5 out of 5 stars good quality.......2006-01-17

It took a while to get to me but not long and the book was practically new! I'm very happy with it!

2 out of 5 stars with poor pix, this is too much.......2004-11-11

I was astonished with poor quality of BW pictures this book contains. And I paid $50 for this? The photos are poorly lit so the details are not clear, and not sharp enough for this kind of printing. Texts are rather sketchy too. Intrestingly, resources contain a section for books on presentation models. I found most of them are out of print.
I can just imagine this book's innitial run was so low that gave this hefty price tag to this book.
Unless you have a lot of money to waste, or you're advanced, you'll be surprised like me.

5 out of 5 stars Designing With Models Designing With Models.......2000-06-06

From the standpoint of representation, and despite the advent of computer graphics and animation, the architectural model has persisted in being a privileged way of expressing architectural intentions. The irresistible iconic relation between the model and the building, and the intimacy witnessed through this association, has unquestionably contributed to this survival. Because in the model no extra interpretive energy is needed to grasp the intended, and because there is definitely a pleasure in seeing something big represented by something similar to it but smaller, the critical denigration of model-making has been minimum. This is unlike the case of the plan and other classical modes of projecting buildings where the conventional nature of representation has opened the gates for questioning their legitimacy. From the angle of making and performing, model-making has also remained a very powerful means of exploring ideas that have 3-d space as their support. The relative absence of a cognitive distance between intentions and their crystallization in the sensible realm, due essentially to the paramount role the hand directly plays in the shaping of a given design idea, has reinforced an interest in model-making as a means for expressing the immediate and the spontaneous. A closer relation the other visual arts has followed, and the architectural model has become a competent candidate not only for expressing design ideas but also emotions and feelings. The author, who is both an architect and an artist, seems to be implicitly alluding to these stands in one fashion or the other.

Now this Studio guide to making and using architectural design models begins with an introduction to the equipment, materials and model types. In detail, Chapter Two tackles basic techniques for assembling model components. Cutting, attaching, fitting, templating and finishing routines are provided with clear instructions and illustrations. Chapter Three, I think, remains the heart of the guide. Here the author explores a framework for conceiving and using models. As a pedagogic section, this chapter is full of tutoring guidelines and is a meticulously comprehensive investigation. Much of what is suggested in relation to scale, ideas, manipulation and development of models remains focussed. Mill's analysis here illustrates the paramount role models can play not only in representing defined architectural ideas but also as the prime generators of information without the aid of drawings or exact scales. The dialectical relation between sketch models and concept drawings is investigated nonetheless. But it is the stress on the idea that architectural thinking could be deeply investigated through model-making, with all possible alternatives, that is interesting. "Often, " Mill writes, " new directions emerge that do not follow the original intention. Instead of ignoring these and steering the design along preconceived paths, it can be profitable to let go of earlier ideas and follow the implications suggested by the model. This may involve following the design through a strong shift in direction or even returning to an earlier generation in preference to latter versions. " Other observations like these follow. In Chapter Four, the author applies a step-by-step case study of concepts and techniques in relation to the design of five cases: a residence, a multifamily house, a sculptural foundry, an office building and an urban park. These projects trace the evolution of design from early conceptual stages to finishing models. Many assembly techniques and strategies presented in Chapters Two and Three are shown to convey possible applications in the context of evolving designs. Chapter Five (Creating Curvilinear Forms and Special techniques), presents a range of techniques for making sculptural shapes. "Because sculptural elements are more often needed as components of a model, many of the examples present ideas for creating individual shapes. These can be expanded to entire models if desired." In Chapter Six, examples of model usage from the architecture practice are provided. The author reminds us that in practice, "modeling offers one of the strongest ways of understanding the impact of design decisions on the built work and is of particular value in working with complex geometries." The suggested projects offer examples of models from several types of practices. Many of the strategies discussed in Chapter Three and Four can be seen at work, as well as the connection between built work and the model history that helped form them. Finally, Chapter Seven provides useful advice related to alternative media, related models, transferring model dimensions, photography and detailed presentation models.

As a conclusion, Designing With Models contributes to the (modest) body of literature on model-making in a significant way. It is, to my knowledge, the first complete step-by-step guide to fundamental and well-developed modeling. One could not fault the visual clarity and graphic organization of the work. The black and white photographs do not stand isolated but are balanced by the supplemented comments. The text includes sufficient information for a thorough understanding of the proposed model-making techniques. Although some of it is concise, the text is for the most part well written, and to the point. The lack of a bibliographical section, however, is somehow disappointing, but then the book does not pretend to be a theoretical treatise or a scholarly work.

