Book Description

Although straw bale construction is beginning to enter the mainstream, many people continue to wonder what a straw bale house looks like. The New Strawbale Home answers definitively, "Anything you want!" Innovative architects and builders are reinventing this century-old technology to create thick-walled modern houses of unsurpassed natural beauty. < BR> The New Strawbale Home compiles floor plans and images from thirty cutting-edge homes across North America, from California to Quebec, New Mexico to New England, showcasing a spectrum of regional styles and personal aesthetic choices. This practical guide discusses varying climate considerations and essential design details for problem-free construction and low maintenance, and also points out the ecologically friendly, energy-saving aspects of straw bale construction. The New Strawbale Home beautifully illustrates how building with straw bales allows for maximum personal creativity-whether the finished product is an urban home, a country hideaway, or anything in between. < BR> The New Strawbale Home includes information on budget considerations, code compliance, siting for energy efficiency, structural systems, and finishing touches. Also included are the valuable insights and experience of architects, contractors, and owner-builders, plus an extensive resource section. < BR> Author and photographer Catherine Wanek organized the building of a straw bale greenhouse in 1992 and has been an advocate for straw bale construction ever since. She produced and directed the Building with Straw video series, and spent nearly five years publishing and editing The Last Straw Journal. Her first book, The Art of Natural Building, was published in 2002. Wanek lives in Kingston, New Mexico. < BR>

2 out of 5 stars Nice pictures.......2007-05-20

This book had some good pictures of different SB structures. But, to me that is all there was.

4 out of 5 stars Nice picture book, not a build it manual.......2005-08-24

For your money you'll be getting what amounts to a picture book with several different types of strawbale homes across the US and Canada. There is a small starter section, with pictures, on general construction details.
For each house there will be at least two, sometimes four or five, pages of text and pictures about the owners homes and how they were built. Don't buy this book thinking it's a build it manual, that isn't the case as the information is more of an idea book type presentation. You'll get a little on costs, size and other things including square feet both inside and outside the walls (along with small floor plans of each home) and several very well done photographs.
I found these photos to be the best part of the book as they will either give you some ideas for your own home or at least they'll show you what's out there. Some of the ideas had a Santa Fe look but some had a sharp edged box with lots of glass look (and not much straw either). Most of the homes were not displayed from all angles, just from selected views.
If you're on a strict budget you won't want this book unless you can find a cheap used copy, it's much more of an idea book.

5 out of 5 stars price per square foot included in this book.......2004-04-17

Beautiful book with much needed info..a real treat for the eyes..the best is it gives the cost of contruction for almost all the houses shown...if you want to build a strawbale than this book is one you will want to include in your library..does not give alot of hands on constrution but it does gives you visual ideas of what others have done with their houses..

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs and the down and dirty details.......2003-11-15

This is the first "coffee table" book that shows how exquisitely beautiful straw bale homes can be. It also gives good information on how much they cost, various energy savings you can recieve from a straw bale home and other information on how the various owners and builders built and paid for their homes.

Most of the homes are in the higher-end spectrum and I was disappointed that I didn't see less expensive (but maybe not as fancy) homes included. However I did like the coverage of the co-housing communities who use straw bale building.

Overall, a lovely book that you will drool over if you like straw bale or any other natural building.

4 out of 5 stars Beads and Threads.......2006-03-21

An interesting book based on woven ethnic type designs for jewellary, often major show pieces. Good pictures, lots of info on weaving threads and making up your own patterns, explantions easy to follow, very informative with plenty of detail - how to instructions and graphs to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Unleashed Creativity!.......2005-11-24

"Beads & Threads', by Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes is a fantastic book. I have been beading for about 15 yrs, and wanted to try using a different medium with my beads and this book had so many wonderful ideas of using various threads and also even using other items that I wouldn't have thought of using in the neckpiece. They first show you a beautiful gallery of work, which also gives many ideas for my own neckpieces. What follows is directions on how to design my own necklace, and also how to weave it. I'm anxiously awaiting Helen Banes new book on the same subject. Thank-you for a fantastic book!

