Customer Reviews:
the cover is misleading.......2007-02-06
I was expecting a more modern approach to home plans. what the book was full of was traditional architecture. The most compelling plan is on the front cover. Most of it is filled with mcmansionesque type plans. don't bother.
Customer Reviews:
My very own handweaver's bible........2006-10-06
I purchased this great book in 1974 and it became my most used learning guide and technical reference around the studio.
It runs for 480 pages with 400 diagrams, 170 photographs (4 in color) and has a Bibliography, a Suppliers List and a very usefull Index.
At the beginning I carefully followed the instructions to the letter. Then I rapidely took off on the creative warp and weft ways with my own invented textures, colors and design.
Collingwood covers a lot of different techniques and many cultural influences. You can really be design inventive if you use the book to cross-reference your free-thinking ideas between the 14 chapters.
This book is a really good creative investment and a must have item in your weaver's library.
Th Techniques of Rug Weaving.......2005-01-31
A classic rug weaving book, a must for any serious weaver, though somewhat complex, the information is unique, the creative possibilities are fully explored.
Weaving rugs.......2002-11-09
This is a thorough book, but difficult to understand for beginners. It is dry and complicated to get through and I would only recommend it as a reference, not necessarily a working book. There are others much easier to use for general rug weaving instruction.
The classic user friendly "how to" book of rug weaving........1997-07-27
Any hand weaver who is serious about weaving more than one rug needs this book in their library. It is easy to follow and it covers a comprehensive range of techniques. The diagrams are clear and the text is easy to follow. It is possible to skim and to leap across whole chapters to follow your interest. If it has one drawback it is that most of the photographs of Collingwood's own work are in black and white. If you have the inclination towards rugs and the inspiration, Collingwood will support you to avoid the pitfalls and plan the fulfillment of your creative spirit

waytogo!.......2005-10-09
so please to receive this classic used book in new condition...and so reasonably and quickly..
Excellent illos explain unusual techniques & designs.......1999-06-20
Twenty-two years after his famous "Techniqes of Rug Weaving", Collingwood produced a worthy sequel in this 1990 book, full of new ideas. Close-up photos of small samples, large detailed diagrams, and clearly-written text convey Collingwood's enthusiasm for his craft and lead the weaver through the methods needed to achieve some truly stunning effects, useful not just for rug weavers but for anyone interested in unusual handweaving methods. (Another book to seek is "Small Webs", a Danish (?) book for users of small table looms who want to create things no machine could produce.) The author's suggestions for altering and strengthening a loom struck me as sensible, especially since the loom I use was handmade by a musician friend from parts that were almost entirely "found objects" -- it includes bean poles and a post from a fallen street sign.
Large-format hc with color dust jacket, 160pp.
Book Description
A combination how-to book for weaving rugs with fabric remnants, and a gallery of gorgeous contemporary rugs by some of today’s best designers. This book brings rag rugs out of old country cabins and places them beside the best of contemporary crafts and décor. A delight for weavers and nonweavers alike.
Customer Reviews:
A must for rug rug weavers, full of new ideas!.......1999-04-05
I think this book is great. She shows lots of great color photos of rag rugs, and then in the back has lots of "projects" which show the completed rug and have very good detailed instructions, like warp calculations, and tie-up and drafts, all you need to know to make the rug, just like it's pictured. But all the photos give ideas on how to customize the rug to be exactly what you want. Also the author gives a good introductory history of rag rugs chapter, and tells all about how great, beautiful, and functional rag rugs are. I also can't say enough good things about this book. The best rag rug weaving book I've ever seen.
Pure inspiartion.......1998-08-15
This is a book of pure inspiartion and aspiration. I loved the color images and the new and traditional options available to the handweaver. I can't say enough good things about this.

Complete Guide to Beauty & Glamor Photography
ASIN: 0879857749 |
Book Description
What does it take to get a great nude photograph--to choose the right model, make her feel comfortable, style her to best effect, and place her in eye-catching compositions? A top photographer, a former model herself, reveals all the details of what goes on in her studio and how she plans and carries out a shoot. Using an array of nude photographs and a personal, chatty style, Brown explains how she selects and directs her models, emphasizing that while physical imperfections can be disguised (she'll tell you how) nothing hides a lack of personality--and that makes for a dead photo. Find out what to do when faced with someone inexperienced, nervous about going nude, or chosen by a client who doesn't share your taste. Take advantage of expert and very practical advice on where to find staff, what to do when things are going wrong and you must get the shot, and how to achieve a subtle eroticism with drapery or through a model's glance. Plus: Brown's favorite model gives her perspective, too!

Don't bother.......2002-07-25
This book is a complete waste of time and money for anyone looking for information or images on glamour photography. Very little substance of use. I own approximately 15 books in the area of glamour photography and have read and studied them all. I use them to develop my technical abiliy and creative vision. The 3 best buys I've found for content are "Successful Glamour Photography" by John Kelly, "Part-Time Glamour Photography Full-Time Income" by Joe Farace and "Lighting For Glamour Photography" by David Kimber. These 3 books cover most aspects of glamour photography from the technical to finding models and selling your photographs. Hope this helps those of you looking for more detailed information on the subject of glamour photography.
selling soap.......2002-01-14
You wont find any great secrets to photographing the nude in this book. The author seems more concerned on ways of covering the nude than photographing it. Photographic examples are glib and fomulatic looking. Photographs are composed and lighted for soap and skin care product ads that would be aimed at the female consummer and won't offend granma.

