Book Description
The venerable cities of the past, such as Venice or Amsterdam, convey a feeling of wholeness, an organic unity that surfaces in every detail, large and small, in restaurants, shops, public gardens, even in balconies and ornaments. But this sense of wholeness is lacking in modern urban design, with architects absorbed in problems of individual structures, and city planners preoccupied with local ordinances, it is almost impossible to achieve. In this groundbreaking volume, the newest in a highly-acclaimed series by the Center for Environmental Structure, architect and planner Christopher Alexander presents a new theory of urban design which attempts to recapture the process by which cities develop organically. To discover the kinds of laws needed to create a growing whole in a city, Alexander proposes here a preliminary set of seven rules which embody the process at a practical level and which are consistent with the day-to-day demands of urban development. He then puts these rules to the test, setting out with a number of his graduate students to simulate the urban redesign of a high-density part of San Francisco, initiating a project that encompassed some ninety different design problems, including warehouses, hotels, fishing piers, a music hall, and a public square. This extensive experiment is documented project by project, with detailed discussion of how each project satisfied the seven rules, accompanied by floorplans, elevations, street grids, axonometric diagrams and photographs of the scaled-down model which clearly illustrate the discussion. A New Theory of Urban Design provides an entirely new theoretical framework for the discussion of urban problems, one that goes far to remedy the defects which cities have today.

The Activist Drawing: Retracing Situationist Architectures from Constant's New Babylon to Beyond
Catherine de Zegher Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 026204191X |
Book Description
Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys (b. 1920) developed his visionary architectural project New Babylon between 1956 and 1974. Emerging out of the remarkable activist group the Situationist International, the project was concerned with issues of "unitary urbanism" and the future of art in a technocratic society. It has had a major impact on subsequent generations of artists, architects, and urbanists. Exploring the intersection of drawing, utopianism, and activism in a multimedia era, The Activist Drawing not only traces this historical moment but reveals surprisingly contemporary issues about the relationship between a fully automated environment and human creativity.

Book Description
Sandra Felton's foolproof strategies can help even the most frazzled reader become Messie No More. With humor and much-needed affirmation, she sheds light on emotional and physical reasons for messiness and shows why most organizational systems don't work for Messies. She then shows readers how to break free from messy behavior by changing their mind-set and arresting the stress that plagues them. Originally published in 1989 and with more than 90,000 copies sold, Messie No More is now thoroughly revised and updated with the latest information on attention deficit disorder and two new chapters dealing with fatigue and depression and their relevance to messiness. Each of the twenty chapters in the book ends with a question-and-answer section called ''Assess the Mess,'' which helps readers take practical steps in applying the book's principles. Messie No More contains the basis for a permanent change in readers who long for an orderly home but aren't sure how to have one. It is a practical guide that is sure to be snatched up by frustrated Messies everywhere.Customer Reviews:

Felton offers many standard insights into the psychological motivations of the disorganized person, along with some general common-sense tips on getting a grip on household chaos. While the author is sympathetic and supportive toward the messy person (sorry, Felton's purposefully misspelled term "Messie" grates horribly on me), I would wager that most intelligent readers could not help but feel insulted and/or irritated by her unintentionally patronizing characterizations of the organizationally challenged. Like the "Messies" she describes, Felton comes off as nice and well-meaning, but dotty and scattered. She is occasionally on target and in the later chapters actually gets around to some practical suggestions, but these glimmers of potential only make the whole book ultimately more frustrating.
Aside from its structural flaws, the book seems a bit old-fashioned and is off-putting on a couple of other counts - it is pretty much exclusively geared toward women who take the role of "housekeeper," maintains a very conventional view of housework and familial roles, and is filled with many references to Christianity and the Bible.
I'm sure there are books out there that can be of real help to people like me who need strategies for getting organized, but this is not one of them.

Buffalo Soldiers 1866-91 (Elite)
Ron Field Manufacturer: Osprey Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1841767565 Release Date: 2004-06-24 |
Book Description
African-American soldiers played a decisive role in the US Army on the western frontier during the Plains Wars. First authorised by Congress in July 1866, they were organised into two cavalry and four infantry regiments, which were commanded by white officers. All were quickly nicknamed the 'Buffalo Soldiers' by their Cheyenne and Comanche enemies. These brave soldiers fought many native tribes over the years, including the warriors of Sitting Bull and Geronimo. This book tells the story of these buffalo soldiers who, until the early 1890s, constituted 20 per cent of all active forces on duty in the American West.

Yearbook of Morphology 2003 (Yearbook of Morphology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402012721 |
Book Description
A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research, since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates, and which are frequently referred to. Thus it has set a standard for morphological research.
In the Yearbook of Morphology 2003 a large number of articles is devoted to the phenomenon of complex predicates consisting of a verb preceded by a preverb. Such complex predicates exhibit both morphological and syntactic behaviour, and thus form a testing ground for theories of the relation between morphology and syntax. Evidence is presented from a wide variety of languages including Germanic, Romance, Australian, and Uralic languages. A number of articles present historical evidence on the change of preverbal elements into prefixes. Topics such as grammaticalization, constructional idioms, and derivational periphrasis are also discussed.
In addition, this Yearbook of Morphology contains articles on morphological parsing, and on the role of paradigmatical relations in analogical change.
