Great book!.......2005-08-03
I found this book to be very helpful. It was beautifully written and illustrated! I now have a good idea of where I would like to go to visit and am greatful for the information that was contained in this book
Great book!.......2004-08-19
I'm a hot springs enthusiast, and this book happens to be one of my favorites. It has beautiful color photographs of hot tubs and pools, and describes the nicest and most 'developed' hot springs to visit in the state. I have already been to two of the places mentioned in the book, and my favorite, so far, is Sycamore Hot Springs in San Luis Obispo. I also plan to visit Glen Ivy Hot Springs by the end of this summer, which is also in the book. Book is reasonably priced, and it is well worth it. I own several books on hot springs and this is the only one that actually has color photographs.
Book Description
The result of a collaboration between filmmaker Harmony Korine and painter Christopher Wool, this series of experimental images tests the limits of the pictorial and the abstract, pushing the boundaries of visual and textual narrative to extremes. Korine's photographs form the basis of an intense process of layering, drawing, overprinting, and photocopying. Passed back and forth between the artists, these images are eventually reduced to ghostly shadows beneath a barrage of scumbled dot screens, random patterning, and symbolic blurs and drips. Gradually, the fragmented, distorted images serially mutate, attacked by a combination of mechanical and human processes. Yet despite the violence exerted upon it, a vestige of narrative always survives.

Dissapointment.......2006-02-22
I was very dissapointd in this book. I am a lover of Harmony Korine's work both in film and in book form, but was not happy with this book. Though I have a love for modern art as well, this book is simply poor art. I Purchased the book here for tenty some dollars and sold it to my local bookstore for four dollars the next day, poor investment.
Not what you think.......2005-03-16
this book is not what i expected, but the more you look at it the better it gets.I love Korine's work in films and am in the process of getting A Crackup at the Race Riots, but this book seems more like a series of ink blots leaving you to make what you want of the pictures in front of you. Overall it's an alright book but it's not up to par with Korine's films.
What was I thinking?.......2004-05-27
I have no idea what encouraged me to purchase this book. This was a waste of paper. And money.
Pass on this one.........2004-04-01
I liked Crackup and his films, but this book is not that good. The photos are just crappy and the layout of the book is as well. I don't know what they were going for, but they missed the mark. I was disappointed.
pure art.......2002-04-20
The always beautiful and genuine harmony korine- and the art boy who manages to transform text into image make a fabulous team!-I may be biased because it is probably imposible for Harmony Korine to let me down - but this book is brilliant and dischevelled in a brilliant way. I do believe it is the extreme contradictions in their character that gives rise to their genious!- Brilliant! Beautiful!Ugly! Genious!-....perfect.
Book Description
Building a Home Movie Studio & Getting Your Films Online is the first authoritative handbook for aspiring independent filmmakers and weekend hobbyists interested in learning how to build their own movie studio and get their films presented online.
As heralded in numerous articles in the New York Times and other publications, cinema's newest revolution is the Internet indies--films created by independent filmmakers in their own home movie studios and exhibited on the Internet. With new tools available via the latest digital technology, such as Flash animation software, Web features can be produced easily and inexpensively. Thanks to easy access to the Internet, these features can now be exhibited worldwide without benefit of a distribution contract movie deal. According to Robert Algeri, Web entrepreneur and founder of Shortbuzz.com, "Filmmakers have never had such opportunities. They can get more exposure from one day on the Web than in an entire year on the festival circuit."
"After years of puttering attempts to prove itself as a medium for mass entertainment, the Internet is morphing into a more offbeat version of television that is often more profane and always less formulaic than its broadcast and cable counterparts. And just as millions of people now get information and buy products from previously unheard of sources on the Internet, some--including a few television producers--have begun to turn to it for entertainment produced outside the traditional entertainment industry." (New York Times, 10/30/00)
Today there are dozens of web sites listing thousands of films, from feature length indies to avant-garde shorts, available to anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. Among the most popular sites are Atomfilms, Ifilm, and Pop.com. The most widely heralded Internet film to date, George Lucas in Love, became such an underground hit in Hollywood that private videotapes were passed around. In October, 1999 the film became the first attraction on the streaming-video web site Mediatrip.com. In April 2000 the nine-minute film was released as a video and has sold nearly 50,00 copies. (There are over 250 Star Wars films alone made by fans that can be viewed and downloaded over the Internet.)
