Book Description
All over New York City, hidden behind unassuming historic facades, sits the gigantic machinery of the power stations that once moved the subways. For over a century, the 125,000-pound converters and related equipment of the substations remained largely unchanged, but in 1999 the last manually operated substation was shut down and since then they have been systematically dismantled and sold as scrap.
In 1997, author Christopher Payne was introduced to the substations by an official of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Power Division. Since then, he has rushed to photograph, draw, and write the history of these amazing buildings and their machines before they are completely gone. With virtually unlimited access to the substations, he has developed an intimate bond with the buildings that most people know only in passing. His beautiful photographs and detailed drawings bring these lost treasures to life, while his illuminating text tells their fascinating story. Anyone interested in the art of industrial America or the New York subway will find this book a delight.

New York's forgotten Substations.......2007-08-08
An excellent high quality work at a very reasonable price.
Well written interesting text, superb high quality photographs and professional architectural drawings. A great buy for anyone interested in the subject.
Amazon's rapid response to my order was also impressive. This is the first time I've ordered from Amazon. The book was shipped from stock and arrived just a few days after I placed my order. Excellent service.
Better than I could have imagined........2006-12-13
I'm not an architecture student, or an art fan. I just happen to have an obsession with infrastructure. This book was completely satisfying. It's filled with gorgeous pictures of off-limits places. That alone would have been just a tease, but the author's extensive research pays off for the reader. He fills the book with history and technical details. Worth every penny and then some.
Power book.......2006-10-09
Who would have thought that a collection of buildings containing basically the same thing would have produced such a fascinating book and who but Princeton would take a chance and publish it. It seems to fit right into their quirky line of Americana, which includes, for instance, a history of paint-by-numbers (ISBN 1568982828) a photo tour of the brothels of Nevada (ISBN 1568984189) or a collection of amateur QSL cards (156898281X).
Christopher Payne has done his best to record the contents of these buildings before they are gone forever. His efforts are perfect examples of what industrial archaeology photography should look like, well lit, straightforward and content rich images with fortunately no angled shots, no out-of-focus areas merging into darkness or meaningless close-ups. These photos really tell a story and being well printed (200dpi) on quality paper helps, too.
As well as the fifty-four main photos there are others taken by him and several historical ones in the essay describing the workings of the subway electrical supply (some of the technical drawings included in the essay could have been larger though) and like his photos Payne makes the world of rotary converters, transformers, bus boards and potheads come alive.
All in all a super little book and a good example of how a tiny part of industrial America can become fascinating with well-written words and elegant photography.
Balanced and Beautiful.......2006-06-25
Many photo history books suffer from an imbalance between the strength of the prose and the strength of the photographs. Christopher Payne's New York's Forgotten Substations does not. The writing is crisp, bringing you into the subject matter and explaining the basics of subway power and the history of these substations. The photos capture the magnificence of the substations in they heyday, and the seeming pathos of their abandonment. This is black and white photography at its best. Forgotten Substations is a feast for subway buffs, engineering geeks, and appreciators of industrial aesthetic alike.
A large audience will find a fascinating account.......2003-05-15
New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind The Subway is hard to easily categorize this title, but any with an interest in New York history and culture will find this a fascinating topic - and worthy of a visit. The author was introduced to the substations by an official of the NYC Transit Author's Power Department; he photographed and wrote the history of these buildings, and his photos and drawings embellish a little-known side of New York history. A large audience will find a fascinating account here.

“Lively and accessible...progressing nicely from quick-pose sketches to more ambitious interpretations of both the character and the form of the person one is drawing...covers a variety of media and explores light and shadow, clothing and drapery....[Constance’s] use of cropping, pastels, collage, and monotypes attests to her preference for creative expressions....an outstanding book for public libraries.”—Library Journal.

