Book Description
The greatest humanitarian challenge we face today is that of providing shelter. Currently one in seven people lives in a slum or refugee camp, and more than 3,000,000,000 people--nearly half the world's population--do not have access to clean water or adequate sanitation. The physical design of our homes, neighborhoods and communities shapes every aspect of our lives. Yet too often architects are desperately needed in the places where they can least be afforded.Edited by Architecture for Humanity and now on its third printing, Design Like You Give a Damn is a compendium of innovative projects from around the world that demonstrate the power of design to improve lives. The first book to bring the best of humanitarian architecture and design to the printed page, Design Like You Give a Damn offers a history of the movement toward socially conscious design, and showcases more than 80 contemporary solutions to such urgent needs as basic shelter, healthcare, education and access to clean water, energy and sanitation.Design Like You Give a Damn is an indispensable resource for designers and humanitarian organizations charged with rebuilding after disaster and engaged in the search for sustainable development. It is also a call to action to anyone committed to building a better world.

Socially Conscious Sustainable Design.......2007-08-09
I found the book very inspiring and informative. The book is basically a catalogue of several types and scales of architectural humanitarianism. I am a student of architecture and this book and "Cradle to Cradle" have really inspired and driven me to explore these topics of sustainability and humanitarianism in the field of architecture further. If you are new to how architecture can help in humanitarian ways, as I am, then this book would be a fine introduction.
Great for a Designers Library.......2007-05-26
This book is a great addition to any designers library, skimming over a few different projects that are displayed after reading the first few chapters to get the background story is best. There are many projects that can help get over designers block when you need a break at 4 oclock in the morning.
Excellent book........2007-02-13
This book is a great read that is more fun than fiction with really interesting material about some inspirational projects.
Conditional review.......2007-01-10
I feel this book is what many designers, who have a special sensibility for the urgent problem of global housing, have been waiting for. I'm eager to see a second, third and many more editions. Congratulations to the editors.
inspiring & challenging.......2007-01-09
a very important collection of different archtitecture and design projects that are not about glam and luxury
(quite the opposite actually), all extremely relevant in this unsteady world that we live in.

Book Description
The female nude has been one of the most enduring themes in art. Curve surveys how artists over the course of the last ten years have been sculpting, photographing, and painting the female form. A wide range of work and styles is represented: from the work of John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage, whose inspiration ranges from Old Master painting to Penthouse magazine, respectively, to the sensual nudes of Jock Sturges's photographs to the brazen women who populate fine arts, photography, and fashion work. The sheer variety of the art presented will speak to a wide and diverse audience.

Excellent Overview of Figurative Art Today.......2006-01-04
I love reviews that damn a book because it was not what they expected it to be when it was purchased based on the title. That may work fine when you are purchasing the writings of a particular author and are disapointed with the book compared to his past writing. Compared to his past writing. Compared to... you get the point. If you are going to write a review about an art book, review the book, spare us your disapointed expectations. Like it or not, modern art is here to stay. Much of it is not to my likeing, but if you intend to be involved in the market, you better understand it. This book provides an outstanding overview of what is considered good figurative art in todays world. Some of it is outstanding, and some of it will pass like the wind. All of it needs to be looked at and questioned, "Why is this art?" If your interest is to participate in this market, get this book. If your looking for pretty books to teach you how to draw, move on.
Many visions.......2005-02-27
The editors have done a remarkable job of collectin many of the ways that current artists present the female figure. The first few pages of introduction set the mood. Each two-page spread presents two of the images shown later in the book. They're split down the middle, placed opposite each other along the crease between pages, and formed into a startling new whole. The mismatched parts make it very clear that there is no one "female figure", that it's a range filled with wonderful variety.
Some of these images, like Aida's, remind me that there are views I am very glad not to share. Others, like Parrish and Edmeir, can be read as simple celebrations of the literal form, though Edmeir complicates his statuary by choice of model. Patricia Cronin, among others, brings female sexuality to the front. Still others, including Mueck and Mann, examine biological facts of the female sex that have nothing to do with eroticism. Many artists, including Cindy Sherman, read the figure as a politicized battlefield. It's not necessary to share or even like every view shown here, but I find it very useful to see how many kinds of view there are.
Don't expect a standardized view of a standardized figure in this book. Do expect variety, complexity, and presentations where simple beauty is only a means to an end or is missing completely. This is not for everyone, but the receptive mind will be well rewarded.

Had to get another opinion........2005-01-14
This book is horrible for any artists looking for a visual reference of the female figure. It's a twisted interpretation of what some modern artists believe to be the "new" female figure -- a collection of abstract art that seems to degrade more than flatter the female body.
Great Book of art and photography.......2004-04-04
I ordered this book and absolutely love it! It has really great artwork with a wide range of artists represented. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in figurative art, especially of women.

