Arleta Pech: A Gifted Teacher.......2002-07-31

I admired Arleta's book for 18 months before buying it. The beautiful, top-quality illustrations in this book underline Arleta's inate sense of articulation, composition, depth of field and rich, pure colour. Using pure colour washes to build up rich colour that "glows", Arleta is known for her attention to detail.

The book is surpassed only in Arleta's ability to teach in person. Having recently attended a 5-day workshop under this extraordinarily-gifted teacher, I feel that I have grown greatly in my own artistic scope and, following her advice to limit my palette, she has provided me with a greater understanding of the "science" of colour.

A beautiful book and a wonderful value...you will treasure it!

I have had this book for over a year now. I am constantly going back to it for insperation. The book is a how to do book.. Arleta takes you through each step to creat many paintings with excelent results... her book is written in a style that is easy to read and follow. There are lots of photographs to help you understand what to do..I think that a beginner that has never painted a thing. could pick up this book and be painting beautifull paintings right away.. I recomend this book to anyone loving lace, flowers...and watercolour. Arleta shows you how to paint and have fun all at the same time..I loved her book so much, that I signed up for one of her 4 day classes in October 2000/ I am very excited about meeting this lady in person and being able to study under her... have fun painting... you can do it,with this book.....Jane

How to paint beautiful florals for any artistic level.......2000-06-08

Arleta Pech's book is one of the best books on painting lush florals I have ever seen. This book is so good I later bought one of her video tapes to actually watch her creating a floral in her beautiful style. However, as long as you have this book you don't need a video. The book has everything you need to start painting in this beautiful style.

The first chapter gives information on materials, paints and surfaces. It also discusses looking for inspiration, developing the composition, creating paintings with a theme, creating a center of interest, detail drawing & use of a projector along with correcting the distortions that projection methods introduce.

The next chapter gets to the nuts and bolts of how she achieves her unique look. She discusses color theory particularly as it relates to glazing with watercolor. There are step-by-step photos showing her graded glaze technique and building form with it as well as her paint and pull technique. She shows the difference these techniques produce compared to wet-in-wet and provides some practice exercises with petals an iris and a bow. She also shows use of an airbrush which she uses mainly just to touch up & soften the center of a flower and occasionally to soften a background further.

The book has many step-by-step demonstrations of full paintings using her 2 favorite techniques as well as demonstrations of painting interesting backgrounds. There are many smaller demonstrations of just an individual flower. Interestingly, outline drawings are provided so you can trace the flower and practice painting it. She also uses lines pointing to particular areas of the outline drawing to remind you of certain areas to pay attention to.

Even though this is mainly a book about floral painting she provides demonstrations of painting china and lace since these items are often also featured in her floral still-lifes. One of the chapters shows step-by-step demonstrations of full scale paintings and a list beside each finished painting of problems that can crop up and their solutions. The final chapter is a gallery.

I have practiced painting some of the mini-demonstrations provided in the book and have been delighted with the results. Anyone wanting to paint better florals will benefit from this book.

This book is filled with Arleta Pech's gorgeous paintings! She gives valuable demonstrations and tips on all aspects of painting flowers. You'll want to grab your brushes and begin!

Comprehensive source for the serious researcher, based on original documents. Hundreds of photos of textiles, pattern books, commerical records, etc. Information is arranged in a dictionary format. There is a slight difficulty in matching photos with definitions, but it's worth the trouble.

This book is less than seven inches tall and has comics that are in other books.

No Insight Involved: Dilbert.......1998-03-20

The premise of this obvious marketing ploy is that you are supposed to get familiar with the characters from the popular comic-stip Dilbert. There are very few cartoons in it, truth to tell so you would be much better off buying a treasury. This is not to say that it isn't fun to read, but just not worth the money when you can buy twenty times that many cartoons for only about $10.

A good book for a small laugh.......1998-03-16

While this book is funny and an easy read. Teh book unfortunatley uses a lot of the same cartoons that are used in Adams' previous books, thus making it repetative. The size of the book in demnsion is great, being that it does not take up a lot of room. The length is also great, it can be read and re-read over and over again in a short period of time. It provides adn excelent reference source for all of the "Dilbert" characters.