3 out of 5 stars Should be titled "Weaving necklaces with a few beads".......2005-10-13

This is really a beautiful well written book. It has wonderful ideas and great instructions if you want to learn one method of making woven jewelry and using some beads as you do this. I take nothing away from the authors or the artists who's work is featured in this book. However, any artist ready to take on this skill of weaving needs about half the pictures(or less) of projects to get the idea of how this jewelry looks. I was looking for SEVERAL ideas for using many different fibers in SEVERAL different styles of beaded jewelry. After reading the reviews, I was sure I had found something like what I wanted. I was disappointed that so few techniques were shown. I would definitely suggest that the publisher offer the option of searching inside the book. If they had, I wouldn't have had to pay the return postage.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases a new technique for making fiber jewelry.......2001-07-04

In Beads And Threads, Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes effectively collaborate to showcase a new technique for making fiber jewelry. Superbly illustrated throughout in full color, each project is clearly laid out, complete with a pattern suited to the needs of even the most novice of students. Beads And Threads is divided into four major chapters: A Gallery of Necklaces; Designing Your Own Necklace: Weaving Your Necklace; Patterns; and Finding or Making the Perfect Beads for Your Necklace. The informative and instructive text is enhanced further with appendices listing "Other Books and Publications"; "Bead Societies"; "Sources of Beads"; "Photo & Illustration Credits"; and a succinct index. If you are looking for a do-it-yourself weekend art, craft, or personal adornment project ideas, try browsing through Diane Fitzgerald and Helen Banes' Beads And Threads!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful new weaving and jewelry technique.......1999-01-26

This is a wonderful book that teaches the reader how to make fantastic beaded neckpieces. If you create and wear any of these pieces, people will stop you on the street to look at them! The instructions are clear and patterns are provided with which to get started. Its a craft technique that does not require a large investment in materials, mostly just interesting beads and pearl cotton.

Frank Einstein has never led a normal life -- as far as he knows -- but lately his topsy-turvy times have been undeniably loony. In this fourth collection chronicling the life of comics' coolest undead guy, Frank goes from holiday giddiness to super-secret paranoia, friends become enemies, and sworn enemies become ... saviors? In this tome of 136 colorful pages, Frank makes amends with a beatnik ghoul, meets Santa Claus, gets his house fixed up, and goes on an unexpected adventure. It turns out fellow undead foes, Mattress and Crept, have gotten themselves in a snag, and it's up to Frank to find out what's up. Mysteries are explained, but there's plenty of confusion to take its place. It's a kooky book -- take a look!

Founder of Wallaces' Farmer, adviser to Theodore Roosevelt, and consultant to Iowa State College, "Uncle Henry" Wallace - perhaps more than any writer since Jefferson - spoke of rural society in terms of its significant role in the success of the American democratic vision. This book fills a gap in the history of Midwestern agriculture and the influence of the farm press.

          4 out of 5 stars neon nastiness.......2002-11-02

I am not sure if this book is a work of fiction, a memoir or merely the mad mutterings of someone who has stayed in the Orient for too long - or some combination of the three. But it sure is a good read, I could not put it down and finished it in one sitting and then went back over the really amusing stuff the next day. Tall tales of life in the neon in which the author, Al Culler, seems as happy taking the ...out of himself as he does the punters and the gals. Also quite informative on the inside life of the bars and what the gals get up to and get away with - I never realised, for instance, that if the gals failed to have a medical check many bars merely fined them rather than sacking them. An order of extra strong condoms was duly made.. Needless to say, I put in an order for his other book, Speedin' and will let you know how I get on with that!

In this outstanding collection of stories and "lessons," Pamela Grim, an emergency medicine physician, reveals the painful truths learned from the daily witnessing of the underside of life, where most who enter are addicts, idiots, drunks, and psychotics whose poor choices have led them to the end of the line. The ER is a more tragic, chaotic, and weird place than any TV show has ever portrayed. A man walks in with a butcher knife imbedded in his skull, a teenage girl asks incredulously, "I'm pregnant?" after delivery, and the best kind of cop dies on the table while his killer is saved in the next room. Grim brilliantly captures the adrenaline-fueled chaos of code calls in inner-city ERs, where the unrelenting pressure puts doctors and nurses alike in a perpetual state of shell shock. In this environment, doctors must make split-second decisions under the specter of malpractice suits and the knowledge that every moment weighs in on whether the patient will live or die. Fortunately, Grim is the sort of storyteller who can make a reader cry then laugh out loud in a matter of pages. She is a no-nonsense doctor--and author--whose compassion and wisdom are as unexpected and brightly illuminated as the resurrection of the 4-year-old with no pulse who was crushed by the family car.

Between the pressure and the bruises left by each death, burnout is inevitable. Grim's response is to head for Nigeria with Doctors Without Borders, and later to Bosnia and a Kosovar refugee camp, where once again she is "awestruck by the suffering God can inflict." The dearth of technology and supplies and the low survival rates make a shocking contrast to the miracles achieved in American hospitals. Grim considers some profound issues--the nature of grief, the humanitarian aid paradox in which helping out can indirectly enable corrupt governments, and the despair of trying to save lives when so many are dying. Ultimately, she realizes that the answer is in the particular; it is saving individual lives that makes her work--and life itself--meaningful. This is one powerful page-turner with the potential to change minds as well as lives. --Lesley Reed

5 out of 5 stars Just here trying to save a few lives.......2007-08-25

This was an excellent book, great material and well written. You could actually put yourself in the authors shoes.

