Customer Reviews:
Read This Book and Be Inspired!.......2005-10-21
What an exciting book! I learned about it when I toured one of the featured artist's apartments, purchased a copy, and found the book enchanting. The featured artists and their spaces are down-to-earth and accessible, truly creative, but never in an untouchable, "Architectural Digest" way. The color photographs are beautiful and I especially liked the personal interaction of Laurie Dickson with each artist.
An amazing showcase of diverse homes.......2004-01-15
Artists' Interiors: Creative Space, Inspired Living by professional photographer Laurie E. Dickson is an amazing showcase of diverse homes created by living artists worldwide. Artists' Interiors is a quality addition for any personal, professional, or community library Interior Decoration reference collection.
Customer Reviews:
I like it, but.......2006-06-04
I like this book. It's not the greatest, but it's not bad. If you're starting out painting and need some basic guidance for general skin colors it's probably ok. Where it's lacking is in most anything beyond the basic color of skin. There's no discussion of skin color in shadow, in the halftones where the skin turns away from the light, or where the skin blends into the hairline. Little about the affect of light, surroundings, or location (cheek, chin, forehead, etc.) on skin color either. Those things make or break portraits and some (me) just can't seem to mix the right colors to go with the basic skin tone of the model. I wish that had been addressed in this book... that would make it worth 5 stars (and maybe what people are asking for it these days).
Always By My Side.......2005-10-09
This book is always on my workbench. As stated by another reviwer, the "Suggested Tonal Charts" section has been invaluable, and has inspired me to experiment with colors not on the list. By step-by-step examples, and by showing works of various artists, you really get a sense of color technique. I also recommend this book to model figure painters; after studying this book, the skin tones on my figures have started to look more natural instead of having that "exaggerated theatrical make-up" look!
Brilliant.......2004-03-11
This book is brilliant. Although it won't teach you how to paint, it will give you the greatest insight into how to mix colours for a near perfect image. Whether you are an amature or a professional, a book like this and at such a small cost is worth having on your shelf as an anytime reference.
Indispensable guide to a difficult subject.......2003-12-20
I admit it: I bought this book for myself for a Christmas present, and it was well worth the price paid. Here is information I have never gotten in art school. Though it is probably entirely possible to learn to paint the face and figure by being presented with a model in a crowded and badly lit room, there has to be a better way, and I think this book is it. Through a clever system of charts using a palette of only 12 basic colors, author James Horton shows you how to create an infinite array of skin tones for people of pale, mid-tone and dark coloring. Specific modifications for pastellists are included, and though I'm just a beginner, I was amazed what I could do following his directions when I was only about a fourth of the way through the book. I recommend this very highly for all students, whether you're enrolled in an art course somewhere or just slugging it out on your own at home. I intend to finish every exercise in the book before I go back to art school at the end of January. Highly recommended!!!
especially good for beginners.......2001-07-30
This book, with its charts of sample mixes and color tones in various media, is a great asset if you are just begining to paint portraits or people. It will give you a good basic understanding of color mixing for skin tones. ( no need to buy premixed colors! Be able to paint the nuance of people, not reduce everyone to the same "skin tones.") In addition, it discussed the effects of shadow and reflected color. Nice illustrations, photos and color charts.

Book Description
An Accomplished photographer, Baker has created a personal tribute to the lighthouse and the changing moods of the pristine island it stands upon.
Customer Reviews:
What an adventure!.......2006-04-18
Lighthouse Island : Our Family Escape is a well written description Baker's purchase and renovation of Henry Island, Nova Scotia. He was able to realize his dream of owning a lighthouse, and in this book he shares that dream with the reader. Rather than turning it into a posh rich man's retreat, he renovated it in keeping with the history and area. He has created a wonderful place to relax and "get away from it all" for his family. I highly recommend it for those who love the sea and lighthouses.
Writers Notes 2005 Book Award Winner.......2005-04-28
While no man lives on an island, Bill Baker-network steward and most recently PBS captain-resides on one as often as possible. Fascinated with lighthouses, Baker acquired the perfect 150-acre rustic retreat off the coast of Nova Scotia and rebuilt the deteriorating structures to their former austere greatness. Charming family pictures and stories help share Baker's dream come true. Bill, make room; the staff of Writers Notes is coming to visit.