Building a Home Movie Studio and Getting Your Films Online shows aspiring filmmakers and other interested individuals how to build their own home movie studio, as well as offering a "real world" step-by-step example illustrating how a film gets transferred from a home computer to a web site for exhibition. Included is a brief history of independent film and its place on the web; a step-to-step "how-to" guide to building a home movie studio and using current technology to get a film distributed online, from video streaming to downloadable films--including live internet Webcasts and recordable CD-ROMS; several case studies, describing how amateurs have gotten their material online and viewed by an audience; an appendix, detailing online film festivals and distributors; and a glossary of simple definitions to technical vocabulary.
Whether building a video streaming web site or submitting work to Internet film festivals and online distributors, this book meets the needs of anyone who wants to get their projects out to a worldwide audience.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of time and money.......2004-01-04
What's a movie studio? Sound stages, backlots, wardrobe, makeup, props, and so on. The title leads you to think you'll be able to use their help to construct at least something in your garage, spare bedroom, or other workspace. But, no. You get NONE of this in the book. The title is misleading, since all you get is the same type of shallow information that you'll find in every other home video book. The same stuff about which outdated camera to get, which outdated software to get, and blah blah blah.

ASIN: 1932051082 |
Book Description
When the megalomaniacal genius known only as MISTER DOCTOR POWERFUL orchestrates a global prison break, freeing the world's most vile (and, in some cases, inept) super-villains, Sky Ape and his crew must enlist the aid of all the heroes--every last, second-string crime-buster the universe has ever forgotten, including The Swimsuit Bastards, Caibo the Puerto-Rican Snowman and Hall & Oates--to set things right again. To make matters worse, the literature-fueled force Poeticus, the Liberal Arts Robot, threatens to level London, powered by his two-ton chromium fists and unparalleled pomposity. Book Description
That I have been able to penetrate into part of [South America's] unexplored interior, and visit tribes of people hitherto untouched and unknown, was urged as sufficient reason for the publishing of this work. In perils oft, through hunger and thirst and fever, consequent on the many wanderings in unhealthy climes herein recorded, the writer has also had many pleasant as well as strange experiences. -from the Preface He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, the "Livingstone of South America," and "Official Explorer for the Bolivian Government"... a title he wrangled for himself. A real-life Indiana Jones and sometime missionary, George Whitfield Ray landed in Bolivia in 1889, the first of many trips across "the darkest land" of South America, though Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, and Uruguay. In this reproduction of the twenty-fifth edition of his wildly popular adventures, Ray regales us with his own derring-do -- whether he's coming face to face with angry crocodiles over raging rivers, attending audiences with tribal kings in remote villages, coming under attack by vampire bats, or reveling at gaudy street festivals in ancient cities, Ray's enthusiasm for his own audacity and intrepidness is infectiously endearing.
Customer Reviews:
A classic adventure story that will never age.......2006-03-30
The title of this book is a bit deceiving, as the author actually did most of his traveling by boat. Nevertheless, this travelogue describing the author's experiences in traveling through the infant republics of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay in South America is fascinating. When first published in 1891, Ray's adventures were very popular and describe a continent that is almost impassable. Modern folklore has the 18th century Europeans referring to Africa as the "dark continent", because it was so unexplored. The reality of the time was that nearly all of South America was less explored by Europeans than Africa.
So much of South America was jungle and the governments of the region had to spend enormous sums of money to lay rail connections between some of the areas. As Ray moves into the jungles, he encounters numerous tribes that had never encountered a European. Like the early Spanish explorers he also gained from the myth among the natives that a white God existed. As was the case with the Spaniards, without that myth, he most likely would never have survived.