A handy guide for the photographer on the go.......2005-07-22
This is a very handy guide to have for the SLR user. While it doesn't have anything that the pros don't already know, it's a big help to the amateur enthusiast just learning the joys of 35mm photography. All the basics (loading film, lenses, aperture, flash, etc.) are covered nicely and the photo examples in the book are great. They're small, but this is a pocket guide after all. I agree with one reviewer who said that the book should be updated. Despite that, you can't really go wrong having this book in the camera bag to use as a quick reference when shooting in the field. It's a solid little guide that would go together nicely with one of Kodak's bigger guides.
An Indispensable Pocket Reference.......2003-04-12
This little book tucks right into my camera bag, so it's easy to take along on photo outings. If you're at all serious about learning how to take better 35mm photos, you need to have this little book on hand for when you have those burning questions about light conditions, aperature/shutter speed combinations, etc. This isn't a book that is necessarily a stand-alone guide. Think of it as a quick reference to the bigger version. While this little book is a decent collection of quick tips for the field, if you're really serious about learning 35mm photography, get bigger Kodak guide as well.
When good, if easy... better........2002-09-27
This is a great easy to follow guide for picture taking, and correct use of equipment. Also very helpfull for litlle technical tips and composition remarks whenever you mostly need them. This handy manual, is perfect for carring in a camera case or in your car. However, its excelent for a beginner, for a more experienced photographers might seem too simple; but still good enough as a practical remminder.
Good but needs an update.......2002-03-19
This small book packs a lot of useful information. It's size makes it possible to carry it in your pocket or bag. It covers the most essential points of photography. Great for starters! My only criticism: it needs an update. Modern SLR's are not covered and the illustrations make you feel like you've picked up a second hand book from the 80's. Hopefully Kodak will make a new and updated edition.
Great travel photography guide.......2000-09-20
The book is an excellent guide to take with you on a trip. It is lightweight, compact, and summarizes ideas needed for good pictures. I have the Nikon and National Geographic guides and about ten other photography books. All are are too heavy to take on an overseas trip.

Could have been better.......2004-10-31
The KODAK Pocket Guide to Point-and-Shoot Photography is a very basic book that covers some basic techniques for making photographs with a compact camera. It tells you when to use flash and when not to, it tells something about framing subjects etc. This is all basic and useable information for anyone who for example wonders why all of his nighttime flash-photos always come out with a pitch black background. What this book does not cover is some very essential information about the working of a compact camera. In other words, it does not tell you that the metering system of any (compact) camera 'sees' everything as a middle gray tone. To get a correct is exposure it is essential that one knows this, especially with a compact camera that does not have an manual override function like an SLR camera, this book does not mention this at all even though it is so essential to get a correct exposed photo. That's why i give this only book four stars instead of five.
Book will not help you use your point and shoot camera.......2001-05-26
I bought this book hoping that it would serve as a supplement for the ridiculously small instruction pamphlet that accompanied my highly rated Samsung Evoca 140S point and shoot camera. Although point and shoot cameras are by their name supposed to make taking pictures easy, the Samsung instructions are written for people who are familar with more difficult cameras and just want an easier and smaller camera.
If you are looking for an extended instruction pamphlet describing the use of features generally found in point and shoot cameras this book is not for you. The few useful ideas it contains concern picture taking in general and have nothing to do with point and shoot cameras in particular. If the book had been included for free with a three pack roll of Kodak film you would not have thought that you were getting anything extra of note for your money.
The only good thing I can say about the book is that the paper is slick and of high quality. It is in color and appoximately 3" x 6" and 110 pages long. In my opinion it is worth about 25 cents from a usefulness point of view.

