Book Description

Bungalows of the early twentieth century were pleasantly small, well designed, and affordable. The same can be said of Pomegranate's Bungalow Basics books. Each book in the series spotlights a different aspect of bungalows, those charming and efficient homes that came to epitomize the Arts and Crafts style in American residences. Douglas Keister's photographs capture the results of meticulous restorations, while Paul Duchscherer's text provides concise information about bungalow design and history.

Titles in the series: Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Dining Rooms, Doors, Fireplaces, Kitchens, Living Rooms, and Porches.

I ordered the book to gain insight into renovating my 1920 cottage porch. A complete waste of money and time! If you are renovating look elsewhere for ideas and details.

3 out of 5 stars Size DOES Matter!.......2007-01-04

Although I have bought quite a few books authored by Paul Duchscherer and/or Douglas Keister, I was disappointed with the physical size of this book. It is only about 5 1/2" x 6 1/2" and much of the detail in the pictures is lost because of it. The print is also mini-sized and cannot be read without reading glasses for us "vintage" readers! (It IS, however, the perfect size for a Christmas stocking stuffer!)

I also had some problems with the constant referral in the first (and only) chapter in the front of the book to note the various 48 pictures throughout the book as the different type of porches were described. It was a constant flipping back and forth of pages to see Figures 15, 28 for this or Figures 4-5, 10, 13, 15-16, and 23 for that. The text was well-written but overall this book could have been so much better...

1 out of 5 stars This is a TINY book.......2005-02-09

The size (approx. 6x6") makes the photos miniscule. Forget
using them for ideas - without a microscope.

Tiny in substance at 70 pages as well.

Content/size in no way justifies the price.

Nice photos of the art but not enough technique shown and not enough variety in brushstrokes.

4 out of 5 stars An inspiring book.......2000-11-13

The author is a warm and intelligent painter who expresses her passion for painting. and inspired a sense of excitement and possibilities in me. The chapter on drawing is extremely helpful. Although the paintings shown are mainly traditional in composition, there is a filip of creativity in subject matter and composition that is moving forward. I believe I can transfer the lessons to painting that I attempt here in the cold and rawness of Canada, Europe being beyond my reach....

5 out of 5 stars A "generous" book.......2000-03-29

Generous with sumptuous photographs of her work; generous with sharing her techniques and colors and study sources; generous in giving me the feeling that I can paint stills as wonderful as hers. Thank you Joe Anna.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to still life........1998-04-20

This is an excellent book. Written the way she teaches a workshop. My first impression of her as a person was that she was an intelligent woman, this book is well thought out and a great help to anyone wishing to paint still life.

3 out of 5 stars Adult adoptee opinion.......2002-04-10

I am a 35 yr old adoptee and ordered this book for helpful insight into the adoptee/birthmother interactions.
I was caught by surprise when Katie revealed right away that she is a lesbian.
Unfortunately, this soured the book for me.
I wish this information would have been written in the editorial review!

3 out of 5 stars Easy Read; Important Read; Flawed Too.......2000-11-16

Good news: This book is a very easy and engaging read. The mom and daughter write extremely well and their reunion through letters, e-mails and visits is so good it is almost too good to be true. Yet they do shed light on dark side of even the best reunions ...As an adopted mom, who is open, so I thought to birth mothers more than most, I was bothered by the birth mom's seduction of her "daughter" which was obviously going to lead to problems for the relation with adopted mom. That was a subtext they did not addrss.. Also some of the psychological work each does struck me as a little rote. Another flaw: Their writing styles are too similar. Even if true, for the book's sake, they should have emphasized their differences. And not only in writing, but, now that I think about it: the whole point of this book was the display and joy of similarities=their love. I believe, as with their writing styles, that there were too many genetic connections celebrated to be true to life. I am not adopted and found none of the issues purely bound to that "primal wound." Then again, what do I know about a reunion? All in all: a good and VERY easy read by two very intelligent women who ARE much alike but, guessing here, atypical of most reunions, atypical of most adoptees, atypical of most birth moms. Nonetheless, yes, recommended.

5 out of 5 stars More than letters.......2000-11-15

As an adoptee whose circumstances are remarkably similiar to Katie's, I was blown away by this book. I am currently searching for my birth mother, so this account was fascinating. A lot of the emotions and fears are ones that I have experienced. This book is more than a collection of letters. It is a fascinating look inside the process that many still-searching adoptees should take the time to read. I will probably read it again as my own search continues.

