Book Description
As more and more people seek meaning in new forms of spiritual practice or renew their commitments to traditional religions, they are creating homes that reflect and enhance the spiritual component of their daily lives. This book provides an inspiring testament to the influence of spiritual practice on contemporary design. Here are Buddhist meditation rooms, personal shrines to Catholic saints, and altars to Santeria deities and the Virgin of Guadeloupe. Here are exquisitely decorated Sabbath tables as well as tables whose settings reflect the procession of the seasons. Here are private temples to creativity, memorials to beloved friends and family members, and offerings to Hindu gods. And here are shrines and sanctuaries enriched with the symbolism of many religions past and present. Imbued with personal content, all of these rooms offer comfort, accommodate ritual activity, and embrace the elements of nature. From collections of masks and icons to meditation gardens, from Chanukah Menorahs to Haitian drapos, the spiritual impulse in design draws from the world's religions and the history of art. Chapters on the "Evolution of Sacred Design" and "The Meaning of Sanctuary" provide a foundation for understanding the content of the home sanctuary. Chapters on "Rooms and Shrines," "Altars," and "Art and Artifacts" illustrate specific interpretations and applications. Whether abundantly decorated or austerely refined, the rooms pictured here lift up and enrich the soul. They are filled with meditative light, exalted imagery, soothing color, and symbolic meaning. 120 color photographs and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Sacred Book for the Home.......2006-12-21
An inspirational book that can help make your home a more peaceful place to live, work, and meditate in. I enjoyed looking at the photos and reading the text. I would ceretainly recommend buying a copy.
benissimo.......2006-11-15
This is one of my favorite books to look through. There are so many full color photographs of different altars and sacred spaces. I get so many ideas from this book. Its one of those books that you just pick up now and again for inspiriation. The author truly has the creative spark. My favorite are the photographs of the authors santeria shrines. The Orisha must be pleased with what the author has created for them. Ashe to Laura Cerwinske!
Inner peace in your home.......2003-06-26
As you browse throught this book you will feel inspired in many ways; you will be inspired spiritually of course but also at looking at the world in a different way. In this book the differences between religions are erased, the belief in ancient dieties mesh with contemporary reflections of Jesus, Buddah, Hindu Shiva and Shakti figures, African fetish figures or sculptures are intermingled with Burmese textiles and Mexican altars , complete with crosses adorned with milagros are juxtaposed on other pages with devil wood carvings and images of death in the form of calaveras (skeletons). There is even a section on Santeria altars where the text explains the origins of the religion as coming with the slaves from Yoruba to Cuba and spreading throughout the Caribbean. The book is organized with a text and accompanying pictures of the history of sacred design and the meaning of santuary. If you look at the table of contents you will see that the author explores gardens, rooms and shrines, altars , art and artifacts. The text is less than spellbinding but the pictures are magnificent. The author takes you into several artists homes and naturally they are some of the most spectacular. If you are into wood work from New Mexico than you are in for a real treat. There is nearly a two page spread of renowned santero Ramon Jose Lopez bedroom that shows his "chapel" where he sleeps. The bed has six panels, featuring various saints, a room divider with more hand carved panels of saints, many styles of crosses, including an altar made of wood in form of a pyramid where each level is lit by candle light and colorful retablos. It is a sight to behold and helps explain the inspired beautiful work by Lopez. In general this is a book that opens up the possibilities for creativiy to flow and create your own santuary. Having a mini altar myself that continues to grow and having seen some impressive homes where sacred places exist , this book helps to borrow ideas from or develop some new ideas. The gardens featured range from simple, rustic places to elaborate arts of work complete with sculptural panels and life sized sculptures looking as though they are dancing in the garden in their inanimate state. The colorful pictures seem to reveal something new each time you look at the book, it as though the spirits reveal themselves when the time is right. A fine book for browsing after taking a break from the task at hand, this book will inspire you and elevate your senses as you look to the heavens and give thanks for all the beauty around you.
Done borrowing from the library, time to purchase............2002-12-18
I found this book inspiring. Many different icons and symbolizations are represented from various sects of religion so I believe it has broad appeal. I witnessed glorious worlds beyond my own which to me is the very essence of opening a book in the first place. The photographs are lovely and each time through I have noticed something different in detail from the time before. Serenity flows from the pages.
We were inspired by another book, Holy Personal by Laura Chester, and built a 10' x 12' meditation room in our back garden. In A Spiritual Style has only affirmed our desire to transform our interior living spaces into sacred, meaningful places of comfort and self-expression for our family as well.
A showpiece for the author's own artwork. . ........1999-12-28
Beautiful to browse through, but steeped in a sort of spiritual narcissism which I found distasteful. The writing is disjointed and overall, the book poorly organized. A disappointment.