Spy Action-Adventure in graphic comic book form.......2005-04-04
An Adult black & white graphic novel in the spy/action-adventure genre.
Story: CIA agent Douglas Pott is captured by Burmese agents in Rangoon, and held in a camp by a communist warlord, Colonel Wei. A named Don King is sent over to retrieve Pott.
Pott enjoys an evening in a bar in Rangoon, a bar with many barely clothed women. While Pott waits to catch a glimpse of the new "Chinese girl," he fondles two barely clothed women. Immediately upon laying eyes on her, Pott disengages himself, and hurries over to the new girl, who states that her name is Lulu. They hook up, leave the bar and enter a taxi. Lulu is quickly nude, and plays with Pott while the taxi takes them to their destination. The destination? A communist camp, where Pott is captured, and Lulu reveals that she lured him there. At the camp, Lulu teases Pott with a striptease show and an orgy, and told that he will never again enjoy such activities.
The scene next shifts to Don King, on the run from mafia hit men in London. While running along, presumably away from some hit men, Don runs across a woman being raped, and saves her. While the woman tries to show her gratitude to Don, a bunch of gunmen run up and grab Don. From the men that capture Don, we learn that the hit men are after Don, because the mafia is worried that he will decline to take over after his grandfather dies. The mysterious gunmen hire Don King to retrieve Pott for a fee of $50,000. Don King flies to Rangoon, and meets up with a woman from the American Embassy, a certain Fay Harding. And the end of chapter 1.
After Don and Fay separate, Don hooks up with a "professional" hooker, and Fay is arrested by the "police." Fay is attacked, raped, generally abused, and eventually threatened by unwanted touching from two lepers. Fearing for her future life after such an encounter, Fay leaps out of a window, and that's the end of her. "The boss ... told us just to scare her!"
Meanwhile, Don has fun with one prostitute and then meets up with Lulu. While they have some fun, Lulu tries to figure out why the American is in Rangoon ("antiques?"). After almost being killed after he leaves Lulu's building, Don returns and beats the next contact out of her. The contact leads Don to Madame Mumu, who will help him . . . (and the story continues, don't want to give everything away).
Overall, the book was more violent than I expected, though it was an interesting story. The artwork was good, nothing appeared to be censored, and was only somewhat hindered from being a black & white book. While the book was enjoyable enough, after reading this book, I wasn't inspired to seek out more books by this author. Book includes: action/adventure, public nudity, bondage, sex, and death.
Very Erotic - a Graphic Extravaganza.......2000-04-02
Hot Nights in Rangoon is an vividly dipicted erotic or rather X-rated graphic album. The plot itself leaves a little to be desired, but the artwork here is excellent. In fact after the first couple of chapters, I stopped trying to follow the plot and allowed the intensity of the sexual action to sweep me off my feet. Also the action here is very intense and this one is strictly for adults. For those of you who are willing to accept a so-so plot that has a lot of graphically depicted, explicit sex: - go for it.

Book Description
In Sicily, Normandy, and in the frozen hills of the Ardennes, America's airborne warriors proved themselves some of the toughest and most determined soldiers of World War 2. What made these soldiers so special? How were they recruited, how did they learn to jump and fight? What special tactics and equipment did they use? This title looks at what it was like to be one of the United States' airborne elite, through the experiences of the soldiers themselves. It is the story of the men who invariably led the way; the soldiers who flew to battle and walked home.
Customer Reviews:
US Paratrooper1941-45.......2000-12-07
First the good news. The graphics/drawing in the book are very good. The art work of the weapons and equipmnet utilized by the paratroopers is excellent. Several of the pictures (all B/W) are new and not seen on a regular basis. The problem is with the written portion. As you read through the book you will find that several paragraphs have eiher been omitted or repeated. This is very frustrating. As you begin to read about a specific issue it will suddenly end or be repeated. I could not find the remainder of article. It appears that the publisher was in a rush to get this book out and did a poor job of editing. If you want a book for references on uniforms, weapons and equipment this is a good book. If you want to read about the paratoopers adventures I would look else where. This is not one of Osprey's best works.

Book Description
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, European Jews traveled east to seek refuge in the West. Three thousand refugees transited Japan and China, and more than 21,000 spent the war in Japanese-occupied Shanghai. Japanese diplomats in Europe were caught off guard by the flood of visa applicants, and the Foreign Ministry belatedly confronted a refugee problem. Unexpected visitors became uninvited guests. Vice Consul Sugihara Chiune might have faded into history as a minor diplomat in Lithuania had he not issued thousands of transit visas to refugees, including those who fulfilled few visa requirements. Sakamoto demonstrates how he helped thousands escape Europe; in the end, as she points out, a number of Japanese diplomats saved Jews by issuing visas, but very few issued visas to save Jews. Sakamoto focuses on the extensive archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which have not been treated at length before. By examining the cable traffic between diplomats and the ministry headquarters, she reveals the uncensored reactions of Japanese diplomats to Jewish refugees. Through the files of Jewish organizations and the American government, she presents the dimensions of the crisis as Germany's emphasis on emigration changed to extermination. Interviews with former diplomats, refugees, and those who knew Sugihara give human dimensions to a fascinating and little-known episode of the war.

Hidden great story of Schindler in the East.......1999-12-11
The book implies the true story of Japanese diplomat Sugihara, whose list counted thousands of Jewish refugees. His humanitarian deed was so great that Schindler should be called another Sugihara in Poland.
