This look at the loose alliance of designer-builders known as "Jersey Devil" and their eccentric, design-as-you-go projects of the last 25 years is a book for endless perusal. The three principal founders of Jersey Devil, Steve Badanes, Jim Adamson, and John Ringel, aren't registered architects, although they have studied architecture. They have built together, separately, and with various friends and associates, but all they share, corporately, is a post-office box. They've created some of the most innovative, outrageous, lovingly crafted, energy-efficient, curvaceous homes around, none of which looks like any we've seen in our neighborhood. Their fun and funky architecture is usually called "alternative," but it is, in fact, both practical and highly principled. Which is why Jersey Devil is trickling into the mainstream, with wise designs for such important buildings as, for example, a Montessori school. --Margaret Moorman
Book Description
For 25 years the architects who make up Jersey Devil have ?been constructing their own designs while living on site in tents ?or Airstream trailers, making adjustments to their structures in response to problems encountered during the building process. Jersey Devil is a name that has been attached to work by Steve Badanes, John Ringel, Jim Adamson, or any combination of the above, plus many other people who have participated in their diverse projects. This loose-knit group of designer-builders has ?created projects that critique conventional practice, both the process of making architecture and the accepted definitions of architecture itself. Jersey Devil's architecture shows a concern for craft and detail, an attention to the expressiveness of the construction materials, and a strong environmental consciousness.?
?Devil's Workshop contains complete project descriptions, photo-graphs, drawings, and plans on more than a dozen projects, including the Snail House, the Silo House, the Hoagie House, and the Seaside Pavillion. Essays analyze Jersey Devil's work, providing an insight into the design-build process and its historical context, and discussing the formal qualities inherent in these projects.

Design-Build Architecture Got Never This Funky.......2003-04-27
Steve Badanes came to our school at the beginning of this year, 2003, and gave a lecture on their work. Their work is quite impressive, to begin with. Three unlicensed architects - including Badanes - leave Princeton and go on their own adventure. All they have is a mailbox, and nothing else. Badanes has a trailer, which he drives to the sites and sleeps in meanwhile. Jersey Devil do their design in the site, and build as they design, design as they build. Therefore, their structures become very integrated with the surroundings.
Jersey Devil name their projects with the objects that resemble the building's shape. 'Football House', 'Hoagie House' are among these. When you flip through the pages, you'll see that the 'Aeroplane House' actually looks like an aeroplane.
Their architecture is definitely worthwhile to know about. But, the book is not necessarily as good as their architecture. It does not include a comprehensive review of their projects. Some projects are mentioned only one page with two photos. The introduction, and the general writing is well done. However, as I've said, their specific projects could have been dealt in more detail. I've listened to Badanes in his lecture, and read the book as well. But, the lecture was far more engrossing and interesting.
Nevertheless, for everyone who wants to know about Jersey Devil architecture, this book is the only source to absorb. Purchase it, but do not expect full satisfaction, as the book lacks a lot of details related to projects.
if only you had a half star rating..........2001-12-22
As a professional with over 25 years in the building trades, i found this short of its billing as being concerned with the design-build approach. I do not know if the author has had any experience in an actual design build process at a significant scale because it seems to me, the author of the essay tried to mask her inexperience with superfluous vocabulary which only reinforces the gap between the view of academics and the professionals who have knowledge through craft. If the wish was to link the trades with the profession of architecture in this text, then it failed.
It did offer some good photography of some airstream trailers, if only more of these were used on site as construction offices.
ARCHITECTURE OR REVOLUTION. REVOLUTION CAN BE AVOIDED.......1999-05-29
THE FORM LANGUAGE MAY BE INDIOSYNCRATIC BUT THE PRINCIPALS OF THE DESIGN ARE UNIVERSAL. UNIQUELY WELL WRITTEN ESSAY BY THE AUTHOR SUSAN PIEDMONT-PALLADINO. A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO CALLS THEM SELF A 21CENTRY ARCHITECT
great book, great architecture........1999-01-12
great book, great architecture. this is exactly what architecture needs. makes most of contemporary architecture look like a self-indulgent foolish waste of time, energy, and resources.

I used this book as part of a class I took in college. It is a fairly decent text with easy-to-grasp concepts, but the illustrations seem a bit cluttered. Good for beginner to intermediate drafters. Great price.