Not much depth of instruction.......2004-06-29
A common "Warning Word" is found on the cover, that every book buyer should be alerted to. The Warning Word. This time, the word is "COMPLETE". Every art book or how to draw book that I see with this word in the title is not even close to giving COMPLETE instruction. To a book, they mix up the order of instruction, or the author leaves simple, beginning material out, or gives it only briefly and moves on to intermediate instruction, which a beginner can get later.
The standard to which Diane Constance ought to be held is contained in the choice of words for the title: "The COMPLETE Life Drawing Course" [Caps mine, -BB] So is this a "complete" art instruction in figure drawing? No, it isn't. It's just another art "how-to" book sacked up and shoved over the Fast Food counter to go.
Diane Constance gives a terse and peremptory glossing over of the fundamentals of figure drawing, and most pointedly, we are obligated to ask ourselves: "Do we need another HOW-TO figure drawing book at his time?" "Are the published figure drawing books woefully inadequate?"
Well, in fact, some of the popular titles published today are woefully inadequate. Unfortunately, Diane Constance's book "Complete Life Drawing Course" must join the ranks of those cloned texts that offer the same trite superficialities over....and over....and over yet again. At a suggested retail price of $19.95 this book better deliver, and it doesn't, so what's the point? Really great art instruction is already in print, with good anatomy sections included, for far less money.
Begins well but is quite incomplete........2003-11-25
This book starts off with an excellent pictoral discussion on anatomy, with both male and female models in many various posings.
Unfortunately, once one moves past this excellent beginning, the book rapidly becomes unusable by most artists studying their craft outside of a classroom or studio environment...which means the vast majority of artists will find this book of very limited use, and good for theory only.
Far from explaining all media, it shows only a two-page layout of basic tools of the trade...this is a pen, this is a brush, this is an oil crayon, etc...and then moves into the "exercises" which turn out to be essentially useless, as they require the artist to have a live model present. It is astounding to me that with such a beautifully laid out and well written beginning, and such well done exercises, that the author should choose to omit photographs of the models she worked with in the creation of the book. Nowhere at all does the author state that one needs a live model to complete or even perform the exercises that comprise the majority of this art book...and during the exercises, she even suggests asking the model to make various poses. I found this unbelievable...how can you write an art instruction book of this nature and not mention the need for a live model?...and extremely disappointing, as well as very, very frustrating. Now, the book is essentially useless to me in all but theory.
If you are currently, or planning to, take a figure drawing class which will feature a live model, then this book is for you. It is very well written and the photographs, instruction, and exercises are superb for the beginning or intermediate artist, or any artist venturing into anatomy for the first time.
However, if you do not have plans for such a class, I would suggest buying another book on anatomy and anatomically accurate life/figure drawing. As good as this book is at the beginning, sadly, it is not as useful as it could have been if only the author had thought to provide photographs instead of sticking solely to the requirement for a live model. A terrible shortsight in an otherwise excellent artist's book. Definitely a book to have to round out your artist's library. I wish I could like it more than I do, and will attempt to work with it using my own photographs of people in motion, and an artist's mannequin. Good luck!
concise and informative.......2003-04-06
It presents a lot of information very succintly. The book begins with a section on the human body: bones, muscles, movements and balance and progresses into 8 lessons on learning the basics of catching the nude form. It then provides 8 lessons on various ways to draw light (including a couple that have been covered in a basic design class I am taking), 8 lessons in picture making, and additional projects to try.
I have also been attending a figure drawing group, and have found the instruction contained herein is invaluable to understanding what 'information' is needed for short poses and long poses, and all of the ways one can accurately capture the essence of the human form.
Bravo!.......2002-05-07
Wonderfully done! Starts out with basic anatomy and proportions and shows how these translate in a moving figure. Large clear photos cover both male and female anatomy. The majority of the book is then dedicated to teaching you to develop your own style through various media and then critique your work. A brilliant book for both beginning and intermediate artists. Would be cheap at twice the price. A definate must have!
A great how to book for figures and life drawing.......2001-11-29
I wish I'd found this book before I'd bought other, less complete and helpful ones! This book shows techniques and all media and is a bargain! I was glad I got it to review before I took a figure drawing class because it helped me to do much better.

