Book Description

"The importance of Ernest Batchelder as an Arts and Crafts tilemaker cannot be overstated. For his innovation in design, his entrepreneurial spirit, his living his life true to the principles that he espoused, he is a man to be admired by all generations." (Joseph A. Taylor, Tile Heritage Foundation)

Ernest Batchelder's ceramic tilemaking enterprise began as a modest backyard venture in rural Pasadena, California but quickly grew to national prominence. In 1908 this enterprising young man left a prestigious teaching position to start his own school and factory, with the goal of establishing a West Coast guild of craftspeople. By 1930 the Batchelder-Wilson Company had showrooms in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, as well as representation in virtually every major city in the United States. New York, Minneapolis, and Vancouver hosted major Batchelder architectural ceramic installations.
Batchelder remained the preeminent leader of handmade tiles in the West until the Depression forced the closure of his operations in 1932. His clients ranged from restaurants to churches to high rise office buildings, although perhaps the most striking installations remain the many fireplaces gracing modest American bungalows throughout the country.

3 out of 5 stars Batchelder Tilemaker.......2003-07-25

Not the greatest tile reference, the detail in the photos is poor and hard to see. Most of the historical reference in this book is accurate, but poorly written. I would not purchase this book early in a library building journey, save it for when you have excess money to spend and are just trying to fill and round out your collection.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written, fair photos.......2003-05-21

When the back cover of a book informs you that the author is reputable, rather than the subject is well written - take it as a warning.

This sophomorically written book is not intended for Arts & Crafts devotes, it is meant for tour guides who wants to get an "Ooo!" or a giggle out of a bus load of little old ladies.

While the photos are fair, I found myself wishing I could actually see what they were showing. I guess the little old ladies are use to not being allowed too close, but I'd like to zoom in, please.

Throughout the book, the reader is assured that the author is highly praised by the Governor of California. Perhaps taxpayers should insist their Governor spend his time more selectively.

2 out of 5 stars A paperback version would have been better..........2000-09-08

While specific to the works of Batchelder, the photo supplements leave much to be desired - they are too general (a photo of a tiled room is nice, but a few more detail photos would have been most welcome!) and there are simply not enough of them (especially when compared to works referred in text). Overall, I found the book too big (and expensive) for the content delivered.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of a unique 20th Century entrepreneur........2000-03-04

Ernest Batchelder's ceramic enterprize grew from a home-based business to a nation-wide enterprize: Batchelder Tilemaker follows his life and works, starting with his 1908 venture into entrepreneurship and his establishment of the 1930s Batchelder-Wilson company showrooms. An outstanding, revealing title surveys his life and artistic achievements.

Book Description

To make a big impression, says stencilling expert Sandra Buckingham, you don't have to re-create the Sistine Chapel. Start small, she counsels, and the rest will follow.

Buckingham's latest book Stencilling on a Grand Scale leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.

Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.

A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.

Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and Stencilling on a Grand Scale introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.

I have enjoyed thinking about doing some of this. The book gives fine guidance

4 out of 5 stars Good Technique and Steps IF you like Folk Art type decor.......2005-12-02

The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.

5 out of 5 stars The Best For Beginners.......2002-09-20

I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and Experts.......2001-10-28

I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++

5 out of 5 stars Hard Cover Quality In a Paperback.......2000-09-22

Grab this book without hesitation!

I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.

When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!

4 out of 5 stars A good guide for the pros, not DIY artists.......2004-06-15

Extremely thorough, professional guide for the professional photographer. This book is not geared for the artist who desires to do their own photodocumentation or gallery submission photography. There is no doubt that this author is an authority in his field.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to get started.......2001-02-07

If you want to photograph any sort of artwork, this volume will get you going. All aspects of the task are considered, and the text is lucid, with plentiful illustrations. Various sorts of film, lighting, camera gear, filtration, testing, and lighting technique are covered. These things are not just catalogued, but evaluated by the author based on his years of experience.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable technical detail required for art photography.......1999-03-06

As a photographer of works of art the indepth technical detail in this book is a necessity for me. Of 4 books I own on this topic, this is the most comprehensive. It has become my 'bible'. I am recommending it to our local Art Guild members who are serious about the need for accurate color slides of their works.

      Book Description

This marvelous collection contains 150 hilarious cartoons--both old and new--by John Troy, one of America's most gifted outdoor humorists. They treat all forms of fishing, from dry-fly angling for trout to party-boat fishing in salt water.