4 out of 5 stars Design With Models: A Studio Guide to Making and Using Arch.......2000-05-17

Gives helpful methods of design methods intergrated with the model creation process. Things such as representation of materiality and techniques in the process of model creation are described. Very nice tool for those looking to branch their technique past 3D/2D computer and hand drawing design.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for learning wildlife photography.......2002-03-05

I particularly like Jim Zucerman's way of giving advice. He has several images per chapter, and he dissects how they were taken, how they were marketed, how they were set up, etc.

Sprinkle in a few location recommendations each chapter, and this book is well worth the 24.95 i paid. The day after I bought it, his tips for photographing an aquarium came in handy. ...

      5 out of 5 stars Great inspiration.......2000-10-25

This book really helps with fine tuning your photo techniques by exploring more interesting compositions of the same subject. It touches on lighting, filters and techniques breifly and goes into more depth on marketing your images. This is a great book for someone who has been taking pictures for awhile and is looking to improve their photography and possibly start submitting photos for print. Highly recommend this book to those intermediate to advanced amatures looking to break into the world of proffessional photography, or maybe just dabble in it a little. Great book

5 out of 5 stars Business tips from the Photo Biz Expert.......2000-08-17

The nature photography market is one that is extremely diverse. Nature images are used on everything from printed stationery in the form of note cards and stationary to photographs used as advertising painted on a commerical airplane's tail. They are used as backgrounds to sell commercial products and used in text books for teaching about the environment and nature.

With such a diverse market, Jim Zukerman tackles the marketing of nature images with a clarity and skill - you feel like you are sitting in his living room having a good chat. The book is easy to read and gives the reader a good foundation on how the business works. The tips are excellent for putting together promotional packages and guidelines for selling your work. The images included with the text show how different pictures work for different markets, too.

The photographs in the book are inspiration enough for any photographer, motivating them to go out and get the same quality. But the points of how the business works and what does work and what doesn't, from the editorial to commerical markets, is fantastic. It should be on every nature photographer's shelf - for the pictures or the information! A great resource.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Informative behind-the-scenes look at AA.......2006-11-02

Heard the taped version of GETTING BETTER by
Nan Robertson, an inside look at Alcoholics
        Anonymous . . . I've often wondered about this
group, but had seen little ever written about it--in
part because of the anonymity factor.

        Somehow, Robertson (a Pulitzer Prize-winning
reporter for THE NEW YORK TIMES) got permission
to write the book . . . in it, she tells the story of how a failed
stockbroker and a surgeon together found a way to stay
        sober--one day at a time.

She also describes what happens at the actual meetings . . . and
that is what I perhaps liked best about the book: its
behind-the scenes view of these gatherings . . . the
fact that Robertson actually attended many of these as
a recovering alcoholic made her reporting all the more believable.

I also liked how she summarized the message of message
of AAA into these three key points: Be honest, change
        yourself and help others.

GETTING BETTER was made even more enjoyable by Michael
        Learned's excellent narration.

4 out of 5 stars Good history of AA and the recovery "industry".......2001-07-10

This book is well researched (including interviews with the widow of Bill W, co-founder of AA) and well written. It gives an honest history of the origins of AA without the trappings of saintliness often given to Bill Wilson from the works published by the AA general services office and some other sources. For examples, Bill's infidelities, neglecting family responsibilities to help fellow drunks, and "post-sobriety" experiments with LSD and other chemicals are mentioned. The history sections on AA are excellent as a result of this objectivity. The author also gives an excellent account of typical experience in in-patient rehab.

The author's personal story is equally compelling, and touches on issues chemically dependant individuals face, including how alcohol addiction relates to other facets of life, including depression and physical illness.

All in all, one of the better works on AA and the disease of alcoholism. As a well qualified member of AA, I have one message for other AA members concerned with the author "violating" the 11th tradition on anonimity: "get over it!". Bill Wilson was (and is) hardly "anonymous". If his widow didn't have a problem with this work neither should we.

5 out of 5 stars The best of my 28 years in sobriety.......2000-11-27

Nan Robertson's book is the most accurate I have ever read concerning Alcoholics Anonymous. She is devoted to AA, but more so to her research and her honest in writing. If I had to read one book concerning AA, this would be the one. Robert F. Hale

5 out of 5 stars The complete story.......2000-10-06

Ms. Robertson's book is a comprehensive review of Alcoholics Anonymous and it's co-founder Bill Wilson. She gives a surprisingly objective history of Bill W.'s life, his joining with Bob Smith, the other co-founder of AA, and AA's evolution into, perhaps, the most sigificant spiritual program of the 20th century. The only negative aspect of the book is Ms. Robertson's compromising of the 12th Tradition of AA which is maintaining personal anonimity in press, radio and films. I strongly urge anyone in recovery from substance dependence as well as mental health professionals to read this book for greater knowledge of the famous founder of AA.

