Book Description

This is the story of one man's quest to breathe life back into some of America's most historically significant dwellings. Richard Jenrette's affinity for endangered historic sites has led to the restoration of such historic houses as Edgewater on the Hudson River; Millford Plantation and the Roper House, both in South Carolina; Ayr Mount in North Carolina; and Cane Garden in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This uniquely personal account of the quest, acquisition, restoration, and furnishing of each property is instructive and entertaining. Along the way, the author introduces the artisans, curators, furniture specialists, designers, antiquarians, preservationists, and collectors who have played a part in his adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures with Old Houses.......2007-07-19

I have been a fan of Richard Jenrette ever since I first saw the Roper House in Charleston. This year I had the opportunity to visit it and see all of the public spaces and admire the many changes since my first visit. Next spring I will be with a small group invited for coffee and a tour of Edgewater. I suspect that this may be the only other one of his houses that I get to see, but I feel as though I have been to all of them after reading his book. It is lively, amusing and quite informative, and the photographs are wonderful. Thanks Richard Jenrette for preserving these wonderful properties!

5 out of 5 stars Appreciate Classic American Interiors? This book may be your new friend........2006-06-14

I bought this book for my wife who is interested in classical American design and is a student of heritage preservation. The book is generously illustrated with large colour photographs of the exteriors and interiors of Mr. Jenrette's restored historic houses. The interior designs are neither museum-like nor a snobbish show of wealth, but impeccably tasteful, eminently liveable and absolutely applicable.

The text not only explains the history of the houses, their restoration and their decoration; it conveys the love and respect with which Mr. Jenrette undertook each project. This is among my wife's favourite books, and it never stays long on the bookshelf. (As a result of reading this book, my wife has put Mr. Jenrette at the top of her "person I most want to meet" list). Highlighting American furniture styles of the early 19th century in situ at six of America's most beautiful homes, there is a strong East coast and Southern flavour reminiscent of some of the rooms at the White House.

In these days of reduced heritage funding, many irreplaceable examples of fine American architecture are being lost. Mr. Jenrette has used his personal wealth to preserve endangered American architecture and antiques for future public enjoyment. Many thanks to him for sharing them in this excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book Of One Man's Exceptional Residences.......2003-01-13

If you believe in reincarnation and love old houses, you would surely want to "come back" as Richard Hampton Jenrette! (Who knows, maybe HE is the reinarnation of Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt Belmont, a peer, certainly, in the collection of wonderful houses.)

This man has the most exquisite taste, a passion for historic houses and the decorative arts, and the means to indulge a lifestyle that can simply be described as sublime.

This book is NOT a "how to" manual. It is an elegant recollection of a number of houses he has owned and obviously loved over the course of many years.

            Book Description

The painters of the Royal Watercolour Society—among the finest in the world—present an inspirational showcase of their most innovative ideas. Using a highlighted sample, each artist details a technique that he or she finds particularly effective, and covers the entire process from concept to initial composition. Their enlightening discussions cover such subjects as training the eye, creating special effects, and working with unusual mixtures of paint. By revealing the thinking behind their compositional choices and offering expert tips on materials and techniques, these distinguished painters provide a unique introduction to their art and an intimate look at the creative process. In addition, a brief history of watercolor focuses on such illustrious past Society members as Cotman, Palmer, and Sargent.

Here he has allowed some other talented comics creators a shot at telling short stories involving big red H. B. Book Description

"Lone Scout: W. D. Boyce and American Boy Scouting" is the biography of a Progressive-era Chicago businessman and world-wide explorer. Paralleling Theodore Roosevelt in many activities, during his lifetime Boyce (1858-1929) attained international prominence--"a man with friends in almost every civilized country." His sustaining legacy, also a reflection of Roosevelt's interest in and concern for children, was bringing the concept of Boy Scouting to the United States and combining it with youth programs established by the YMCA and other organizations. This is the first authoritative biography of William D. Boyce, founder in 1910 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Born to a Pennsylvania farm family, Boyce's monetary successes were as a Chicago newspaper publisher. Between 1887 and the early 1930s, his periodicals were read by millions of subscribers in rural and small-town America.

A lifelong adventurer, Boyce made extensive trips to all parts of the world. During World War One, he traveled to Europe on the British luxury liner Lusitania (three months before it was torpedoed by a German submarine). He made two African safaris and spent nearly a year traversing South America. Sending detailed reports of those foreign experiences as articles for his newspapers, the stories were later reprinted in books published by Rand McNally & Company.

Among the last hugely successful turn-of-the-century entrepreneurs, Boyce amassed a fortune valued in 1916 at $20 million (approximately $328 million in 2003 value). Perhaps because his death in 1929 occurred on the brink of the Great Depression--a time of vast economic and political change, W. D. Boyce has been virtually forgotten in American history. Yet his accomplishments were many, and his lasting gift is the Scouting program he initiated in 1910 and helped finance through the early years, a program that today serves more than four million American boys.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Time Spent Reading It.......2004-05-23

Unlike the "reviewer" from Houston, I liked the book.

William Boyce was a man of whom little is truly known. There is no Boyce Library and Archive and there is not any overflowing amount of information about him in the BSA National Archives. He was an important fringe character whose story should be known.

Due to this lack of information, LONE SCOUT is the first book that goes into the persona of the man, the man who is generally credited with bringing the idea of Boy Scouting to the USA in terms of the present organization known as the BSA. In my research of the beginnings of the worldwide Movement of Boy Scouting, LONE SCOUT has been a rather good resource on this topic that enabled me to delve further into the story of Boyce with regard to his role in the BSA. And since this is the first substantive biography on him, it should be the one upon which all future ones should be compared.

