Book Description

The preeminent master of unabashed wealth and opulence, Paris based Alberto Pinto is one of the world's most acclaimed interior designers. Alberto Pinto: Moderns offers us an intimate glimpse of Pinto's world, a world of exquisite luxury, a world in which, by Pinto's hand, elegance and abundance thrive. His clients are among the world's elite.

In this book, the first in English to deal exclusively with Alberto Pinto's modern interiors, we are offered a privileged look at some of his most exciting commercial and residential work, including the new Club Méditerranée, the renovation of the famous "La Mamounia" Hotel in Marrakech, a hotel in Gstaad, the Balmain boutique in Paris, a private Boeing 737, a five-masted private yacht, a vacation house in Marbella, and an apartment in Paris.

It is with good reason that Alberto Pinto's interiors have appeared on the covers of the world's leading interior design and architecture magazines and that his life is well documented in the society pages of the world's newspapers. He stands beside his clients, inclined to an appreciation of the finer things. In Alberto Pinto: Moderns this is sumptuously evident.

5 out of 5 stars A book of great taste.......2005-09-04

I just loved this book. I waited a month to decide on buying it, since it was a pretty expensive book. I now own this book, and although this book does NOT tell me how to decorate my home, I still get inspired by the pages and pages of photos and sketches. There is a boldness of style, and in certain photos the uses of white and black have an almost Gothic feel. I also love the humor of scales that he plays around with. His uses of materials just wowed me.

Anyhow, if my library had this book, I could learn all of the above, so why did I "buy" this book? The reason for committing to buy this book was for one single reason; I could see the sketches he had made for the projects, and compare them to the actual interior design that was executed. The book does not show processes of sketches, only the finalised versions. But for me, seeing how his visions could translate so literally into a photograph blew my mind. It felt like he could just work things out in his mind, and carry that vision out into solid material.

I do wish I could have seen more of the construction processes, but the book did not promise it, so I can't blame them for this. Hope this helps. Grins.

PS. Since there are so many beautiful photographs, I feel like I am traveling the world by just flipping through the pages.

PPS. I also liked the biography given. His taste is said to be "eclectic", and I identified with his growing up in Morocco, and being influenced by Parisian styles. Here's a quote that sums up his amazing style: "As time passed, when Pinto analyzed his unique decorative vocabulary, he would realize that his love of daring juxtapositions, lavish use of colors, love of comfort and sense of pomp were derivative of his oriental Maghrib. In the meantime, he amassed quintessence of worlds of design from his travels, namely American practicality, British chic and French elegance."

5 out of 5 stars review of Donald Judd Colorist.......2000-09-24

A book which offers an exploration of an often neglected aspect of Judd's oeuvre, this series of essays questions the long-standing acceptance of critical writing regarding Judd's work in particular and Minimalism in general. Expanding his role as more than a strict formalist, these writers portray Judd as a sensualist and illusionist. Pointing out Judd's beginnings as a painter, and Judd's own pronouncements that he considers himself to be a painter, the collection of essays denies the limited definition of Judd's work offered by most critical writing as strictly formal, anti-illusionist, geometric, repetitious, and industrial in manufacture and material. Instead, these writers note the highly reflective surfaces of brass or aluminum Judd employs to effectively dissolve the forms themselves through their multiple reflections of adjacent surfaces.

Judd's use of color is emphasized through comparisons with the late career pasted papers of Matisse. The concept is offered that when Judd cuts the colored plexiglass so often incorporated in his work, he is literally cutting color the way Matisse did his colored paper cut-outs. Many of Judd's box sculptures utilize reflected color from the translucent plexiglass that often gives the smooth metal surfaces the illusion of being painted.

Fittingly, Judd himself is given the final word. In his essay "Some aspects of color in general and red and black in particular" (1993), Judd discusses in introductory terms his obviously complex color theories, influenced by years of research into the writings of theorists and other artists. Interestingly enough, Judd spends a good deal of time discussing his use of space, which he claims as largely uncharted territory, except in his own work. This focus on the spatial aspect of Judd's work is somewhat at odds with the other essayist's insistence on color as a dominant feature of Judd's oeuvre.

