Book Description

In the years 1942 to 1948, Le Corbusier developed a system of measurements which became known as "Modulor". Based on the Golden Section and Fibonacci numbers and also using the physical dimensions of the average human, Modulor is a sequence of measurements which Le Corbusier used to achieve harmony in his architectural compositions. Le Modulor was published in 1950 and after meeting with success, Le Corbusier went on to publish Modulor 2 in 1955. In many of Le Corbusier's most notable buildings, including the Chapel at Ronchamp and the Unité d'habitation, evidence of his Modulor system can be seen. These two volumes form an important and integral part of Le Corbusier's theoretical writings.

5 out of 5 stars Le Corbusier's Modulor l and ll.......2007-03-09

The books arrived well packaged and on time. The books however were a little smaller than what I anticipated since the last time I reviewed these same books I took out at a local library, but nevertheless I'm impressed that the books did come to me in a compacted design. For what better way to showoff the design tool called the Modulor by placeing a picture of it on it's very own jacket that came with the books. You feel as if the whole box set is some sort of handy carpenters tape measure to carry 'round with you.The inside of the book is full of explanatory remarks about perfecting, creating and applying this human scale ruler which incorporates the full use of what is termed the Golden Section and thereby adhereing it to his own buiding designs. For those of you who are avid Golden Ratio/Section seekers these two books are a great gift idea and a great collectors item. The books also include many letters too from his colleagues who critique and sometimes try to disprove his modulor really works.I have included pictures to show you the overall appearance of both books and its smart jacket. Therefore an excellant choice and would recommend to college students, Architects, and all those versed in the Arts in general

4 out of 5 stars A bit of history..........2001-05-05

Le Corbusier had been working for some time on his Modulor system using these French decimal measurements but without much success. Then one of his collaborators, Py, said: "Isn't the height we are working with rather a French height? Have you ever noticed that in English detective novels the hero is always six feet tall?" Le Corbusier continues: " We then applied this standard. To our delight, the graduations of a new Modulor, based on a man six feet tall, translated themselves into round figures in feet and inches". (hardly surprising when you consider that this is a natural system of measure.).

5 out of 5 stars an overlooked photographer, was ahead of his time.......2004-02-17

This book probably does more than any other to get inside the strange mind of Clarence John Laughlin. This is Southern Gothic at it's height. Best known as a documentor of crumbling plantation homes, Laughlin himself believed he was documenting something else indeed; he felt the camera can record the psychic impressions and nuances of the spirit world, which permeated the sites he photographed. It's weird stuff, and always overlooked in photo history texts.

If you've ever seen the movie "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" with Bette Davis, you'll realize that it was heavily influenced by Laughlin's still images. The fan of gothic culture will find much to brood upon in Laughlin's work. The fact that the bulk of it was done in the years 1935-1950 amaze people when I show them this book. So, photographers, southern historians, paranormal afficianadoes, and Goths should all check out this and any of Laughlin's unique photographic works.

4 out of 5 stars surrealistic and haunting view of new orleans.......1998-07-01

Laughlin's photography goes inside the beauty and decay of New Orleans and surrounds, yielding a surrealistic view that mirrors much literature, but few photographs, of the area. Laughlin often uses models whose faces are distant yet haunting, and has a marvelous eye for architecture. Much more than photographs of a place, these are photographs that become part of the place. Comments by Laughlin and others that accompany the photographs are definitely an enhancement.

Author Woodbury has selected some of his best writing, taken from his quarterly tabloid, "Out West." Woodbury roams the blue highways and small towns of the Western USA, interviewing those he meets and writing about the places he visits. He has a tremendous sensibility about where to go (and perhaps more importantly, when to stay put), and a newsman's nose for a story. The stories that he digs up are not so much daily news, as people and places that are exemplative of small-town life, forgotten times, and the general oddities that make the world more interesting than yet another faceless mall (or Starbucks or McDonald's).

Woodbury delights in his subjects, and in many ways, is himself the most interesting subject of his writing. His reactions and feelings (especially his musings about being a wandering journalist) are a cross between reporting and diary-writing, creating a highly engrossing blend. Among the selection in this book are stories of Bill, Wyoming (population 1), eating a plate of cow brains, waging war on chipmunks over Cheezits, sampling potato ice cream and visiting museums and attractions such as Jake the Alligator Man and Death Valley.

Amazon may be able to find you a copy of this out-of-print gem, or you can get a copy through Woodbury's web-site, www.outwestnewspaper.com.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent info, less excellent analysis.......2006-10-15

This nearly-twenty-year-old book still has much to commend it: comprehensive scholarship, easy-to-read (though not sparkling or tight) prose style, and no heavy-handed ideological agenda (though the author's values and assumptions aren't hard to discern).

