New look, a hard cover version for Der Mond!
Stylish, delicate, and consistently edgy, Der Mond collects the color illustrations of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, perhaps the most acclaimed manga and anime artist of all time. The book includes 74 pages of paintings and designs devoted to Neon Genesis Evangelion, plus another 50 pages from The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia--The Secret of Blue Water, Blue Uru, and other works--including Sadamoto's cover to Eric Clapton's 1998 album, Pilgrim.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent art.......2007-01-12
The art in Der Mond is excellent. I would say this is a must have for any Evangelion fan.
Great art book........2007-01-10
This book has some of the art from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
It also contains some great concept art and some other art from other animes as well. If you have watched and liked this anime series, i suggest you buy this book
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's Kaleidoscopic Universe: Der Mond.......2007-01-07
Neon Genesis Evangelion has justly gained its reputation as both the most cherished and the most controversial animé of all time. Audaciously redefining the mecha genre, the saga interweaves its intriguing sci-fi premise and adrenaline-pumping action sequences with a darkly thoughtful exploration of the human condition featuring some of the most contorted personalities ever committed to film (animated or otherwise). In the process, Evangelion yields a formally daring avant-garde achievement, oozing with esoteric symbolism, psychoanalytical allusions, intrepid cinematography and open-ended plot threads.
Although both the original TV series (1995-1996) and the feature-length sequels (1997) have spawned a vast array of peripheral merchandise in the form of countless tie-ins and spin-offs, it is practically impossible to imagine a more inspiring companion to the animations than Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's Der Mond. Sleek, lustrous and often unsettling, this art book exquisitely captures the entire saga's aesthetic. One of Studio Gainax's founders, Sadamoto (b. 1962) is unanimously regarded as one of the most accomplished manga artists and animé character designers ever. Der Mond eloquently confirms these credentials by showcasing over 70 pages of paintings and designs created for Evangelion, as well as a generous selection of works devoted to Gainax's debut production Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Blue Uru and Sadamoto's memorable cover for Eric Clapton's album Pilgrim (1998).
As far as Evangelion is specifically concerned, the book offers a rich gallery of captivating and convincing characters. Their settings, both natural and architectural, are meticulously rendered, with unremitting attention to minute details and subtle nuances. The structural complexity and both textural and chromatic sumptuousness of the Eva biomechanoids is likewise conveyed with passionate care. Der Mond also demonstrates Sadamoto's knack of imagining the characters in roles and contexts external to the logic of the original animé and of placing them in a variety of alternate realities (in much the same way as a "Method" actor would handle his or her role). The images are, at times, so starkly in contrast with the nature of the characters as one has come to know them through the animé that they may well bring a smile of amusement to the viewer's face. Visions of Misato playfully climbing a Honda bike or of Rei and Asuka affectionately interacting with each other, for instance, appear so gloriously "out of character" as to verge on the hilarious. However, such images are perfectly consonant with the existential message conveyed by both the closing portion of of the TV show and by the movie End of Evangelion, where it is proposed that the world is what we make of it and that parallel visions of reality might therefore coexist. The variety of moods conveyed by Der Mond's pictures results from its inclusion not only of character sketches and model sheets explicitly created for the animé but also of ancillary drawings and paintings executed for the Evangelion manga and graphic novel, doujinshi publications, trading cards, telephone cards, calendars, illustrations for laserdisc releases and CDs, and movie programmes (amongst other categories). The sheer range of sources from which the visuals contained in Der Mond derive makes the book a priceless addition to the shelves of any committed animation, comic-book and ultimately art lover.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is a Master of his art........2004-06-08
I really enjoyed this book even though it doesn't really have many words in it at all. I really like the art for Evangelion and also the other series in here as well. I also found out that Yoshiyuki also did a few album covers for some famous American singer. This book features the art of Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Wings of Hominese, and a two more I am not very sure about. This book is just a must have for anyone who likes anime and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. I absolutely love his work because of the way it is portrayed on paper with cg, and water color. Not only that it is also because I have something that is from one of my favorite series (Eva). He is a great big insparation to me and I know what the truck I am talking about because I am a fellow Anime artist as well.

Sadamoto, true Grace through Art.......2002-06-01
Given one glance through this book, otaku or not, you'll find yourself immersed in this man's art! Not to be underestimated, and most importantly, to be appreciated by all, this book gives new meaning to the term Art Book.