Judd reveals his concept of red and black as a two-color monochrome, and other ideas of how colors and values may be thought of in pairs. Judd states that he had difficult decisions to make for his late polychrome objects, as he wanted the color combinations to be neither harmonious nor disharmonious, but rather have them all "present at once."

5 out of 5 stars If colour is the Question ?.......2000-05-27

Donald Judd has always showed colors in a different perspective, using canvas that you can almost smell, touch and fall in love with These book its a master piece that will make all your sences explode.

      Book Description

Joe Kita has had a good life. He has been happily married for more than 15 years and has two beautiful children. He is a successful journalist. He has lots of friends. Still, at 40, he wonders about missed opportunities: What would have happened if he had asked out that coed? What if he had learned to surf? What if he'd been nicer to his dog?Afraid of having the same pangs of regret at age 80 and no longer satisfied with leaving good times to chance. Kita deliberately revisits 20 crossroads in his life and tries to relive them. In Another Shot, he chronicles his crazy year with humor and inspiration. Along the way, he gets to the bottom of what happened to his first car-- a beautiful 1979 Camaro-- and ponders whether choices really matter and what determines one's place in the world. Some of Kita's adventures border on the absurd: A lifelong skinny boy, Kita yearns to have six-pack abs, and he's willing to perform almost any exercise to get them. Having never won a large stuffed animal, he heads to a carnival with a wad of bills in hand, determined to leave triumphant.Other stops on his journey are more common to men his age: He's lost his hair and he wants it back. His sexual peak came and went without him. He's never truly tested his manhood.More than anything, though, it's his relationships with other people that have affected Kita-- and these are the chapters of his life that he is most eager to edit. His relationship with his mother has never been great. His father died before he could say goodbye. His harried work schedule has caused him to miss out on time with his kids. His quest to find God has been unfulfilling.Regardless of the original regret and its final "outcome," each experience alters Kita's perspective and will alter yours, too. A poetic narrative organized by specific regrets, Another Shot provides an insightful glimpse into the life and mind of a regular guy. It's a tumultuous and sometimes uncomfortable journey. But Kita is hilarious, insightful, and-- most of all-- inspiring enough to make you ponder: Why not give it another shot?

      2 out of 5 stars Sorry Joe.......2006-01-29

Joe, you seem like a nice and sincere guy, and I would like to have a beer with you sometime, but this book is very boring. In fact it is more interesting to read the programming section in my VCR manual.

3 out of 5 stars How Life Could Have Been, If Only........2005-05-11

This funny (and sometime sad) memoir of a midlife crisis, a man remembering the past and wondering what it would have been -- if only he had made some different choices, chosen the other fork in the road. He quotes Joe E. Lewis, "You only live once but, if you work it right, once is enough." He feels he is a man with no regrets, but we all have regrets, for saying the wrong word, for reacting in a bad way to a slight, and for marrying the wrong person.

He starts out with two short stories; the first about Jeff Besos, founder of Amazon.com who used basic logic to start a new frontier in his life. Thank God for Amazon.com! The second was about George Plimpton in New Mexico about chasing bats and a t-shirt too small. This is a story about missed opportunities. He had a mixed-bag journey and lived an 'adventure in possibilities.'

He said, there is 'no sadder story than that of "small regrets'' -- I've had some large regrets, so he's way ahead of me in the game of life experiences. He feels his actions were most accidental, and wished he'd had 'another shot' and ponders life's lottery -- could it have been better? God gave us 'free will' to develop our own potential. If we fail to carry through, it is only because we took the wrong fork in the road of life.

In these twenty chapters, the most important events, he revisited crossroads in hopes of reliving them. We can do that without getting out of our own homes, just get old enough and you will constantly relive what was important and eventful and ALWAYS wish you had done something different. But then, we wouldn't be the person we are now, as life experiences make the man.

