Inspiring.......2007-01-21
The subtitle of this book is a bit of a misnomer. There are step-by-step projects detailed in the book. However, few of these items appear in the rooms featured and there are very few sewing projects. Those looking for instructions should be aware this book is not helpful in that regard. However, for those with some sewing knowledge there are literally hundreds of potential projects - from curtains to pillows and slipcovers. Fans of the "cottage" look will also appreciate the dozens and dozens of stunning rooms including fabrics, furniture and accessory layouts and color combinations. One can walk away with countless ideas from this book; my copy has nearly half of its pages tagged with projects I plan to attempt. I would highly recommend it for such purposes.

a good book to start with.......2005-09-11
I bought this book after we started pastels in my art class. Not liking the pastels very much at first I decided to do a little work on my own. This book was invaluable! This is such a great book to start off with. Not only does it teach you about the medium itself, it also goes into color theory and the reasons for choosing certain colored papers to convey the feeling of the painting. Along the way I learned a great deal, but most importantly was not that I couldn't use the pastels, it was the pastels I was using were not very good, hence my frustration with them. I went out and bought some good pastels and worked my way through this book. I don't regret it. This book really inspired me to do more. I even took it to class and we did one of the lessons! This book is well worth more than the price.

Fabulous book for interested beginner!.......2005-07-09
I have made here and there some trials to get into pastel but due to the kind of instruction books that I used my results were less than thrilling. So I started wondering whether maybe I have just zero talent (I am only talking about 'fun amateur talent') to use this medium - until I bought this book. Suddenly my results turn out to be beautiful thanks to this excellent instructional book which really leads you step by step to the next level. Even the simple exercises turn out as fun little pieces worthwhile keeping. Jackie Simmonds somehow manages to come up with an explanation for every mistake you can make and how to fix it - in my opinion she really knows how to teach others and her style to put it into writing is very pleasant - even just reading the book will be half the fun. Also broad spectrum of examples is covered.
In my opinion more than worthwhile the money I paid for it and I will buy more books from Jackie Simmons. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do!
Very good for beginners.......2005-02-02
As a painter, familiar with acrylics and oils, I found some frustration when I tried pastels. I mean, how hard can it be, they're just fancy crayons, right? Wrong. Lots of little differences in application techniques and blendings and materials etc. This book walks you thru all the basics and gives you some practice at the fundamentals. You will probably need more instruction later but this will get you started and help you overcome the early frustrations. Only reason I didn't give it more stars... it is a little short! But good value for the bucks.
GREAT BOOK FOR BEGINNERS!!.......2003-07-13
I am an absolute beginner and have bought many pastel books and this is one of the 2 best i have.It assumes you know nothing, which for me, was true.It begins with basic marks and techniques and progresses into making pictures. I gained much confidence by going through this well organized book. If you are an absolute beginner, buy it!!!

A sleeper!.......2006-06-27
I bought this book after reading a blog post about it. Many of my recent reads have been of the travelogue variety and I thought that this would be a nice addition. I was wrong. Cannon has certainly traveled to a few wonderful places and has been in an interesting adventure or two, but it's the lack of detail at critical moments that make this a disappointing read. He waxes for pages about an accident of some sort and then glosses over his recovery time spent in the Virgin Islands drinking rum. Painful! I've given First Arc 2 stars only because I appreciate his wanderlust, NOT because he can turn a tale. A writing class would be money well spent.

At last, an Oriental materia medica in English!.......2001-04-03
I am most enthusiastic about Robert Rister's new book, "Japanese Herbal Medicine: The Healing Art of Kampo". While I am not a practicioner of Kampo (I come from a TCM/Western Herbal background) and cannot judge his portrayal of that system, Rister has written an excellent book for those trying to bridge their understanding of Asian and western herbal databases. My favorite part is the materia medica of 157 herbs and medicinal substances, organized by English common name, with Japanese names in parentheses and an appendix with Chinese, Korean, pharmaceutical and botanical Latin names and additional identification and dosage data.
A common problem with American students of Oriental herbal medicine is that they often are unaware that the substances they use are the same as western herbs they may understand- for instancea common form of Wu jia pi (Acanthopanacis) is Siberian ginseng or that modern Mang xiao (Mirabilitum) is Epsom salts. This book allows one to do that.
Up to date research on the herbs is presented in clear English, combining new knowledge with traditional uses. Extensive references are in an appendix. I spent several hours cross referencing this book with Bensky's Materia Medica and added as much from one book as to the other. The Kampo book tends not to include animal products used in Chinese medicine, as well as herbs used primarily in external application or against parasites, which accounts for its smaller database. But it includes the most important herbs used in Chinese and Japanese medicine.
The book is not organized by Chinese medicinal categories, although functions and indications are described in the text. It does not have a list of tastes, temperatures and channels, but parts of the body affected and organoleptic qualities are included in the text. One annoyance is the lack of a separate multilingual medicinal substance index, but the general index includes herbs by Japanese and English names. Occasionally I had to look up an herb in Bensky, check its Japanese name and refer to the index.
One major criticism is that I was not always certain that the research referred to the botanical species used most prevalently in Japanese (and Chinese) medicine (although I admit that I haven't yet spent time digging through the references). And one listing might be given for several parts of a species- like Lotus root, leaf, seed-receptacle, stamen, seed and sprout with the text addressing the various strengths in sketchy detail. Like most other Oriental materia medicas it lacks information on endangered species, cruelty (though few animal products are included) or modern substitutes like Serrulata sheng ma/black cohosh or Typhonium ban xia/pinellia.
There are sections on formulas, diseases organized by western name with differential diagnosis within the disease discussions, sources of Kampo goods and services and 65 pages of references.
An excellent adjunct materia medica for students of Oriental Medicine.