Beautiful Angels.......2002-04-11
The artwork of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is simply amazing to behold. One cannot help but be moved by it. Even Eric Clapton, who'd never seen Sadamoto's anime designs, was impressed, and asked Sadamoto to design the cover to his Pilgrim album, the art for which is found in this very collection.
It's gorgeous renderings of his work from Evangelion, Nadia, and Wings of Honneamaise, as well as some original pieces created for this collection.
It's a beautiful collection, well worth picking up.
Amazing.......2002-01-09
Wow! Almost every single page has a full-color, full-page painting. No tiny thumbnails, no rough sketches, and very few works that spread across the spine. Among art books (whether English or Japanese), this is very rare. A majority of the pieces focus on Evangelion, but they are so beautiful that anyone could appreciate them even if they had never heard of Evangelion. The other works, on series like Nadia and Fatal Fury, are just as nice. The large format makes it even easier to admire. I own over 150 illustration-art books in several languages, and "Der Mond" is definitely on my essentials list.
We are very lucky that an artbook as great as "Der Mond" has been published in English, at a reasonable price. Be sure to pick this one up before it goes out of print.
Book Description
In this beautifully illustrated biography, Mark Twain’s adventures as a young boy come to life. Before Samuel Clemens became a famous author, he enjoyed one of the longest childhoods in history. From playing hooky in Hannibal, Missouri, to piloting steamboats on the Mississippi River, Mark Twain’s adventures as a youth influenced his entire life and figured prominently in his writing. Focusing on the first half of Clemens’s life, this book will be enjoyed by longtime Twain devotees--and by those who seek a colorful introduction to the ever-popular author and his works.
Customer Reviews:
The story of how young Sam Clemens became Mark Twain.......2004-09-09
The cover illustration of "A Brilliant Streak: The Making of Mark Twain" shows the familiar visage of a white haired Twain, decked out in a white shirt, white tie and white jacket. However, young readers who check out this juvenile biography of the great writer by Kathryn Lasky, illustrated by Barry Moser, will discover that it stops telling his story well before Samuel Clemens becomes the famous figure on the front cover. In doing so Lasky makes good use of the what Twain wrote on the last page of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," where he pointed out that a history of a boy has to stop before it becomes the history of a man.
"A Brilliant Streak" begins with Clemens being born the night Halley's comet streaked across the sky in 1835 and ends with him dying the day after it returned seventy-five years later. But the climax of Lasky's story comes when "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was printed in 1865 and Mark Twain became known as the Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope. Getting to the point is, in Lasky's words, the story of "one of the longest childhoods in history." It was only when fame found the boy who had become Mark Twain that he had to grow up fast.
The boy who became the legendary Mark Twain was, like his famous creation Tom Sawyer, interested in exploring haunted caves and dreaming of finding a hidden cache of pirate's gold. Lasky shows how playing hooky in Hannibal, Missouri, piloting steamboats on the Mississippi River, and other adventures from Twain's youth not only influenced his life but figured prominently in the books he would come to write. Underscored in the narrative is the idea that the vivid imagination and knack for manipulating the truth that often got young Sam Clemens into trouble were the same factors that made his such a great storyteller.
There are other books that will tell the story of what happened when Mark Twain became the world famous writer of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court." If young readers want to do the proverbial read more about it there is a list of books about Mark Twain (and select books by the author as well) in the back of this book. Of course, the best advice I can give you is to read those books Twain wrote first before you go on to learn more about the man who wrote them. The greatest line in American literature is found in "Huckleberry Finn" and if there is one thing you should do with regards to the life and works of Mark Twain it is read that classic American novel and discover it for yourself.
A Brilliant Review.......2000-05-08
This book was a very good book. It tells most of the things you need to know about Mark Twain, and it tells them in an interesting way. The only problem with using this book to write a report about Mark Twain's life is that it doesn't include some things that you might need to know. For example, it doesn't say the school he went to (which was John Dawson school). It also doesn't say too much about his children or wife. But it does tell a lot of good details, even little ones, about his life. I think this is a good book if you want to learn about Mark Twain or write a report about him.

Excellent resource.......2007-06-25
My grandma originally owned a copy of this book and regularly noted sightings of interesting/rare species. I bought my own copy several years ago and it has proved quite useful. The most interesting example was a Java Sparrow sighted in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I couldn't find out what it was from searching around online, but looking in the back of this field guide, under foreign/introduced species, there it was.