Don't we all wish we had acted or reacted differently at times of crisis, and wonder if we could have been happier. No one is really happy these days. Our ancestors accepted their 'lot' in life, but mine weren't happy to have been born poor. Are the rich happy -- only at times! Money does not insure happiness now or in the past. Oh, it helps to have the good things in life at your fingertips, but they are just objects. They are not life. Only accomplishment and fulfillment at any age can truly be termed happiness. Be proud of what came your way as it won't come again.

I value certain people, not the many possessions I lug around. The past is in the past and cannot be resurrected. I was happy once, the few years I sang on several local talent shows on radio, television, and on the stage of the Tennessee Theatre (back then in my youth). It didn't matter then whether you were from a wealthy family or a railroad man's household. Talent is talent. I was happy again when my first child was such a delightful, bright, beautiful extension of myself. He's always thought he inherited his curiosity and intelligence from his dad! Wrong -- as was the second one feeling that his writing ability came from his English teacher dad. I told him when he first started that it had come from me. Did he listen, did he believe, of course not!

Well, I was rewarded with the 'postscript', born 13 years after his brothers. He wasn't my 'Ligeia' but finally someone just like me! Later, his daughter Chrissy was proof of the gene pool-- like her grandmother in many ways, even looks. You can't fool Mother Nature. Well, her outgoing personality and spark put the eight-yr.old me in the shade.

Joe Kite, a seasoned journalist, has traveled the world (and didn't have to pay for any of it), had life experiences we all would give 'an arm and a leg' for. And yet, he questioned how different choices might have made him happier. Not in the romance department -- he found his soulmate and is still married to the mother of his children. They live in Pennsylvania, but his voice does not have the harshness in speech as my sister-in-law who was from that area. Believe me, they are as different from a Southerner as black and white. He sound like a delightful person to know. Previously, he had published WISDOM OF OUR FATHERS. Now, this 'running around in his mind' memoir is full of his own wisdom.

      3 out of 5 stars I wouldn't give it another shot........2002-08-13

Another Shot by Joe Kita, I listened to on
the way to my vacation. In this book, the author tries to relive, or correct his regrets.
The book made me wonder about my own regrets. I dislike that word. Regret implies
that I would change something in my past. Each thing that happened to me, each
decision, lead me to the place I am now. I try to actively design my life and I am
intensely happy and pleased with my life. So although I am sometimes curious about
"what ifs" in my life, I can't truly regret any decision, because any minor change may
      have altered my present.

In spite of disagreeing with the author's premise, I still enjoyed parts of this book.
The chapter about his mother is hilarious. Is it worth it to read the whole book? I
don't know. The book is written in a hokey way, which can be a bit cloying.

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-05

Disappointing is the word that comes to mind having read this book. I loved the premise, and even some of the specific regrets, such as trying out for the high school basketball team again, and living like you're filthy rich for a week. My amusement ended quickly, as the author began injecting his own share of disfunctionality into the book. I quickly found out that he's a fallen catholic, doesn't get along with his mother, never made peace with his father, and varoius other "issues". Before long, I could no longer relate and stopped reading. I did finally finish the book, but it wasn't worth it.

      4 out of 5 stars I Laughed...I Cried.......2001-06-21

Joe Kita acted on twenty of his what-ifs and he reports on the process and the results in a fun way. I laughed a lot and shed a couple of tears. Then I began making my own list of things I've never done but want to do, or things I did which I'd like to do over and see if I could get different results. Seeing Joe try and succeed - or try and not succeed - made me want to try.

        Book Description

"If you ever wanted a second chance, if you ever wanted to do it all over and do it right, then listen to Joe Kita. He did it for all of us." (Regis Philbin)

We all have our regrets, but rarely do we give ourselves a chance to try to do anything about them. After turning forty, Joe Kita set out to relive his top-twenty personal regrets. In Another Shot he recounts his adventures-from the hilarious to the poignant. Dismayed that he may have missed his sexual peak, he convinces his wife to enroll with him in sex camp. Bemoaning the selling of his first love, a powerhouse Camaro, he hires a private detective to find it. Still smarting from the sting of getting cut from his high school basketball team, he convinces his alma mater's coach to let him try out for the squad again-more than twenty years later.