From the man standing in the prow of a storm-tossed lifeboat casting a fly rod (while his fellow shipwrecked passengers cry for mercy: "For the love of God, man, switch to wets... they'll never rise in seas like this!") to the new arrival at the Pearly Gates in full fishing gear (who is told, as every angler is at one time or another: "You should have been here yesterday. They were really biting."), this priceless collection of brilliant wit and laughter will entertain anglers everywhere. It makes a perfect gift for anyone who loves to fish.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing through prison walls.......2005-08-06

Dannie Martin was an old-time con -- he robbed banks, he didn't rat on his partners and he did his time by minding his own business. Until a stint in the federal prison system led him to send a story to the San Francisco Chronicle, where Peter Sussman, editor of the Datebook section of the paper, published it. And that's when the trouble started. Dannie's clear-eyed unapologetic but fearless snapshots of prison life exposed the outrages committed by guards and administrators. This led the federal Bureau of Prisons to crack down on him and in turn led the Chronicle to sue the prison system on the behalf of Dannie and the paper's First Amendment rights. His book, a collection of the stories he wrote for the Chronicle, gives the reader an eye-opening look behind prison walls - at prisoners coping with AIDS, with drug addiction, and with a heartless and sometimes brainless system.

      5 out of 5 stars committed journalism.......2004-07-22

Well, what every time happens when one read a good book is, that lots of question are leaved unansvered, and that is the good thing, reader should use brain of his own in some matters. As some other reviewer said, this indeed is an insightful book. for those of you out there who think that democracy is the just system and that everybody in it receives justice ot whatever interpretation of the word you have in mind, this is the book for you. You'll learn that line beetween just and unjust is often so thin that one could say it does not exist. Stretching the concepts of right, and humane, of liberality, justice, crime and punishment, this is the book that should be read by every person who thinks the worls is set in order. Don't take me wrong, this is not some kind of anarchistic manifesto, or political pamfleth, this is the book that was written by a man who had an "inside information in system" and inside iformation being the criminal, prisoner even. Read the book and you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing but True.......2001-07-29

In this book, Dannie Martin and Peter Sussman have done more to shed light on the idiocy of our prison system than any other book I have read on the subject.

Dannie Martin is a convicted criminal, and I expected the usual whining about the system and how he got a poor trial, etc. Instead, what I found was a series of insightful articles written about the prison system by someone who has the ultimate in first hand knowledge. Interwoven with that was the story of the Federal Bureau of Prisons attempts to quiet the man who was exposing their dirty laundry.

Dannie Martin is a natural writer with a wonderful sense of humor. Far from being dry, this book was extremely readable and enjoyable. I think anyone who is helping to foot the bill for the Federal Prison system needs to read this book!!

5 out of 5 stars A book that can change your perception of prisons overnight........1998-07-14

This book should be required for all politicians who vote against prison reform. Seldom have I experienced the range of emotions that this book instilled-rage, indignation, joy, sadness and shame. The authors should be encouraged to give us more of the truth about our "correctional (?) system.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring tale of a search for truth and a second chance.......1997-11-08

Committing Journalism:The Prison Writings of Red Hog written by Dannie M. Martin and Peter Y. Sussman tells the story of an essential First Amendment struggle. This collection of over fifty essays and the narrative of the struggles that they are born from, is a gripping survey of the brutal existence inside our prisons. Martin blossomed as a writer while behind bars. He left jail in 1995 with a profession and a chance to create positive energy in a world that he had previously only rebelled against. If only for the surreal drama of his suppression after touching a raw nerve in both the penal system and readers of his regular column in the San Fransisco Chronicle, the book is a must read. Yet, the eloquence and poignance of his reports demonstrate the power of finding the heart of any matter and communicating it with the skills of an accomplished journalist.

            Book Description

"I find the book extremely attractive. The dialectical perspective provides a consistent avenue from which to address the diversity (structural, cultural, developmental, and functional) in Contemporary American Families. Whereas this perspective does not claim to solve the tensions in families, it offers marvelous insights into the nature and changing diversities in families. I believe this text is particularly well suited for reasonable discussion of serious issues and provides valuable insights into the nature of families and their functioning."