Quality Through and Through.......2005-10-11
I received this book as a gift and have used it constantly. I keep it on my window sill during the feeding season to identify the visiters to my feeder. The book's size and physical construction are excellent. As someone who is a novice it seems to be very comprehensive on the subject matter.
The birder's bible.......2005-07-19
Even when I lived in the city, I liked to feed and watch the birds (mainly sparrows and pigeons). Now that we live up in the woods, we're in bird paradise. Using this Peterson Field Guide for "Eastern Birds" plus a good pair of binoculars for visual identifications, and the "Birding by Ear Eastern/Central" CDs (Richard K. Walton and Robert W. Lawson) I've identified 42 species of birds in just over a month, as a casual observer for the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II project.
I have other bird books, but it is Peterson's Field Guide that I use most frequently. Roger Tory Peterson's 'system' "is based on patternistic drawings with arrows that pinpoint the key field marks." You don't have to have the bird in hand in order to make an identification. In addition to 136 full-color plates of Eastern birds (male, female, and immature, or summer and winter plumage if they differ markedly), there are also 390 three-color maps (first introduced in the 1980 edition).
The maps are absolutely essential for an amateur like me. If I've narrowed down a blurry little gray bird to X and Y, and Y never makes it north of the Mason-Dixon Line, I can be pretty certain that the bird is X. Here's an actual example on the utility of the maps: I was trying to distinguish a trilling song that could either belong to the Swamp Sparrow, the Pine Warbler, or the Northern Junco. We do see Juncos at our feeders in the winter, but this is July and according to Peterson's map, the Juncos spend the summer north of here, mostly in Canada. So I've narrowed the trill down to the Swamp Sparrow or the Pine Warbler (actually I'm positive we've got both as I've made tentative visual identifications. It makes sense since we live in the Pine Barrens which is dotted with numerous swamps).
This book begins with a generalized introduction to identifying birds by shape, distinctive features and behavior. Physically, it is tightly bound and just the right size to slip into a backpack. The pages are glossy and 'relatively' waterproof if you wipe them quickly dry. There is even a 'life list' up front where you can check off the birds you have seen.
Don't go birding without it.
Excellent beginner book for myself and my sister........1999-04-26
The Peterson field Guide to Eastern American Birds turned out to be the best birding book I've ever read. The book was well thought out and had the format that we needed in our suburban environment. The illustrations were concise and made identifying the birds extremely easy. We have a large population of Red-Winged Blackbirds and Mourning Doves, and its great to actually know what in the world we were looking at. It was great!
Excellent guide to identification of birds........1998-05-13
This is the best of the field guides for the amature birder in my opinion. I purchased a guide that had actual photos of birds in their habitats, thinking it would be the best, but it definately was not as good or as easy to use as the Peterson field guide. If you are looking for a good all around field guide to keep near your binoculars, this one is my pick.
Book Description
This guide includes all 39 species of North American hawks and other diurnal raptors, including eagles, falcons, and vultures. Color paintings and photographs show each species in various color morphs and plumages, which are aso described in detail.

A Field Guide to Hawks Of America.......2006-03-22
This is a fantastic book! I use it myself to identify the different Hawks we see. Thank You.
Quality Study.......2002-12-19
This book is not only informitive but the photos and diagrams are high quality like the paper it is printed on.
If you love birds of prey like me , get this book.
A must have book for a serious birder.......2002-08-07
I consider the Second Edition of the Peterson Filde Guide to the hawks of North America as a must have for any serious birder. The book is well laid out. It has a great set of new color paintings to illustrate the various plumages of the hawks and supplements these by new color photos. Excellent field marks are given for each species. Some of them are new to me. The paintings are clear and sharp and illustrate the field marks needed to identify each bird. The book illustrates how to identify the birds both flying and perched. It is well written and easy to use. I think so highly of the book that it is a required text in addition to the Sibley Guide for an advanced wildlife identification course I teach.
thorough reference.......2001-08-06
This book certainly lives up to the standards of other peterson guides which I keep handy all the time. Hawks can be tricky identifying so I use this book in tandem with The Photographic Guide to North American Raptors. These two books together make a great set
Don't be fooled!.......2001-04-04
This book is not all that other reviewers have made it to be. The plates are often vague and marginally helpful in field identification. This may be an ok first guide, but birders should look elsewhere for raptor identification tips!