His accounts of the people, governments and wild creatures that he encountered are a historical record that should never be lost. The South American republics have had a difficult political history from the first days of independence. He was in Argentina in 1890 when there was an attempted coup against the government. The unusual situation existing in Paraguay at that time is also described. From 1865 to 1870, Paraguay fought a war and stood alone against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. The war led to the deaths of two-thirds of the adult male population of Paraguay. Therefore, when Ray was in the country, there were ten women to every man.
Although he occasionally dips into the crud of white European bias against the natives and their ways, Ray avoids it more than most adventurers of this time period. Furthermore, he is also frank about how he too descended from the manners of the civilized European. He describes how a chicken was thrown whole and with feathers into a cooking pot and how he was so famished that he dug it out and ate it raw. His descriptions of some of the water he drank are revolting to read. The creatures that he encountered, especially in the Amazon, were frightening, and at times that includes humans. One of the most touching passages are about a Scottish man he found in the interior of Uruguay, eighty miles from the nearest village. The man's wife had just died after they had tilled their farm together in isolation for twelve years.
In the nineteenth century, South America was a wilder and more untamed region than Africa. Ray captures how wild that area was, as he treks through most of South America east of the Andes. This is a classic adventure story that will never age.

--E. Mavis Hetherington,
University of Virginia
"This useful handbook brings together many of the most important new findings and provocative ideas about Americaâs diverse and changing families. An excellent resource."
--Stephanie Coontz,
author of The Way We Really Are: Coming to Terms with America's Changing Families
What has happened to marriage and families? What is the current state of families? Where are families headed? Where is family scholarship headed? As families face challenges today brought on by events that have changed their perception of the world, there is a need for a clear assessment of what has happened to families in the past and an examination of some data-based theories about what is likely to happen in the future.
The
Handbook of Contemporary Families explores how families have changed in the last 30 years and speculates about future trends. Editors Marilyn Coleman and Lawrence H. Ganong, along with a multidisciplinary group of contributors, critique the approaches used to study relationships and families while suggesting modern approaches for the new millennium. The
Handbook looks at how changes within the contemporary family have been reflected in family law, family education, and family therapy.
Features of this Handbook:
- Examines a diverse array of families and relationships in which people live, including chapters on alternative lifestyles, gay and lesbian relationships, economically distressed families, religion and families, racial and ethnic diversity, a feminist vision for families, older families, and the effect of computers and other technology on family relationships
- Includes both a historical review and future speculation on the subjects covered in each chapter
- Interdisciplinary contributors representing a variety of fields such as history, family studies, sociology, law, therapy, social work, psychology, nursing, and human development
The
Handbook of Contemporary Families is an excellent resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, educators, and practitioners who study and work with families in several disciplines, including Family Science, Human Development and Family Studies, Sociology, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Social Work.
Book Description
A stunning new biography that will put previous and current Napoleonic biographies in the shade. It is the single-volume account of Napoleon's whole career.
Puts to rest some of the myths surrounding Napoleon. His research is sound, his scholarship outstanding and his historical analysis well thought out; his account is a fine blend of scholarship and story telling. Ben Weider, President, International Napoleonic Society; author, Assassination at St. Helena Revisited
J. David Markham, a leading Napoleonic expert and an international writer and lecturer, brings the Emperor to life in an accurate, well-researched text that will be accessible to all, with extensive footnotes to aid further study.
Markham's insight makes this book very enjoyable reading. John G. Gallaher, President, Napoleonic Alliance; author, The Iron Marshal
Far more than a simple recitation of facts, Markham provides excellent historical analysis, explaining why Napoleon made his decisions, and what their consequences were.
David Markham has given the man and the events a totally original and new spin that is a veritable tour de force. Prince Gregory Troubetzkoy, International Napoleonic Society; author, In the Service of the Tsar: The Memoirs of Denis Davidov, 1806-1814
If you read only one book on Napoleon, Napoleon's Road to Glory should be that book.
Customer Reviews:
THE bio on Napoleon!.......2006-02-18
Napoleon's Road to Glory is a well-written and well-researched biography that could easily replace Felix Markham's classic biography of the French emperor to become the new standard biography of Napoleon I. One important way that David Markham, unlike the earlier Markham, improves upon the presentation of the older biography is by supplying numerous endnotes that provide readers with reference points for future research into certain key and fascinating aspects of Napoleon's compelling life. Moreover, David Markham's book does not suffer from the problems of obvious authorial bias that plague books such as Alan Schom's Napoleon Bonaparte.
