Book Description

More than any of their contemporaries, Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are challenging the boundaries between architecture and art. Natural History explores that challenge, examining how the work of this formidable pair has drawn upon the art of both past and present, and brought architecture into dialogue with the art of our time. Echoing an encyclopedia, this publication reflects the natural history museum structure of the exhibition which it accompanies, organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Models and projects by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as by other artists, are structured around six thematic portfolios that suggest an evolutionary history of the architects' work: Appropriation & Reconstruction, Transformation & Alienation, Stacking & Compression, Imprints & Moulds, Interlocking Spaces, and Beauty & Atmosphere. Each section is introduced with a statement from Herzog, and more than 20 artists, scholars, and architects have contributed essays, including Carrie Asman, Georges Didi-Huberman, Kurt W. Forster, Boris Groys, Ulrike Meyer Stump, Peggy Phelan, Thomas Ruff, Rebecca Schneider, Adolf Max Vogt, and Jeff Wall.

A building is a building. It cannot be read like a book; it doesn't have any credits, subtitles or labels like pictures in a gallery. In that sense, we are absolutely anti-representational. The strength of our buildings is the immediate, visceral impact they have on a visitor. --Jacques Herzog

Edited by Philip Ursprung. Contributions by Fernando Romero, Carrie Asman, Boris Groys, Gernot Bohme, Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff, Alfred Richterich, Adolph Max Vogt, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Reinhold Hohl, Petros Koumoutsakos, Albert Lutz, Christian Muoeix, Hurzeler, Catherine, Rebecca Schneider and Remy Zaugg. Foreword by Phyllis Lambert. Introduction by Kurt W. Forster.

Hardcover, 480 pages, 300 color and 200 b&w illustrations

5 out of 5 stars art of H & DeM.......2007-03-16

H & DeM have always been influenced by art & you can even argue that their body of work could be an entire exhibiton. This book follows up some of their selected projects with interviews of the architects themselves as well as the collaborative artists. It does well to probe into theie unique process of design & actualization of their work. Jaques Herzog says that Art is roughly 20 years ahead of architecture. This vivid book clearly shows the great accomplishments by two men who are constantly trying to even up the odds between art & architecture through inspirations from the natural world.

5 out of 5 stars layers of history, time, artifacts, translated into architecture.......2006-06-03

I don't think this is an "object book" but a book in which herzog & de meuron want readers to understand their work like an archaelogical history. you cannot flip through it like an photographic architectural essay, but you really have to sit down, have a cup of coffee/tea, and really read the book, think about what they are saying, how other ideas such as art, history, materials, cultural, industrial changes, and etc. are interacting to their architectural process. certainly, they have the depth in their thoughts to publish a book that doesn't depend on photographs/architectural drawings. quite refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Herzog & De Meuron: Natural History.......2003-04-11

Another object book with content that matches the originality of the design. Herzog & De Meuron, the Basel-based architects, are best known for their art museums, but also for creating buildings that are works of art--even when the program is as mundane as a railroad signal box. This companion to the recent CCA exhibition is an anthology of interviews, stimulating essays by artists and clients, and pictures of objects that have inspired them, in addition to an illustrated catalogue of their 200 buildings and projects. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

    Book Description

The dramatic, expressionist work of Berlin-based artist Xenia Hauser intelligently captures the personal and social conflicts of both the artist and her subjects. With unflinching directness, she engages the viewer using radical color and aggressive brushstrokes. As we are drawn into Hausner's paintings, her characters reveal themselves with an abandon akin to the artist's bold and daring technique. Heart Matters showcases work that combines the energetic and unsettling style of such German artists as Otto Dix and Max Beckman with the warmth and subjective immediacy of figurative art. In portraying the emotional lives of her subjects with an attentive eye and heart, Hausner highlights the passion for love, desire, survival and knowledge that still exists within our fragmented and often cold and disorienting culture. Via her unique approach, Hausner offers an insight into the hopes and dreams of the people she paints, enabling us to see them as figures with a past, present and future--revealing, in the process, the truths and paradoxes inherent in her life and ours.