Limousine Liberal shows how he spends his $$$$$$.......2005-03-02
Phony Public Broadcasting Liberal writes a compelling tale of how he could afford to buy his own island, of course, it's just a "fixer-upper." Wonder how much of his salary comes out of tax dollars?

Customer Reviews:
overhyped book.......2007-09-27
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It has one simple tip, keep your child on the stomach as much as possible. Ok, so thats great, the child will grow faster physically, maybe grow faster mentally also, as per what he says.
But I expected the book to be much more comprehensive. There are not that many exercises. Its largely a single point agenda on keeping the child on stomach. I can tell you that in one line.
Excellent Book.......2007-09-04
I do not get enough time to follow all the methods, but I still did few things as per book. My son stands by himself at eactly 7 months. He started climbing stairs at 7 month. I put him on the floor more often. This book is surely helpful.
Only thing is it's difficult to make things like dowel between doors, track. They should sell those items too as part of the kit.
want a sports star in the family?.......2007-07-02
if you want your child(hopefully the child will want it too)to be the next huge baseball, football, soccer or olympic star, then this is the book for you.
it is packed with information on how to 'grow' your childs physical development so that by age 2.5 to 3(and maybe sooner)he or she will have the physical developmental skills of an average 6yr old achieved in half the time it takes a 6 year old to do this.
it takes time and patience, not to mention equipment, but i feel that it is worth it.
also, this is the book to help your child avoid the problems of childhood obesity that is a huge problem in europe and america now.
team this book with 'teach your baby to swim' and also 'how smart is your baby?'also by the domans and youll most likely see your kids name in lights one day.
your child will thank you for it someday.
Extremely dangerous advice for newborns!.......2007-04-19
I feel compelled to write a stern warning about this book. I was excited to order it to help out my twin daughters - born 2 months premature. My jaw hit the floor when I read the very dangerous misinformation in the first couple of chapters. The author begins with a criticism of hospitals' handling of newborns. He states that nurseries should be made more like the womb to comfort babies, kept moist and at 90 degrees. He then states that the only reason that babies are put on their backs is so that nurses can tell if they are still breathing, and recommends that babies sleep on their stomachs.
This is all good advice if you want your baby to be at significant risk of death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS). First, the only safe position for babies to sleep on is their back. The author seems to believe that SIDS is only caused babies smothering themselves with blankets - this is not (although smothering is always a risk. Current reccomendations are to keep healthy babies' environments on the cool side (68 deg F.). One of the major causes of SIDS is apnea due to immaturity in the brain stem. Current sleep reccomenadtions are designed to alleviate this.
Not even incubators are kept at 90 degrees. When babies are born, they go through physical changes - such as separation from the placenta. They have the largest dose of hormones running through their bodies that they will ever have in their lifetime. Very quickly, healthy babies are able to regulate their own temperature - they are mammals and not snakes after all.
Infants in intensive care units are sometimes put to sleep on their stomachs - but they are connected to heart and respiration monitors that alarm when they stop breathing or their heart-rate drops.
I am completley shocked that someone billed as a child development expert has absolutely no knowledge of the risk of SIDS. Granted, back-sleeping is not the best thing for physical development, which is where there are exercise programs to compensate for this. Tummy time is important while baby is awake and supervised.
Please do not follow the newborn advice in this book. I can't get past this, and maybe there's good advice in the rest of the book.
Excelent Book.......2007-04-06
This book will give you a greater insight into the physical development of your child and what to do to fulfill its potential, instead of letting your child grow "by accident."
Book Description
The early develpment of mobility in the newborn baby is a vital part of his future ability to learn and grow to his full potential. The authors show clearly each stage of mobiltiy and how to create an environment that will help the baby to achieve each stage more easily.
Customer Reviews:
The body and the brain are tightly coupled.......2005-07-24
The main issue of this book is that mental and physical development of a baby are tightly coupled. Physically perfect body gives more blood, oxygen and energy to the brain which reinforces the development of the body, which is most obvious for ages up to 36 months.
The author splits the development of the brain and the body to seven stages depending on age, and gives methods and joyful exercises for a baby to be physically superb.
Who cares what the sceptics think?.......2005-05-13
For those of you out there that believe the object of this book series is to "pressure" your children into becoming college professors you obviously are either not paying attention or never read the book. At NO time does the book suggest tying down your child to a chair and forcing him/her to learn to (read, arithmetic, etc...) In fact it clearly states the opposite to STOP immediately if the child is not having fun.