I am especially pleased to see that he included sections on Napoleon's religious policies and vision of European unity (highlighted even more in his Napoleon for Dummies), as well as comparisons of Napoleon to earlier leaders like Alexander the Great. David Markham provides an overview of Napoleon's settlement with the Catholic Church, including an overview of the background of the situation inherited by Napoleon before Markham addresses how Napoleon sought to resolve the religious divisions of the French Revolution. Moreover, Markham, who bases most of his material on Napoleon and the Jews from Ben Weider's work, explains that Napoleon's proclamation declaring Palestine an independent Jewish state even served as part of David Ben Gurion's argument that the United Nations should recognize Israel in 1947, roughly one hundred and fifty years after Napoleon planned to issue his proclamation! Markham reminds us that Napoleon was after many kinds of peace: domestic, foreign, and religious.
Napoleon reopened the University of Pavia and granted its professors liberal stipends. In 1808, he created the Academic Palms as a reward for excellence in teaching. In Napoleon's Road to Glory, Markham describes Napoleon's improvements to Paris and other cities in France, Italy, and Switzerland as a parallel to the public works projects initiated by Julius Caesar. David Markham seconds Geoffrey Ellis's designation as the consular period as a Pax Napoleonica. As Markham puts it, if Napoleon "were Caesar, then the Consulate was his Pax Romana even in the years when there was no actual peace." Markham adds that some "consider the Consulate to have been something of a golden age of French culture . . ."
The what if?'s of history also abound in this book, as does the logic behind Napoleon's foreign policy. Readers learn, for example, that a report published "by Colonel Sébastiani . . . suggested that France could easily retake Egypt" and Markham explains Napoleon`s desire to keep the Belgian departments, because much "of Belgium is French-speaking and had always been seen as a potential part of France." And imagine the consequences had Napoleon married a Russian bride and managed to avoid invading the Russian Empire in the year following the appearance of the above quotation! Instead, the Franco-Russian alliance rapidly collapsed in such an extreme fashion that in a proclamation to his troops in 1812, Tsar Alexander cited "difference of religion" as one of the reasons why Russian peasants now consider themselves as Napoleon's "irreconcilable enemies." What is more, the king of Naples turned on Napoleon following Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig in 1813, because Marshal Murat "feared that Napoleon had expressed a resolution to . . . incorporate Naples with the kingdom of Italy."
I have graded many history assignments in my academic career at two universities and were I to assign a grade to this impressive volume, I would overwhelmingly give the book a solid A+!
Agree strongly with previous reviewer.......2005-10-27
I'm giving this book 4 stars (average of 5 stars for readibility and interest, 3 stars for critical reasoning). I can't agree more with the previous reviewer's comments; though an immensely enjoyable book to read, I was very disappointed with the lack of any serious or credible critique of the remarkable Napoleon. The book appears to be well researched, but I was left with nagging doubts over some conclusions and statements that -I believe -should have been examined more thoroughly or with a more critical analysis regarding Napoleon.
David Markham clearly has a passion and love of things Napoleon. I'd most certainly recommend this book as a very good read and is very well written.
Cheerleading as History.......2005-01-11
First let me concede some of the compliments other readers have paid this book. It is easy to read, concise, and thoroughly researched. Three stars: C level work. It is not, however, very strong history. That is not to say that I picked out anything that was incorrect or even misleading, but instead it seems that Markham's obvious infatuation with Napoleon leads him to be unable to ask hard questions about his hero. More demanding readers, much less those who are critical of Napoleon's legacy, will walk away from this book unsatisfied. This is a book written by a "Napoleonic Society of America" member for others of that same group.
Napoleon was of course subject to horrible and fictitious slander. His position and long sustained success bred bitter enemies, and we shouldn't fall into the trap of believing their deionizations. Still, Markham comes dangerously close to going to the opposite extreme. He uniformly portrays Napoleon as peace loving and well intentioned. Criticisms of Napoleon are raised in as little as a sentence and dismissed just as quickly. The book never asks hard questions.