5 out of 5 stars True Picture of the ER.......2007-07-31

As a medical student and a former employee of the emergency department, I found this book to be a very realistic, while heartrending account of what actually occurs in the ER. Dr. Grim lays out a beautiful picture of the unseen (to everyday society) tragedies that occur on a daily basis. I loved her writing style and accounts of her overseas ventures. She painted a picture of a Macedonian refugee camp so vivid, I feel like I have been there. I hope that she continues to write. I think medical students, especially those interested in emergency medicine, and others in the medical field will love this book as much as I did.

          3 out of 5 stars disappointing .......2005-06-16

Overall the book is an OK read - it would have been much better if the author could get over herself. I'm glad she became a doctor and I'm glad she helped out in areas of the world that desperately need medical professionals. If the writting had been more about the situations themselves and less about getting the reader to worship or pity the author then it would have been a good book. Many of her comments made me feel sorry for those who had her as a doctor - I hope that the treatment of those patients was more caring than the write ups.

4 out of 5 stars a grear look at emergancy room life.......2005-02-03

In "Just here trying to save a few lives" Dr. Pamela Grim paints us a vivid picture of life in the ER. As an EMT student I found the book captivating and informative. The book started a little slow but quickly picked up the pace. As we travel with Dr. Grim from hospital to hospital and from country to country we see the struggles and trials that doctors face every day. There was a lot of medical language that, had I not been an EMT student I would have not understood but would still be able to follow the story. Overall this was a very good book and I would recommend it to any one interested in going in to the medical filed or to anyone who is curious of what doctors face in their profession.

4 out of 5 stars Grim determination to make a difference.......2004-09-12

Seasoned ER doctor Pamela Grim gives us a bleak and visceral view of her experiences in the ER and doing voluntary service for Medecins sans Frontieres. Unlike glossy TV programs and other stylised reports from these hostile territories, she does nothing to glamorise her work.

Dr Grim tells us of both the miracles and great "saves" in the ER and the senseless deaths from self-destruction, homicide and accident. She does not sweeten the pill. Her colleagues are cynical, sarcastic and burnt-out; hardened by a daily diet of disaster. Nor does she focus on the big action all of the time - the tension pneumothorax "catch", delivering clapped-out crack babies, cracking the chest - she reminds us of the daily grind of sniffles and sore throats who won't wait to see their GP, of sprained ankles demanding to be seen despite the polytrauma patient in the resus room. She sees patients who have been shot because of drugs; cop colleagues gunned down in the line of duty; and is herself threatened with a gun by an irate sprained ankle patient who is fed up of waiting - before then saving that same man's life when he is taken down by the police. Death, it seems, and ER doctors make no moral judgments.

Understandably, she is ambivalent about her role in the ER department and watching those around her burn out. Volunteering in response to her own burn out, she travels to warzones and alien environments to do what she can as a doctor. In Nigeria, Bosnia and Macedonia she finds herself poorly equipped, despite the organisation's efforts, to deal with disease, displacement and devastation on a large scale. Simple lack of drugs and basic equipment make delivering anything more than basic medical care impossible. She quickly neutralises any romantic notions of "saving the world" and scratches together what she can to save a few lives. In the middle of a meningitis epidemic the team do what they can with oily chloramphenicol, a couple of other drugs and iv lines labelled "TOUCH THIS IV AND YOU DIE". For another endemic disease, tetanus, (which she knows could have easily been prevented with a simple vaccine back home) she finds the limits of her drugs exceeded: there is not enough valium in the hospital to stop the patient's spasms and no quiet, dark room in which he can die. In the grand scheme of things, she can make only the smallest impact, but finds that she can (sometimes) help individuals: the bus driver's daughter, the teacher's mother.

              Book Description

Immediately after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought to restore the honor of the United States with a dramatic act of vengeance: a retaliatory bombing raid on Tokyo. On April 18, 1942, eighty brave young men, led by the famous daredevil Jimmy Doolittle, took off from a navy carrier in the mid-Pacific on what everyone regarded as a suicide mission but instead became a resounding American victory and helped turn the tide of the war. The First Heroes is the story of that mission. Meticulously researched and based on interviews with twenty of the surviving Tokyo Raiders, this is a true account that almost defies belief, a tremendous human drama of great personal courage, and a powerful reminder that ordinary people, when faced with extraordinary circumstances, can rise to the challenge of history.

