The quintessential New England barn -- photogenic, full of character, and framed by flaming autumn foliage -- is an endangered species. Of some 30,000 barns in Vermont alone, nearly a thousand a year are lost to fire, collapse, or bulldozers. Thomas Durant Visser's field guide to the barns, silos, sugar houses, granaries, tobacco barns, and potato houses of New England is an attempt to document not just their structure but their traditions and innovations before the surviving architectural evidence of this rich rural heritage is lost forever.
A recognized authority on historic barn preservation, Visser has combed the six-state region for representative barns and outbuildings, and 200 of his photographs are reproduced here. The text, which includes accounts from 18th- and 19th-century observers, describes key architectural characteristics, historic uses, and geographic distribution as well as specific features like timbers and frames, sheathings, doors, and cupolas. Where Is Southern New England?.......2007-03-12
Despite many mistakes in the layout and composition of this little book, the author has done an admirable job of researching and presenting a dauntingly diverse subject, except for the inadequate photography. One imagines him spending many hours taking and cataloguing and captioning the numerous photos, which are essential to understanding the subject and its details. Too often, however, the camera is too far away or the photos are reduced to such small size that the reader comes away with an impression, rather than a clear idea. It's evident the book suffers from budgetary constraints, and in this instance those constraints have hurt badly.
A final complaint -- the title is misleading. Despite the inclusion of a few Connecticut tobacco barns, this is a guide to NORTHERN New England barns. Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine barns are well represented.

Having just purchased an old barn, I found precious few resources to assist in gleaning a history. Visser's book was concise, informative, and a pleasure to read. It provides valuable insight to the development of agricultural styles, and valuable clues to dating the agrarian landscape. Excellent source.

The outbuildings of rural dwellings have customarily received less attention than the dwellings themselves. The fields of architectural history and historic preservation have long focused on dwellings, for such reasons as their sheer abundance and the fact that they may have been repositories of the fanciest and trendiest architectural detail. But visitors to rural areas will often find that a farmstead's ensemble of outbuildings may overshadow the dwelling in size, number, or visual prominence. The outbuildings reflect past activities of people and animals, and connect the dwelling to the system of fields, fences, driveways, and other farmscape elements.
Thomas D. Visser, Associate Professor and Interim Director of the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Vermont, recognizes that barns and other outbuildings are far more important than as mere picturesque elements of the rural landscape. From the massive barn to the lowly privy, "each has a story to tell." In his Field Guide to New England Barns and Farm Buildings, Visser provides "clues for deciphering the many layers of history spread over the rural landscape... to help observers... realize the wonderful insights that can spring from an understanding of the evolution of our rural heritage."
Visser's book may be used two ways, as a reference book and as a handy, portable field guide. It stands alone as a good concise history of New England farm buildings with an understandable concentration on barns, the most necessary structure of a farmstead other than the dwelling. The specific fieldwork for this volume took two years and was concentrated in areas preselected for their relevance. The fieldwork not only made possible this excellent guide to identifying, understanding, and appreciating farm buildings, but recorded a dwindling cultural resource. Visser has for years encouraged the preservation of barns, building interest among their owners. This book, it is hoped, by increasing awareness of these often neglected structures, will advance the cause of their preservation.

Superb Artwork.......2005-10-05
The cartoons in this collection are superbly drawn, with excellent detail. Each cartoon combines great artwork with biting comment.
Much of the material covered covers "W", Cheney and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The artist really hits the mark (with "W" there is a lot of scope). It would be hard to pick a favorite from this collection. The drunken America West pilots would have to be my pick from the non "W" material.
Editorial cartoons can have a limited shelf life, by nature they are a snapshot in time, encapsulating humor and comment. Only the very best can outlast the immediacy of their subject matter. There are numerous cartoons in this superb collection that should stand the test of time.

Very highly recommended for browsing, Code Red is an impressive collection of newspaper editorial cartoons written and drawn with a sharp sting by editorial cartoonist Ed Hall. From a motorist shown hooking up an IV from his arm to his gas tank in order successfully fill up his car; to an overeater claiming "Hey, I can quit anytime I want" with regard to french fries that have a health warning printed on them; these cartoons are searing, compelling, and cutting-edge snapshots of cutting-edge social, political, and cultural realities.

Knowing Ed Hall personally for over ten years I have enjoyed his unique point of view into the world of local and national politics. His gift for putting 1,000 words into a single picture is demonstrated with each and every cartoon he draws. He doesn't pull any punches with his work giving each side equal space on his pallet. His first book "Code Red" clearly shows off some of his best work to date. As time goes on and he publishes other books you'll never regret owning his first.

Code Red is a great book of work. Ed Hall creates his cartoons with more than content in mind. His attention to detail is superb. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the subjects. I hope he continues to put out more books in the future.