Cowboys: A Vanishing World
ASIN: 0967744016 |
Book Description
The cowboy and his environment are among the most evocative, enigmatic, and surprisingly romantic icons of the American experience. Though considered an anachronistic occupation, the cowboy survives, and contemporary cowboy life is masterfully revealed in this new book of large-format duotone photographs. The apparent isolation of life on the range is balanced by the pride the cowboys exude in their work, and in the tightly bound communities in which they live and operate.
Gathering Remnants presents a world ruled by tradition and a strong ingrained work ethic, which fires our imagination and connects us to our own primal needs for rugged individualism. What makes this book unique is the photographer's ability to capture the authenticity and solidarity of the cowboy's world--vast, flat rangeland that is striking in its subtle beauty.
"Gathering Remnants is a sumptuous book, unabashedly romantic: cowboy as archetype. A spiritual tome, a prayer to a way of life we need to believe in as we stumble through our own, over-scheduled lives."Teresa Jordan, author of Riding the White Horse Home: A Western Family Album
Contemporary cowboy life is masterfully revealed in this new book of large-format duotone photographs.

Wow.......2007-09-04
Kendall Nelson captures her subject well. I saw her photos on display at my friend's house and she showed me the book. I couldn't afford the photos, but the book was right in my range. Book is great. Photos are wonderful. I especially enjoy the photo of the cowgirl and her dog.
Shooting cowboys and buckaroos on the open range.......2003-07-02
Here's another book of fine photography devoted to cowboys and buckaroos, this time put together by three women. It's a big oversize book, with 48 black and white plates by California photographer Kendall Nelson. The rather worshipful and romantic text is by German-born writer Felicitas Funke-Riehle. Gretel Ehrlich has provided an introduction about the lonely, hard work of a cowboy, written in her own meticulous eye-for-detail style. (Clint Eastwood has a brief 5-sentence foreword.)
The photos were taken 1996-1999 on several ranches in Nevada, with some additional shots taken in Texas, Wyoming, and Idaho. Most of them are of individual cowboys, many with their horses. Typically they are captured against a sweeping terrain under a big sky with scattered clouds. A buckaroo gathers sage brush for a branding fire. Another sits in the open flap of a teepee tent bent over a silver bit he's repairing, Four vaqueros sit in the shade against a wall, smoking cigarettes, the oldest of them watching the photographer.
Cowboys move cattle through sage brush, raising clouds of dust. A cowboss stands with his wife and son against the plank walls of a shed, their three border collies gathered at their feet. A man leans, head down against a fence, snow collecting on the brim of his hat. The photographs capture the relentless, hard work of these men and something of their solitude. Even as they wait for their horses (see cover photograph) they stand separately, keeping a distance between them. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cowboys, cattle ranching, Western life, and thoughtful photography. For vintage photographs of cowboys, I suggest also Richard Collins' "The American Cowboy."
Classic cowboy photos.......2001-04-19
Timeless black and white photography of a timeless subject, Cowboys of the American West. Well done with an obvious emotional connection to her work. A must for everyone's home and heart!
A beautiful tribute to the American west - you'll love it!.......2001-04-06
If you have any interest in cowboys or the American west, you'll love this book. The stunning photographs and elegent text tell the story of a simple, rugged lifestyle that is, sadly, disappearing all too quickly from our national landscape.
You'll want to keep this one handy to look at again and again. And it makes a great gift!
A tribute to the working cowboy - for sure.......2001-02-01
The coffee table book does an extraordinary job of documenting contemporary cowboys. The book is a must for all to see.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book for children who are terminally ill with ca.......2000-04-25
This book is wonderful! The descriptions of how the caterpillar changes into a butterfly are great and they relate so well to how a child would perceive themselves to change when they die. Explaining death to a child is extremely difficult, but this book does it beautifully and gives a child hope that they will be able to return in some way and let their loved ones know that they are happy. The illustrations are beautiful. This is a must have for social workers in the field of pediatric oncology. I recommend it enthusiastically. Many books on death are either too esoteric or too babyish. Children with cancer have experienced a great deal in their short lives and therefore have a greater understanding than most on death and the afterlife. This book acknowledges that understanding, embraces it, and then rejoices with the child in the new life that they are going to have. I have seen this book read at wakes, funerals and at the time of death to children, and it is very helpful to the child as well as to the family that is left behind. A wonderful book.