Take, for example, Markham's explanation of why peace never managed to break out during Napoleon's time. It was always England that "wanted war." Wanting war! After WWI the terms of peace laid blame for the war at Germany's doorstep. These days we are more likely to say the great tragedy of that same war is that it seems none of Europe's leaders truly wanted it. Or how about the Cuban missile crisis? Over 13 days the world's greatest powers almost destroyed themselves. Which side wanted war? The US? The Soviets? Reducing wars of this magnitude to simple desire on the part of one side or the other is facile. There are deep personal, political, and strategic issues at work that must be understood.
Markham makes little effort to contribute to that understanding. Instead he simply says that the English could not tolerate French possession of Antwerp. Very well, then if Napoleon is as committed to peace as Markham would have us believe, why did he not surrender the city or come to some other accord? Markham simply states that the French would not tolerate that. Little more is offered. "Why" plays a small part in the analysis. Still, it seems that Napoleon's ultimate downfall in great part hinged on this decision from both sides of the channel. Delving into this issue and others, at least for a page or two, would have been worth while.
That lack of analysis makes Markham more of a reporter of old news than a historian. Moreover, his presentation of the facts becomes suspect because he is so clearly enamored with his subject.
Read this book if want to feel good about Napoleon, but go elsewhere if you want to probe below the surface.
Splendid.......2004-01-31
David Markham has written a wonderfully descriptive book that is great fun to read; I couldn't put it down. This fine work effortlessly interweaves Napoleon's life as a political figure/ruler with his adventures and conquests on the battlefield and in the bedroom. "Napoleon's Road to Glory," filled with unusual rare art, includes colorful revelations about his love for Empresses Josephine and Marie-Louise, as well as his relationships with a succession of mistresses. A terrific gift -- perfect for collectors as well as anyone interested in a clear, comprehensive overview of Napoleon's life and career. Includes exciting, vivid descriptions of the "little Corporal's" victories at Marengo, Austerlitz and other battles. Just don't start reading this at bedtime, like I did, if you expect to get any sleep.
Diana Haig - author of "Walks Through Napoleon and Josephine's Paris"
Very good book!.......2003-08-27
Along with lots of publications on Napoleon and his time currently on the market, this is very good analysis and scientific approach to the subject. What is most important, the book is written in very easy language, and it is a pleasure to read. Mr. Markham has definitely done his homework; his source table is very extensive and useful for further references. More importantly, the author supplemented his research with actual documents and artifacts from his own collection, which is rare in this days and therefore more valid. I would like to recommend this book to anyone interested in Napoleon and his times - moreover it would be nice to bring it over to as many readers as possible and perhaps to translate it to other languages.
This book should be at every Napoleonic scholar library!
Book Description
1935. Austin's first novel of young Napoleon covers the Emperor's first Italian campaign and his campaign for Josephine. Basil Liddell Hart, one of the greatest ever military strategists, wrote: It carries one along at so breathless a pace that it is only when one pauses for analysis that one realizes the immense amount of knowledge that is woven into it. I wish it all the success it deserves. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Book Description
The Japanese invasion and occupation of southeast Asia provided opportunities for the peoples of the region to pursue a wide range of agendas that had little to do with the larger issues which drove the conflict between Japan and the allies. This book explores how the occupation affected various minority groups in the region. It shows, for example, how in some areas of Burma the withdrawal of established authority led to widespread communal violence; how the Indian and Chinese populations of Malaya and Thailand had extensive and often unpleasant interactions with the Japanese; and how in Java the Chinese population fared much better.
Overall, the book provides a great deal of interesting new material on this complex subject from a range of Southeast Asian countries. The essays are grouped together by country: Japan and Southeast Asia, Burma/Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaya, Borneo, Thailand and the Philippines. The contributors include Lorraine V. Aragon, Cheah Boon Kheng, Gregory Clancy, Hara Fujio, KawashimaMidori, Paul H. Kratoska, Didi Kwartanada, Kaori Maekawa, Eiji Murashima, Ooi Keat Gin, E. Bruce Reynolds, and Elly Touwen-Bouwsma.