I believe instead that the main point of the book is to love and bond with your child (what more does a child want than Mommy and Daddy's attention?) And that the world is full of amazing wonderful things that he/she has the potential to do whatever he/she wants to do.
My father (using his own techniques - the daily newspaper) taught me to read at 2 years old and I remember (yes I remember clearly) that it was so much fun to read to Daddy about the upcoming union worker strike.
I don't care what career my child chooses.. I just want him to be happy and have the same appreciation for the world of knowledge that surrounds us.
You need to see it to believe it. How sad!.......2004-08-22
When we were once told man can fly, and go to space. Ignorant and negative humans laughed at the idea. When true love was able to be found on the internet, people laugh and mock the idea too. And so thank heavens not all humans are so negative and narrow minded, otherwise how would we see the human race be where they are today? My son, is now 26 months old, and by following what was suggested in the book, he is sure enough strong enough to support his own weight and brachiate the "monkey bar" on his own. He is also very proficient in running. I invite those with curious minds to come see the growing population of "Doman" families across the globe, quietly and surely participating in the "Gentle Revolution", with or without the help of the Institutes. We are a non profit, pro bono support group. Be very amazed at http://www.childbrain.org
Very Excellent Program!.......2003-11-10
I have read nearly all of the books in the Gentle Revolution Series and all of them are very pleasant and encouraging. These books are really only for those parents who want to make a tremendous effort on behalf of their children and who believe that their children are one of the highest priorities in life. These programs involve much time and enthusiasm on the part of the parent. I am using these programs with my son. At several days old he was holding up his head, 2 1/2 weeks he was rolling over from tummy to back, 5 weeks old he made his first scootching movement, at 2 1/2 months he was rolling from back to tummy, by the end of four months old he was creeping on hands and knees and beginning to pull himself up onto things. This is an amazing program and I plan to use the methods for any children I have in the future. I also did not follow the book 100% so I can only imagine that if I had I may have acheived even better results with my baby.
what do you really want to believe.......2003-03-28
Of all the books I have seen, heard, and read I have to say the only one I like and have picked up numerously for reference is "Caring for your baby and young child" Everything else I thought was silly to even bother with. Because this book gives you advice from everything about what to feed your baby to how to tell if your child might have the flu. If your a parent get this book and never pick up another one. Dont read about how to physically improve your child or make your child have the highest IQ they are children let them be just that. They dont need expectations they dont need to be able to read when they are 3. Yes encourage them to want to explore, read to them, count with them buy a kid yoga tape but whatever you do with your children let them have fun and dont pressure them. We have enough pressure when we are older lets not make the kid prep for college in the womb. Dont "spoil" your children, punish them when it's needed; but have fun and enjoy them dont drive yourself crazy on how to have the best child in the world and be the best parent in the world, just go with the flow and be the least stressed parent in the world. Thats really how you get the best children in the world!
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2007-09-12
This book was great, easy to read and very informative. The author gives parents guidance on raising a "Superb" child, but then says that we should only do what we feel comfortable with. I recommend this book to all parents and expecting...
The body and the brain are interdependent.......2005-07-24

This book will give you a greater insight into the physical development of your child and what to do to fulfill its potential, instead of letting your child grow "by accident."
Intelligence can be physical too.......2002-12-13
This book is quite a breath of fresh air - addresses an area that has been ignored. Pity that it's on limited availability at this time.
This is a guide to how parents can encourage and maximise the opportunities for babies to develop physically (from birth to pre-school). The underlying premise here is that not only is a baby a latent genius intellectually, but also physically.
The book shows how babies have to progress one step at a time, from crawling, to creeping, to balancing, to brachiating (ie swinging), to standing, to walking, to running. Various exercises are suggested for each stage to help development along. The key is that the development of each motor skill corresponds to the development of a specific part of the brain that manage such activity (medulla, pons, cortex, etc). Each activity is a prerequisite and foundation for the succeeding one. Mr Doman asserts that physical development will stimulate and maximise mental development. If you're looking for scientific research and citations for his assertions, you won't find much, as he says that most of the conclusions and practices were developed in-house at his Institutes.
The exercises (and instructions for making various equipment) are well described, with many photographs of joyful children doing them. Like his other books, Mr Doman's joy with his work and with children clearly shines through, and reading his book is an uplifting experience.