Feeling let down.......2001-04-13
A number of years ago I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy Brown's book on Advertising Photography and so I ordered her book on Nude Photography sight unseen. I was very disappointed. This book gives very few details on what is a very complicated subject and also manages to give too much information on some very obvious points. I was also disappointed with the photographs. A lot of them were the same in pose and lighting and, although I do understand that the author is doing a series of non-nude photographs with capes, those photos do not belong in this book. The lighting diagrams give very little information and the size of those diagrams and the size of the some of the print take up an inordinate amount of the pages. This book is a very quick read with little information. Had this been an article in a photography magazine I would not be complaining so loudly. For the price of this book however, I feel that the author has let us down.
A Good Start.......2001-03-10
I first noticed this book at a photo store. After a few minutes browsing I thought it looked interesting. However after buying it I found there was little more to it than what I had picked up in a quick browse. There are some interesting perspectives on working with models. There are also a few technical hints, and some advice on breaking in the business. But I thought none of the topics was covered in sufficient depth to be useful. It's a good start to a book that needs to either focus topics or expand greatly to be useful.

Contrast with Miles.......2005-10-21
Whew! What a race. Compared to "Miles Gone By" this one is busy. Twenty years sure makes a difference.
Extraordinary and inspiring.......2005-03-03
Whether one agrees or disagrees with his politics, it is impossible to deny that WFB lives deep and sucks out all the marrow of life with an energy and drive that few can match. In Overdrive, we glance at his world - just a week - and his seemingly effortless juggling of enough activities to fill at least a half dozen lives: novelist, speaker/lecturer, magazine editor, non-fiction writer, concert harpsichordist, philanthropist, sea-faring sailor/adventurer, black belt grammarian, and bon vivant. Since he has yet to write a book on uber time management for the carpe diem crowd, those of us who would emulate his astonishing ability to fill life with extraordinary accomplishments and experiences must settle for this enjoyable book.
Interesting view into a life........2004-11-28
William F. Buckley instead of providing overview of his life, instead provides a snapshot. The book covers the thoughts and actions of the author for a period of just over a week.

A great book.......2000-03-31
This a great book for those who like real adventures. It makes you feel like you are taking part of an archeological expedition. The only defect that I found is that it is a little long for its content.
Book Description
If government tells dependent people how to live today, will we have a more self-reliant society tomorrow? That's the critical question as government increasingly seeks to supervise the lives of poor citizens who are dependent on it, often in return for supporting them. This trend is most visible in welfare policy, where "welfare reform" largely means attempts to require adults receiving assistance to work or stay in school in return for aid. However, it can also be seen in policy toward the homeless, where shelters increasingly set rules for their residents; in education, where states have instituted tougher standards for children; and in drug programs that test addicts for compliance. The drift in antipoverty policy is toward paternalism--the close supervision of the dependent.
Paternalism has been a major trend in social policy for the past decade, and it has support from the public. But it has received little attention from researchers and policy analysts--until now. The New Paternalism opens up a serious discussion of supervisory methods in antipoverty policy. The book assembles noted policy experts to examine whether programs that set standards for their clients and supervise them closely are better able to help them than traditional programs that leave clients free to live as they please.
Separate chapters discuss programs to promote work in welfare, prevent teen pregnancy, improve fathers' payment of child support, shelter homeless men in New York City, deter drug addiction, and improve the education of the disadvantaged. Cross-cutting chapters address the management of paternalism, the psychological needs of poor adults, and the tension between paternalism and American politics.
The authors consider both sides of the debate over this controversial issue. Several chapters address the sensitive question of whether government or private organizations are best able to implement supervisory programs. The conclusions are optimistic but cautious. Most of the authors believe that paternalism can make an important contribution to overcoming poverty. But paternalism is not a panacea, and it makes severe demands on the capacities of government. Supervisory programs are difficult to justify politically and to implement well.

Book Description
With his investigation of slavery on the Northwest Coast of North America, Leland Donald makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the aboriginal cultures of this area. He shows that Northwest Coast servitude, relatively neglected by researchers in the past, fits an appropriate cross-cultural definition of slavery. Arguing that slaves and slavery were central to these hunting-fishing-gathering societies, he points out how important slaves were to the Northwest Coast economies for their labor and for their value as major items of exchange. Slavery also played a major role in more famous and frequently analyzed Northwest Coast cultural forms such as the potlatch and the spectacular art style and ritual systems of elite groups.
The book includes detailed chapters on who owned slaves and the relations between masters and slaves; how slaves were procured; transactions in slaves; the nature, use, and value of slave labor; and the role of slaves in rituals. In addition to analyzing all the available data, ethnographic and historic, on slavery in traditional Northwest Coast cultures, Donald compares the status of Northwest Coast slaves with that of war captives in other parts of traditional Native North America.

Book Description
The organisational dimension of scientific performance is concerned with the influence the organisation may have on the performance and effectiveness of research scientists.
This book deals with the role of the organisation in scientific research. It examines organisational influences such as leadership, group dynamics, resources and technology, and their importance in relation to scientific performance. It also deals with issues of scientific research policy, the measurement of scientific productivity, and the wider social and personal influences affecting scientific performance.
Uniquely, it links scientific performance with organisational factors. It brings together in one book a number of multi-disciplinary approaches and factors which influence scientific effectiveness, contributed by key researchers and writers in the area who have not hitherto worked or published together. Its focus is specifically on the organisation of scientific research and the importance of the research environment to scientific performance.
