Book Description
In this gorgeous, slip-cased limited edition of Bohemian Modern, acclaimed modernist architect Barbara Bestor takes readers on a dazzling journey through California's legendary Silver Lake neighborhood -- an area whose unique structural and interior designs are rapidly emerging as the biggest trends in modern architecture. Featuring stunning photographs set in bold, panoramic spreads, this limited edition of Bohemian Modern also comes with an elegant cloth slipcase designed in bright green and turquoise.
One of the country's hottest young architects, Bestor has fully embraced and perfected the "bohemian modern" style: a practical philosophy that is Californian in origin but achievable anywhere. It is a look that favors raw, authentic materials, brilliant colors, creative space planning, and a natural flow between indoors and outdoors.
The results, as Bohemian Modern presents, are striking: a flawlessly restored Neutra house decorated with both whimsy and restraint, a rooftop constructed for viewing the stars, a lavish outdoor garden delicately integrated into the surrounding architecture, a double-sided bookcase that soars three stories and serves as a functional art installation
there is no limit to the creativity and beauty of Silver Lake style.
Both modern and classic, refreshing and inviting, this limited edition of Bohemian Modern will delight readers with its breathtaking, vividly photographed tour of Silver Lake.

Enlightening Work.......2003-12-11
This is a beautiful book which portrays the reality of homelessness in NYC in remarkably moving portraits, and the personal words and stories of the featured homeless themselves. It is a book that is at times a portrayal of perseverance and hope while revealing both the struggles and harsh reality of pain and suffering and reasons some people have found themselves homeless, while at the same time capturing what beauty is present in their lives. It is an eye opening reminder for those of us who are more fortunate in the world. A remarkable work to be apprechiated by lovers of sociology, photography, portraiture and photojournalism as well as those who have an interest in simply capturing a glimpse of others' world that most are fortunate enough to never otherwise experience. Regarding one reviewer's comment it is a FAMILY book, I would use discretion in sharing parts of this with children, as some of the content of the personal stories is more suitable for teenagers and adults. I do think however think the photos can be shared with younger children to introduce awareness of povery and compassion for others, as well as an apprechiation of the beauty and joy ALL people can experience, regardless of economic circumstance. There is great value in fostering undertanding and compassion without pity, which I feel this unique work wonderfully does.
Fun for the whole family!.......2000-01-06
Excellent work, you can see the progress in her work, from her earlier times and on. This is an accurate portrayal of homelesness in New York. The pictures were breathtaking. Overall a very interesting and informative work of art.

More of Sparky Schulz's humor.......2000-07-07
Funny strips about the whole Peanuts gang from 1979 come in this humorous collection. The book is full of hilarious strips about old topics with a few new twists, such as Peppermint Patty's math troubles (and we find Woodstock working wonders with square roots), and with whole new topics--Woodstock and Lucy try their hands at farming, and all goes well until a boundary dispute erupts, and Snoopy the surveyor has the deciding vote in whose land is whose. Charlie Brown, meanwhile, gets sick and dizzy up on the pitcher's mound, and leaves for a short stay in the hospital, getting everybody (even Lucy) worried. Oh, and as for why the book is called Here Comes the April Fool, there is a strip explaining that as well.