More controversially, he is an advocate of the baby spending more time on its tummy in order to develop the ability to crawl & creep. An increased risk of SIDS? He is also very negative on strollers and playpens that restrict mobility (and by implication, physical and mental development of the baby). To an extent, one will have to choose the extent to which one wants to integrate his recommendations into busy lives.
Personally, my conclusion is that what he says makes sense, and I will certainly try his recommendations after the birth of my first child.
Stong body, storng mind, help your childreen excell.......1999-09-21
When it comes to improving our children's life there are not enough stars in heaven to rate this book and the contribution Glenn Doman has made to mankind. It is dirt simple, a developing brain needs lots of oxygen the more fit your child's body is the more oxygen it can deliver to the brain My degree is in Education, and I am a student of life and how we, and why we learn, Glenn and Janet have written several books that clearly explain why and how to increase your child's potential. The philosophy is sound and the methods are well proven. There is but one thing to consider, are you willing to develop children that are smarter then your self and give them a real chance to excel. If so read the books, understand the philosophy and consistently employee the methods. Your children will be greatly rewarded!!

This comprehensive reference book on the battles of the ancient world covers events from the eighth century BC down to 31BC, when Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the battle of Actium. The author presents, in an exciting and vivid style and complete with battle plans and maps, all of the land and sea battles of the Greek and Roman worlds, based on the accounts by historians of the time.
John Drogo Montagu's love of classical history was fostered in childhood by an inspiring teacher. After a career in medicine, Montagu returned to the classical world and wrote this book.
Customer Reviews:
Good but not Superlative.......2000-05-21
Montague's book is great as a definitive compilation of the wars of the classical Greco-Roman world. I, however, found it lacking because the author did not go into depth in any particular battle. Battlefield schimatics, which would bring an entirely more comprehensive depth to the text, are rare, and the military tactics of some of the world's greatest generals find themselves subordinate to the breadth of the subject itself.
Nothing but battles.......2000-04-23
This book is sure to become a gem someday, at least for wargamers.
Right from the start the author lists all the major and minor battles from the Persian Wars through to the end of the Roman Republic. When he can he lists the size and composition of both armies involved, a little background to the particular battle, what happened, and the end result. He also makes a mention of how "trusted" his data is for each battle. The battles are listed in chronological order, with a heading of each campaign or war they occurred. After each description are references to some more common original sources (Thycudides, Xenophon, etc) for those that wish more detail.
He has some excellent geographical maps for the Hellenestic world, marking most major cities (on some level) involved or mentioned in this book. Montagu provides some excellent indicies & timelines of the battles, the partcipants, and the outcome. He also has a good discussion of the validity of his reported "facts" right at the start.
This book could be helped out with more diagrams of individual battles - there are precious few of these. And this book is also not the end-all of information about any particular battle or war.
But it will be an invaluable reference for me, and it contains more than enough information and references to be an excellent starting point for further research. This book is sure to grace the shelves of most wargamers' and military historians' libraries.

Book Description
Wright presents this collection of six essays on aspects of black history. Each essay is based upon a critical historical methodology that is comprised of, among other things, a racial analysis, an intersectional analysis, rigorous logic, conceptual integrity, and a critical analysis of ideas, words, and images. Critical of the romantic approach to the subject, Wright seeks to uncover a deeper analysis, knowledge, and truth regarding aspects of black history, even when it involves the presentation of material and viewpoints that some might find objectionable. He predicates these pieces on the idea that history is still a valuable subject, firmly rejecting the postmodern view that it has lost its validity. Wright demonstrates that black history is a vital and necessary subject, not only for black people, but for all Americans. A critical black history is itself, Wright contends, a device to evaluate American history in a critical manner, to get into the subject more deeply, and to adduce deeper knowledge and truths about it. These essays show the author's interest in strengthening that critical capacity of black historical writing and his belief that this is a primary and necessary means to maintain the viability and productivity of the academic discipline and to ward off its detractors.

Book Description
In an evaluation of the strengths and limitations of artificial intelligence in a number of intellectual domains, Wagman draws comparisons with human cognitive ability in those domains, and assesses its role as a theoretical model, as a collaborator, or as a competitor of the human mind. This book distinguishes itself in its structured and detailed account of advancing intellectual developments in the science of artificial intelligence as opposed to a highly technical or vague philosophical treatment of the topic.