            Book Description

Families today often face a range of urgent problems, and practitioners need to intervene with the most effective methods possible, methods which have been tested and that have proven clinical utility. Mental health service delivery systems are increasingly moving toward these empirically-validated approaches, and practitioners need guidelines as to how such treatments may be implemented in daily practice. Evidence-Based Family Interventions reviews the empirically validated treatments that are relevant for family practice in the social work setting. Jacqueline Corcoran, a social work professor with extensive experience in varied settings, addresses some of the most prevalent areas of sexual abuse, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct problems, substance abuse, and depression. Within each area, Corcoran presents evidence-based approaches, including psychoeducation, behavioral parent training, solution-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral treatment, structural family therapy, and multisystemic treatment. For each problem area, a detailed case study provides step-by-step guidelines on how the empirically validated theory can be applied in practice. This volume offers the type of reader-friendly application of family treatment theory most needed by practitioners. It is an essential guide for caseworkers and clinicians involved in child welfare, family preservation, juvenile justice, and family mental health counseling and guidance.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Scientific Study !.......2000-01-31

This book is very interesting. It is very comprehensive in its organization, especially for those who are interested in scientific study of peace and war. This book consists of several articles from many famous peace researchers, and the best part is both the editors put some comments, classified into findings and methodological description, even explanation of the articles presented. All in all, I would recommend this book for all students of IR who are interested in quantitative IR.

                Book Description

A one-volume narrative history of China, from the earliest inhabitants to the twentieth century, for a popular readership

China is a country with an ancient and highly sophisticated civilization of which the Chinese have been justly proud. When the countries of Europe were struggling to move beyond mud huts and stone tools the Chinese already had a highly complex society and were creating works of great beauty. Yet, although it has for many years been a source of great fascination to the West, the history of China remains a mystery to the layman. In this highly accessible narrative written for the general reader, Rayne Kruger produces a synthesis of Chinese history for the non-specialist reader.

Rayne Kruger was born in South Africa and began his working life in a Johannesburg goldmine before becoming in succession a lawyer, broadcaster and actor. He emigrated to England in 1947 where he joined the BBC. He wrote a number of successful novels, followed by a history of South Africa (1959) Goodbye Dolly Gray, which has remained in print ever since. An astute business man, he then founded a property group. He subsequently went into partnership with his wife, the successful restauranteur and cookery school entrepreneur Prue Leith (business woman of the year 1990). He died on 21 December 2002.

3 out of 5 stars Sadly to brief for 3500 years of excitement.......2005-06-05

All under Heaven is a readable book. Unfortunately its fatal flaw is one of strategy not tactics. One just cannot tackle 3500 years of history of the largest country on planet earth in 400 odd pages. It is simply impossible. For instance the Hsia dynasty get only the briefest of mentions. What happens is that a vast quantity of important history is simply glossed over, and one to two particular historical episodes in each dynasty gets the star detailed treatment eg Wang Mang in the Han. The consequence is that whilst you get a mildly entertaining read and learn a little about chinese history - you do not actually learn a great deal about chinese history.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, if difficult to read........2005-03-22

I purchased this book to expand my very limited knowledge of China's history. The content of the book is interesting and it covers a lot of history in a concise fashion. As another reviewer has said, the book does tend to focus on specific themes for each dynasty but this is reasonible considering the amount of space available.
It was a struggle to deal with the language and sentence construction of this book. Words are often used in an archaic sense and there are instances which I can only describe as grammatical errors.
Worth a look but be prepared to reread certain sections for clarity. I rate it ***, well worth reading for the novice historian.

                5 out of 5 stars A magnificent summary.......2004-11-25

I found this book a gem of historical synthesis and clarity. It's not easy to make an adequate summary of the millennial history of China, from prehistory to the inception of Twentieth Century, but I think the Author has succeeded, stressing the most important factors of each era, and giving us a good introduction to Chinese history.

                2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Brief & Confusing.......2004-05-19

I was very much interested in this book when I found it on Amazon.ca, especially with regards to the title "A Complete History of China". I expected a review of historical events with a proper timeline, yet what I found in this book was a narrative story with the timeline, but tend to be circling around on certain subjects. Rather than describing all the major events in the Chinese history, the author was a bit heavy on certain subjects in every of his chapters. For example, in one chapter regarding the Chou era, he put a lot of stress on Confucius rather than the then government/political leaders.
There are some interesting points that the Author made in this book such as how cast iron was highly developed in China meanwhile the Western civilations were still in the simpler and less capacity wrought iron technology. But even there, the Author lacked a more in-depth on why and how it occured.
Another point I'd include here is the language that the Author uses, which is rather hard for me to digest. I had to read one paragraph at least twice to understand the main points.
If English is your second language or reading book is not your natural talent, I'd suggest to find another reference for learning the Chinese history.
