Book Description
Our visual world is made of light. We light to see and to communicate. We light for security, to create mood and atmosphere, to enhance and entertain. Where natural light fails man has learned to improvise, constantly developing new technologies to illuminate art and architecture. Our visual experience and emotional reaction to buildings is shaped by the control of light and shadow. Light is increasingly integrated into the fabric of buildings and becomes a part of the architecture. Jonathan Speirs and Mark Major are experienced, award-winning Lighting Architects working internationally at the forefront of lighting design. This vividly illustrated book explores the influences that inspire their work. It investigates the basic properties and qualities of light, presents a sketchbook of ideas and observations, and includes an in-depth interview.

Book Description
The silversmith for centuries has been one of the most skilled of craftsmen. In Colonial America, silversmiths produced objects of great merit, crafting everyday articles with care and skill. The products of the colonial period are well known, but there is little authoritative research on the actual techniques of the silversmith. Henry J. Kauffman fills the gap with this study. He describes the tools and the methods used by these colonial artisans in fashioning the wide variety of silver objects that today are so highly prized. Photographs of the finished products, together with detailed illustrations of the step-by-step fabrication of individual objects, supplement the text. The author explains thoroughly the silversmithUs transformation of a blank of metal into a finished work of art. Starting with the simplest objects, forks and spoons, he progresses through the more complex techniques used to fashion plates and basins, cups and beakers, and finally teapots and coffeepots, as well as other household utensils and decorative items. 176 pages. 136 illustrations. 7" x 10". Soft cover.

Perceptive for 1985.......2006-05-01
Well, most of the predictions in this book have gradually come to light. The main thrust of the argument by Harry Mathias (the main force behind this book) is that video has the creative potential of film and video production should start incorporating film production values to acheieve its maximum potential. Strangely, less than half this book is devoted to how to do that; the rest is a brief outline of the video technology itself (in 1985). Apart from the suggestion that you use a cine light meter to measure the ASA (ISO) rating of your camera chip and use a waveform monitor to better visualise the image, there is little here of practical value. No mention of how to use a vectorscope to monitor the colour (I mean 'color' of course :-) of your signal and how to stay (or not) within "legal" broadcasting limits. Not even much advice on when and how to use the waveform monitor over and above a few pictures showing the obvious overexposure and underexposure results on the waveform monitor screen. There's some detail about configuring and registering a video camera but the distant, black and white photos don't clearly make the point, so it's not much practical help. Nevertheless, in it's time it was that message about video that still makes this book worth reading. More recently (1993) the following book picks up from this one: "Lighting for Film & Electronic Cinematography" by Dave Viera and is worth every penny!
An excellent primer on the technical fundamentals of video........1998-09-02
While this book has less of an emphasis on adapting film techniques to video than the title may suggest, its strength is in its coverage of the technical aspects of the video medium with the ideal that once you understand the properties you are working with, you can then begin to exercise creative control. This book is a wonderful introduction to the world of video engineering without all the electrical, technical, and mathematical jargon. As a television production student, I found that it answered many of the questions I had about mystical things such as waveform monitors, vectorscopes, and the elusive "pedestal" setting. Because the book is targeted towards people working in the world of film, it spends time comparing the qualities of latitude, exposure, gamma, and contrast of film with that of video, and how to overcome the limitations that video has in these areas. The 1985 edition that I own is becoming a bit dated with recent advances in technology and the advent of digital television, but because analog NTSC video is nowhere near death I recommend this book to anyone who is starting off in the field of video production.

Front cover illustrations for DER SPIEGEL have a long history. Commissioned artists such as Braldt Bralds, Michael Matthias Prechtl, Dieter Wiesmuller or Rafal Olbinski rank among the best illustrators in the world. For five decades, their talent for illustrating current events and contemporary themes has helped to define DER SPIEGEL'S look. Now for the first time, original illustrations and corresponding magazine covers are included in a beautifully produced catalogue to accompany a current museum exhibition. One hundred and fifty illustrations by sixty artists are featured along with biographical information on each artist and discussions of artistic approaches. A preface by Steven Heller, the distinguished Art Director for The New York Times, opens the book and an interview with long-time cover editor Eberhardt Wachsmith completes the volume.

