest information on attention deficit disorder and two new chapters dealing with fatigue and depression and their relevance to messiness. Each of the twenty chapters in the book ends with a question-and-answer section called ''Assess the Mess,'' which helps readers take practical steps in applying the book's principles. Messie No More contains the basis for a permanent change in readers who long for an orderly home but aren't sure how to have one. It is a practical guide that is sure to be snatched up by frustrated Messies everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars From Disorganized to Organized.......2007-02-26

This book puts in plain English the challenges of getting organized and staying that way. Sandra explains from her own experiences the challenges of life's curve balls. I recommend this book to anyone that struggles with the constant nemesis of getting organized.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reading & Help in organizing.......2006-09-01

I found this book very insightful in why I tend to lead a disorganized life. It has helpful suggestions for becoming more organized. Sandra's books do not condem you for being messy, they help you understand why you tend to be messy & help you take baby steps towards a more organized life.

                              5 out of 5 stars Deeper than a Quick-Fix!!.......2005-11-30

If you are looking for an instruction manual on how to clean up your house/car/office/life, then this is NOT the book....this book goes soooo much deeper than that and explores the root causes of why some people are messy and disorganized and some people are not. I orginally bought this book because I WAS looking for that quick fix - a "do this, do that and poof! your house will be clean!" kind of thing, but even though that is NOT the service it provides, I found the book to be incredibly informative and thought-provoking. I had never considered some of the things that Sandra Felton suggests. Basically, she asks the reader to explore the "disease" instead of the "symptoms"...because as we all know, it's much better to heal when the disease itself is fixed. I had no idea how much psychology was behind the big giant messy pit in my house. And you know what? After reading this book, I was did exactly what one of the earlier reviewers said to do: rented a giant dumpster (and I do mean GIANT). Could I have done so before reading the book? I doubt it...because I wasn't PSYCHOLOGICALLY ready to do so yet. SO - five stars from this MESSIE (working on staying reformed!)

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me!.......2005-10-16

I agree with Siouxsan k. This book is not for everyone, but it was great for me. My house isn't all that messy, but I wanted it to sparkle, and I wanted to know what mental blocks were holding me back in this area. I'm writing a review to share my experience as someone who doesn't have a serious problem. I was amazed to find my mixed up thinking on nearly every page! This book, coupled with the FlyLady website, (which I discovered through another Amazon review) have made a big difference in my life. Sandra Felton, thank you very much!!

                              2 out of 5 stars Frustratingly Scatterbrained.......2004-05-19

Professional organizer Sandra Felton is a former messy person - and after reading Messie No More, I do believe it. This book suffers from lack of organization and cohesiveness. Most chapters jump all over the place and what sparse substance they hold is buried under a clutter of random quotations, examples, non sequiturs, and parables that go nowhere.

Felton offers many standard insights into the psychological motivations of the disorganized person, along with some general common-sense tips on getting a grip on household chaos. While the author is sympathetic and supportive toward the messy person (sorry, Felton's purposefully misspelled term "Messie" grates horribly on me), I would wager that most intelligent readers could not help but feel insulted and/or irritated by her unintentionally patronizing characterizations of the organizationally challenged. Like the "Messies" she describes, Felton comes off as nice and well-meaning, but dotty and scattered. She is occasionally on target and in the later chapters actually gets around to some practical suggestions, but these glimmers of potential only make the whole book ultimately more frustrating.

Aside from its structural flaws, the book seems a bit old-fashioned and is off-putting on a couple of other counts - it is pretty much exclusively geared toward women who take the role of "housekeeper," maintains a very conventional view of housework and familial roles, and is filled with many references to Christianity and the Bible.

I'm sure there are books out there that can be of real help to people like me who need strategies for getting organized, but this is not one of them.