Book Description
Colored pencils offer aspiring artists a unique combination of creative versatility and precise control. This introductory course encompasses everything the budding and intermediate-level artist needs to get started right away: basic materials and tools; wet and dry techniques; the successful use of color, texture, and composition; the effect of perspective and depth on a drawing; maximizing a limited palette; and enhancing and burnishing colors. Sixteen skill-building projects and practical exercises are demonstrated through 150 color photographs, with detailed, expert instruction covering the four most commonly explored artists’ subjects: still life, landscape, people, and animals.
Customer Reviews:
The good with the bad.......2007-09-19
This is not really a book about "colored pencils," by which is usually meant Prismacolor wax pencils, or similar; it's a book about watercolor pencils, which are related, but not identical. Although some of the techniques are the same, the goals are different and the results, done well, aren't alike.
There is some good advice on technique here, but the example projects are uneven. Some of them are OK, some of them are quite nice, while others -- particularly the portraits -- well, not so much.
Finally, note that the topic of this book is not drawing per se, but painting or rendering: the author recommends in virtually every project that the reader start by tracing a source photograph.
Quite Helpful Book on Drawing with Colored Pencils.......2007-05-17
I picked up some good tips from reading this book. Now I'll tuck an emory board in with my pencils when I'm out drawing wild flowers, so I can sharpen the points of my pencils without having a pencil sharpener eat them up.
Even though I've read 3 or 4 books on using colored pencils, this helped me understand how to add burnishing with a white pencil and about shading and mixing colors. I have a better concept of using highlights, but still don't quite understand using perspective very well.
The main part of the book features sixteen demonstrations that show a finished drawing and the reference photo of the subject. Using eight steps, it shows the work in progress and gives instructions for achieving the finished drawing.
The topics covered in these demonstrations include four still lifes, four landscapes, four portraits and four animal drawings. This allows it to show a variety of techniques like monotone drawing, wax resist, and using layering to get the right strength of color. It gives tips for special effects for drawing fabric, fur, sand, etc. Using the pencils with water was explained and how to mix it with dry pencils.
The book ends with a gallery of eight inspiring drawings by top colored pencil artists.
I was quite pleased with this book.

Customer Reviews:
Nice guide for a novice Pentax owner.......2002-02-11
I bought this book hoping for information specific to my camera (ZX-M) with tips on photography in general. Spending a couple of hours on photo.net and reading a book by Lee Frost provided far more useful information than is contained in this book. The manual that came with the camera does a very good job educating the user on the various functions of the camera. There were some useful tips on using flash and understanding the metering system. If you are a complete novice this will be a very useful book for you. If you are a complete novice and have spent some time doing research before purchasing your camera this will not be as useful. If you are an experienced amateur this book will be of very little use.
Not enough camera-specific information.......2000-04-07
I bought this book hoping it would be full of specificinformation on my Pentax ZX-M. Unfortunately, I found it consisted ofonly one chapter on my camera, one on the older K1000 (as advertised), and the rest general tips that you could read about in much more detail in a book like Grimm et al.'s Basic Book of Photography or Adams' series. I wanted information on lenses in the Pentax system, how my specific flash unit worked best, etc. Buy this book only if you're looking to complete your photo library and have extra $ you don't want to spend on film.

Book Description
My Discovery of Brazil: 500 Years After Cabral is a first-hand account of a farmland owner-settler in the state of Pernambuco in northeast Brazil. With her background in anthropology, Anna Russell has explored the national character of Brazil, borne out of her personal experiences, in a narrative that deals with the Brazilian People and their attitude towards work and land in the backdrop of land-grabbing movements of the MST. Her long stay as a fazenda owner, from 1972-2000, forms the basis of a book that reflects an immigrant's perspectives on the Brazilian system, the vice-like grip of the local mafia, as well as the world views, attitudes and prejudices of a developing brazil that tries to modernize and make rapid strides. A useful book to further one's understanding of Brazil and its political, economic and social systems.

When Dan Quayle chastised the sitcom Murphy Brown for flouting traditional family values by having its lead give birth out of wedlock, he had a point: television had moved beyond the Nelsons to the new world of the Simpsons. That shift, along with other harbingers of social change, allowed both Democrats and Republicans to deploy apocalyptic visions of family decline and social disorder. (A factoid: premarital pregnancy rates have never fallen below 10 percent throughout our history.) In this lively reading of American social history, Gillis shows us that the good old days were never really all that good and that while family values are not in danger, it won't keep many of us from yearning for a fabulous golden age when kids minded their elders and all was right with the world.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant synthesis........2001-05-18
This thoughtful and orginal book is well written and fascinating. It incorporates a wide historiography into a brief and cogent synthesis while making its main points. Whether you are a scholar of the history of the family, a student writing a research paper or just someone interested in interogating your own family myths, this book would be very useful.
Social construction of family images.......2000-03-21
I really enjoyed this book by Gillis. I particulary found the idea of, the family we live by versus the family we live with, interesting. I used this book to write a research paper on the social construction of family photographs. Are the images the photograph imply real? Is it an image the family has constructed on purpose? Gillis has made a lot of intersting points in this book and everyone should read it.

