You can't judge this book by its cover -- or iits title........2000-02-28

Based on the title, I was expecting a book full of some "Dream" ideas of features that modern European architects were incorporating into their designs. What I received was a plan book (ALL plans for sale) of "Luxury European" homes designed by mostly American architects with little insight into any European design criteria. The book is basically a catalog of perspective renderings of homes to be built with accompanying floor plans. Written criteria includes a one page introduction to the plan book. Additional written criteria includes a few brief paragraphs written by each architect espousing the unique European features of the "American" architect's design. There are a total of 18 interior home pictures (all captioned) on 9 of the 29 pages of the first chapter titled "Gallery of European Style". The chapter contains mostly pictures of built homes -- all with plans for sale. As a book of plans, I found the designs mostly interesting and the architects' work above average. The book is well worth having if one is looking for a catalog book of expensive "European Style" home designs plans. Nevertheless, the insights I was expecting from the title are going to be much more of a chore to find by reviewing each and every plan -- and, are they really going to be "European"?

Amazing Guide for Collectors !.......2004-03-01

I started collecting Hotwheels cars about 3 years ago. What makes me different than most of the other collectors, is that I live in Santiago, CHILE (here, Hotwheels cars market is very small compared with other countries). Many of the variations and models that exist in US, aren't available here. Mike's guide has been an invaluable tool for me to get those variations I never know that exist or I will never find hanging in pegs in Santiago.

I also have had the chance to email Mike many times and he's very compromised with this hobby (or better said, passion!).

If you love Hotwheels cars, you MUST buy this guide (or the new one that's coming by the end of March 2004).

Invaluable Resource For Collectors.......2003-04-02

I found the 'Ultimate Guide to Hot Wheels Variations' one of the most valuable resources to date for the valuation of Hot Wheels variations; both for collectors and dealers alike. As owner of [a web site,] I refer to this guide on a daily basis for determining the minute differences between Hot Wheels variants. The guide is concise, well laid out, easy to follow, and extremely accurate (in my opinion).

Hi Michael I had the pleasure of getting a copy of your book. It is excellent very informative and a great tool for us collectors. The descriptions were complete and detailed. I have been telling my fellow collectors about it. Finally a book that answers the question "Is there anyone more obsessed with Hot Wheels than me?" Well Michael my deepest sympathy it might be you. LOL . But I do want to give you your deserved recognition for a job well done on the book. Looking foward to future updates of your book. Finally a book on Variations!.......2002-05-03

This is a great book and being a variation collector for many years I can tell you that if there is a variation not listed in Mikes book, it probably does not exist. I have trusted this guy for many years and he has always been a straight shooter. I have never hunted for cars that were just rumors. I was so glad when I heard this book was coming out, I couldn't wait to buy it. It would be great if I had something he didn't have in there, but I'm still looking for all the things that are! And by the way. The Suzuki Quad is listed on Page 79 number 311 c variation, listed as "Tiger Paw Wheel" which some would call the POW wheel. Mike has always used his own abbriviations. That's why I like him and his book. (His web site was great, sure do miss it) He doesn't follow anybody elses lead. He goes his own way. I have met him and he is real easy to talk to. He is also the first one to admit when he is wrong, which you don't see too much these days when people write books. Thanks for the great book, I can't wait for the next one!

Gorgeous photos!.......2000-08-11

John Rosenthal's photographs are breathtaking. While the photograph pictured on the cover is incredible, there are countless photos inside featuring people. John has a knack for catching the most extraordinary facial expressions, truly capturing the energy and essence of a moment. I highly reccommend this book for any black and white photography buff.

The Islamic scientific tradition has been described many times in accounts of Islamic civilization and general histories of science, with most authors tracing its beginnings to the appropriation of ideas from other ancient civilizations--the Greeks in particular. In this thought-provoking and original book, George Saliba argues that, contrary to the generally accepted view, the foundations of Islamic scientific thought were laid well before Greek sources were formally translated into Arabic in the ninth century. Drawing on an account by the tenth-century intellectual historian Ibn al-Nadīm that is ignored by most modern scholars, Saliba suggests that early translations from mainly Persian and Greek sources outlining elementary scientific ideas for the use of government departments were the impetus for the development of the Islamic scientific tradition. He argues further that there was an organic relationship between the Islamic scientific thought that developed in later centuries and the science that came into being in Europe during the Renaissance.

Saliba outlines the conventional accounts of Islamic science, then discusses their shortcomings and proposes an alternate narrative. Using astronomy as a template for understanding the progress of science in Islamic civilization, Saliba demonstrates the originality of Islamic scientific thought. He details the innovations (including new mathematical tools) made by the Islamic astronomers from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, and offers evidence that Copernicus could have known of and drawn on their work. Rather than viewing the rise and fall of Islamic science from the often-narrated perspectives of politics and religion, Saliba focuses on the scientific production itself and the complex social, economic, and intellectual conditions that made it possible.
