I really liked this book. It is one of several that I purchased after coming back from Tanzania, and I have recommended it to others. The author is straight-forward about his situation, so I wouldn't recommend it to children under, say, 12, but it is quite moving as an adult book, though he wrote it for young people.

Facing the Lion is the amazing TRUE story of a Maasai boy growing up in Kenya. I first heard about this National Geographic book from my son's 8th grade world history teacher - it was on a summer reading list. B-O-R-I-N-G - right? Well think again. You will not be able to put this book down! The boy grows up tending his family's herd of extremely valuable cows - and that means standing guard at night when lions literally leap from the bush to decimate the livestock. The lessons that the boy learns from incredible adventure, adversity, and challenge in his African upbringing only serve to give him the drive, determination, and power to succeed at HARVARD. My husband read the book on a plane and now uses a number of examples in his consulting practice. A FUN read and a WONDERFUL book for ANYBODY - teens to adult.

Narrated in the voice of a child as he grows up in a Maasai village, this is a quick, easy-to-read book for learning a lot about the Maasai culture (ie; before traveling to Africa, or for general interest). It was recommended by my travel agent and, while very simple, I will agree it is very well worth the read!

This title is a must for educators of young children. The illustrations are beautiful and the language is understandable even for the youngest of school children. Reading and discussing this book with a classroom will help children discover that differences are what make us special and differences are a reason for celebration. I was fortunate enough to receive this as a prize in a local contest for my kids; they love it! The text, the images, and the meaning are all wonderful. It promotes tolerance without the heavy-handed approach that some books take by simply presenting the reality that children are all different, and yet are bound by love and youthful innocence, and that *that* is a beautiful thing. I highly recommend this book.

Recently a close friend with mixed race toddlers appealed to me for advice on how to respond to her children's questions about color and difference. She lives in 'monocultural' rural Spain and thought that based upon my own experiences I could share some insight. We chatted for a bit, and then after we hung up I started to search through the old forgotten children's books belonging to my (now teenage) sons for appropriate ones to send her. My boys were happy to part with the picture and early years storybooks I'd found until,that is, I showed them this book 'All the Colors of the Earth'. Individually they both said a categorical "No way!" to the idea of parting with it, and I was both shocked at the level of affection they held for this gorgeous but seemingly discarded book, and secretly proud that in their new worlds of computer games and Manga and loud music that they still harbored a secret place of childhood memories where this fabulous book holds such a special place. My eldest surprised me further by speaking of wanting to share it with his own children in the future-imagine! So I had to buy my friend her own copy and have it shipped to us in the UK, so that we could give it as a present when they came to visit us. The moist-eyed smiles and gasps of delight that both she and her partner gave while flicking through the pages said it all. Looks like yet another family has an heirloom for future generations.

I'm tired of the fluffy books about color. Here is some concrete studies on color use in different cultures with relation to architectural color choices. The photos are meticulously color balanced, the natural hues in buildings are inspiring and life affirming. The book is so multi-faceted that it could have other titles as well, "Color in Geometry" and "Homes with Soul" would be appropriate. The book deserves a cloth cover, much like Christopher Alexanders opus "The Theory of Life. This is a book you will come back to when you need to recharge your soul with the beauty of man and nature in harmony. I smiled a lot while looking through the book. What a delightful book. At first I was a skeptic, wondering if it wasnt a long reach to try and establish a connection between the Early American experiences of Blacks to the burgeoning masses emerging in Europe. But lo and behold I was convinced. The author does a brilliant job of taking us through three different periods of American history and tieing the similarities together. Whether you are a serious student of history or race relations this book is a must read.

Mosconi and Foge are right on. They have provided an excellent and unique book for the adoption triad. This is an amazing book for birthparents and a terrific guide to help them through the adoption process. Mosconi and Foge are knowledgeable, informative and true advocates for birthparents, adoptive families and the open adoption process. This book is a 10 and I would recommend it to both birthparents and adoptive parents. There is no other adoption book like it, it is unique and very easy to read. Thank you Mosconi and Foge for making a difference in the wonderful world of adoption.
The Third Choice.......2002-12-22
Birthmothers get over their grief in a year? Get real!! It's too bad these two authors (who just happen to be social workers) didn't get it right! That part of the book is very misleading for those contemplating adoption; it takes us back to the Dark Ages (i.e. most of the last century) when birthmothers were told they would get over it. (Most didn't!) For another slant on adoption, I suggest the book written by Merry Bloch Jones. Also the book by Gediman and Brown. A biography on this subject is Search for Paul David.
The info on grief is utter nonsense and incorrect.......2001-08-16
The book starts out okay and I had some hopes for it. However it breaks down completely whenever the author deals with the issue of Birth Parent grief. Birth Parent grief and pain doesn't decrease or disappear after a year...it's a lifelong process that never ends. Some women do become overwhelmed with grief the first year and turn to emotional numbness as a temporary way to find relief from the pain....but this emotional defense only lasts so long...eventually the pain & grief resurfaces in their life in the forms of: depression, anger, low self-esteem, etc. It's a shame that the authors didn't talk to any experienced Birth Parents about the true course and direction of grief. They took the easy way out and claimed that the pain goes away in a year...comforting for adoptive parents to hear...but none of my Birth Parent friends would agree with this claim!! Read books written by real Birth Mothers if you want to understand how wrong this book is about adoption loss & grief.

As a birthmother I found this book very helpful and even comforting. There are no words to say how wonderfully the authors captured the difficulty of the decision to place a child for adoption nor the greatness of the openness that they talk about in the book.
a must-read for women contemplating adoptive placement.......1999-06-06
While would-be adoptive parents have many books to help them in their journey, I have seen very few that address the trials facing a woman who is contemplating an adoptive placement. This book is an excellent resource for a woman in that position. Written by two adoption social workers, the book covers all aspects of an adoptive placement: deciding whether adoption is the right choice, choosing the type of adoption, finding the right adoptive parents, getting through the pregnancy and birth, and processing the grief and loss. No book can replace counseling, but this one would be the next best thing for those who refuse counseling (and a great adjunct for those who are getting counseling). I would also recommend it for waiting adoptive parents, because it will help them to better understand what birth parents go through.
My only nit with the book is that it tries to cover a lot of ground without getting too long, resulting in fairly shallow treatment of some topics that deserve more depth.
I am an adoptive parent seeking to adopt again, and I will try to make sure that any prospective birth mother we work with reads this book!

This is a compendium of the recent research literature on mathematical methods in structural mechanics. Judging by the bibiograpghy, the author himself has contributed nothing or next to nothing to this subject, leaving the informed reader wondering why he chose to write this particular book. The expert reader familiar with the literature will notice the author's overly strong reliance on the literal texts of research papers, to the extent that the style and even notation vary from one section to another. Thus the book reads like a superficial transcription of the work of others. The author has made little or no effort to synthesize the literature into a coherent exposition. This is a particular disappointment given the author's strong reputation as a researcher. Thus, what emerges is a rather disjoint and haphazard review of the works of those papers which the author finds appealing, without any sign of a common theme nor any hint of discernment. The book stands in stark contrast to a number of excellent and thoughtful monographs written by those who have actually contributed to the subject. Those who know the author's excellent research papers in other fields of Mechanics will feel sorely disppointed.

This book is very expensive and contains classical theories mixed with a lot of useless mathematics; absolutely not recomended to everybody.