On the down side, there's not much by way of interpretive framework, and what's there wavers between incoherence and airy-fairy hand-waving.

On the former, for instance, the authors seem both (a) to want to see a significant set of fairly stable "family values" that lasted from the late eighteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, which are overthrown by late-twentieth century changes, and (b) to show the overwhelming diversity of family life, and the enormous deviations from the alleged stable values, during the same period. But point (b) seems to prove point (a) wrong.

On the airy-fairy issue, they have this notion of "the family" as resilient, rising to all sorts of challenges and adapting to all sorts of strains. But it's hard to tell what they mean by "the family" in that context, since they identify no core set of traits, no base-line definition, that pervades the enormous range of "families" they so effectively describe. One could just as easily use the info they present to argue that "the family"--meaning the child-producing, and/or sex-regulating unit of society--is, as conservatives fear, becoming decreasingly important among forms of human affiliation, more peripheral to decision-making and social life.

The info-overpowering-the-analysis problem even goes to the paragraph-by-paragraph level. Dozens, if not hundreds, of times, the thesis sentences of paragraphs seem grafted on after the fact, with the collation of facts in the particular paragraph at best losely related to the putative thesis, and the theses contradictory of each other in the space of just a page or two. The book reads as if they, or more likely an editor, realized late in the process of writing that the book lacked, but eeded, something resembling a narrative flow, then tried to impose it on a near-final draft. Whatever really happened to produce this phenomenon, much of the book lacks any integral drive or argument, and what's there often seems oddly imprecise relative to the information presented.

Still, the info is great, and well worth thinking about on your own.

A couple of things seem a bit off, to me. They date the rise of the companionate family about a century earlier than other scholars I've read. Well, actually, they do and they don't--after they'd said so much about the rise of the companionate family in the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, I was surprised then to find a whole chapter that agrees with other scholars that the companionate family was a product of the early twentieth century. Huh? Which was it? My guess is that they mistakenly ascribe a more pervasive social presence and influence to the early foreruners of the companionate family than is accurate.

And while they aren't heavy-handed with their agenda, they frequently say things like, "The government recognized it's obligation," or "The government failed to accept its duty." That seems to me to reflect naivety about "the government," as if it were some separate, pre-existing entity that has inherent obligations, rather than a tool of society that can and does take different forms under different circumstances; and about the social dynamics that create obligations.

But the book is well worth a read. Especially these days, when so much ill-informed blather about "family values" taints public disourse--from both the right and the left--better knowledge of the enormous diversity and flux that have characterized "the family" would help both sides stop being so self-righteous.

5 out of 5 stars Highly readable, very informative.......2006-05-15

This is probably my favorite book on U.S. social history. While academic, it's written in a very readable style. The authors make the history of American families extremely interesting, and they shatter some of our more romantic cultural myths. I referred to this book when I wrote my master's thesis on the U.S. household economy of the 1930s during the Great Depression. My first ancestors in this country lived in New England in the early to mid 1600s, so I find these accounts fascinating, as I can imagine how all of my ancestors since that time lived their lives in our developing country and culture. I highly recommend this book to students, history researchers, or the curious casual reader.

5 out of 5 stars real good book.......2005-12-18

I expected this book to be pretty dry and academic and was pleasantly suprised . It gives a really balanced veiw of the family and the author doesnt seem to be tied to any of the popular political opinions of the day .I learned a lot I never knew . Its well written and one of those books thats hard to put down .

                                                    2 out of 5 stars Neocon's dream book.......2007-06-21

I sure hope the second edition is a bit more objective in its prescriptions for what to do in there, because the first edition reads like a neocon's propaganda ploy for invading the place. Maybe that's why Dubya did it; he's a complete idiot and this book is all he read about the place. It is strong on the ancient history and early 20th century history, but the book turns into hagiography when it gets to Saddam Hussein and all his attempts to obtain WMD. After the Gulf war with all the inspections he was subjected to , all the surveillance, the UN checks, the economic sanctions, is it really logical to believe he'd be able to run a weapons program of the size Dubya, Condi, Dick, Wolfie, and the rest of the vulcans insisted he had? Sorry, but it just fails the laugh test, especially since it would have been so easy even at that time to verify that those aluminum tubes were not suited for centrifuges, that yellowcake had not been obtained at all let alone from Niger, that Saddam had no sympathy for or ties with Al Qaeda, and there was no meeting between Mohammed Atta and Iraqi intelligence agents in Prague or anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! I Now Understand Iraq Better! .......2006-08-14