5 out of 5 stars Under the radar.......2006-10-20

This is the model for how an art book should look. Large format. Beautiful reproductions. Details of shown paintings. All in color. Many paintings shown. How I missed this book, I dont know. Interspersed within are numerous essays that do not go overboard with art speak. There are many sketches and photos shown giving a great understanding of the artists working meathod. Her ability to paint the figure goes beyond her unusual use of color. Really a wonderful book. This is the kind of book that will sell for hundreds when it is no longer in print. It is really to bad that there is not this kind of funding available to produce this kind of superior book for many of our contemporary figurative artists today.

      Book Description

This mournful but pleasing collection features many of the best photographs of bicycles locked to poles ever taken. Shot using an old-fashioned 35mm Nikon, the photos here follow in the tradition of John James Audubon, Bernd and Hilla Becher, the Peterson Field Guides, and The Observer's Book of Steam Locomotives.

Bicycles Locked to Poles began in early 2001, when a magenta arrow - spray-painted on the sidewalk by a representative of the electrical utility — pointed directly to the sadly bent, Dali-esque wheel of a bicycle on the photographer's street. Glassie passed by every day for months, until one day it was gone. He has been documenting bicycles locked to poles, bent, broken and otherwise, in and around his East Village neighborhood of New York ever since.

This volume presents a careful selection from Glassie's collection of over a thousand color photographs, as well as a graphical guide to present, damaged, and missing bicycle parts, and a quote from Marvin Minsky's The Society of Mind. Bicycles Locked to Poles is a rare treasury for anyone interested in bikes, poles, locks, or the forgotten artifacts of the urban landscape.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coffee Table Book.......2006-03-04

Big fan of McSweeney's, and even bigger fan of Bikes, so when I saw an ad for this book I ordered it. I absolutely love it. The photographs are insightfull. The neighborhood and space the bikes exist in are as interesting as the bikes themselves. The legend on the inside cover is a great touch, and the Marvin Minsky quote is one I will keep for good.

      5 out of 5 stars a moving collection.......2005-12-29

Bicycles Locked to Poles is a wonderful book to give to a friend or family member. It is artistic and understated. The way in which Mr. Glassie has sequenced the photographs gives the book real heart and poignancy. Mr. Glassie's focus on the small block radius of the East Village reminds of how much transpires and how much is easily forgotten in a city like New York.

2 out of 5 stars not so much.......2005-12-13

I was Really excited about this book- cool title, cool premise- until i got it & looked at it. the pictures are gritty, dark, and not in an artsy kind of way- and are all taken from the same height/angle. Instead of getting down & dirty & into his art, its as if the photographer didnt want to take a picture that would inconvience his walking. (i doubt new yorkers would look at you strange for squatting to take pics of a bike on the street?)
The coolest picture by far is on the cover, and its not really a wonder why they put it first. i bought it for a gift but after looking at it... maybe ill just frame the cover?

      5 out of 5 stars Beat-up bikes get a second life.......2005-12-10

New York City is a chaotic place. It's unforgiving and indifferent but alive with humanity and creative energy. The front lines of this daily struggle between the hopeful and harsh happen right here on the streets and sidewalks. Through bicycles locked to poles, Mr. Glassie captures the casualties of this struggle, showing us the relics of forgotten bikes overwhelmed by New York, yet physically bound to it. He's somehow found a tiny piece of every New Yorker's story and painted a portrait of how defeat can be a thing of beauty. And plus, lots of neat pics of banged-up bikes!

4 out of 5 stars bicycles locked to poles.......2005-09-13

The most poignant visual social commentary about the real struggle between evolution and intelligent design. Put another way: A humorous catalogue of the wear and tear of urban life...on bikes. The photos run the gamut: gritty, sad, cute, weird, witty, bare, depressing, poetic, and charming. Take it too seriously and you'll miss the point.