Book Description
Did America's departure from Vietnam produce the peace with honor promised by President Richard Nixon or was that simply an empty wish meant to distract war-weary Americans from a tragic defeat with shame? While James Willbanks doesn't offer any easy answers to that question, his book con-vincingly shows why America's strategy for exiting the Vietnam War failed miserably and left South Vietnam to a dismal fate.
That strategy, Vietnamization, was designed to transfer full responsibility for the defense of South Vietnam to the South Vietnamese, but in a way that would buy the United States enough time to get out without appearing to run away. To achieve this goal, America poured millions of dollars into training and equipping the South Vietnamese military while attempting to pacify the countryside. Precisely how this strategy was implemented and why it failed so completely are the subjects of this eye-opening study.
Drawing upon both archival research and his own military experiences in Vietnam, Willbanks focuses on military operations from 1969 through 1975. He contends that Vietnamization was a potentially viable plan that was begun years too late. Nevertheless some progress was made and the South Vietnamese, with the aid of U.S. advisers and American airpower, held off the North Vietnamese during their massive offensive in 1972. However, the Paris Peace Accords, which left NVA troops in the south, and the subsequent loss of U.S. military aid negated any gains produced through Vietnamization. These factors coupled with corruption throughout President Thieu's government and a glaring lack of senior military leadership within the South Vietnamese armed forces ultimately led to the demise of South Vietnam.
A mere two years after the last American combat troops had departed, North Vietnamese tanks rolled into Saigon, overwhelming a poorly trained, disastrously led, and corrupt South Vietnamese military. But those two years had provided Nixon with the decent interval he desperately needed to proclaim that peace with honor had been achieved. Willbanks digs beneath that illusion to reveal the real story of South Vietnam's fall.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.
Customer Reviews:
Incomplete.......2006-01-19
While this book is better than most out there about the Vietnam War, it is still very incomplete because it only covers one side: the American's. The South Vietnamese side was not included.
Many of the reports written about certain Vietnamese commanders were based on personal biases. The Yes-sir type got good reviews and those dared to speak up or point out the weaknesses were consider "not cooperative". Those reports were based to write about Corps I and Corps II for example. When you rated someone as uncooperative, give an example. The book did not do that.
History should be fair and balanced. Yes, there are plenty of blames to go around but we need to put them where they are due.
This book could be much better.

