Book Description
An inventive decorative artist presents his own interpretation of several European painting styles, showing crafters at all skill levels how to create charming pieces that will complement any decor. The book begins with a brief historical survey of European folk art. The first chapter is devoted to supplies: working with acrylic paints, selecting brushes, and gathering other essential materials. After reviewing several basic painting techniques and how to correctly prepare surfaces, the author presents detailed demonstrations of the decorative painting styles of England, Norway, Holland, Germany, and Russia. The projects feature motifs traditionally painted on wood, metal, and porcelain, and incorporate a range of techniques, including decorative strokework, working wet-in-wet, and antiquing.
Book Description
The most comprehensive collection of the photographer's work ever published.
Dorothea Lange: Photographs of a Lifetime begins with her portraits from the early years, when she was a fashionable studio photographer, and moves into the classic images that established Lange as the preeminent documentary artist of her time: the Depression bread lines and demonstrations, the blighted farms, the migrating farm families, and the makeshift, desolate tent camps. The book concludes with her photographs from the final years, when Lange traveled the globe, finally turning the lens on her children and grandchildren and the familiar objects of her daily life.
In a penetrating critical biography, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Coles offers an incisive study of Lange's life and work.

Photographs of a Lifetime Book.......2007-01-09
Interesting book , history in photos with written words. Found it in book store for twice as much. The book store suggested to buy it on line. So glad I did.
Beautiful Photographic Collection.......2001-10-14
This anthology is a well-packaged, heart-warmingly first-person annoted retrospective of Lange's career. Enlighening glimpses into Lange's personal point-of view are offered here, showcasing her stark Depression-era WPA migration shots alongside her later vignettes of the American western plains and western coastal dwellers captured in their every day routines. Therein lies this collection's strength and weakness: while her Americana movement captured a rural slice of America which later mediums still struggle to duplicate, that subject matter still did not match the sheer horror and power of her WPA work, which captured the raw strength of the human spirit during life-threatening crises. The diversity of this collection makes it an essential introductory volume, however.
Photographs of a Lifetime.......2001-05-25
I had just recently seen a Lange exhibit when I bought this wonderful book. It starts with an essay on Lange by Robert Coles. Then it moves into her photographs and her own words. Her work is beautiful on its own, but to have the photographs and her philosophy side by side is an enriching experience. The photographs fill the entire book so it's a great read and a nice coffee table book. The images are primarily from her depression photos, but there are also pictures from around the world, her family and her early portraits. I also like that they included photographs of her and her oak trees. Dorothea Lange was a woman with such a unique perspective on life. I feel that this book does an excellent job of presenting her work.

Hold it sideways and have some fun........2003-11-02
You have to hold this book sideways to read it so there you already look a bit Mad to begin with.
In the 1950s America was a very conservative place so when Mad hit the newsstands of anytown USA it was like the cultural equivelant of an A-bomb going off. Mad parodied anything that moved and was freshest and most vital in the beginning of its run.
The parodies remain a fresh today as they did then with hundreds of small sight gags that will take more than one rereading to find.
Classic humor from The Usual Gang Of Idiots.......2002-04-12
Funny stuff from the early days of Mad. The crisp b&w art in this 50th anniversary edition looks great. Handy paperback size. Be sure to check out the 1st volume of this series, "The Mad Reader".

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2004-02-08
A friend of mine had to read this book for a class. He thought I might like it because I am studying Sports Journalism.
The book really helped me understand what I had to do to become a sports journalist/broadcaster -- it was incredibly helpful.
I especially liked the real life anecdotes The Sports Guy used in Part 1 of his book. I felt he poured his experiences onto the page in a way that motivated me to pursue this field in ways I hadn't considered.
I thought it was a really good book.
Considering a career in sports journalism? Read this book........2003-02-05
Part textbook, part encyclopedia, part biography, part motivation, this book traces the pursuit of a career in one of the most highly competitive, often visible and usually underpaid areas of Journalism (broadcast and written) - Sports. The author takes you behind the cameras, glossies and newsprints for a close up look at this good, bad, ugly, humorous, trivial, inspiring, exhilarating and curiously idiosyncratic world. The second half of the book contains places and resources you need to start your career and to continue to refer to in the future. The first part is mostly personal anecdotes, advise and background on his qualifications to author on this subject. Easy to read, useful as a college level teaching aid or to send your kid off to college with should he have such aspirations. Would not recommend for high school (language and some context).