Above all, though, it's Kita's relationships with his family that haunt him. His interaction with his mother has always been strained, and he attempts to understand her by taking her out for a special night. Kita even tries to get in touch with his late father through a medium because he never got to say goodbye. At once witty and profound, Another Shot offers a glimpse into the hopes and worries of a regular guy and speaks to everyone about not letting regrets keep us from enjoying the rest of our lives.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Pleasant.......2005-03-20

We got the audio book version of this (it is read by the author, and while abridged, runs about 6 hours over 5 cd's). It made for good listening. Do not expect an epiphany. This book does not contain the magic answer to "Life, the Universe, and Everything." Rather it is filled with simple, common sense reminders of what we can do (or try to do) to make life more pleasant and rewarding. Joe Kita takes a look at some of the regretes he has in life, and goes back to address them (with varying levels of success). If nothing else, it is an honest look into the life of another person, and that in itself can be helpful.

        1 out of 5 stars dreary.......2003-01-17

I picked this book up while I was traveling for work, hoping that it would provide some light entertainment. Well, the entertainment was pretty light. Kita writes for Men's Health magazine, and it shows -- each chapter reads like an article from that magazine, with 9th-grade reading level to match, and for all I know maybe that's where they originated. But even worse than the flaccid dreariness of the prose is now-familiar sound of a boomer struggling with his mortality. Over the course of a year, Kita attempts to resolve lingering regrets from his past. It goes about the way you would expect it to go when a suburban 40-year-old learns to surf or tries to find his old car. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this; it's just not very interesting. Sure, each of us probably should go visit all the churches in our area; the guy who finds the squid-worshipers is the only one who should write about it. Kita reaches unremarkable conclusions which he trumpets like a new gospel of mediocrity: Good sex requires intimacy!! Toupees are silly!! Religion is personal!! I'm giving it one star because I'll give one star to anything I can finish, and because the chapter about PET scanning gratified my sense of hypochondria. Everybody can probably find similar hints of interestingness somewhere in this book, but do be prepared for the aftershock when this overdose of vapid banality finally hits home.

4 out of 5 stars Romance doesn't get thrown out when kids enter the scene.......1997-06-27

I read this book for the first time after the birth of my first child, when I felt the romance and spontaneity slipping away from my marriage. Anne Mayer makes many lighthearted, yet helpful suggestions for getting it back and keeping it. It's been two months since I had my third child, and I pulled out this book for the third time to refresh my memory, and my husband's! An excellent book for any couple, whether you have small children, older children, or are just planning to have children

                      Book Description

The name of Robert FitzRoy, captain of the Beagle, is forever linked with that of his most famous passenger, Charles Darwin. This exceptionally interesting biography brings FitzRoy out of Darwin’s shadow for the first time, revealing a man who experienced high adventure, suffered tragic disappointments, and—as the inventor of weather forecasting—saved the lives of countless fellow mariners.
John Gribbin and Mary Gribbin draw a detailed portrait of FitzRoy, recounting the wide range of his accomplishments and exploring the motivations that drove him. As a very young and successful commander in the British navy, FitzRoy’s life was in the mold of a Patrick O’Brian novel. Later disappointments, including an unpopular tenure as governor of New Zealand and a sense of dismay over his own contributions to Darwin’s ideas of evolution, troubled FitzRoy. Even his groundbreaking accomplishments in meteorological science failed to satisfy his high personal expectations, and in 1865 FitzRoy committed suicide at the age of sixty. This biography focuses well-deserved attention on FitzRoy’s status as a scientist and seaman, affirming that his was a life which, despite its sorrowful end, encompassed many more successes than failures.

4 out of 5 stars Robert FitzRoy: One of the nineteenth century's greatest seamen .......2007-04-28

This work, by John and Mary Gribbin, combines a deep respect for Robert FitzRoy and his achievements with sound research. The end result is a book that is accessible to anyone with an interest in this complex and multi-faceted man.

Described by Charles Darwin as being 'A very extraordinary person', Robert FitzRoy served Britain as a naval captain (most famously as Captain of HMS Beagle), as a Governor of New Zealand, and in the field of weather forecasting.