Meatless Days
ASIN: 0226304019 |
Book Description
Sara Suleri Goodyear's Meatless Days, recognized now as a classic of postcolonial literature, is a finely wrought memoir of her girlhood in Pakistan after the 1947 partition. Set around the women of her family, Meatless Days intertwines the violent history of Pakistan's independence with Suleri Goodyear's most intimate memories of her grandmother, mother, and sisters. In Boys Will Be Boys, she returns—with the same treasury of language, humor, and passion—to her childhood and early adulthood to pay tribute to her father, the political journalist Z. A. Suleri (known as Pip, for his "patriotic and preposterous" disposition).
Taking its title from that jokingly chosen by her father for his unwritten autobiography, Boys Will Be Boys dips in and out of Suleri Goodyear's upbringing in Pakistan and her life in the United States, moving between public and private history and addressing questions of loss and cultural displacement through a resolutely comic lens. In this rich portrait, Pip emerges as a prodigious figure: an ardent agitator against British rule in the 1930s and 1940s, a founder of the Times of Karachi and the Evening Times, on-and-off editor of the Pakistan Times, for a brief time director of the Pakistan military intelligence service, and a frequently jailed antagonist of successive Pakistani leaders. To the author, though, he was also "preposterous . . . counting himself king of infinite space," a man who imposed outrageously on his children. As Suleri Goodyear chronicles, Pip demanded their loyalty yet banished them easily from his favor; contrary and absurdly unfair, he read their diaries, interfered in their relationships, and believed in a father's inalienable right to oppress his children.
Suleri Goodyear invites the reader into an intimacy shaped equally by history and intensely personal detail, creating an elegant elegy for a man of force and contradiction. And perhaps Pip was not so preposterous after all: "On Judgment Day," he told his daughter, "I will say to God, 'Be merciful, for I have already been judged by my child.'"
Customer Reviews:
A disappointing read . . ........2004-06-25
This is the first of Dr Suleri's books that I have read and while I'm clearly in awe of the felicity with which she writes, there is a rather disagreeable tone to her observations that sours the whole reading experience. As much as I enjoy the humor which colors the whole book - a humor, which I dare say, is intrinsic to Lahore and its people - there is an attitude of undisguised prejudice that doesn't befit a writer of her stature, not to mention a Professor at Yale. The unconcealed derision with which she refers to Muslims and Islam needs to be pointed out and deplored. She may not agree with the religious sentiments but that does not justify the kind of mockery she makes of the faith. Also, her attitude to certain relatives, in particular a step-sister from Kasur, is rather disappointing given their differences in education and upbringing. Whatever grief the latter may have visited upon the family, it certainly does not justify ridiculing her in public. It is wrong to insult someone who is not in a position to insult you back.
There are certain passages in the book however that leave you deeply moved, one being the incident of her sister's death. She who wore the rings and punched strangers careless enough to brush against her wards. "How dare you touch my sister?" There is a great poignancy Dr Suleri brings to her reminiscences and it is truly a shame that it is offset by an otherwise malicious attitude to the people and objects that are out of favor with the author. A writer of her calibre is capable of so much more.

How to Boost Your Child's Achievement in School.......2005-05-16
As a psychologist with >20 years experience working with children and adolescents I have read scores of books on motivation, study skills, and academic improvement. This is simply the best. I am so glad it is now available because for years it could only be purchased through Bernard's Australian publisher. A great book for students elementary school through college.
You can do it! How to boost your child's achievement in scho.......2003-01-20
This book gives simple, straight forward ideas from both a professional point of view, as well as the point of view of various children. It provides excellent motivation techniques, as well as warns of common distractions, and influences that deter children from success. It has inspired me to do better for my children, in hopes of them achieving great goals. The simple but thought provoking worksheets inside are wonderful tools to assist both parent and child! A must read for all parents, educators, and even for children!
Book Description
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world’s greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire. This book contains material previously published as Essential Histories volumes 3, 9, 17 and 39.