              5 out of 5 stars A Year in Letters.......2000-01-29

I mostly read while I'm on the bus, and this book was a challenge in that regard. How does one get through a book that's so heartfelt and agonizingly honest, without making a sobbing jerk of oneself?

"Reunion" is a beautiful, true, 'real-time' story, told in an incredibly accessible style, about loss and redemption, and all the resentments in-between.

I highly recommend this book. As someone touched personally by the subject matter, I find myself hard-pressed to talk publicly about the details of "Reunion." At the same time, I can't deny the impact this book has had upon my life. If you have 'adoption issues' in any regard, please read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hit the nail on the head.......2000-01-18

As an adult adoptee reunited with my birthmother, I have read numerous books on adoption, searching and reunion and must say that I couldn't read this book fast enough. With every turn of a page I found myself saying "yes", these are the same feelings and emotions I have dealt with. While my reunion has been absolutely wonderful there still remains certain feelings of guilt, anger and questions that I want to ask but can't seem to get out of my mouth. While my birthmother and myself have a very open relationship sometimes feelings are better expressed with letters such Ellen and Katie do in this book. I plan on writing my birthmother a letter in hopes that she will respond with answers to my questions and that we can continue to enjoy our loving and joyous relationshiop. Thank you.

                Book Description

Two of Jane Austen's brother served in Nelson's navy and later became admirals. Francis Austen, on board the Canopus, narrowly missed the battle of Trafalgar; Charles Austen in Endymion captured numerous small prizes. It is not surprising that that the Austen family, including Jane, took a deep personal interest in naval affairs. Apart from the church, the navy was the profession which she knew and admired most. Her novels reflected this: Mansfield Park includes a portrait of life in Portsmouth, the estimable midshipman William Price and the less attractive Admiral Crawford; Persuasion presents her most extended account of naval officers and attitudes, from the redoubtable Admiral Croft to Captain Wentworth himself. Jane Austen and the Navy demonstrates clearly the importance of the navy both in Jane Austen's life and her novels."She was convinced of sailors having more worth and warmth than any other set of men in England; that they only knew how to live, and they only deserved to be respected and loved!"--Jane Austen, Persuasion

                Book Description

From tar-ladles and snuff-boxes to sailmaker's fids and carronades: a gorgeous photographic essay on Jack Aubrey's world.

The extraordinary photography in this book was inspired by the author's reading of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. In small museums along the English coast, and in private collections, McGuane has recorded artifacts recovered from shipwrecks and preserved by modern conservation techniques. Taken together, these unique treasures provide a window onto the everyday life of sailors and officers in the Royal Navy of the Napoleonic era.

Thanks to advances in marine archaeology, it is often possible to establish the exact identity of a wrecked warship, along with the date and circumstances of its sinking. We are thus provided with a moment frozen in time: tools, clothing, utensils, weapons, and fragments of the ship itself startlingly intact.

Also photographed here is Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, proudly preserved at Portsmouth. Victory survived the great fleet action at Trafalgar, as Nelson himself did not, and is still a commissioned ship in the Royal Navy. 280 color illustrations and photographs.

                1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2006-02-25

It lacked serious information and the photos were not that informative. I have been an Amazon customer for years, this is the only book I've returned.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU James McGuane!! .......2005-02-06

You've done history great service and truly inspired me. Publishers stamp out millions of cheaply rendered books and -- while most have "some redeeming features" -- only one in one-thousand is this inspired.

The Queen should track you down and knight you!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Aubrey or Hornblower fans.......2003-07-31

The main attraction of the book is the photography. Large, well-reproduced photos of important or interesting naval items. Most are dynamic and excellent shots, though a few have depth-of-field problems--Lengthy objects sometimes have the close or far end slightly out of focus.

The accompanying text for each item is brief, basically a lengthy caption. In some cases, I wanted more detail. Some of the petty details that are included are very interesting, though. My favorite was the reaction of dockworkers in England to the Navy effort to build ships of long-lasting teak in the Far East. When their jobs were threatened by foreign competition, the English shipwrights began spreading rumors of how teak splinters were poisonous!

The selection of subjects is EXCELLENT, with almost all of them in wonderful shape. The collections of a number of museums were used, as well as the ship HMS VICTORY at Portsmouth. Oddly, I don't remember any items from the outstanding naval museum at Portsmouth, however.

Highly recommended for the illustrations, though if you really want to know details of how items of rigging and such were used, you will want to supplement this book with another that has better text (and probably has greatly inferior illustrations). The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea would be a good choice.