Earth's moon, called Selene by the Greeks, is a gray, lifeless place, interesting geologically but perhaps a little disappointing to those of us looking for strange, colorful new worlds. But our moon is only one of more than 60 planetary satellites in the solar system, most of which are entirely unexplored. In Journey Beyond Selene, Jeffrey Kluger chronicles these unsung places and the heroes who explore them: the Jet Propulsion Lab's staff of dedicated adventurers, who build and fly sleek, unmanned spacecraft to investigate other moons. "When astronauts finally did reach the moon," Kluger writes, "the lean, fleet ships of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory had already gone elsewhere."
Why explore the satellites of other planets when the planets themselves remain mysterious? Kluger describes astronomers' first realization that in contrast to the lifeless gas giant Jupiter, its moons were a veritable scientific playground:
There were big moons and small moons, patterned moons and plain moons, brightly colored moons and pasty-pale moons.... There were moons that could have atmospheres, water, and even, perhaps, a spark of internal heat. Put them together, and you had moons that could, in theory, harbor life.
Journey Beyond Selene chronicles the history of a little-understood aspect of humanity's quest to discover new worlds. From the early Ranger orbiters through the incredible journeys of Voyager and Galileo, Kluger gives credit where credit is long overdue. They may not be astronauts, but these space jockeys have the right stuff. --Therese Littleton

I think most people remotely interested in astronomy will find Kluger's book a worthwhile and informative read. Unmanned space flight is the poor cousin to human exploration of space but the story behind JPL's many probes sent into space is fascinating. Those not interested in space may find the book hard going. The end result however, is a greater understanding of the planetary bodies in our solar system and some of the men behind our greatest astronomical discoveries. The book would have merited five stars had Mr Klugar included more photographs and diagrams.
Great Follow-Up to Apollo 13 for Jeffrey Kluger.......2001-03-21
I agree with the other positive reviews placed here as of this date; I disagree completely with the Pittsburgh reviewer who panned the book. As a huge fan of Kluger's "Apollo 13" and other, less known writings, I found "Journey Beyond Selene" to be a fascinating and informative read. Although it certainly helps to be interested in space exploration and the space program to begin with, one can enjoy the book without having that orientation. That's because the personal stories behind the purely scientific stories also are so darned interesting. Kudos to Jeffrey Kluger for writing another informative and readable book.
Lively, anecdote-filled history of JPL.......2000-08-27
This is a lively, often anecdotal account of many of the lunar and planetary missions developed by NASA/Cal Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The prologue in particular is overdramatic, but fortunately it settles down after that. The focus is on two projects: JPL's first program, the Ranger lunar missions, and the spectacular Voyager missions to the outer planets. The latter in particular is covered with great thoroughness from program conception to the final flyby, and beyond. It provides some interesting insight into the politics and pragmatism behind these great adventures.
If I have a criticism of this book, it's a simple one: there aren't enough pictures. There are only eight pages worth of color pictures, which isn't enough to do justice even to the Voyager missions. I can only think it was a misguided attempt to save costs.
Overall, though, it's an easy (for this space buff, anyway) and fascinating read about some of the most significant unmanned projects of the space age so far.
Even Better Than "The Race"!.......2000-08-04
This book focuses entirely on unmanned missions and all the human participants are entirely earth-based, so you might imagine that the story could be quite dry and clinical but Jeffrey Kluger brings the story to life in a most engaging and entertaining way. This book is a real page-turner -- you'll feel compelled to read it from cover-to-cover in one sitting! He brings the characters to life and the long cast involved on some of these amazingly longlived missions. It's a fascinating story with lots of amazing facts that I never knew before the read. And, it's an even better read than "The Race" which has garnered a lot of praise and also a very good book in its own right.
Superb. Inside the space exploration industry..........2000-07-28
A wonderful book on the history of space exploration. Kluger concentrates mainly on the initial efforts to reach the moon with unmanned craft, but has good sections on one of the Apollo missions, as well as Pioneer and Voyager. For a breathtaking look at the inner workings of a space mission, read this book!