      Book Description

He turns 50 this year yet, oddly, he was married before his first birthday. He's been a television star and appeared in two major motion pictures. And now he is the focal point of his own daily comic strip. He is the man, the myth, the legend...the potato. Mr. Potato Head, one of America's all-time favorite toys, is fast becoming one of the most loved cartoons. Mr. Potato Head Unplugged is the first collection of the strip, which debuted in the summer of 2001. Mr. Potato Head, the comic strip, has a lot going for it: Not only does it feature a toy that's a member of the Toy Hall of Fame, but the cocreaters of the strip are legendary cartoonist Jim Davis and Garfield collaborator Brett Koth. Together, the two blend their humor-writing and artistic talents to create a strip that tips a hat - as well as a nose, a mustache, and a couple ears - to the classic situation comedy. Mr. Potato Head is not a lone spud. He lives with his wife, Mrs. Potato Head (but of course) and their little taters, 13-year-old Julienne and 10-year-old Chip. The four deal with such typical family follies as sibling rivalry, office issues, and chores, plus other unique challenges that come with being a large-headed tuber in the new millennium. Mr. P, as he's affectionately referred to by Davis, is a total couch potato when he's at home. His wife is a bit more ambitious as the author of her own gardening column, "Ask Mrs. P." Mr. Potato Head Unplugged is sure to sprout rib-tickling laughs with readers of all generations, from young children discovering this much-loved spud for the first time to baby boomers who remember the toy as the first one ever advertised on television.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars cute- but not usually very funny.......2004-08-29

The Mr. Potato Head comic is cute...it's sometimes funny, but when it is, it's more cute funny than anything else. I'm in the middle of this book now, and I was hoping for more. Some fans might love it, and I wanted to love it myself, but I don't. I just like it overall...and some of the strips are just completely unfunny. There are too many Dear Mrs. P comics- and none of these are very funny to me...the best ones are where Mr. Potato Head himself is the star of the 3 windowed story. Some of the jokes fall totally flat, and that was surprising to me, seeing as how it's a strip from Davis...and another guy I've never heard of before.

I wouldn't recommend buying this book, unless you happen to be in love with potato head...I'd get it at the library and enjoy what you will of it that way. It's not bad, but it's not great.

5 out of 5 stars Naked, raw emotion from one of the true greats.......2003-01-10

I'd say this was my favourite of all the Unplugged series, probably even surpassing the late Nirvana for pure, raw, naked emotion. Mr Potato Head was always a troubled artist, and at times, his heart-rending vocals give a terrible insight into what was to come, following this, one of his final public recordings. The passion with which he sings "Bake Me" is purely breathtaking, as is the rousing "Twas on the good Chip Venus". The only low point of this collection would be the truly awful "Starch Trekking (across the universe)" - and I doubt many would argue against me.

This book was a great read, especially for an Aussie, and provided a great look at 50's Australia. This book is autobiographical, and Hugh Lunn really know how to let us into his head, and he definitely isn't afraid to pull any punches. It is amazing to see how far we have come. With plenty of historical info, as well as a few good laughs, I recommend this book.

                        Book Description

This is the true story of a retired couple's search for an alternative lifestyle. They decided to purchase a motor home and try traveling full-time and were quickly converted to this non-traditional life of adventure. This book describes their first two years on the road (through small town America, historic cities, seaside villages, tourist destinations, national parks. . .) and the experiences that transformed them. Thoreau said, "We must awaken and stay awake not by mechanical means, but by a constant expectation of the dawn." Adopting this attitude, they learned that in one instant of pure attention, they could draw something inside themselves them changed them forever. This is not your typical travel book. It does not tell you where to go, where to stay, what to do, or where to eat. Rather, the reader experiences what it's like to live a life devoted to discovery - and learns that the richness of life comes not from outer achievement, but from Maslow's "peak experience" - the discovery of that thing that tells you about your relationship with the harmony of being.

This is a great little book that any traveler should read before starting out on a cross-country trek. They might just be inspired to travel some of the same highways and byways discussed within these pages. Book Description

Some atmospheric disturbances produce the kind of extreme weather events making the national and international new headlines on a regular basis. Just about everyone is interested in knowing more about hurricanes, typhoons and tornadoes. There is often confusion about whether or not they are the same thing and whether, for example, we can control these extremely violent phenomena. Thunder and lightning affect many people but how many of us understand what generates such massive electrical discharges and why they occur more at some times of year than at others? A popular addition to the Science Spectra Series, Weather Rage explains the origin and nature of different types of weather observed across many areas of the world and those that occur on different scales. Presenting an in-depth look at the main factors underlying weather, this book will be an extremely useful guide for all meteorology students and practitioners as well as a source of reference for all those with an interest in the weather.