1 out of 5 stars Poor knowledge of detail.......2007-08-30

I really, really wanted to like this book. I'd just finished Hornfischer's outstanding "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" and wanted some more inspirational reading. I'm about half finished listening to this book in its MP3 version, and have noted the following:
              1) the author has no - and I repeat no - required knowledge of the US Navy. There are many, many small, factual errors that are really annoying - referring to the HMS Repulse as a "cruiser", describing the Japanese torpedoes as "two feet long", etc, etc. Anyone with even a basic knowledge of the US Navy in WW2 should have been given an opportunity to preview this book before publication.
              2) Overuse of military jargon - bombs referred to as "cabbages", torpedoes as "eels" by such a rank amateur was just too much.
              3) this really doesn't apply to the book itself, but the reader on the MP3 version had no idea regarding correct pronunciation of naval terms - (en-sine, indeed.)
I find that when there are so many factual errors in an area that I'm familiar with, I have a tough time accepting the new - often interesting on its face - data that an author brings up. It's too bad that such a terrific topic couldn't have been treated more professionally. I read "Thirty Seconds over Tokyo" as a kid and really was looking for some new information. I blame the editors completely for this second rate attempt.

5 out of 5 stars just a great historical book about an impossible mission.......2007-01-22

This book is wonderful! Gives a sense of the courage needed after pearl harbor and how it was met by young americans. Harrowing!
I can't recommend it any more than A MUST READ. I have sent many to soldiers and friends!

4 out of 5 stars Great History of the Doolittle Raid.......2006-07-23

Here's a compelling and well told history of the daring Doolittle Raid of 1942. Nelson does a good job recounting America's first offensive action against Japan in WWII.

More of a morale booster for America and a psychological defeat for the Japenese, the raid did little actual damage. It did however prove to the world that the Japanese were vulnerable.

This story of the daring men who went on what amounted to a suicide mission is riveting. Nelson takes us through the training for the ultra secret mission, to the actual raid itself, and the following crash landings in China.

Nelson does a very good job of placing these events in the overall context of WWII and follows the fates of all involved up to the present. A little slow at first, The First Heroes rewards persistence. Recommended for anyone interested in WWII.

5 out of 5 stars The First Heroes is a must read.......2006-03-23

The First Heroes by Craig Nelson is a must read for anyone who is interested in history, especially World War Two. It is the story of America's finest pilots getting their first vengeance after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The task seemed impossible: fly bombers off of an aircraft carrier in the Pacific, drop bombs over Tokyo and somehow land in China. The mission didn't go as planned. Only one plane made it to Allied soil and the other 15 crashed in Japanese occupied China, but not before dropping their payload over Japan. It was a daring move but it paid off in the end. The book is full of first hand accounts which bring a sixty year old story back to the present times. It was so good that I read it in about two weeks. It had me from the first page. Instead of focusing on just one main character, Craig Nelson tells the stories of all 100 men involved, giving this unique event many different angles. I only read non fiction books and this one read like a work of fiction, with lots of suspense and surprises at every turn. It shows human suffering and how humans can overcome physical and mental suffering if they have the will to do so. I was also amazed at how the Japanese treated their prisoners of war. They had little respect for anyone who was not their own, something that the western world has a hard time fully understanding. This is a must read for anyone interested in the aviation of the Second World War. Craig nelson weaves an intriguing story.

1 out of 5 stars Not researched but well embellished.......2006-03-04

I was only able to read as far as page 146 before I was turned off by the author's lack of knowlege of the subject. For instance, on the page mentioned above he quotes Lt Joyce as saying "my rear gunner was firing." He did record the fact that the tail guns had been removed and replaced by broom sticks. Where was his editor? Other reviewers have also pointed out other glaring errors committed all before page 146 such as diesel engins, "Billys", and B's taxiing, and so on. The first half of the book left much to be desired, I will not read the rest of the book.

This book is based on the papers delivered at the First International Congress on Toxic Combustion By-Products: Formation and Control held at the University of California, Los Angeles, August 26-29, 1989. The topics explored include areas critical to the development of advanced designs of combustion devices and new control strategies, and to the development and implementation of appropriate government regulations. The papers focus particularly on combustion of waste. This is in response to public concern about further degradation of the environment, long-term health effects, and the popular perception that incineration poses an necessary hazard to both humans and the environment. Other subjects covered include an overview of the emissions, health risks and existing regulations, continuous emissions monitoring and control, processing of solids and liquids, fundamental chemistry, metals emissions, PAH/soot chemistry, gas transport, and advanced combustion and control systems.