While covering the voyages of HMS Beagle, this book provides information on FitzRoy's governorship of New Zealand as well as his achievements in weather forecasting. Along the way, we obtain glimpses of the struggle between a greater understanding of science and a deep innate religious conservatism. Robert FitzRoy tragically took his own life a few months before his 60th birthday.

A fascinating book about a fascinating man.

I got this book because I am playing Fitzroy in Timberlake Wertenbakers play After Darwin. It has a wealth of information on the good Captain and enabled me to find a pathway into his mind that would not have had otherwise. The combination of excepts from the Narrative, Sullivan and Usborne's journals, and the record of Darwin himself paint an honorable picture that Fitroy would have been happy with. The recounting of the loss of a ship to the Fuegians on the voage preceeding Darwin is particuary interesting.

The father of weather forecasts and explorer of South America. Robert FitzRoy will be remembered by me. This book tells us about a great British aristocrat who gave more than he took. I love Patrick O'Brian and this could have been his but it is real story about a real person. FitzRoy was a remarkable man who history has pushed back to the shadows and labeled Darwin's Captain. FitzRoy, whose family is descended from Charles II, becomes a beloved British Man-o-war Captain, explorer, politician and eventual Vice Admiral. Mr. Gribbin gives us a picture of one of the last explorers and scientific innovators who charts South America, tries to support native rights in New Zealand and gives the world weather forecasting, yet is forgotten. His end did not justify his life. He was an amazing man who deserved more. He was faithful to his family, his country and religion. A good man and a great read.

The figure of Fitzroy lurks in the background of the Darwin saga and it is actually quite refreshing to draw him out on this score, both because of the interest in his life and work on its own terms and also for the light it throws on Darwin's early explorations in biology. Fitzroy's achievements in weather forecasting are little known, and his contribution to Darwin's education no doubt proceeds indirectly from the context of disciplined and meticulous scientific work in the Beagle's prime mission.

                            Book Description

The end of the Cold War and the opening of the Soviet, and especially the Communist International (Comintern), archives, have revolutionized the history and historiography of Communism and the Soviet Union and national communist parties. And nowhere has the upheaval been greater than in the history of the "Third Period". The Comintern officially announced in 1928 the "Third Period" in capitalist development and communist struggle. All national communist parties had to cease collaboration with social democrat and labor movements and adopt the policy of 'class against class' as dictated by Moscow. Most historians have seen this policy as a disaster leading to the demise of communism as an international force. However, this collection of contributions by an international team of scholars demonstrates not only that international communism survived, national parties flourished, fought fascism, and the Popular Front emerged as a major international force.

                            Book Description

Empirical Science validates itself by claiming its assertions are based on measurements of physical reality. However, none of its claims has any basis in physical reality. There is no physical evidence that gravity is proportional to, and therefore a property of mass. There is no way to prove that an object will move in a straight line unless a force acts on it to change that motion and, in fact, nothing moves in straight lines. The historic swirling mass of gas claimed to impart its motion to matter in the solar system and therefore account for the rotation and orbiting of planets is just an ad hoc fantasy that fails to explain any of the chaotic movement that is the solar system, and the off-the-wall assertion that chaos provides the solar system with the stability it needs if it were formed out of a swirling mass of gas is as nonsensical as the unfounded belief that particles that repel each other hold matter together. Even the measurable facts Empirical Science claims as validation are opposed by measurements in physical reality. Light, which can be physically measured to diminish out of existence with distance on Earth travels forever in space so that we can see stars at the end of the universe and the beginning of time. Objects, which come to rest with respect to the forces acting upon them on Earth are claimed to move without current force in space. Energy is always consumed on Earth but gravity, which forces objects to come to rest on the surface of the Earth, is not used up when it bends the straight-line motion of the planets into circular motion. Momentum, which is always overcome by gravity on Earth is not affected by gravity in space allowing planets in space to be bent into perpetual circular orbits. In putting numbers to things, Empirical Science can only approximate the stars in galaxies and the atoms in matter in the billions, but can tell with precise accuracy the number of electrons orbiting the nuclei of the atom of any element. It uses parallax measurements to determine interstellar distances when the errors that have to be taken into consideration to compute the measurements exceed the measurements themselves.