Useful yet pitiful.......1998-03-15

This book shows us all sides of every character. Dilbert, Dogbert, Catbert, Ratbert, Phil, Alice, Wally, The Pointy-Haired Boss, and so on, including Dilbert's Mother. For most of the character's page, you only get three cartoons (some have more) and some strips are is small type. This book is useful in identifying characters, but pitiful in the selection and organization of the strips.

Valenti's casebook helped me understand "Old Man and the Sea" by explaining the authors life and environment at the time of the books conception. With detailed research, maps and images I could better grasp what the author was writing about. To me this book made all the difference in the world in my understanding what I read and made Hemingway far less intemidating. This book doesn't try to cheat by telling you a "Cliff Notes" summary of the story, but is an actual accessory to better understanding the novel, written by an expert in the field.

Most excellent, however, "The Learn Program for Weight Management 2000" has now been released. (As has new casette tapes)

This book breaks weight management down to 16 easy to follow lessons. It takes a light approach to issues like dealing with family, and special occasions. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a long-term approach to weight loss.

it is good book for everyone interested in the history of Caucasus, in the history of the struggle of the Caucasian people (Avars, Chechens, Cherkess and so on) against Russia's intervention. By the way contrary to a common opinion in the West, Imam Shamil was not a Chechen he was an Avar.

good read indeed, but full of mistakes. .......2005-05-27

Have to say, it reads fast and pleasant. You will not regret getting this book if you decide to do so. I withheld two stars because book claims to be historical, while there are quite a few inaccuracies.
I respect the admiration author has for Caucasian mountaineers (being descendent of such it is especially pleasant), but she definitely overromanticizes her hero(s). Shamyl is great enough figure and Chechens are brave enough people to be in need of overglorification.
Book tells a lot of legends and passes them as facts. Some most naïve, even silly XIX c stereotypes are restated without questioning - i.e. Khevsurs being descendents of Crusaders who passed through Caucasus in their due time!!! This lame assumption is based on the fact of cross being important symbol among Khevsurs (who in fact are Georgian mountaineers, just like Svans (Suanetians) who Blanch "mistakes" for Muslim North Caucasians (in fact they are Christian). Khevsur cross is pre-Christian symbol (sufficient archeological evidence for anyone who cares to check).
Blanch also retells number of legends told by Alexander Dumas in his "Adventures in the Caucasus" (without referring to the source!) And names some of those legends (I remember two: Shete, child-tongue cutter; and a father who cut up his son's dead body into 70 pieces and sent to his relatives as a request for revenge...) as "Chechen stories", while Dumas tells them as Tushetian ones (another Georgian Christian tribe).
Either she is mistaken, or she purposefully mislocates the origin of characters in order to draw a portrait of Chechens the way she wants. It is OK to be mistaken and I hope it is just a mistake, because I really don't like when writer misleads the reader...
There is not much research done and there are very few books written about Caucasian history in any language. Despite what I said above, this one is probably the best among English books I have come across. So, I recommend it to everyone, especially if you are not a history buff, but a sucker for good romantic story about bravery and glory and freedom, etc. We may say, story is "based on true story". Enjoy it!

Shades of Arrakis.......2002-04-29

This book is not only a very pleasant read about the Russian conquest of the Caucasus, and thus good background for understanding the current problems there. It's also a source from which Frank Herbert drew heavily when writing his science fiction novel *Dune*. Such terms as chakobsa, kanly and kindjal are not unique to Blanch's book, but they certainly resonate with Herbert's fans.
Highly recommended and very readable.

Lion of Dhagestan.......2001-12-15

The reviews I've read so far fail to emphasize that this book, while it certainly covers much of the history of the Caucuses in the latter half of the 19th century, is in no small part a biography of Imam Shamyl, "The Lion of Dhagestan", and his role as the leader of what was referred to as "The Mureed Wars". Shamyl was a legendary, charismatic leader who, through the power of his Islamic faith, and with the added dimension of being son-in-law of one of the great Shaykhs of the Naqshbandi Sufi order (Jamaluddin Ghumuqi), united the various tribes and peoples of this region to fight off the great Russian Bear for nearly 25 years. It is an epic tale of heroism and tragedy on a personal and cultural level, and will grip the reader as they follow the exploits and the battles that are still to this day legendary in the Caucuses.