In 1926, while a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune, Herbert Asbury, great-great-nephew of Francis Asbury, the first American Bishop of the Methodist Church, submitted a chapter of his profane work-in-progress, an almost spiteful memoir of his boyhood in the Ozark town of Farmington, Missouri, to H.L Mencken’s American Mercury magazine. Mencken published “Hatrack,” the story of the town’s prostitute, in the April issue. The Mercury was then banned in Boston at the incitement of J. Frank Chase, the head of the New England Watch and Ward Society, who called the story “bad, vile, raw stuff.” Mencken was arrested selling the magazine to Chase on Boston Common in a stunt designed to provoke the free-speech trials that followed. In its restrained, but unrelenting attack on religious bigotry, irrationality, and hypocrisy, the book that was published soon thereafter retains its transgressive power today. Its taunting title, playing on Booker T. Washington’s early-century bestseller Up from Slavery, gives an idea of what Asbury thought he had escaped. In his mocking humor and plain-spun language, used to evoke a bygone South suffocating in its fear of pleasure and damnation, Asbury reveals his debt to another son of Missouri, Mark Twain.

In the midst of eldercare with our parents, I've read and re-read Gail's book. Through many and diverse experiences, she shares with unusual candor, humor and insight the pain and the joys of caring for parents. Book Description
The F-4 Phantom II was the USAF workhorse fighter-bomber for the Linebacker campaign, which eventually saw US forces withdraw from Vietnam 'with honour' in 1973. This book covers the F-4 attacks on numerous targets in North Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi and Haiphong, as well as its engagements with Vietnamese MiG-19s and MiG-21s hell-bent on defending the north from 'Yankee air pirates'. The USAF's only ace crew, which scored their five kills during 1972, is also covered in a book containing many detailed photographs, a large proportion of which haven't been published before.

Noted aviation author Peter Davies concludes his two-volume history of USAF Vietnam War MiG killers with this volume covering the 1972-73 Linebacker I and II campaigns.
The Air Force's record over North Vietnam in 1972 and 1973 was spotty at best: 3 Air Force crewmen made ace and 48 MiGs were downed in all. However 24 USAF aircraft fell to MiGs and many kills were lost due to poorly performing missiles and poorly trained aircrew. Unlike their Navy counterparts, Air Force brass failed to learn from mistakes made in the 1965-68 period and the result was a 2-to-1 kill ratio in 1972/73. By contrast, Navy F-4 drivers, during this same period, racked up a 12-to-1 ratio. (Readers should check out Osprey's companion volumes on Navy
F-4 MiG killers).
Davies' book is typical Osprey fare - jampacked with first-person narratives, rare photographs and great color profiles by Jim Laurier. In short, a good introduction to the subject and great value for the price!

Many works have been penned on the Buffalo Soldiers, however, few reach the quality of Dr. Schubert's. Frank tells the story of the Buffalo Soldier Medal of Honor winners from 1870-1898. He tells the story as one would tell a family story. He has a knowledge of the Buffalo Soldiers that has not been seen since Bill Lecke. The narrative is most interesting. His style is extremely readable. The reader finds himself saying "just one more page before I put it down." This book is a must read for a student of the Buffalo Soldiers of military history of the period. The causal reader will find this work packed full of knowledge and very readable. Dr Schubert has done another bang-up job
A must-read for anyone interested in the Old West........1999-04-15
This is an extremely moving and thought-provoking book. For modern Americans, living in our more cynical age, it seems impossible to believe and a hopelessly naive thing that former slaves and long-oppressed men would have volunteered to fight for this nation--but they did, in large numbers (enough to field four all-black Regular Army regiments) and with remarkable heroism . Dr. Schubert captures the spirit of the Buffalo Soldiers' incredible bravery and the harshness of their lives--and deaths--in a remarkable manner. Although it is a "must-read" for anyone interested in the Old West and the lives of soldiers on the frontier, this book is also a must-read for anyone interested in African-American history, general U.S. history or anyone who loves a tale of adventure and character: it encompasses some incredible (and very well-told ) tales of suffering and bravery in a manner that will move the reader alternatively to anger, to tears, to pride and to amazement. One can also read this book as a cautionary tale on the wages of heroism: many of the Buffalo Soldiers who won the Medal of Honor had lives afterwards that could only be called tragic in the extreme. Although our nation has finally begun to awake to the sacrifices of these men over a century ago, in their own time, they were often the "forgotten soldiers." Dr. Schubert's book, however, now helps to give the Buffalo Soldiers the credit they have long been overdue. It is a marvelous book.

Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894) was a polymath of dazzling intellectual range and energy. Renowned for his co-discovery of the second law of thermodynamics and his invention of the ophthalmoscope, Helmholtz also made many other contributions to physiology, physical theory, philosophy of science and mathematics, and aesthetic thought. During the late nineteenth century, Helmholtz was revered as a scientist-sage--much like Albert Einstein in this century.
David Cahan has assembled an outstanding group of European and North American historians of science and philosophy for this intellectual biography of Helmholtz, the first ever to critically assess both his published and unpublished writings. It represents a significant contribution not only to Helmholtz scholarship but also to the history of nineteenth-century science and philosophy in general.

A Barely Remembered Scientist.......2004-02-24
If the average university student has heard of Helmholtz today, it might be in the context of a Helmholtz coil, which is used in physics to generate a uniform magnetic field at its centre. Yet, in a larger context, he has been largely forgotten, despite his vast contributions across many sciences of the 19th century. Perhaps it speaks to the finite size of a curriculum and the onrushing progress of science.
This book attempts to redress that ignorance. It gives a well written description of his many experiments and writings. Very readable, without requiring specialised knowledge of its fields. The level of explanation is comparable to that of Scientific American. What is also neat is how the book fits him into his time, describing the cultural milieu of Germany and its scientific strivings.