This is the first review I have ever written at Amazon and I must say I am surprised at some of the negative reviews by other users. I came to this site looking to by another book by this author because I found this book to be so helpful. I can't even begin to describe how this book has helped me in my life. I agree with the person that says this book is for someone who is not a 'cleanie' but instead needs to desperately understand the underlying reasons and thinking that a messie must contend with. I was at a level 1 and now I am probably at a level 3 (out of 10, with 10 being obsessively neat and zero being a hopeless hoarder) because of this book. It might not sound like a big jump but the difference it has made for my life is tremendous. I am shooting for a level 6 someday and would be thrilled with that. This book is getting me there. I am highly functional in most aspects of my life, but I just can't get organized! It is my biggest obstacle and I thank the author for her books. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has felt the helplessness of living messie.

5 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, But What I Needed.......2002-04-07

If you're looking for a "how to" guide, this is not the book. Instead of handing out helpful hints, Ms. Felton gets to the root of the problem of being a Messie. My line has always been "I have every book on organization, I just don't know where they are!" Throughout the book, I felt that Ms. Felton lived my life with me. I learned a lot about myself. Most importantly, I learned that I am not disorganized, but that I am a Messie who needs to change my way of thinking in order to overcome my messiness. This book is amazing and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars "It Was Clean Last Week! . . . You Should Have Come Then.".......2001-10-02

This is not the book you want to pick up if you're looking for 101 helpful hints to housekeeping. This is the book you read when none of those hints, tips, and everyday wisdom books have helped. When those same tips work for others but not for you. When you can envision an organized home in your head, but just can't seem to make it happen. When you can clean the homes of others, but yours lies a shambles. When the closet you organized last week is now worse than ever. When threats come from family members to leave you or depression sets in because of your lack of ability to keep things tidy. (by the way, critics, those practical housekeeping tips are in chapter 16)

1 out of 5 stars Long on opinions; short on practical advice.......1999-07-14

This book was a disappointment. I expected to learn more about organization and motivation as in Felton's other books (which have been helpful). Instead, this book is jammed with lots of religion, unfounded claims about ADD, and other nonsense.

                              4 out of 5 stars I am a messie? Yes you are!.......1998-05-12

Thinking I would get help on how to organize my household and get a handle on all the clutter, I picked this up. What I received from this book was quite different! I never realized that I fit into the "messie" category and couldn't understand how an otherwise organized, neat person could possibly allow all this stuff to clutter up. Sandra Felton helps to identify what a messie is and how to overcome that lifestyle as well as giving some brief steps on how to begin to organize and overcome the clutter. I liked this book so much I intend to purchase as many of her other titles as I can locate!

                                Book Description

African-American soldiers played a decisive role in the US Army on the western frontier during the Plains Wars. First authorised by Congress in July 1866, they were organised into two cavalry and four infantry regiments, which were commanded by white officers. All were quickly nicknamed the 'Buffalo Soldiers' by their Cheyenne and Comanche enemies. These brave soldiers fought many native tribes over the years, including the warriors of Sitting Bull and Geronimo. This book tells the story of these buffalo soldiers who, until the early 1890s, constituted 20 per cent of all active forces on duty in the American West.

This wide-ranging collection brings together multiple perspectives on a key period in Irish history, from the Fenian Rising on 1867 to the creation of the Irish Free State, with a focus on the formation of Irish identity. The chapters, written by a wide range of experts, focus on key individuals or ideological groups and consider how they perceived Ireland's future, what their sense of Irish identity was, and who they saw as the enemy. Providing a new angle on Irish history during the period of 1867 to 1921, this book will appeal to those with an interest in Irish history.

                                    Book Description

A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research, since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates, and which are frequently referred to. Thus it has set a standard for morphological research.

In the Yearbook of Morphology 2003 a large number of articles is devoted to the phenomenon of complex predicates consisting of a verb preceded by a preverb. Such complex predicates exhibit both morphological and syntactic behaviour, and thus form a testing ground for theories of the relation between morphology and syntax. Evidence is presented from a wide variety of languages including Germanic, Romance, Australian, and Uralic languages. A number of articles present historical evidence on the change of preverbal elements into prefixes. Topics such as grammaticalization, constructional idioms, and derivational periphrasis are also discussed.

In addition, this Yearbook of Morphology contains articles on morphological parsing, and on the role of paradigmatical relations in analogical change.