A Definitive History of the Period Covered.......2005-09-12
James H. Wilbanks has written one of the finest military histories to date of the final two stages of the Vietnam War: the period from the Tet Offensive in 1968 to the American withdrawal in 1972, and the bitter end game, 1972-1975. A retired U.S. Army officer and a professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Wilbanks focuses much of his attention on the Nixon Administration's strategy of strengthening the Armed Forces of South Vietnam (RVNAF) while at the same time withdrawing American forces from the war. Known as "Vietnamization," the goal of the program was to make the RVNAF capable of standing alone against its Communist opponents. Why Vietnamization failed just two years after the United States withdrew its forces from Vietnam on 29 March 1973 is the central question of the book.
Drawing on an impressive range of primary and secondary sources, Wilbanks charts the course of Vietnamization from its origin in 1969 until the fall of Saigon in 1972. In addition to providing superb summaries of the major military campaigns fought by the RVNAF during this period, Wilbanks also delves into some of the political-military elements of the story. We learn, for example, that General Creighton W. Abrams, the Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam, warned the Nixon Administration in a 2 September 1969 memo that Vietnamization "would not permit" the South Vietnamese to handle the combined threat of a North Vietnamese invasion and the insurgency in the South (28). The main reasons for his pessimistic outlook were "poor leadership, high desertion rates, and corruption in the upper ranks of the RVNAF" (28).
All the same, Nixon's Defense Secretary, Melvin Laird insisted on going forward with the strategy even though the "best that the United States could hope for was to build-up the South Vietnamese so that they could hold on for at least a decent interval after the American troops had been withdrawn" (28). Laird had to reject Abrams's assessment because accepting it would have meant admitting "that the United States could never gracefully exit Vietnam" and achieve Nixon's goal of "peace with honor" (28).
In the end, Wilbanks reveals that Vietnamization "achieved neither peace nor honor"(4). Beginning with the Operation Lam Som 719 debacle in 1971 and ending North Vietnam's invasion of South Vietnam in 1975, Abandoning Vietnam carefully analyzes the final battles of the RVNAF. It is not a pretty story, but there were some shining moments such as the 1972 Easter Offensive, when the RVNAF managed to hold on against a 14-division North Vietnamese attack. Wilbanks, who fought at the besieged city of An Loc during this campaign, attributed much of the success of the RVNAF in 1972 to the presence of American advisors on the ground combined with American air power and naval gunfire support. Three years later when these American elements were not available to "save South Vietnam" (160), Saigon fell in a mere 55 days.
As much as he criticizes Nixon's Vietnamization program, Wilbanks does not completely condemn the concept of America training a developing country's army to defend itself and its nation. Had Vietnamization been applied in 1965, or 1963 for that matter, rather than 1969, the RVNAF might have survived longer or perhaps even achieved a lasting stalemate similar to Korea. Instead, the Johnson Administration relegated the RVNAF to a secondary role 1965 and "Americanized" the war. By introducing large numbers of U.S. troops into Vietnam to bear the brunt of the heavy combat between 1965 and 1968, the Johnson Administration not only retarded the natural growth and development of the RVNAF, but indoctrinated it in a style of war inappropriate for the military of a lesser developed country: big unit operations that relied heavily on advanced technology and firepower. As retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Douglas Kinnard put it, "we erroneously tried to impose the American system on a people who didn't want it, couldn't handle it and may lose because they tried it" (287).
A far better approach, Wilbanks points out, would have been to train the RVNAF in small unit, counter-insurgency warfare. Not only would this approach have made the RVNAF more mobile and capable of dealing with the demands of guerilla warfare-the predominant form of warfare between 1963 and 1968-but it also would have made it less dependent on the United States for technology, ammunition, and advisors. Wilbanks argues that a counter-insurgency force with extensive battle experience, sound leadership, and a proven track record of operating independently of foreign advisors had a better chance of transforming itself into a modern, conventional army than one hamstrung by a history of dependency on American military assistance and know-how. Such a force also would have been more accustomed to fighting with maneuver and light arms as opposed to heavy firepower and high technology-useful competencies to posses when American military assistance began to dry up after 1973.
But in the final analysis, Wilbanks contends that the South Vietnamese "deserve a large part of the blame themselves" (287). To succeed, a military force must be led "by men of courage and skill, and have purposes worth fighting and dying for" (288). Without those critical ingredients, the best intentions in the world are meaningless.
This is sobering tale told by balanced, exacting scholar. The level of Wilbanks's research not only meets the bar of most current scholarly publications, but exceeds it in many areas, especially his use of U.S. Army documents. Wilbanks carefully builds each of his major arguments with the best available evidence, and is careful to employ historiography from all sides of the political spectrum in making his case. One will find, for instance, quotations from Marxist scholars and U.S. Army generals in the same paragraph, making nearly identical observations about the war. In short, Wilbanks's history of the period along with Jeffrey J. Clarke's Advice and Support: The Final Years, 1965-1973 will stand out as a seminal account of the period for many years to come.

Book Description
Because the Holocaust, at its core, was an extreme expression of a devastating racism, the author contends it has special significance for African Americans. Locke, a university professor, clergyman, and African American, reflects on the common experiences of African American and Jewish people as minorities and on the great tragedy that each community has experienced in its history--slavery and the Holocaust. Without attempting to equate the experiences of African Americans to the experiences of European Jews during the Holocaust, the author does show how aspects of the Holocaust, its impact on the Jewish community worldwide, and the long-lasting consequences relate to slavery, the civil rights movement, and the current status of African Americans. Written from a Christian perspective, this book argues that the implications of the Holocaust touch all people, and that it is a major mistake to view the Holocaust as an exclusively Jewish event. Instead, the author asks whether it is possible for both African Americans and Jewish Americans to learn from the experience of the other regarding the common threat that minority people confront in Western societies. Locke focuses on the themes of parochialism and patriotism and reexamines the role of the Christian churches during the Holocaust in an effort to challenge some of the prevailing views in Holocaust studies.