Book Description
The first book to present the greatest photographs of the Civil War in the three-dimensional format in which they were originally taken and meant to be seen, The Civil War in Depth is a landmark contribution to both photographic history and the ever-popular study of the Southern rebellion. Author Bob Zeller resurrects a fascinating aspect of Civil War photography that has, until now, been largely forgotten, assembling more than 150 of the most compelling views of the war -- some of them well known in their one-dimensional form; all of them remarkable windows on another time. Complete with a stereoscopic viewer that unveils each image in glorious 3-D, The Civil War in Depth offers scenes that come to life in a way no two-dimensional photograph ever could. The remarkable collection includes the first war action photograph ever taken -- the shelling of Fort Sumter in 1863 -- as well as more than a dozen Civil War images never published until now. From the stoic face of Abraham Lincoln to the slave pens, prisons, wrecked battlefields, and devastated cities of the South, the war between the states has never been revealed with such astonishing clarity.
Customer Reviews:
A great history of stereoscopic photography.......2003-09-05
This book is a fantastic resource for those interested in the history of stereo photography during the Civil War. The author focuses more on the stereo aspects of the war than on the war itself which is good because unlike the war in general, there is little written about stereo photography during this time. Many of the stereo images presented are very rare and some have never been published before this printing. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in stereo photography or lesser known aspects of this time period but those looking for another general book on the civil war may not find what they are looking for in this book.
OK. I really like the 3-D effect!.......2001-01-19
I've got The Civil War In Depth and The Civil War Collection, so I've got my Bob Zeller itch sated. I enjoyed the stereoscopic photos in both I and II, but you know what? Once the novelty of viewing Civil War photos in stereo wears off, you're left with two books that are more or less devoted to one little niche of Civil War historiana and a hand full of images to view. For a pretty hefty price tag, too.
I'm not into collecting Civil War stereophotographs. I like looking at them and am mildly interested in viewing the photos for their own merits as windows onto the greatest struggle the US has ever been through. But I don't have the passion for collecting them, and I'm not really interested in Civil War photographers; I've always been thrilled by the image of Pickett's charge, or of the assault on the stone wall at the base or Marie's Heights. I wish The Civil War In Depth II had more photos, more depth, and less focus on photography and photographers. I cruised throught he book and thought, "That's it?"
A small peak through a time machine.......2000-08-13
"The Civil War in Depth, Volume II" is Bob Zeller's followup to his first book of Civil War stereo photographs, published three years ago. As he explains in the foreward, Zeller had not intended to do a sequel, even though there had been some outstanding stereo views he had not been able to include in the first volume. Less than two years ago, however, he was granted access to a phenomenal collection of Civil War stereo photos compiled by Robin Stanford, an amateur historian (and that is "amateur" in all the best senses). Photos from Ms. Stanford's collection provide nearly half the images in the present volume.
In this book we see in three-dimensions battlefields and campgrounds, generals and private soldiers, the living and the dead, great cities and slave plantations. Viewing these images is like being granted a small peak through a time machine. They give an unmatched immediacy to the Civil War and the people who lived through it -- or died in its battles. The photographs of the dead (some familiar from their usual "mono" reproductions) are especially powerful, the reality of battlefield death driven home when you for the first time see the soldiers' bodies seemingly at your feet.
Stereophotography of the Civil War.......2000-03-13
This book in an excellant introduction to Civil War stereophotography. The pictures are wonderfully composed and provide insight into the war. There is a good foundation placed and a simple history written.
History in 3-D.......2000-01-26
"Civil War in Depth" is a fascinating piece of work. The stereoscopic photographs literally jump off the page when viewed properly with the enclosed 3-D viewer. Many of these views were previously published using only one side. Thus the true look and clarity of detail was lost, but within these pages the pictures come back to life!
In speaking with Mr. Zeller at Chambersfest 99' in Chambersburg, PA, I found many of these views were never seen until most recently; with several more unseen views recently surfacing after publication. If the opportunity ever presents itself, by all means, see his slide presentation based upon his research.
Many thanks to Bob Zeller for the excellent work and detail that went into this publication and I hope to see more newly discovered views in a possible up and coming book.
I highly recommend this book to fellow Historians and Civil War buffs. It's a must for your collection!

Book Description
Oxidative stress induced by the over-production of free radicals and other reactive species is implicated in the pathophysiology of a wide range of human diseases. A detailed investigation is made into the evidence implicating oxygen radicals in the etiology of eleven different human diseases or conditions. World renowned experts from each discipline review the data supporting this involvement and discuss the full implications that result. Topics covered include Alzheimer's disease, cerebral ischemia, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, ARDS, critical care medicine, and cancer.
An invaluable resource for those seeking up-to-date information on the evidence supporting the involvement of oxygen radicals in human disease, this text also instigates theoretical discussion of future research endeavors.