--Vince Bloom, California State University, Fresno

"Teresa Chandler Sabourin invites students to appreciate the mystery, complexity, and diversity of the contemporary American family. Resisting simplistic descriptions and normative descriptions, Sabourin challenges us to open our minds and hearts to the rich, humane variety of family connections as we search for ways to accommodate the competing demands and conflicting pressures experienced in our most cherished relationships. Starting from the source of her own experience, Sabourin addresses both the darker, abusive side of family relationships, as well as the lighter, spiritual side of intimacy and love. The Contemporary American Family successfully addresses the need for an accessible and teachable treatment of the dialectical perspective on close relationships. This is a book that will encourage students of family communication to respect diversity, question taken-for-granted assumptions, and share the pain and joy and of their own family experiences."

--Art Bochner, University of South Florida

Increasingly diverse in structure and culture, contemporary families defy explanation by many traditional, linear methods. In order to understand the enormous impact that diversity has on the behaviors and relationships within the family, scholars and students need a means to embrace, rather than solve, relational contradictions.

The Contemporary American Family: A Dialectical Perspective on Communication and Relationships recognizes that families are both close and distant, stable and changing, amenable and uncontrollable. Teresa Chandler Sabourin employs a dialectical approach, acknowledging that a family’s contradictions and relational tensions may be the determining factor in its interaction. Writing in a direct and simple style, Sabourin uses this innovative theoretical position to address four types of family diversity: structural, cultural, developmental, and functional.

Sure to stimulate discussion and further research, this provocative volume examines

Designed as a supplemental text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in Family Communication, The Contemporary American Family is also an invaluable resource for students in Family Studies and Women’s Studies courses.

              Book Description

When U.S.-led forces invaded Iraq in March 2003, our soldiers weren't the only ones who put their lives on the line: so did 600 "embedded" journalists, including Katherine M. Skiba. Her riveting memoir provides a vivid you-are-there account of her experiences with the Army's legendary 101st Airborne, the division celebrated for its heroism in World War II as the "Band of Brothers."

Skiba, a reporter and photographer, was the sole female civilian among the 2,300 soldiers of the 159th Aviation Brigade, whose pilots flew Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters into the thick of battle. Her dispatches were a vital lifeline between the troops and their families and earned her a grateful national audience. Reporting on the men and women in uniform with journalistic dedication, natural compassion, and an eye for the absurd, she chronicles her experiences from "media boot camp" to the kick-off of Operation Iraqi Freedom to the fall of Baghdad, including a missile attack on the brigade's desert camp.

Taking readers across the wind-blown deserts of Iraq and into cramped seventy-man tents, where personal space barely exists and tempers can flare, she deftly and sympathetically portrays her brothers and sisters-in-arms-rigid commanders, gung-ho warriors, and daring aviators, as well as intelligence officers, mechanics, medics, and cooks, among many others. She details her dealings with the soldiers, her clashes with a battalion commander, and her friendship with a lieutenant colonel who helped keep her sane. Meantime she tells of the journalist-husband she left behind-and the encouragement he gave her when the going got rough.

Whether pounding out a story on her laptop, strapping on a gas mask at a moment's notice, or flying toward the frontlines, Skiba stuck it out despite her own doubts and earned the respect of one grizzled sergeant major, who quipped: "You've got balls." The risks were very real for her and anyone else who covered or fought in the war, even in its early days, long before triumph trailed off into something less than permanent victory. Her story testifies to the courage it took to endure such risks, while acknowledging the inevitable costs of war.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

              5 out of 5 stars Great perspective....great read.......2007-04-26

I truly enjoyed reading this book. Ms. Skiba takes the time to describe a completely different perspective on the weeks and months leading up to the invasion of Iraq and the invasion itself. This is a memoir of her time in Iraq, not a book of the stories she wrote as a reporter. This allows her to shine a light on the often ignored experiences of the soldiers when they are not in combat. The preparation, daily grind, and life of a soldier are laid out for the reader. She brings an outsiders view to the military and then allows the reader to follow her progression inside the days and lives of the men in the 101st. She is almost surprisingly blunt about her personal feelings, observations, and relationships, but the honesty is refreshing.

In 2007, it's difficult to remember the situation in 2003. Her focus and fear of weapons of mass destruction seems almost petty today, but thinking back, it was such a prevalent part of the build up and invasion, it's amazing to see the fear they struck in the men and women actually searching for them. From a journalism perspective, this event was arguably the defining moment in war reporting in the last 40 years. To watch Ms. Skiba's experiences as a reporter preparing for and entering war zone, and an awfully sandy one at that, were both different and new.