                5 out of 5 stars A Voyage of Discovery.......2002-12-25

Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey and Maturin novels are unsurpassed for their historical accuracy, their swashbuckling plots, and for piquing the desire of non-sailors (like me) to learn more about the nautical technology of the Napoleonic era. HEART OF OAK answers the need of the nautically-challenged for an illustrated glossary of this technology. But even better, it offers both the non-sailor and sailor alike an "insider's view" of life on board a typical British warship of the time. Through its brilliant photographs of common everyday items, it answers the small but nagging questions raised by O'Brien's descriptions of shipboard life, such as what did the grog cup of a common sailor look like, how big is a holystone, and what's a deadeye and how does it work? HEART OF OAK is a great improvement over the usual dry nautical encyclopedias that merely catalog the naval equipment of the time. Like the Aubrey and Maturin novels, it pumps blood into the sinews of history. Handsomely designed, elegantly and sparely written, McGuane has given us a treasure trove of images and visceral insights that enhances O'Brien's works, but also stands solidly on its own as a poetic pictorial history of Nelson's navy.

                5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful gift!!!.......2002-12-12

I'm so glad I found this fabulous book for my husband who is a HUGE Patrick O'Brien fan. Not knowing much about naval history myself, I found myself immersed for an hour or so in this great, visual history book. The photographs are wonderful - the subject matter is by turns exciting, majestically beautiful, and sometimes a bit gruesome! - the writing is concise and leaves you wanting to learn more. I'm now inspired to hit the O'Brien books myself! A perfect gift for history buffs.

                  Book Description

Drawing on many contemporary sources and eyewitness accounts, this book examines the lives of the ordinary sailors of the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815), detailing their attitudes, duties, comforts, hardships, vices and virtues. The popular image of the British sailor of this time is of a press-ganged wretch living off weevil-infested food, motivated only by prize money and facing constant hazards aboard a floating hell, where discipline was maintained by the lash. The extent to which this enduring image accords with reality is revealed here.

                                  Book Description

This book provides a concise yet thorough overview of the interactions between the world's dominant country and the world's most developed institution. The book examines the major events in the history of US-EU relations, and suggests that changes in the international political economy play a key role in shaping this relationship: the US and the EU are in a constant state of competition and cooperation that varies by issue and policy area.

The United States and the European Union is well-suited for researchers interested in Europe's external relations, US foreign policy, political economy and contemporary global issues.

                                  Book Description

In a sign-solvable linear system, the signs of the coefficients determine the signs of some entries in the solution. This type of system is part of a larger study that helps researchers understand if properties of a matrix can be determined from combinatorial arrangements of its elements. In this book, the authors present the diffuse body of literature on sign-solvability as a coherent whole for the first time, giving many new results and proofs and establishing many new connections. Brualdi and Shader describe and comment on algorithms implicit in many of the proofs and their complexity. The book is self-contained, assuming familiarity only with elementary linear algebra and graph theory. Intended primarily for researchers in combinatorics and linear algebra, it should also be of interest to computer scientists, economists, physicists, chemists, and engineers.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Very abstract.......2003-12-19

I'm not really a mathematician at heart. I use math and enjoy using it, but never really learned to love it for its own sake. In other words, this book wasn't written for me.

I work with combinatoric problems a fair bit, and hoped that sign-solvable systems (SSS) would be directly applicable to some of my work. I also look at questions where sloppy data prevent exact solutions - if a technique promises at least partial answers when precise answers aren't available, it has my interest. The SSS premise is that, in some cases, I can tell whether parts of my answer are positive, negative, or zero, knowing only whether the inputs were positive, negative, or zero. The simplified character of the questions and answers could possibly work well in special computing environments that I use. I really wanted to like this book and its content.

I just wasn't able to connect these abstractions to my real world, though. The focus of this book is on the abstract structures behind SSS, and on formal proofs about specific features of special cases.

This book does have a practical side. It specifies a number of algorithms for handling sign-solvable systems of various sorts. It would take a lot of effort to reduce these algorithms to practice, but the information is all there. As books of pure advanced math go, this one seems relatively clear and approachable.

Perhaps a more astute reader than me can connect SSS to problems of practical interest. Perhaps, some day, I'll take the time to work through this book in detail. These days, though, I can't spend a lot of time away from the problems I need to solve. Building up a working knowledge of SSS from this book would take intense effort. I really have to put my effort elsewhere.