Sew and Go Kids.......2004-03-19
This book is a bargain for parents who make children's clothing, because the patterns (multi-size) are included. The simple summer tops for girls, and the pj's are nice and will be easy to make. The fleece vest(the longer one)is also cute. The beach cover-ups, puppet theater, etc. are also great additions. Truth be told, the scarf dress and bike helmet covers are not items I would make. This book is a good value.
This book is yucky!.......2003-09-30
The poor children who had to model these styles must be terribly embarrased. You could dress your children better if you found clothes in the garbage. I wouldn't waste my time or money on this one.
Book Description
This book provides new light on the way the Argentine forces were organized for war, the plans and reactions of the commanders, the sufferings of the soldiers and the shame and disillusionment of defeat. Martin Middlebrook has produced a genuine 'first' with this unique work.
Martin Middlebrook is the only British historian to have been granted open access to the Argentines who planned and fought the Falklands War. It ranks with Liddel Hart's The Other side of the Hill in analyzing and understanding the military thinking and strategies of Britain's sometime enemy, and is essential reading for all who wish to understand the workings of military minds.
The book provides new light on the way Argentine forces were organized for war, the plans and reactions of the commanders, the sufferings of the soldiers and the shame and disillusionment of defeat.
Customer Reviews:
Well written.......2007-08-15
A good book covering the angles from a different side - detailed in some areas but silent on others especially as a cross reference against the very British publications (eg Max Hastings etc).
A very good book on the individual stories and very well worth the read if nothing more than on the very different perspective from the Argentine side.
A must read if you have any interest in this conflict..........2007-05-10
I have never read one of Mr Middlebrook's books before, but I am now searching for other titles by him. Because this was one of those books that I had a hard time putting down. Up front let me say that my nationalty is British and I can remember the Falklands War like it was yesterday. However despite having read numerous accounts of the British Victory very little has been said from the perspective of the soldiers who wore the Argentine Unform. This book changes all that, and thru what where obviously some pretty intense interviews as you read this book you start to get a feeling and even an understanding of the passions and emotions of the young soldiers facing the Brits. In the western press we hear about the superiority of the British War machine during the conflict; however the Argentines did put up a spirited if ineffective defence of the Falklands. Another thing that I thought was very interesting about this book is that we get to see how and why misinformation was distributed in the fog of war. I suppose the difference between the British and Argentine governments is that we laid open the books after the conflict to the public versus the Argentines who outright lied to preserve face. Then there are the issues of the foot soldiers on the Argentine side who despite facing what is arguable the best trained army in the world, displayed uncommon gallantry far and above what the pro British press has previously reported. About the only thing I wish Mr Middlebrook had fleshed out a little more is politcs of the Argentines on the mainland.
The Falklands War from an Argentine Perspective?.......2005-08-24
For those of you looking for something different to Sir Lawrence Freedman's official history, or Max Hastings 'Falklands War', try Martin Middlebrook's 'The Argentine Fight for the Falklands'. I bought it thinking it was another Argentine perspective. But for Falklands analysts it is still worth having in the library. Pages 131-132 alone are worth the price. Two British frigates were very nearly sunk by an Argentine submarine. Why they survived makes interesting reading and is very useful for capability analysis today.

A Rare and Valuable Glimpse Into the Argentine Perspective.......2000-04-29
Prior to the publication of this book there were important gaps and inaccuracies in our understanding of the battles for the Falkland Islands. Were Argentinian ground troops cowardly slackards? Were their officers self-serving and tactically incompetent? Was a British officer attempting negotiation under a white flag at Goose Green intentionally fired upon? Was the Argentinian Air Force commanded by a political bureaucrat? The surprising answer to all these question is No, and in a careful and touchingly human review of the activities and decisions of Argentinian forces Middlebrook reveals the tragic gap that developed between Argentinian political leaders and the troops and officers given the difficult task of defending the islands without adequate support as winter closed in. The junta's colossal mistake of assuming the UK would not fight for the Falklands led to the isolation, suffering, and defeat of the occupation forces and, while ultimately setting the stage for democracy in Argentina, seared a painful wound into the soul of a country already conscious of past failures. Middlebrook's access to Argentinian commanders, troops, and families helps reveal the complex social and political landscape of a country which still sees the "Malvinas" in terms of classical European colonialism. It also reveals the operational planning and situational understanding of air and land commanders at critical points in the conflict.
A Rare and Valuable Glimpse Into the Argentine Perspective.......2000-04-29
Prior to the publication of this book there were important gaps and inaccuracies in our understanding of the battles for the Falkland Islands. Did Argentinian troops intentionally fire upon a British officer attempting negotiation under a white flag at Goose Green? Were Royal Marines successful in their ambush of Argentinian armored vehicles during the initial invasion? Was the Argentinian Air Force commanded by a fanatical maniac out to establish his service as the dominant domestic political force? The surprising answer to all these question is No, and in a careful and touchingly human review of the activities and decisions of Argentinian forces Middlebrook reveals the tragic gap that developed between Argentinian political leaders and the troops and officers given the difficult task of defending the islands without adequate support as winter closed in. Excellent and Interesting Account.......1999-12-26
Martin Middlebrook has once again shown why he is one of the best British authors covering military history. His masterful account of the Falklands, 'Operation Corporate' now has a companion volume, this time covering the war from the Argentinian point of view. The book is well told and is a delight to read and only one of very few covering this war from the 'other side'. You really have to give it to the pilots flying their aircraft against the Britsh Fleet, they had guts, they knew what they were in for but continued with their mission. This is a great story, if you can get a copy do so, you wont be disappointed!

Book Description
Revolutionary Armies in the Modern Era shows how armies are successful for pragmatic reasons and provides an international and historical perspective on armies arising in support of socio-political movements
This revisionist approach presents a major re-evaluation of the standard view of revolutionary armies, the range of attitudes towards the role of heroic individuals, the formation and leadership of armies, and the differences and similarities between such armies. Beginning with an exploration of the New Model Army of the 1640s, S. P. Mackenzie presents ten case studies from around the globe, including the American War of Independence, The French Revolution, The Zulu-Boer War, the SS Waffen and the Viet-Cong. Through a detailed analysis of source material, he examines the images connected with these armies, both historical and recent, and assesses these images in their socio-political and nationalist contexts.