"Sister In The Band Of Brothers" is just one person's experience, but that experience is quite compelling and plenty funny. I'd strongly recommend this book, it makes for an overall great read.

1 out of 5 stars Too much about the author, not enough about the heros.......2006-06-27

After reading the Nathanial Fick book, I was starving for more on the Iraqi war subject. Skiba's book was more about her, and less about the war. I found the Evan Wright embedded reporter story to be far more interesting that Skiba's.

5 out of 5 stars A view from an Army wife............2006-05-05

As I watched the "shock and awe" unfold on the news channels, knowing my husband would soon be heading up into Iraq, I never knew at that moment there would be someone amongst my husband and his fellow commrades who would be the link between us at home and our loved ones "over there". As the weeks went by, I discovered that there was a journalist by the name of Katherine Skiba who was telling the stories of our loved ones. This book was a great read. My husband was one of the soldiers within the battalion she was embedded in, and it was funny to read her take on some of the stories, that my husband had told me about. This book gave me more of an idea of life out there, in ways that my husband wasn't able to explain to me, for different reasons. Thanks Katherine!!

5 out of 5 stars A View of the Military in Iraq From a Unique Vantage Point.......2006-02-02

In Sister in the Band of Brothers, author Katherine Skiba emerges as stronger and more tenacious than she perceives herself. A seasoned international journalist, she vividly tells of her adventures as an embedded reporter with the 101st Airborne. She relates the story of her participation in the landmark, but now familiar, program utilizing embedded journalists among the troops in the Iraqi war zone and the stories of those serving in the U.S. military around her. Skiba's writing is insightful, entertaining, and (thankfully) without political commentary. Beginning with her motivations and first inklings toward participation in the program, to journalist boot camp, to the distant and dangerous Iraqi war zone and home again, she skillfully exposes very human, intimate, and often humorous insights of herself and those she interacts with and observes. Skiba's lively memoir is a refreshing break from the typical highly politicized news of the war in Iraq that is de rigueur. Accolades to the author for leaving normalcy behind, embracing the discomforts, and accepting the risks that make our view of the war in Iraq from this vantage point possible!

4 out of 5 stars Down-to-earth view of the war.......2005-12-15

Milwaukee journalist Katherine Skiba has a taste for adventure, so she volunteered to be part of the US Army's "embed" program. Following a tough mini-bootcamp and some immunizations that sounded worse, she became part of a military unit. She flew over with the soldiers. She ate and sometimes slept with them. And along the way, she wrote dispatches to her home paper.

Skiba's no heroic figure. She accepts a male comrade's offer to pack up her gear (and realizes she's got a stack of personal items sitting around). She smokes. She oversleeps. She goes overboard telling everyone she meets about a snake in her sleeping bag. And yet she manages to complete her mission successfully.

Skiba's midwestern Catholic background seems to help her fit in, although she reports clashes with mean officers and uncomprehending soldiers. At times she seems amazingly naive, as when she speculates that surely others havae overslept and broken rules -- there are so many regulations in this army! She told an off-clor joke, over and over, not realizing the full meaning till she got home and told her husband. And she was surprised to learn about co-ed sleeping arrangements.

She returns home, realizing she has a new perspective. Her husband's SUV smashed into her car? No big deal. A soldier's wife admires her looks and she says, "I didn't look like this in Iraq."

Skiba's book was published by a university press, which means the writing style comes across as more sedate than would be the case with a mass audience publisher, such as Harper's. I'd expect less verbosity from a journalist and perhaps a lot more stories.

But I admire Katherine Skiba for rising to the challenge. In my experience, adventure is something you're glad you did -- afterward. So I admire her for doing something I wish I could do myself...in my next lifetime.

Generalized versions of the central limit theorem that lead to Gaussian distributions over one and higher dimensions, via arbitrary iterations of simple mappings, have recently been discovered by the author of this publication and his collaborators. Treasures Inside the Bell: Hidden Order in Chance reveals how these new constructions result in infinite exotic kaleidoscopic decompositions of two-dimensional circular bells in terms of beautiful deterministic patterns possessing arbitrary n-fold symmetries. These are patterns that, while reminding us of the infinite structure previously found in the celebrated Mandelbrot set, turn out to contain natural shapes such as snow crystals and biochemical rosettes, and even the DNA structure of life.