Book Description
Hawk and eagle watching is an increasingly popular birding activity. Special knowledge is required, however, and this lavishly photographed, full-color book provides all you need to know in the Uninted States or Canada. The second part of the book focuses on the detailed species-by-species descriptions.
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures but casual information.......2004-11-11
There are a lot of great pictures and the writing about increase of ospreys and general life history is good. Sometimes the information is sparse, for example, he mentions osprey "Colonies", but they are not colonial like seabirds or wading birds. A distribution map of wintering range and breeding range would have helped. There are occasional anthropomorphisms, such as "ospreys are relatively taciturn as they go about the business of providing for their family". Under his chapter on "Osprey and you" it should have been mentioned that permits are usually needed to remove osprey nests, and also fishermen can assist by making sure tangled fishing lines are removed.
A Guide to the World's Best Arial Fisherman.......2000-06-10
Unlike the Bald Eagle and other hawks, there is not much available outside of Scientific papers on these unique birds. This book, published in 1997 fills a needed void, and covers the natural history of this breed. As is well known due to the effects of DDT (which has been banned for many years), this species in particular was scarce and endangered for a long time. The Osprey is now making a strong come-back and is showing an astonishing adaptability to co-exist with man. Here in Florida, I have seen them build nests on metal signs over the freeways near water, and showing every sign of thriving. Illustrating this text are lush color photographs of these birds - soaring, fishing, nest building, raising young, courtship, etc. In the text you will learn how the Osprey enjoys the highest success rate of all the fishing raptors, and their fishing technique is discussed at length from beginning to end. Migration, courtship, vocalization, rearing of young, it's all here. The effects of man and development are also examined, competition from other birds, etc. This is a great book on these fabulous fishermen, definitely, a must buy! When you look up in the sky and see the characteristic "M" shape of the soaring Osprey's wings you will have a richer understanding and new appreciation for these noble creatures.

Book Description
The Limits of Independence explains how freedom of action is limited by both a tightening net of interdependence between countries and by the rules which the "international society of states" has put in place. After setting out the general framework of restraint imposed on states, Adam Watson details attempts to limit national sovereignties from Napoleon to the European Union, including along the way discussions of how the many ex-colonial states have found their independence limited by their inability to provide strategic security or economic well-being.

in International Relations..........2001-01-08
Reviewed in International Relations...
This penetrating littlebook raises questions which belonged until very recently to the realmof the unthinkable. Its point of departure is that the state - or atleast nearly all states - is neither independent nor sovereign in thecommon meaning of these terms and should not pretend to be. AdamWatson does not suppose that the state is about to disappear or that aworld government is either imminent or desirable. His concern is theadaptation of the idea and status of the state to the realities andneeds of today and tomorrow. These needs emerge in his concludingchapters as the imperatives of peace, prosperity and standards ofcivilized behaviour: these being the goods which the state exists todeliver. Adam Watson's rare range of historical erudition andpersonal experience give his analysis and prescriptions a driveequalled by few.
The state as we know it is a European product whichhas proved to be one of Europe's most acceptable exports. Europeanstates have always displayed considerable diversity and inequality butthey have for several centuries formed a recognizable category byvirtue of certain common features, chief among them territorialdefinition and legal sovereignty. In the present century the number ofstates in the world - and therewith this diversity and inequality -has been enormously increased by, first, nationalism and the principleof self-determination in Europe and, secondly, the decolonization ofAsia and Africa. There are now nearly 200 states in the world, some ofthem very small, many of them very poor and others (of all sizes) illgoverned and therefore dangerous to their citizens and theirneighbours. This last feature is not new. It has characterized theEuropean state from its first appearance. It is also the principalcause of dissatisfaction with the unfettered power of the state in itsexternal relations and of state governments in their domesticaffairs. The state has many virtues but it often does more harm thangood and even more often it is exceedingly and harmfullyincompetent.