At this point in time, Ms. Petterchak's book is the most definitive look into Mr. Boyce's life, and to my literary knowledge, font size has never been a critical determinant in discerning the quality of content. A panning argument of "large font size" is cursory and of little importance.

Give this book a read, it's highly worth one's time.

                      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2004-04-30

I've purchased many books (new and used) dealing with Scouting, and this is the first one that I had an almost physical reaction when I opened it. For the rather expensive price ($21.95) for a paperback, I was expecting a book on the par of Kett's "Rites of Passge" or MacLeod's "Building Character." Needless to say, the small paper size, the large font size, the paltry number of endnotes, and the limited bibliography was a disappointment.

To be perfectly honest, it looks more like a college paper than a published professional biography. This sense was confirmed when I noticed that the author was citing an undergraduate unpublished paper as a source! And a source for a US Congressional Report that any good researcher can obtain with no problem.

Unfortunately, a serious biography of Boyce has yet to be written and published. If you'e wanting to read such a work, you'll have to wait. If you really want to read this book, then wait a year and you'll be able to buy it when it is marked down to it's real value in the used book stores.

                      5 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Informative Biography.......2004-02-28

For readers interested in Boy Scout history, and especially about the organizaton's founder, this is a valuable biography. No previous book on the Scouts has offered more than a few sentences about Boyce. The "Lone Scout" research, index, and narrative style are all excellent. I especially enjoyed the chapter on his African safari, the "Balloonograph Expedition." What an adventure!

                          Book Description

World War II was a watershed event for many of America's minorities, but its impact on Chinese Americans has been largely ignored. Utilizing extensive archival research as well as oral histories and letters from over one hundred informants, K. Scott Wong explores how Chinese Americans carved a newly respected and secure place for themselves in American society during the war years.

Long the victims of racial prejudice and discriminatory immigration practices, Chinese Americans struggled to transform their image in the nation's eyes. As Americans racialized the Japanese enemy abroad and interned Japanese Americans at home, Chinese citizens sought to distinguish themselves by venturing beyond the confines of Chinatown to join the military and various defense industries in record numbers. Wong offers the first in-depth account of Chinese Americans in the American military, tracing the history of the 14th Air Service Group, a segregated unit comprising over 1,200 men, and examining how their war service contributed to their social mobility and the shaping of their ethnic identity.

Americans First pays tribute to a generation of young men and women who, torn between loyalties to their parents' traditions and their growing identification with America and tormented by the pervasive racism of wartime America, served their country with patriotism and courage. Consciously developing their image as a "model minority," often at the expense of the Japanese and Japanese Americans, Chinese Americans created the pervasive image of Asian Americans that still resonates today.

                            Book Description

This book is a highly original study of transnationalism among immigrants from Taishan, a populous coastal county in south China from which, until 1965, the majority of Chinese in the United States originated. Drawing creatively on Chinese-language sources such as gazetteers, newspapers, and magazines, supplemented by fieldwork and interviews as well as recent scholarship in Chinese social history, the author presents a much richer depiction than we have had heretofore of the continuing ties between Taishanese remaining in China and their kinsmen seeking their fortune in “Gold Mountain.”

Long after the gold in California ran out and prejudice confined them to dismal Chinatowns, generations of Chinese—mostly men from rural areas of southern China—continued to migrate to the United States in hopes of bettering the family’s lot by remitting much of the meager sums they earned as laundrymen, cooks, domestic workers, and Chinatown merchants.

Economic hardships and U.S. Exclusion laws extended the immigrants’ separation from their families for decades, “sojourns” that in many cases ended only in death. Men lived as bachelors and their wives as widows, parents passed away, and children grew up without ever seeing their fathers’ faces. Families and village communities had to adapt to survive the stress of long-term, long-distance separation from their primary wage-earners.

At the same time, men raised in the rural communities of a faltering imperial China had to negotiate encounters with an industrializing, Western-dominated, often hostile world. This history explores the resiliency and flexibility of rural Chinese, qualities that enabled them to preserve their families by living apart from them and to survive the intertwining of their rural world with global systems of race, labor, and capital. The author demonstrates that through migration to dank and narrow enclaves, they came to live, and even to flourish, in a transnational community that persisted despite decades of separation and an ocean’s width of distance.

                                Book Description

This study shows that arms control agreements reflect rather than affect relations between the parties. The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) codified parity between NATO and the Soviet-led Warsaw Treaty Organization (WTO) in November 1990. CFE thus reflected the status quo at the end of the cold war, but the benefits were short lived, at least for Russia. Although still widely viewed in the west as the cornerstone of security and stability in post-Cold War Europe, from the Russian perspective CFE was soon overtaken by events. With the collapse of the WTO and the Soviet Union in 1991, it became impossible to talk of a military balance between east and west in Europe, especially as all the former WTO states opted for membership in NATO.

The other state parties worked hard to adjust and adapt the treaty to meet Russian concerns about its new weakness relative to NATO, but three sets of issues complicated Russian acceptance of CFE limits. The first was NATO enlargement which, though not directed against Moscow, certainly underscored Russia's weakness relative to NATO. The second was Russia's heavy handed suppression of the Chechen independence movement, begun by Boris Yeltsin in 1994, which after September 11, 2001 President Putin rationalized as part of the global war on terrorism. Putin also used 9/11 as an excuse not to withdraw troops and equipment from Georgia a commitment made by Russia when the adapted CFE Treaty was signed in Istanbul in November 1999. The third was Russian opposition to increasingly aggressive US-led military operations in the post Cold War era: in the Balkans in the 1990s and against Iraq in 2003. Russia cooperated with the operation against the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2002, but was increasingly concerned with what appeared to be permanent US military bases in central Asia.
