Book Description

Animate Form is a book and interactive CD-ROM of recent architectural projects designed by Form, the office of Greg Lynn. The projects documented here explore the potential of time-based animation techniques to inform architectural design. Historically, architecture has been considered static, fixed, and inert. Through the use of state-of-the-art animation and special-effects software, Lynn transforms space and form into highly plastic, flexible, and mutable entities. He uses topological geometries to bend, twist, deform, and differentiate structure, creating unprecedented departures from preconceived notions of architecture. In experimenting with these new methods and media, Lynn has charted an innovative direction in design.

The book provides a theoretical context for the experimental projects through a collection of texts by Lynn, extensively illustrated in color. The CD-ROM is an interactive hypertext environment that fully documents the design processes used to generate the projects through animations, renderings, model photographs, videos, and texts. Using a virtual 3D interface, the viewer is able to navigate through space and select objects and animations to view at different scales.

3 out of 5 stars experimentation?.......2001-03-01

Again we should be amazed at these wonderful algorithmic creatures that have continued to sprawl for the last half a century or more. The innovation about this type of experimentation if at all it is anymore should lie on the reality and materiality of the projects. We cannot let technology invent architecture but to at least keep up if not produce it. Lynns dialogues will only be convincing if the show doesn't end up or formulate by gyp board.

3 out of 5 stars Inanimate Publishing.......1999-04-18

The text contained in Animate Form, assembled from previously published articles, continues Lynn's rhetoric announcing the emergence of a new dynamic paradigm for architectural design [animation software]. It reads like skimming a stone across the liquid surface of current [digital] architectural discourse. Each bounce touches a relative key point maintaining enough speed to progress to the next without requiring any perceived depth of substance. This presents the reader with a wide scoping text offering potential to rethink architecture as a non-static art, but does little to critically place this mode of production within practice.

The major difficulty I have with this book [animate form] is that the projects chosen have become already dated. Although monograph culture can be blamed for the presentation of more recent work, for a book's whose content is all about a newness of direction and dynamic qualities of change, the material seems incredibly inert. Even the CDRom is a very traditional piece of homepage publishing. It simply catalogues the animations for the projects and does not provide another level of understanding through hyperlink connections.

The book competently collates the work of Greg Lynn up to 1996 and is still required reading for those involved with producing new modes of architectural design through technological advancement. I guess I was expecting a More innovative approach to the publishing of Greg Lynn's material.

3 out of 5 stars Essentially just more monsters.......2007-02-12

Firstly, I bought this book sight unseen as I have a player who has practically an eidetic memory and he knows the ins and outs of a duck's bum when it comes to the Monster Manual (I to IV). So I was looking for anything different.

The book is well-presented and each monster has its own black-and-white drawing. Editing is excellent and I can't remember any typos and the layout is simple and to the point.

But its the monsters we wan't to know about. The descriptions are good and they are generic enough to fit into any campaign, and there are some really interesting monsters. The skywhale, with its potential to carry its own ecological domain on its back could be a very interesting setting, and the yoeman jelly has some very curious possibilities.

Overall I think that Fantasy Flight Games have done a good job and these critters could be very useful in any campaign.

                    4 out of 5 stars Curious Critters.......2003-10-21

A rather interesting compendium of creatures each of which has the capacity to boggle the mind. While not entirely complacent with 3.5 (none of FFG's products are so this is of little surprise)conversion is quite simple for anyone with half brain in their noggin. The aberrations and oozes in the book need no conversion but the shapechangers do due t the fact shapechanger is now a quality of other categories of monsers rather than a category unto itself. I can easily recategorize all the shapechangers in this volume as either magical beasts or monstrous humanoids (lycanthropes as a general rule become humanoids but this is the exception that proves the rule). Most of the monster described in this tome are ghastly beasts that will expand the mind of the DM using them as well as the players facing them. Generic enough to plop into any campaign with a little or perhaps no effort on the part of the enterprising GM, Twisted Lore is wicked fun for all gamers.

                      Book Description

Andre Laurendeau was known in Quebec as a leading nationalist activist and theorist through the critical decades of societal change from the 1930s to the 1960s. His own generation especially recalled his public role as an anti-conscription dissident and provincial politician during World War II. Younger French Canadians related to him as a gifted political journalist; a media figure in both radio and television; a novelist and tele-theatre dramatist; and through it all, 'an engaged intellectual'. English Canadians remember him as editor of Montreal's French language newspaper Le Devoir and as co-chairman of the 1960's Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism.

