Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Color photos or images of actual homes.......2007-02-14

Terrific book full of 97% modern ranch plans. Great use of space with move of the designer/architect plans. House plans are not in order by square footage - which would be a little nicer. I know that it is easy to search through internet house plans - but it is so nice to have a color book with this quality of printed paper.

Cheap price for the quality. Easy to compare the plans you like.

Over 200 authentic motifs from Java, Bali, Irian Jaya, and etc., including Batik, Ikat, Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet), Topeng (masks) designs. Illustrations are all black and white, copyright-free. Each motif has a short description, such as "Rakshasa head gold earring motif, Java, 13th- 16th centuries." Usually this descriptions are quite short, just tells you where or what, still it's informative enough to show you the name of familiar motifs.

5 out of 5 stars ROBERT FRANK'S BEST (with the Americans, of course).......2005-12-02

The Americans is a milestone in photography. Everybody should know that, and Robert Frank will surely be remembered for this book. But, what was before, and after the Americans? The answer is in The Lines of my Hand.
In these pages one can discover the strength of his vision before publishing The Americans, with pictures from England, Wales, Switzerland. And for me, what is more interesting, is all his evolution after the above mentioned book. His more and more experimental work in his house of Mabou. His loneliness, his isolation. In this book, all of his greatest pictures are printed (Sick of goodbys and Love, faith,... being the highlights).
Talking about the object itself, the printing is fantastic. It's a large format book, beautifully binded and with very good reproductions.
Really, for the price, it's a real bargain. Grab the first one you find.

Definitely a bunch of fun to see all this located in the one place, together.

            Book Description

In 1865, William Buck Dana, working a bold new departure in American journalism, established the nation's first business weekly, the Commercial and Financial Chronicle, in the country's commercial nerve center, New York City. As its publisher and editor, he became the nation's most influential reporter and commentator on business and finance, playing a major role in creating a national and international economy. Unequaled as a comprehensive and reliable source of business news, Dana's Chronicle has become a critical source for studying 19th century business history. This book is a study of Dana the man, his ideas, and their importance. Divided into three sections, the book considers Dana's formative years, his career, and his later life. The book then turns to the main themes conveyed in the Chronicle's editorial content, allowing the reader to imaginatively reconstruct Dana's mental world. Comments on Dana's and his paper's importance and influence are also included. While enlarging our understanding of Dana, the Chronicle, and economic thought of the time, Advocate for American Enterprise will enhance our understanding of this critically important era.

5 out of 5 stars Best history of the Revolution in the South.......2005-02-02

I ran across this book in my local library. As an avid history buff, I've always felt my knowledge of the Revolution was lacking. Many books on the revolution end up mired in confusing details. This book by David Russell is probably the best history book I have ever read. He begins by giving a background of the colonies from their origins through the beginning of the war. Russell is good at giving all the important details and backgrounds of the characters without becoming bogged down in too much detail. The book is very well organized by campaigns and I felt that I had an excellent understanding of the war in the south when I finished. Sharp, concise background information on the the leaders and their motives. Almost every small skirmish is covered, as well as the main battles. Where available he gives casualties on each side as well as the result of the battle on the moral of the inhabitants in the area, whose support was crucial to both sides. Most civilians were torn between King and colony and were forced to make a choice. The Patriots who fought for our country risked everything they had, a fact that is mostly forgotten today. Many thanks to Russell whose great writing skills kept me up many a night with a book I just couldn't put down.

                                    Book Description

The Ideal of Rationality presents an evaluation of all the main varieties of rationalism, in clear and jargon-free language. Different notions of rationality - such as means-end, conception, hedonism, and the evil-avoidance view - are examined and rejected, in favor of the theory that to act rationally is to 'act for the best', a theory Nathanson characterizes as "critical pluralism." Among present-day thinkers whose ideas are scrutinized are Richard Brandt, Bernard Gert, Gilbert Harman, John Kekes, Robert Nozick, Karl Popper, and John Rawls.

2 out of 5 stars Philosophizing in mid-air.......2003-08-25

*The Ideal of Rationality* is one of those passable books I wasted my time on during the summer holidays because I could not muster the intellectual determination to read really great ones after spending three hours a day studying Rohrbacher's *History of the Catholic Church*.

The author starts with what he admits might be a caricature of the so-called «classical ideal» of rationality, which apparently values thinking so much that it does not care what is being thought about, so long as people think as much as they can, and then some.

Nathanson then borrows from modern literature a counter-example of a neurotic anti-hero (what else ?) to show that some obsessive people think a lot but about the wrong things (like : how should I place my legs when I sit ?), so that their whole lives are spent in miserable, pointless circles of deliberation.

A second flaw of classical rationalism is that it expects us to hold a cosmic perspective on things- what has derisively been called «the view from nowhere». But this assumes that to be rational is to have «no needs, desires, goals or aims», which is itself false and therefore irrational. (Then again, can't you view your own ends and needs themselves from a cosmic perspective ?)

And finally, the classical model advocates an exaggerated cautiousness which often leaves the thinker in limbo: «Rationalists are committed to seeking knowledge, and when they cannot meet high standards of evidence, they value suspending belief rather than accepting ill-founded beliefs.» But since life has to be lived, this is also unworkable.

The classical ideal, therefore, must be abandoned, which Nathanson promptly does, opting for an instrumentalist, pragmatic conception of rationality in which what matters is getting results. If it works for you, it is rational, even if it involves self-deception or other forms of untruth which the classical ideal rejects on principle: your reason must be the slave of your passions and help you maximize the satisfaction of your desires.

But as the resulting model of rationality turns out to be a little messy and potentially self-destructive, Nathanson scavenges a few provisos from colleagues and abandons the maximization of desires in favour of acting in one's best interests. He argues that our ideals should not be inconsistent, immoral, bizarre, harmful or based on false beliefs and ends up with a definition or «rationality within reason» as «acting for the best» or making «the best use of our cognitive powers in striving for things we take to be good»- a formula subjectivists should find much to their liking, all the more so as he explains that «a pure egoist, from this perspective, coul act for the best from the rational perspective and yet act in a way that is grossly immoral.»

Though written in a non-technical style by a person who seems to be honestly trying to get somewhere, *The Ideal of Rationality* shares many of the flaws of modern philosophy books: it starts philosophizing in midair, prefers philosophical patchworks to system-building and ends up in a middle-of-the-road position that looks like a horse designed by a committee.

Though Nathanson argues that to be rational is to act efficiently in one's own best interests, he fails to acknowledge that determining where one's interests lie first requires us to answer certain fundamental metaphysical questions, such as: Do I have a soul ? Do I have eternal interests ? And do my actions here on Earth influence those eternal interests ? For if I do, these interests will outweigh my temporal ones in any utilitarian calculus I can think of.

Nathanson implicitly answers all these questions negatively, assuming a fashionably materialistic point of view. This is why he cannot but conclude that rationality does not require us to think of others in our deliberations. But since «criticism of factual beliefs... is one way in which ideals can be rationally assessed», his ideal of rationality stands or falls with the «factual beliefs» the truthfulness of which it takes for granted.

The first questions we should answer according to the author's own conception of rationality are therefore the very questions his book leaves unanswered.