                            Where did science go wrong?

                            Where did it go right!

Immediately on starting to read this book, one gets the impression that this author is not an authority on the subject of science. The author has little knowledge of physics; my guess is perhaps a high school course in physics, maybe an introductory college course at most (and a poor one at that). Case in point: you will find several gross misconceptions about gravity, just on the first few pages.

On page one, the author asserts (without any explanation, which is a common theme) that whatever is making an object fall must "exist between the source and the object". Huh? And it gets worse. On page two, the author asserts that "gravity is a property of matter". This is just plain wrong. As anyone that has taken even the most basic college course in physics should have learned, gravity is a force that is proportional to mass, but this hardly makes gravity a property of matter. I teach introductory college physics courses, and I pray that no student that has finished one of my courses has left my classroom with the impression that gravity is a property of matter. To my ear, this assertion rings of someone that is scientifically uneducated. This misconception, unfortunately, is the basis for most of the author's ensuing arguments about gravity in the next few pages, all of which are founded on the same grossly incorrect idea.

To continue with page two, the author mentions -- again with regard to gravity -- that nothing is said about "how it is generated" or "how it moves from one place to another" (What does it mean for gravity to "move"? He never explains this. Perhaps he means "propagate" but then I think I am giving him too much credit), or "how it acts on matter". First, no scientist since the time of Aristotle up until the 20th century disagreed with the fact that gravity is mysterious because it acts from a distance and its origin is unknown. That is, until one scientist came along, perhaps the author has heard of him? His name was Albert Einstein. If the author had studied physics in detail, the author would know that Einstein did in fact explain where gravity comes from (it is actually a property of space) and how it acts on matter.

And I am still just discussing the first two pages. Need I go on? No, and neither need you. Read the first few pages (accessible right here on Amazon) and then I trust you will stop (go on, try it!), because any well-educated adult knows that this book is pure rubbish.

As a scientist, I'll be the first to admit that science has shortcomings. That is fortunate for me, because it means job security. Any sane scientist will admit that science has shortcomings. Can you ask questions that science can't answer? Of course you can! But if you want to read about the shortcomings of science, don't you think you should read about them from someone that is actually an authority on science?

To objectively analyze the validity of science is in my opinion -- for both scientists and non-scientists alike -- a worthwhile endeavor. So if you want to read a book that criticizes science -- and there are many out there -- try "The Trouble With Physics" by the emininent modern-day physicist Lee Smolin, or something else, anything else, besides this book.

This book is very hard reading, make no mistake, You need plenty of time and patience to read and re-read each page. You might find that some of the observations and assertions are hard to follow, and perhaps even justify, but you are asked in the same breath to apply the same rigorous requirement to those assertions and "laws" that have been delivered to us on a "take-it-or-leave-it" basis. In Short, the book tells us that we know so little about our universe, that we are not much further along than Newton or Galileo, Copernicos and others. It is ignorant of us to speculate with such authority and pompousness that we have all the answers, when, for instance, we know absolutely nothing (relatively) about the fundamentals of light and gravity. The book is saying, "hold on, don't take science at face value, question it, ask why they think so, ask how they came to that conclusion" There are good points on gravity, light, matter, energy and parallax (spelling?) amongst other things. So before we take scientists who peer review each other and want to keep their knowledge hard to get and "in-house", take a step back, look a the universe, and accept, that Science went wrong when it assumed it had all of the answers, and our foundations (ie c in e=mc2) might not be so strong. good book, very thought provoking, a great starting point to stimulate deeper thinking and consciousness. If e=mc2 is wrong, then a whole lot of questions would need to be asked. This book goes well into those questions. On this basis, It doesn't matter if the author is right or wrong in his hypothesis, he's telling us to THINK!!!!

If you have any interest in cosmological issues, buy this book and read it. Bros uses logic like a nuclear bomb in cutting through the misconceptions and irrationalities underlying modern physics. A much better read than the drek we've gotten from Carl Sagan, Frank Tipler and their ilk. And certainly a much brighter guy....
