very helpful study book.......2006-06-07
i studied only this book for this portion of the LARE and found it to be very helpful. the test in this booklet is actually harder in my opinion than the LARE, so if you can ace this book, you'll pass the real thing.

only for beginners.......2001-07-25
I bought this book with the hope of learning something new. Although I did not read it from cover to cover, what I did read was too basic to be worth the money. Much of what is in the book could be learned at a beginning ceramics class in a park district class in one or two sessions. In fact, for the price, a park district class or other beginning ceramics class would be much more inspiring.
Informative and an easy read........2000-04-23
I purchased this book for a ceramics class. I am happy that I did. I found the book easy to read and very informative. The class I am taking is an independent study and the book is my inspiration. I am working through the various techniques in the book. The pictures are inspirational and the words give you enough information to to actually make the piece as the artist did in the book.
Zakin is a great ceramist!.......2000-04-12
I actually haven't read this book, but I have learned a lot of what is in it from Richard Zakin himself. I am taking a ceramics class right now and he is my professor. I'm having a blast working with clay and the glazes that he makes himself. I would reccomend this book without even reading it!
Zakin covers all the bases.......2000-04-06
Zakin does an excellent job with this book. He is thorough and quite knowledgeable. The book is worth the $ just to view the hundreds of examples by various artists worldwide. Not only does he give you the technical information on clays, glazes and firing - you get the tecbniques of many potters. It would cost hundreds of dollars to participate in the workshops required to learn these techniques. If you are a visual learner and are a hobbyist or teachinng professional this book is worth the money.
Book Description
A book of strange and affecting images that evoke both the sublime and the impossible
Barbara Ess is renowned for her unique use of the pinhole camera, and her effort to "photograph what cannot be photographed." These haunting images, made over the last twenty years, describe a mysterious world of seemingly mundane surfaces where everyday objects are mantled in inscrutability.
Ess's is a conscious quest to explore what she calls "ambiguous perceptual boundaries: between people, between the self and the not self, between in here and out there." Using a simple cardboard camera with no lens and a minute aperture, Ess creates unsettling, richly evocative photographs. I Am Not This Body probes the primary, personal experience, and depends on the viewer's imagination, instincts, and memories.

...and i am not this jaded.......2003-01-24
I remember being in 9th grade and digging through the garbage to collect trash to make psycho-sardonic-greeting cards with. Boy that was funny. Me and Ellen B just cracked up over that so hard...no one else seemed to get it. That's kind of how this collection struck me--a bit of an inside joke using old crud and dead end debris to create ghostly and funky tableaus. I've never owned a book of professional photography but was inspired by the reviewer notes to buy this online without a preview. I can honestly say that if i had been able to open the pages and experience the images even briefly--i wouldn't have purchased the collection. Yes, the psychological interiour is filled with murky matter and we are bound to witness it and some are gifted at illuminating it, but there was no heart revelation in this work for me. It just kind of felt ragged out and sloppy. No, we don't need another book of glossy yosemite postcards, but for thirty bucks and all the accolades i expected more of a transformative experience and less "event-bam". But hey, the snake on the den floor was cool.
Dreamy Inspiration.......2002-03-26
Dream-like, mysterious, haunting,......but at the same time these images by Barbara Ess evoke a deja vu feeling in me. It's as if I've experienced these images myself....are these my own memories or dreams displayed on the pages? well, this book certainly makes me want to get hold of a pinhole camera to achieve at least technically (hopefully) some of the visual qualities of these dreamy images. Leave those books of Yosemite on the bookstore shelves (more than enough have been consumed) and pick up a copy of I AM NOT THIS BODY to get a taste of the artistic and subconscious-evoking possibilities of photography.