Book Description
Designed for the critical enthusiast as well as anyone who is beginning an interest in the Civil War, Book One of the Civil War Soldier Series takes the reader on a journey to the past to explore the life of soldiers and civilians alike. The opening year of the conflict is vividly described from both Confederate and Union perspectives.
Holly Springs, Mississippi resident Joshua Campbell, joins the famed 17th Mississippi Regiment with his friend Zeke Owens, in the first rush of volunteers. Explore the life of a Civil War soldier as he endures the rigors of camp life and drill, in preparation for coming battle. Meet his friends and members of his `mess', always under the watchful eye of a veteran Irishman, Sergeant Timothy Ferrall. Experience the first frightening clash of arms at Manassas and the thrilling charge at Balls Bluff. The young soldier will find comfort in the arms of a rough-hewn country girl, though beguiled by a member of the Virginia aristocracy.
Across the Potomac, Elihu Hawthorne, Massachusetts Congressman, learns to navigate the new political landscape created by civil war. Finding his influence limited in early 1861, he embarks on a path that will lead to some disgrace, yet allow him to emerge in a position of prominence by year's end.
Though their paths intersect in dramatic fashion, the lives of these two protagonists mark the fortunes of their respective causes.
Rich in historical detail and compellingly told, readers will delight in crackling battle scenes, the maneuvering of Washington political circles, and the appearnce of historical figures trhoughout the book.

An intriguing, albeit fictional, account of the American Civil War.......2006-06-09
A Time For Glory: 1861 by R. B. Greenwalt is an intriguing, albeit fictional, account of the American Civil War and the lives of soldier and civilians caught up in that tumultuous time. Following the life of Joshua Campbell through his experience with the Confederate army through battle, leadership, a soldier life and love, A Time For Glory: 1861 then carries readers over to the life and experiences of Elihu Hawthorne, a Massachusetts Congressman affected by the radical vision of the republican party, and a perpetual fear of capture by the enemy. An original, well crafted, and entertaining novel showcasing quite diverse perspectives of Civil War combatants, A Time For Glory: 1861 is especially commended to readers and would make a popular addition to community library collections.

loss in translation?.......2001-12-31
Ralf Keonig is one of the most popular cartoonists in Germany and his books in German are quite popular amongst both gay and straight populations. This book has now been translated into English. Although the translation is good, I found the story not nearly as compelling as my German friend counterparts. It is a fun read, however, and perhaps it is simply that some of the humor is lost in the translation.
The Gay Double Ten Year Itch.......2000-07-14
This is a full-length black & white graphic novel with strong adult gay content. I found it to be outrageously funny, sad, real and poignant. It chronicles a German gay couple that has been together for ten years, as both of them get the itch for something different. One for his piano student, who, as fate would have it, happens to be coming out at the same time to the surprise of his family & admirer. The other, for a mountain of man, quite bearish, a construction worker from Barcelona who is ostensibly straight, but not narrow. The ending is poetic, and refreshingly real.

Book Description
In the decades between the French Revolution and the first stirrings of liberalism in the 1830s, German political culture defined itself apart from that of its neighbors to the west. Focusing on the career of Johann Cotta, the preeminent publisher of his generation, this book offers a lens through which we can more fully understand these turbulent years. Cotta is a familiar figure in the history of German letters, but his public life has never been studied comprehensively. He financed and directed the Allgemeine Zeitung of Augsburg, which would become one of the great European newspapers of the nineteenth century. He was the first German to convert money and cultural prestige into political power by means of the press.
Cotta and his colleagues emerge not as liberals, but as characteristic figures of the Reform era. Their aim was to define and institutionalize a realm of thought and action beyond the control of the state, but short of opposed to it--a "public" realm in which intellectual independence and political loyalty would be equally well served.

Book Description
An African Adventure is a story of fear, joy, danger and love, but mostly love, love for a continent, a people and the God whom they try to serve. It is also a story of courage, the courage of young people mostly, young people who are struggling with the loss of their families to AIDS and civil war, young people who face a brighter future but still have to deal with a devastating past. It is a journey, a journey not only of miles but of the soul. It is a journey that will lead Ralph and Jeanette Reaves to the beautiful mountains of Rwanda and carry them through the sometimes heartbreaking task of caring for over 115 orphans in Uganda. It is a journey that will bring them to their knees in despair and teach them that to survive, they have to lean totally on God.