Book Description
You know the man. He's the one who looks good at a glance -- but not so good once you get to know him. What kind of women fall for him, and why? What are the chances he will change? And what if you've already married him?
More than just a checklist of men to steer clear of, Avoiding Mr. Wrong is a powerful tool to help women learn more about themselves and the Mr. Wrongs to whom they often feel drawn. Those men include: The Control Freak, The Mama's Boy, The Cowardly Lion, The Ungodly Man, and Mr. Wonderful.
Complete with a diagnostic quiz and quick reference lists, Avoiding Mr. Wrong is ideal for women whose hopes have been dashed again and again by a seemingly promising relationship. The book helps them to see more clearly, think more rationally, and act more wisely in the pursuit of Mr. Right.
Customer Reviews:
Stephen Arteburn is like the voice of reason..........2007-01-04
I really enjoyed this book! So much so, I brought additional copies and gave it to people. I enjoyed it because it did not candy coat things. It let's you know what to look for in other, as well as, what to take notice of in yourself. It is a great book to read it you really want to begin making changes in your life.
Not too helpful...Sorry.......2003-10-04
I got this book based on the description and the reviews written. I found the book to be something easy to just flip through although I tried to read page for page, it was just not too insightful. The stories were good to read, and the checklist/info at the end of each chapter was good. The only thing I did not like was the Bible/Christian perspective of the book. It does not allow all readers to relate to. Some of the suggested advice was to ACCEPT GOD? The author should have atleast indicated where some of the perspective was geared towards. Not every one is Christian, and not every can relate to the bible or a cheating minister as a husband =(
Best Book To Spot The Wrong Men!.......2001-12-04
Wonderful insightful book. It seems so simple, that you would be able to spot these men a mile away and run the other way but not true for some. This book has explained in clear language with a touch of spiritual aspect but not too much. Very real and straight to the point. I suggest this book for women of all ages. A must read.
A MAN TELLING ON HIMSELF WHILE TELLING WOMEN THE DEAL............2001-07-30
This book, writen from a frank, but Christian perspective, lists the types on men to avoid, what they look for in a partner/victim, why the women themselves are drawn to these losers and how to work through the issues to eventually create a better relationship (except if the man is violent). The 2 end chapters also give tips on how to steer clear of "Mr. Wrong" to begin with and hope on making the existing relationship a healthier one. Mr. Arterburn's disclosure of his past mistakes, dry humor and case scenarios make this book a must-read for women who want to empower themselves, gain insight into these types of "men" and start on the path to "Mr. Right", and it will help the men who are open-minded enough to want to correct their flaws. I highly, whole-heartedly recommend this important book.
Life Changing.......2001-07-17
I have shared this book with many, many friends and their daughters. I share it in the hopes that it will keep others from marrying a Mr. Wrong. I am recently divorced, however, I began to read this book while separated from my husband. It helped me to better understand the dynamics of my marriage and my relationship with my husband. The power of this book is beyond measure. RED FLAG: NEVER MARRY SOMEONE WHO IS IN A HURRY TO MARRY. He may be a deceiver who is afraid that you will find out who he really is, so he hurries you. GREAT ADVICE: INTRODUCE HIM TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, BE OPEN TO THEIR INPUT. Mr. Wrong will try to keep away from those who will be honest with you. I now look at relationships in completely different ways, and often times find my self saying .... he is a deceiver, he is a momma's boy....etc. I will continue to read this book over time to avoid meeting a Mr. Wrong and marrying him. One critical feature of the book is identifying characteristics that are changable and those that are likely to never to change and are potentially dangerous. This is a must read.

Book Description
Though the world's population continues to grow, total fertility rates are dropping below replacement level in many parts of the world. The Baby Bust, a landmark book of essays by demographic, economic, and political science experts, examines the global birth dearth and its causes, implications, and policy options. Focusing in large part on the United States, this book also includes data from Europe and Japan and makes important comparisons between the three regions. It concludes with suggestions for making America's future sound and prosperous, through the regularization and legalization of appropriate levels of immigration; enhancing governmental efforts to increase productivity; and finally, ending the present waste of so many underutilized members of the workforce, particularly minorities and the poor. Book Description
The question "Who will do science?" is one of growing urgency in the United States. Fewer U.S. college students are choosing to study math, science, and engineering--and half of those who do eventually switch to nonscience majors. Moreover, U.S. students do not perform well on science and math achievement tests or in international competitions. If current trends continue, there will be a serious shortage of qualified candidates to fill the vacancies when scientists trained in the 1950s and 1960s retire.
In Who Will Do Science? scholars and policy analysts from a variety of disciplines describe the present demographic situation, analyze the effectiveness of current programs for recruitment and retention, and examine policies that will improve the education of tomorrow's scientists and engineers. Topics discussed include the motives of students as they consider careers; the attitudes and influence of parents, teachers, and peers; the challenges faced by women and minorities; and the need for financial support during the lengthy training required to pursue careers in science.