                        Book Description

A vivid memoir as well as a biography, this book details the adventures and mishaps of two students from the US who travel through a summer of rain in Nepal, interviewing Tibetans about traditional medicine. Through their journey, they learn about life in Nepal and Old Tibet, and of how traditional medicine stems from the Tibetan Buddhist world view. While grappling with problems their environment throws at them, they meet intriguing individuals who speak of their lives—some more fantastic than others—and their experiences healing. The author's tone is personal and insightful as she records the stories of Tibetan doctors, patients, and shamans, watches and partakes in healings, and reflects on other aspects of living in Nepal.

There's a lot of variety in this book...the author had quite an adventure. It was fun learning about Tibetan medicine based on experiences instead of reading some dry textbook. Especially when it came to the shamans. And the stories of Tibetan refuges were so interesting... I'm recommending it to my friends.

There's a lot of variety in this book. It's fun to read about the author's adventures in Nepal. I liked getting a feel for what life was like over there. And reading about Tibetan medicine from experiences instead of looking at some dry textbook. I especially liked learning about connections between Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan medicine--the ways that the mind and spirit can affect one's health. The stories of the Tibetan elders she interviews are fascinating. A good balance of action and reflection...

                          Book Description

From tar-ladles and snuff-boxes to sailmaker's fids and carronades: a gorgeous photographic essay on Jack Aubrey's world.

The extraordinary photography in this book was inspired by the author's reading of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. In small museums along the English coast, and in private collections, McGuane has recorded artifacts recovered from shipwrecks and preserved by modern conservation techniques. Taken together, these unique treasures provide a window onto the everyday life of sailors and officers in the Royal Navy of the Napoleonic era.

Thanks to advances in marine archaeology, it is often possible to establish the exact identity of a wrecked warship, along with the date and circumstances of its sinking. We are thus provided with a moment frozen in time: tools, clothing, utensils, weapons, and fragments of the ship itself startlingly intact.

Also photographed here is Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, proudly preserved at Portsmouth. Victory survived the great fleet action at Trafalgar, as Nelson himself did not, and is still a commissioned ship in the Royal Navy. 280 color illustrations and photographs.

                          1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2006-02-25

It lacked serious information and the photos were not that informative. I have been an Amazon customer for years, this is the only book I've returned.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU James McGuane!! .......2005-02-06

You've done history great service and truly inspired me. Publishers stamp out millions of cheaply rendered books and -- while most have "some redeeming features" -- only one in one-thousand is this inspired.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Aubrey or Hornblower fans.......2003-07-31

The main attraction of the book is the photography. Large, well-reproduced photos of important or interesting naval items. Most are dynamic and excellent shots, though a few have depth-of-field problems--Lengthy objects sometimes have the close or far end slightly out of focus.

The accompanying text for each item is brief, basically a lengthy caption. In some cases, I wanted more detail. Some of the petty details that are included are very interesting, though. My favorite was the reaction of dockworkers in England to the Navy effort to build ships of long-lasting teak in the Far East. When their jobs were threatened by foreign competition, the English shipwrights began spreading rumors of how teak splinters were poisonous!

The selection of subjects is EXCELLENT, with almost all of them in wonderful shape. The collections of a number of museums were used, as well as the ship HMS VICTORY at Portsmouth. Oddly, I don't remember any items from the outstanding naval museum at Portsmouth, however.

Highly recommended for the illustrations, though if you really want to know details of how items of rigging and such were used, you will want to supplement this book with another that has better text (and probably has greatly inferior illustrations). The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea would be a good choice.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Voyage of Discovery.......2002-12-25

Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey and Maturin novels are unsurpassed for their historical accuracy, their swashbuckling plots, and for piquing the desire of non-sailors (like me) to learn more about the nautical technology of the Napoleonic era. HEART OF OAK answers the need of the nautically-challenged for an illustrated glossary of this technology. But even better, it offers both the non-sailor and sailor alike an "insider's view" of life on board a typical British warship of the time. Through its brilliant photographs of common everyday items, it answers the small but nagging questions raised by O'Brien's descriptions of shipboard life, such as what did the grog cup of a common sailor look like, how big is a holystone, and what's a deadeye and how does it work? HEART OF OAK is a great improvement over the usual dry nautical encyclopedias that merely catalog the naval equipment of the time. Like the Aubrey and Maturin novels, it pumps blood into the sinews of history. Handsomely designed, elegantly and sparely written, McGuane has given us a treasure trove of images and visceral insights that enhances O'Brien's works, but also stands solidly on its own as a poetic pictorial history of Nelson's navy.