An Omnibus History of the Napoleonic Wars.......2005-09-12
This omnibus volume in Osprey's relatively new "Essential Histories" combines four previously published entries on the Napoleonic Wars in the series: The Rise of the Emperor, 1805-1807; The Empires Fight Back, 1808-1812; The Peninsular War, 1807-1814; The Fall of the French Empire, 1813-1815. Todd Fisher is the author of the first two parts and Gregory Fremont-Barnes is the author of the final two. The first "book" covers Ulm, Austerlitz, Jena and Auerstädt, Eylau and Friedland. The second "book" includes Eckmühl, Aspern-Essling, Wagram, Borodino, and the retreat from Russia. The third "book" covers the battles of the Peninsular War- Vimiero, Corunna, Talavera, Bussaco, Salamanca and Vittoria. The final "book" looks at the final battles of the Napoleonic Wars- Lützen, Leipzig and the battles in France, ending, of course, with Waterloo.
Each "book" follows a general format. Opening with the background to the war, followed by a description of the comparative situations and characteristics of the armies involved-the French, the Austrian, the Russian, the Prussian, the British, etc. This is followed by a narrative history of each campaign, and finally a description of the situation at the end of the campaign. Short descriptions of peripheral actions (i.e., usually, except for the Peninsular War section, those where Napoleon was not present) in other theaters are also included. In addition, each "book" includes one or two "portraits," short, self-contained biographies of soldiers and civilians.
One of the portraits by Fisher, for example, is of Philippe-René Girault, a soldier-musician who served during both the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Another is of Louise Fusil, a French actress caught up in Napoleon's retreat from Russia. Fremont-Barnes chooses a couple of politicians to profile-Canning and Castlereagh, as well as a common soldier and an artillery officer. Presenting, all in all, a nice cross-section of participants from the minor to the essential. Fremont-Barnes also presents an essay on the effect of the Napoleonic Wars on the arts, and also a conclusion giving the consequences of the wars and detailing Napoleon's legacy.
The nature of the book dictates that it will be written with broad strokes and generalizations characteristic of a survey-type work. Armies are often described with national stereotypes-the French fight with élan, the Austrians conservative, the Russians doggedly stoic, etc. But it is unfair to compare a work like this to monographs detailing a specific battle, campaign, army, etc. Both authors present their narratives in a readable manner. Fisher is generally more sympathetic towards the French, while Fremont-Barnes leans towards the Allies, especially the British, somewhat balancing each other. But some might criticize the emphasis on the French and British as short-shifting the other participants. Fisher tends to emphasize those battles under Napoleon's purview, while in the Peninsula "book" Fremont-Barnes emphasizes those where Wellington was present. Fremont-Barnes makes greater use of contemporary quotations than Fisher does.
As is to be expected from an Osprey book, the work is generously peppered with illustrations and maps- including contemporary prints, paintings, etc. Maps of battles and campaigns aid the reader in following the action, but the volume lacks the highly detailed situation maps one has grown accustomed to with Osprey's battle histories. Oddly, for example, there was no map of the battlefield of Austerlitz included, though there was one for the campaigns up to and following that pivotal battle.
The reader should not expect startling new theories about the Napoleonic Wars. Ospreys are not the proper venue for propounding new, controversial theories or focusing on political, diplomatic or social history. Osprey knows its customers and the focus is squarely on the military. The audience for this book would mainly be the reader with a casual interest in the subject or the novice just starting out studying the era.
I would have liked to have seen a brief essay appended at the beginning giving a quick overview of the general state of the military sciences, branches of service, weapons, tactics, etc. of the day. This would have made the book even more accessible to the novice. Had the book started out as a single volume Osprey might well have included something along these lines. This would have been in my opinion more useful than the rather lop-sided introduction included in this volume.
The book includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading and an index. If you already have the four previously published volumes you don't need this (unless you are a completist). This volume however is a substantial savings at $24.95, compared to $14.95 each for the individual volumes.
Todd Fisher is the Executive Director of the Napoleonic Alliance, and Chief Executive Officer of Emperor's Press which specializes in Napoleonic history. Gregory Fremont-Barnes, who is a professor of history, also wrote the French Revolutionary Wars volume in the Essential Histories series.
I give this 3 1/2 stars.

Book Description
This study contends that historians and intellectuals failed to understand the difference between race and ethnicity, which has in turn impaired their ability to understand who Black people are in America. The author argues that Black Americans are to be distinguished from other categories of black people in the country: black Africans, West Indians, or Hispanics. While Black people are members of the black race, as are other groups of people, they are a distinct ethnic group of that race. This conceptual failure has hampered the ability of historians to define Black experience in America and to study it in the most accurate, authentic, and realistic manner possible. This confusing situation is aggravated further by the fact that many scholars tend to describe Black people in an arbitrary manner, as Africans, African Americans, Afro-Americans, black or Black, which is insufficient for precision. They sometimes downplay the historical evidence regarding African identity, and the identity of Blacks in America. Wright offers a new methodological basis for undertaking Black history: namely, the framework of historical sociology. He argues that this approach will produce a more useful history for Black people and others in America.

Customer Reviews:
Different from other texts.......2007-08-31
When learning geometric optics, one usually learns concepts and equations using ordinary algebra. In this text, linear algebra is used. It gives the reader another way to manipulate problems than typically used. Highly recommended!
Good book for non-medical background study.......2006-11-14
The book is well written in the sense for people who want to have fundamental knowledge on optics in the sense of vision and image from human eyes. It also provides abundant infromation on the basics that help people from either engineering or medical background.
Easy to read & understand!!!.......2002-01-28
Dr. Keating has done an excellent job of putting his lectures into words. There is no better way to learn optics than to attend lectures, but if you can't, the next best thing is this book. As one of Dr. Keating's students, I can say that he wrote this book for students, keeping in mind that most of us have no clue about optics. He provides tons of examples along with complete explanations. I don't know how he does it...but Dr. Keating has made optics fun for me, and all of my friends!!!!!!
A Real Page-Turner, First Rate!.......1999-09-21
The Best Damn Geometric Optics Book I've ever read. And the author is a hell of a nice guy!
Love,
Matt H. Gene F. Mike B.