This book is a very comprehensive description of Iraq. Iraq shouldn't be a country and probably will never be from my current understanding. The British formed the country for their own convience and to control the Middle East so they could keep oil flowing. When they lost strength, the United States jumped in, again to keep oil flowing. The Americans have copied just about every mistake the British ever made, we just haven't pulled out yet. What a mess and I don't think anyone can get around the fact that the Kurds need a country. Very interesting book and it gave me room to understand and think!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the total beginner.......2006-08-11

I read the 2002 edition from the library which was obviously before the invasion and subsequent capture of Saddam Hussein. I found this a great book for a total novice. It explains the progress of events in Iraq in very simple terms and takes time to repeat the main points of interest many times, which I found useful in such a complex topic. Just because it presents the concepts in a simple manner does not mean it is simplistic - scholars of the subject might find it basic but I think even most well educated westerners would learn a lot from this text. The most important point for me was that it was very readable. My only criticism was that there were no way near enough maps and those that were in the book were pretty badly drawn and without detail. I would have liked many more maps, especially showing location of troops during the various battles, relationship of the arab states, location of shiite/sunni strongholds, arab/persian, kurdish strongholds. Overall well worth the effort of reading.

I actually enjoyed the fact that this was written before the US invasion since it gave a great before the fact perspective on the situation and wasn't tainted by our the current sorry situation we all find ourselves in.

3 out of 5 stars A little imperfect in his moral conclusions about Saddam.......2005-04-15

I"m not sure why the book's author feels that stopping Saddam Hussein back in 2003 was anything less than a good thing. The former Iraqi leader got a million Iraqis and Iranians killed in the war between the two nations from 1980 to 1988, Saddam killed thousands of ethnic Kurds in Iraq and robbed those Kurds he didn't kill of almost any rights, caused 25% of Iraqi kids to starve (a Unicef report made in 2002 showed this), took over the nation Kuwait to pay off war debts, afer being expelled from there in the deadly Desert Storm he tried to take over again in 94, etc. What did the guy have to do before we decided he had to be taken out of power---destroy half of Japan? Tragert you should know better than almost anyone else that Saddam was worse for his own Iraqi than the coalition has ever been.

3 out of 5 stars Proofreaders needed; or As the Chalkboard Screeches.......2003-04-04

Much if not most of this book is helpful and provides a much needed historical review and provides a context for today's events. Mr. Tragert's handling of ancient history is adequate, but nothing a good ten minutes in an encyclopedia could not equal. His treatment of the Epic of Gilgamesh is mercifully short and he touches lightly upon the similarities between it and the Bible without falling into the trap of claiming this as proof that the Old Testament redactors borrowed this legendary material to include in their own cosmology.

I would have rated his book higher except for one glaring mistake which set my teeth on edge which is the reaction I get when someone scratches a chalkboard with their fingernails over and over again. On page 44 he says, "Like the Greeks who followed them, the Sumerian religions were pantheistic and their gods were anthropomorphic." Feeling like an idiot, I consulted another annoying feature of this book which are the little boxes that appear throughout the text with little "nuggets" of information. This one was "Desert Diction" and defined pantheism as, "...{The} belief in a group of gods where each represents a specific human action, or emotion, or a physical element, such as one for the sun, and one for the moon." Let me guess, a group of gods would be a pantheon (Greek pan means all; theos means god or gods), thus pantheon would mean all of the gods. I may be an idiot, but I am not in kindergarten. What this informational "nugget" has done is define polytheism (poly=many + theoi=gods) not pantheism. Pantheism means all is god; it equates god with the cosmos.

I do have to give Tragert credit in that he misdefines pantheism consistently throughout the book. But if his defintion is correct, then all of my dictionaries are wrong, not to mention most if not all of the authors who have written on the subject like C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Dorothy Sayers, Aldous Huxley, etc...or I am really a Complete Idiot.

While this may seem to be a small thing, it is disconcerting nonetheless, and raises the possibility of other not quite so obvious errors and misdefintions that might slip by unnoticed. Despite these caveats and the annoying way it is set up, this Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Iraq is worth reading and is a useful tool.

Your students will relish taking official laboratory "roles" as they perform the science labs in Team Science. You'll delight in classroom-tested labs-complete with specific directions for organizing your class into independent, creative groups-reproducible handouts, and six "extra effort" projects.

These 34 hands-on experiments are designed to be completed in one class period (about 40 minutes from set up to clean up) and will help you reinforce concepts in earth, life, and physical sciences.