Abelardo Morell's magical camera obscura images blur the boundaries between interior and exterior worlds.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2005-08-15
Abe was my first photography professor at massachusetts college of art, he's an amazing photographer and an amazing and inspiring teacher. Pick this book up and get inspired too!
Sublime and Intriguing.......2004-09-29
Photography is a fascinating art form. What is more fascinating is when a photographer transcends the photo to create artistic imagery that invites on in to spend time viewing the image. Abelardo Morell does just this. The quality of the writing and the paper just add to the overall experience. A book worthy of a special spot on the shelf or, even better, on the coffee table so many can share in the beauty.
Wow again!.......2004-09-10
Picked up Morell's newest at the Brookline Booksmith book signing the other night, where the artist gave an inspiring talk. Going back for more copies tonight. This is the single best homage to photography ever! Where does a person get such fantastic ideas and how does he realize them with such beauty and wonder? Last year, one could hardly imagine how Morell might follow up his equally elegant Book of Books. Well, now we know.
Book Description
"Wittliff has succeeded in bringing a new, but very old-fashioned, viewpoint to his exciting work."
The Bloomsbury Review
La vida brincalife jumpsand yet we strive to capture its passing moments by creating images. One of the simplest yet most evocative techniques for image-making is pinhole photography. Using a tiny aperture without a lens to shine light on a piece of film, pinhole cameras accumulate light until an image forms. Bill Wittliff calls the cameras he makes
tragaluces, "light swallowers." By controlling only the size of the aperture, the distance to the film, and the length of the exposure, he makes images that forsake the documentary realism of traditional photography to disclose instead the presence of the mystical in the everyday world.
The
tragaluz photographs in
La Vida Brinca record iconic images of Hispanic life. Wittliff photographed fiestas, religious observances, street scenes, people's faces, and enduring rural landscapes. But with the soft focus and surprise elements that typify his
tragaluz photographs, these images become dreamlikescenes from a world where, as Stephen Harrigan says, "reassuring touchstones are likely to dissolve, and where the unseen is always startlingly on view." The accompanying essays by Harrigan and Elizabeth Ferrer discuss the history and techniques of pinhole photography, as well as Bill Wittliff's artistic choice to work in this medium. As a work of art,
La Vida Brinca reveals that pinhole photography is an ideal vehicle for finding profound meaning in the commonplace, for seeing beyond what the eye can see.

Una calidad narrativa excepcional!!!.......2006-02-19
Andres:
Bueno, me pediste mis comentarios y ahi estan. Quizas un poco subjetivos porque comparto tu ideas politicas y tus sentimientos hacia la revolución cubana aunque la incoherencia de vivir en el imperio no lo demuestre.
Un abrazo
Facundo
Book Description
The 1930s were a time of growing tension for the smaller states of Eastern Europe. Since the end of the First World War they had enjoyed an independence which most of them had not known for centuries, but this was now threatened by the growing power of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Instead of combining for self defence, they were bitterly divided. The Munich crisis showed how little reliance could be placed on the Western democracies, whose power to intervene militarily in Eastern Europe was negligible. In effect this left the smaller East European states with little alternative but to become clients of either Germany or Russia.
Customer Reviews:
Good look.......2004-07-31
I'll attempt to concentrate my remarks on what I think prospective buyers want to see - a description of what is inside the book; as with all MAA titles, different people want different things, some are interested primarily in uniform details, others in history.
This book offers a good deal of detail in many areas. As always, do not make this your sole source of information, but it is a great start on many subjects not covered anywhere else, not even the internet.
The book starts with an historical introduction to the politics of Eastern Europe, dividing Eastern European participation in WW II into 5 phases and providing some nice maps. It then looks at several different nations in turn - Finland, Hungary, Romania (mis-spelled "Rumania" throughout the text), Slovakia, and "Other Allies" - primarily Italy with a mention of the Spanish contingent. These "other Allies" have their own titles in MAA.
The overviews of the nations concentrated on politics and also have reasonably detailed orders of battle, including divisional compositions which also give an idea of how large their militaries were. The focus is on ground forces, with little said about air forces (and nothing about naval forces, for the simple reason that what little naval forces some of these combatants had played little or not part in the Eastern Front campaigns).
Nice touch was the inclusion of a chart with AFV national markings, and there are good detailed sidebars on the rank structure of the Finnish, Slovakian, Romanian and Hungarian armies with nicely done insignia sketches as well as info on branch/corps insignia.
Photos are good, and colour plates cover the four main nationalities well. Chappell is always good, and these seem to be some of his better figures; nice variety of poses and very clear details.
Comparing the info on Romanians in this volume to that presented in MAA 246, one can see that there are many details left out, but the basic essentials are all presented here. As a uniform enthusiast, I was pleased with the insignia information alone - this information isn't available anywhere else. Those looking for detail on equipment, armour, small arms, will need to look elsewhere.
Nice supplement to the other books in the MAA line dealing in more detail with some of these same subjects.
a very descreptive book.......1999-08-01
This book tells you the info and has very nice full color ilistrations that help you visulize the men.

Book Description
For more than a century following its discovery, South Africa held little interest for the imperial powers of Europe. When gold was discovered there toward the end of the nineteenth century, the territory suddenly became one of the most hotly contested pieces of real estate in the world. Fuelling the Empire tells the story of the South African gold rush, the vast political and economic forces it set in motion, and the devastating military conflict to which it gave riseâthe Boer War, the first large-scale human tragedy of the twentieth century.