REMARKABLE GRAPHICS AND IMAGES.......2004-12-29
"Der Spiegel," a popular German weekly news magazine is not only known for its timely provocative articles but also for its unique cover illustrations. These covers reflect the current events covered within the magazine, and thus stand as a testament to their time.
Now, teNeues has collected some 200 illustrations commissioned by "Der Spiegel" and presented them in a folio size volume. These covers span five decades and include works by such internationally known artists as Braldt Bralds, Michael Matthias Prechtl, and Rafal Olbinski. The catalogue accompanies a museum exhibition which may be seen early next year in New York City. In addition to the cover illustrations readers will find biographical sketches of the artists as well as informative texts describing how various artists approach their work.
Steven Heller who is considered to be one of the foremost experts on the development of graphic design has said of this volume, "For at least one week each of these images was deemed important enough to be on the cover of a major national magazine.. This catalogue allows the ephemeral to be permanent and the fleeting to be treasured."
Those with an interest in graphics and images will find much to enjoy in "The Art of Der Spiegel."

In 1980, a drunk driver collided with French journalist Geneviève Jurgensen's brother-in-law's car and killed her two young daughters almost instantly. Since then, she has been a principled and able campaigner for road-safety awareness. The Disappearance is a book of letters to a friend, written, or apparently written, over an extended period, in which Jurgensen discusses different aspects of her bereavement--the useless regrets at having let the girls go on that particular outing, the lost hours during which she could have just breathed in their presence, the counting off each year of what her daughters would have been doing and how old they would have been had they lived. It is the nature of grief to repeat itself, and Jurgensen finds ways to acknowledge this without boring her readers. This is a book that deals with pain in a controlled fashion, combining the raw honesty of its American equivalents with the solidly balanced craft of the French epistolary novel.
Book Description
What do you do, how do you live, when both of your daughters are killed on the same afternoon? On April 30, 1980, Genevieve Jurgensen found herself facing that question when she lost her four- and seven-year-old daughters to a drunk driver. Here she presents her search for an answer.