                          5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful gift!!!.......2002-12-12

I'm so glad I found this fabulous book for my husband who is a HUGE Patrick O'Brien fan. Not knowing much about naval history myself, I found myself immersed for an hour or so in this great, visual history book. The photographs are wonderful - the subject matter is by turns exciting, majestically beautiful, and sometimes a bit gruesome! - the writing is concise and leaves you wanting to learn more. I'm now inspired to hit the O'Brien books myself! A perfect gift for history buffs.

                            Book Description

Historians of the Russian Revolution naturally tend to concentrate their attention upon the Bolshevik â€~victors’ and on the Mensheyiks - ideologically the closest of their rivals, - and to neglect other political movements. For the Russian Liberals at least, Dr Galai redresses this imbalance. This book traces the nineteenth-century origins of the Liberation Movement (also known as the Liberal Movement), the social and historical conditions which led to its formation in the first years of the twentieth century, its policies, influence, initial success and ultimate failure. Against the background of the political and social crisis culminating in the 1905 Revolution, Dr Galai traces the stages by which the Liberation Movement became supreme among the forces of opposition but ultimately was defeated and disintegrated. It failed to fulfil its aim of replacing Tsarist autocracy by a constitutional-democratic regime and to demonstrate effectively that there was an alternative to the extremes of Tsarism and Bolshevism.

                              Book Description

This annotated bibliography reviews scholarly work on acquaintance and date rape published in recent years. Acquaintance rape research has grown significantly since the mid-1980s, and it is often argued that acquaintance rape is a common occurrence, especially on college campuses. It is also argued that this type of sexual assault is very different from stranger rape, principally because of the socially defined and accepted nature of the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator. Works specifically on acquaintance or date rape are included, as well as earlier works that led to the emergence of the separate conceptual category of acquaintance rape. Each work is summarized, and the annotation includes a statement of the purpose, the method, and the major findings of the work. Separate chapters are devoted to the incidence of acquaintance rape; its social correlates; and its causes, effects, treatment, and prevention.

                                Book Description

Many social scientists have ignored the diversity of the women's prison population and the differential treatment to which women of various backgrounds have been subjected. These omissions have affected the type of information available on women in the criminal justice system as it relates exclusively to gender. The goal of this work is to document women's unique and gender-biased experience as participants and victims of the criminal justice system. Topics include women on death row, race and gender issues, probation and parole, female juvenile delinquents, prostitution, health and mental health issues of women in prison, social justice concerns, and educational programs. The references included highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the issues as they cross such fields as law, criminal justice, social work, and psychology, and reveal the intensity of racism and sexism often ignored by the system, but confronted by the female population in the criminal justice system.

                                  Book Description

Provides a comprehensive annotated bibliography of work on African American women published between 1975-1999. The book focuses primarily on the scholarly literature and annotates journal articles, book chapters, and books that cover the lives of African American women. This reference fills a critical void by organizing and synthesizing published work on African American women, thereby making visible the richness of scholarly work on this population. The entries cover both theoretical and empirical work as well as a number of critical essays and anthologies. While the specific topical areas covered are quite diverse, the book is divided into nine major areas, each representing a single chapter. These include: education, feminist thought and womanist perspectives, intimacy, relationships, and motherhood, health, religion, spirituality, and womanist theology, social, historical, and eocnomic conditions, work, careers, and achievement, African American women writers, and bibliographies, indexes, and reference books.

From the ancient Greek physician Agamede to physicist and chemist Marie Curie, in descriptions ranging from a single paragraph to several pages, Women in Science profiles 186 women who as patronesses, translators, popularizers, collectors, illustrators, inventors, and active researchers, made significant contributions to science before 1910. It adds a new dimension to the history of science by rescuing from obscurity the many women who overcame significant cultural barriers to pursue scientific objectives.

Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie is a historian of science who teaches at Oklahoma Baptist University.

                                        Book Description

Nearly two hundred thousand scholarly books and monographs have been published about the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era during the last two hundred years. The approaching bicentennial of these events will undoubtedly result in an extensive reexamination of this period. This work, designed as a companion volume to Owen Connelly's Historical Dictionary of Napoleonic France, 1799-1815 (Greenwood Press, 1985), expands Connelly's work to include most of the generally available books published since 1945. The book is designed to direct researchers to the materials which are best suited for their inquiry and which might otherwise be overlooked. In this way it serves as a useful research tool, providing a summary of all that is currently available.