Powerful states have always interfered in the internalaffairs of lesser states, restrained more by practicalities than bypolitical theory or legal sanction. But whereas in earlier times itwas supposed that states ought not to interfere in this way, today itis thought that perhaps sometimes they should. A comparison of theCovenant of the League of Nations with the Charter of the UnitedNations illustrates this shift. Although article 2 (7) of the Charterspecifically upholds the older view, other articles are renderedvacuous if article 2 (7) is strictly interpreted. Nor has it been, albeit that attempts to square this circle have been ill-starred andclumsy (e.g. safe havens for Kurds in Iraq). In the last few years theIMF, having adopted the role of physician to national economies in amess, has made its aid conditional not only on certain economicremedies but also on the establishment of good government - by whichit means more democracy as understood in the West and evidenced bymulti-party elections (which may too easily be turned by fraud andforce to undemocratic ends). Earlier this year outside intervention inSouth East Asia's economic affairs was loudly opposed by nationalleaders as an illicit infringement of sovereignty but then acceptedbecause it was too glaringly obvious that the states in trouble hadproved themselves strikingly incompetent in regulating the economicgrowth which they had vaunted and enjoyed. In some Latin Americancountries the state in effect shares power with criminal organizationswhich displace the legitimate government in wide areas and evenprovide the inhabitants with the services which governments aresupposed to provide. And other examples of governments not in controlin their own houses are plentiful. The point is that outsideintervention, with its corollary of legitimate infringement of theabsolute independence of the state, has come to be seen as a goodthing in some circumstances. These circumstances are mistily definedand the practicalities of intervention are riddled with pitfalls. Thisbook seeks to point a way towards diminishing the confusion and thepitfalls.
An international order consisting of states may be eitheranarchic in the sense of no-rule-of-law between states or subject to adegree of dominance or hegemony by one or more superiorstates. Anarchy, dangerously unpredictable, has become even more sowith the proliferation of states and their ever closer contacts withone another. The alternative is hegemony - the surrender of someauthority in order to avoid a Hobbesian nightmare. As Watsonemphasizes, hegemony is not a simple concept but a variable resultantof the forces along a continuum, from a Napoleonic or Hitlerianabsolute (dominion) to a more measured relationship like that betweena conglomerate corporation and its subsidiaries. These relations areset by law and political culture as well as sheer power. Allianceshave immemorially worked that way and in the modern world theinternational system rivetted together by economics and communicationstechnology is no different. Specifically, it depends today on how theUnited States of America regards and treats the United Nations. AdamWatson believes that the restraints on any hegemonical power havebecome much stronger in our time. That is the main point in thisbook. It is the view of a hardheaded, intelligent, professional man -not the view of a romantic optimist. It is comforting, coming fromsuch a source, but as I stand poised to endorse it I hesitate. Overthe last decade or two the United States has seemed to me moreinclined to make a virtue of going it alone with or without satellitesthan to moderate its judgement of ambitions in the light of thejudgements of others. The test of leadership lies not in thewillingness to give a lead but in deciding what to do when your leadis disapproved. What impresses me most about the United States is notits great power (others have had that) but its extraordinaryhistory. For most of its life it has existed in a vast area withoutanother state or consequence in sight. It is difficult to think of anyother state of which this is true. China, yes; but certainly not anystate in Europe where the horizon is cluttered with states not veryfar away. It may be too much to expect any Superpower to accept in itsheart or its policies any serious limits to its independence. Nonehas. The locus of great power has shifted away from Europe to NorthAmerica and may, some predict, shift again in a century or so toChina. Do these shifts augur a more civilized handling of great powerby the giants of the next age than by Napoleon, Hitler et hoc genusomne? This is a short book about a very big question, highlyintelligent, carefully distilled. It provides crumbs for comfort buthow big those crumbs are none can yet say.

Book Description
This book brings together key features of the toxicology and occupational hazards of pesticides and the way their use is regulated in the main trading regions of the world. There are chapters on each of the main groups of insecticides, namely organochlorines, anticholinesterases and pyrethrins and pyrethroids. The book also covers fungicides and herbicides, as well as more specialised agents such as microbial pesticides. The risks and hazards to humans are considered, both occupational and through the consumption of contaminated foodstuffs. Additionally, clinical aspects of pesticide poisoning are discussed.
The possibility of harm from pesticide exposure has led to the development of national and international regulations governing the application of pesticides. The book describes the regulatory systems in three major economic areas: the North American Free Trade Area (USA, Canada and Mexico), the European Union and Japan.
This book should be of interest to all individuals working on the development and application of pesticides anywhere in the world. All those involved in the manufacture, regulation and toxicology of pesticides should also benefit from reading this book.