The best book on Oriental medicine I've ever read. Carefully researched, extensively referenced, comprehensive, but written in an easy-to-read style. Excellent resource for herbal medicine!

Nor does Friedman neglect to acknowledge the role played by politics, including the ethnic politics of Pakistan. Finally, the author's careful examination of the new concepts of warfare as applied to the Afghan war provides valuable lessons to those concerned about future conflicts.

A Compelling Military Study!.......2004-03-22
Author, Norman Friedman has done an excellent job of telling us about the ways in which our stategy and tactics have been drastically altered to meet new circumstances and conditions. In particular, I was drawn to his ideas concerning a "Pan-Moslem Empire" as envisaged by the leader of the Islamic terrorists. Military historians,in general,feel most at ease in discussing combat conditions, strategical and tactical planning, logistics etc. Mr. Friedman has ventured forward in discussing the motivations of the Islamic terrorists and religious zealots and thus giving us a bit of a macro-picture of the entire Middle East scene. As a Middle East Specialist, I can appreciate this aspect of his book, Terrorism, Afghanistan, and America's New Way of War. My book, JIHAD: The Mahdi Rebellion in the Sudan(2003) goes a step further by showing that Jihad is not a new phenomenon. The same forces of Jihad and Radicalism existed in the Sudan a century ago. In fact, "history is repeating itself throughout the Middle East." Mr. Friedman's book: Terrorism, Afghanistan, and America's New Way of War is an excellent military study within the larger context of Middle East history. First Rate!!! Murray S. Disappointing and simplified.......2003-12-30
Dr. Norman Friedman is perhaps known in military circles as an authoritive writer. This book tarnishes that reputation.
Terrorism, Afghanistan, and America's New Way of War is presented as a sweeping description of America's Global War On Terrorism that take economic, political, social, and military factors into account. Surprisingly enough Dr. Friedman simplifies the politics and social issues of the Middle East and Afghanistan to the point that it becomes inaccurate. Furthermore, Friedman makes a lot of assumptions and statements about the thinking of Osama bin Laden and other terrorists that he simply cannot prove to be true. That smells of bad journalism, rather than good scholarly work.
However, Dr. Friedman's chapter on the actual combat in Afghanistan is quite good. This saves the book from receiving 1 star rather than 2. If one wishes a somewhat detailed account of the blows and counterblows of Operation Enduring Freedom this book still might be worth it.
Finally, the book is filled with inconsistencies when it comes to the use of abbreviations and name of platforms and units. The book also contains mispelled words, and sometimes words have simply been left out. It seems that little real editing was performed by the Naval Institute before the book when to the press.
All in all, a very disappointing read.
Clarity and Insight.......2003-09-05
This book does an exceptional job of identifying and tying together several different strands of the war on terrorism: a) the ongoing evolution in American military thought and strategy in the direction of "netwar," which was underway before September 11; b) bin Laden's development of a millenialist Islamic fantasy combined with improvements in terrorist tradecraft, aided considerably by the advent of commonly available internet technology and encryption techniques; and c) the rapid implementation of extremely lethal and effective new tactics in the crucible of Afghanistan, which provided the template for the subsequent erasure of Saddam's power structure in Iraq. He makes a compelling case for the continued importance of substantial naval and naval air power in fighting terrorism and intimidating regimes that might otherwise be inclined to facilitate terrorists.
Friedman provides an understandable and complete narrative of events between September 11 and the start of the Iraq war (the book went to press just as the Iraq war was beginning, and the author made a number of uncannily accurate predictions of how that war would proceed.)
Friedman's account is particularly good in explaining the importance of a secure base to a network of compartmentalized terror cells, and how the destruction of that base will allow traditional methods of counter-terrorism and police work to tackle what is left. All in all, the book is a single source that gives the relatively informed but somewhat confused a much surer sense of the situation in the world today.
little new here.......2003-08-27
I suspect most who are interested in foreign/military affairs will find little new in this book. Except for specific information about certain weapon systems and associated terminology, most of the information here would already be known to readers who follow events like the Afghan war. One exception for me was to learn why our Afghan 'allies' so often seemed to let us down. Friedman points out that it was a coalition, not an alliance, whose partners had different viewpoints and goals. In a society whose three main ethics are honor, revenge, and hospitality it makes more sense to give a defeated enemy mercy and change sides when necessary. Otherwise, you invite unnecessary vengeance. There is little analysis here, mainly just a chronological recitation of events. For those who didn't already know, there is a good summation of the history radical Islam, Osama, et al. This material is better covered elsewhere.