Memorable and Exquisite.......2007-05-12
I read this book about 7 or 8 years ago but I think of it often. It's beautifully written and translated and is very powerful. I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with the loss of a child or anyone who knows someone who's lost a child. When I read the book I mourned for these little girls and their parents. It's clear to the reader how loved Mathilde and Elise were, how very special they were to their mom and dad. Genevieve Jurgensen captures a parent's love for a child exquisitely. This book is the most memorable book that I have ever read.
After September 11, 2001...........2001-09-23
On Friday, September 21, as I was driving listening to Ira Glass's This American Life on National Public Radio, a lengthy portion of this book was read. I had to pull over to the side of the road, unable to continue until it was finished. For those of us so far away from the site of last week's horror, connected only through television, radio, and print, it has been hard to move from the numbers to the names to the lives of all those lost. Our prayers have been frequent and our thoughts constant but we have still been removed. This helped me and I hope it will help us all.
Simple and beautiful.......2001-08-31
A lovely and valuable book. In the glimpses of her children that Ms. Jurgensen gives us in an effort to have us know what was lost, anyone who has ever loved a child must see and feel that child -the little chubby hand in yours, the legs wrapped tight around your waist. This book also gave me much to think about on the subject of compassion - for those you care about as well as those you see in passing and will likely never see again.
This book looks a parent's worst nightmare full in the face, so is not for everyone. But your openness to the wrenching pain of this story will reward you with the realization that, woven throughout this nightmare of sadness and loss is hope, survival, love, connection and happiness. Nightmare though it is, it's a beautiful thing.
'Tears In Heaven ...".......2001-01-27
Twelve years after her two young children, Mathilde and Elise, were mercilessly slain at the hands of a drunk driver, Genevieve Jurgensen continued to complete the process of healing through her writing.
Initially, she was overwhelmed, unable even to view their bodies and send them on their way ... "Wherever they went, they went alone." Would she ever, ever come to life again? Genevieve gives us a glimpse into her many hopes, fears and anguish through her letters.
After the passage of many years and the addition of two more children she appears to have brought her life full circle only to discover the happiness once again that was always there.
'Time can bring you down, bring you what you need, Time can break your heart, make you beg and plead' (Eric Clapton) Time has enabled us the opportunity for Genevieve Jurgensen to share with us her most personal thoughts, feelings and grief.
devastatingly beautiful.......2000-12-16
Jurgenson writes of something most of us hope never to experience -- the death of not one, but both of her children. Not a topic that ordinarily beckons for one's enthusiastic attention, this book caught mine when I heard one of her letters (the book is comprised of letters written to a friend, telling this story more than 10 years after the accident) read on the public radio show, This American Life. Jurgenson writes to this friend with terrible honesty about the entire emotional spectrum, reflects philosophically on the pain of existence, and demonstrates throughout it all that, somehow, one figures out how to carry on. And it all comes packaged in the most beautiful, provocative prose -- a translation, yes, but a very good one, I think.
It strikes me as a "must read" for anyone seeking greater understanding of the difficult inner dynamics of such a loss, whether personal or otherwise. Really, though, anyone interested in literary self-portraiture, psychology, or simply the human condition would likely find this book fascinating, riveting, and heart-rending. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Sergeant Charles Windolph was the last white survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn when he described it nearly seventy years later. A six-year veteran of the Seventh Cavalry, Windolph fought in Benteen’s troop on that fatal Sunday and recalls in vivid detail the battle that wiped out Custer’s command. Equally vivid is the evidence marshaled by Frazier and Robert Hunt on events leading up to the battle and on the investigation that followed.
Customer Reviews:
A valuable account of the Custer tragedy.......2003-11-29
It is difficult to really rate a work like this. This is the story of Charles Windolph, the last survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, in his own, simple words. Windolph told his story to a father and son historian team in the 1930s and 40s. Windolph's distinction as last survivor is a bit misleading--he was the last man who was present at the battle to die, but his title as last survivor does not mean he was with Custer's column of troops. He wasn't. In fact, he was under Benteen, and was one of many who survived the battle because they weren't as heavily engaged in it as Custer.
Windolph presents an interesting perspective on the battle, and seems relatively objective. He does tend to romanticize a little, but for the most part he refrains from throwing blame on Custer, Reno, Benteen, or anyone else (though he does state up front that he is partial to Benteen). His story is not all that unique when compared to other primary accounts of the battle, but it is nevertheless valuable as the testimony of a survivor of that horrible tragedy.
Included with Windolph's narrative are a number of primary documents, cobbled together in chapters and laced throughout with author's commentary. This is all right, but it would have been better to present these documents in their entirety, with only enough commentary (perhaps in the form of footnotes) to give the reader an idea of the background surrounding the documents. Still, the Hunts have done a relatively good job of remaining objective as well, something that is rare in a Custer historian. This is perhaps not the best account of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, but it is nevertheless an important one.
A memorable account of the Custer fight.......2000-03-23
As a Custer buff, this book has been on my shelf for a long time. A great book to read, one that fleshes out a lot of the daily life in the Seventh as well as the battle along Greasy Grass. Right up there with "Son of Morning Star" and Walter Camp's book on the subject. Check 'em out, you won't be disappointed.
Interesting Read.......1997-12-13
This book is compiled from the found writings of a sergeant of the Seventh Cavalry who survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The first hand accounts of men like Sergeant Windolph and Theodore Goldin are very valuable and interesting reading. They were not men defending their performance as were the officers like Benteen, Reno, and Godfrey. They had their biases but didn't have to grind axes. This account is worthwhile reading for students of the Seventh Cavalry and the Little Big Horn campaign.

Book Description
Spanning from the innauguration of James I in 1603 to the execution of Charles I in 1649, the Stuart court saw the emergence of a full expression of Renaissance culture in Britain. In
Art and Magic in the Court of the Stuarts, Vaughan Hart examines the influence of magic on Renaissance art and how in its role as an element of royal propaganda, art was used to represent the power of the monarch and reflect his apparent command over the hidden forces of nature.`Court artists sought to represent magic as an expression of the Stuart Kings' divine right, and later of their policy of Absolutism, through masques, sermons, heraldy, gardens, architecture and processions. As such, magic of the kind enshrined in Neoplatonic philosophy and the court art which expressed its cosmology, played their part in the complex causes of the Civil War and the destruction of the Stuart image which followed in its wake.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent history book in the Yatesian tradition.......1998-09-15
Hart's book is a must for all those interested in the esoterica and its key role in forming the Stuart court. The book also sheds interesting light on Stonehenge and the work of the court architect Inigo Jones.

Book Description
This book is concerned with the involvement of the cerebellum in learning and remembering certain motor tasks such as walking, riding a bicycle, and speaking. Processes of plasticity have been identified at the cellular level in the cerebellum that could underlie the learning of motor tasks, but whether these processes actually have such a role is a controversial topic. This book is unique in bringing together studies of plasticity at the cellular level with studies of plasticity or learning at the behavioral level, and in attempting to build bridges between these two fields of discourse. The book will appeal to neuroscientists and physiologists interested in the neural control of movement.