Great Family Study.......2006-03-27
I studied this book in a class I took for college. It is so amazing and a great resource guide in studying the proclamation. Surprising new outlooks that will make you stop and ponder. I recommend it to anyone.
excellent encouragement and direction.......2005-09-03
If you are like millions of parents around the world- you know how difficult raising children is as well as trying to keep a family close and strong. This book not only gives encourageing suggestions for marital success but also gives excellent guidance for raising children. It helps you learn about the most necessary ways to develop trust and love in all family relationships. I have given it as a gift to all my family and friends who truly have a sincere desire to succeed in their familiy relationships.
Well written and practical.......2003-03-11
Not much I can add to the first Review. It combiens practical advice with modern statistics and makes for a excellent read. Highly recommended.
A Fantastic Family Resource!!!.......2002-12-13
Strengthening our Families is a collection of essays centering around the 1995 "Proclamation on the Family" by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). This book is targeted to the LDS audience, and thus many of the essays assume some familiarity with the teachings of the LDS church.
The eight sections of the book are: 1) The proclamation and gospel doctrine on marriage and family, 2) Marriage as the foundation of family life, 3) The sacred responsibilities of parents and extended family, 4) Proclamation principles for successful marriages and families, 5) Individuals and family life, 6) Understanding and overcoming adversity in family life, 7) Measures to maintain and strengthen marriages and families, and 8) The proclamation and the world.
Within these sections are numerous chapters and essays covering a wide range of topics such as preparing for marriage, intimacy, wholesome family recreation, moving forward after divorce, issues with family law, preventing and healing from abuse, dealing with illness and death, building and strengthening the family, and many others.
What impresses me the most about this book is its strength in presenting up-to-date scholarly research on families while at the same time providing an immense amount of practical guidance and suggestions. For example, there are chapters packed full of ideas on what can be done around different times of the year as family traditions; a chapter is devoted to ideas to make local church congregations more family friendly; another deals suggests ways to easy the burden of a heavy travel schedule for one of the spouses. It is a textbook and a how-to guide in one.
I have suggested this book to many friends and family. I give it a 5+!!
Book Description
Originally published to much acclaim in 1980, this is the story of the legendary German battleship that sunk the pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood, on May 24, 1941, and three days later was hunted down and sunk by the British during one of the most dramatic pursuits in naval history. Told by a German naval officer who witnessed both sinkings, the book chronicles the brief but sensational career of what was thought to be the grandest weapon of the Third Reich. Burkard Baron von Müllenheim-Rechberg, the Bismarck's top-ranking survivor, tells the battleship's story from commissioning to the moment when the captain gave a final salute and went down with his ship.
The epic battle between the two great enemy ships captured the imagination of an entire generation and became a popular subject for movies and songs. With the discovery a few years ago of the Bismarck's sunken hull off the coast of France, worldwide attention has focused again on the famous ship. Reprinted now in paperback for the first time, the work presents the human dimensions of the event without neglecting the technical side and includes information on rudder damage and repair, overall ship damage, and code breaking. The book also provides insights into the author's life as a prisoner of war in England and Canada and the friction that existed between the Nazis and non-Nazis Germans in the camps. Such a personal look at one of the most famous sea encounters in the history of World War II makes absorbing reading.
Customer Reviews:
great insight on what happened on the Bismarck.......2007-08-01
I did like the narrative and it gave me a glimpse into what went on inside the Bismarck and her crew. Many of the photograhs were a first for me. I especially liked Appendix D, "The Rudder Damage: Were all Possibilities of Repair Exhausted?". Apparently the Bismarck was doomed from the start, but this may have been hindsight on the part of the author.
As for Appendix F "A Break in the Code", the tome was written before information was released indicating that the British were indeed monitoring most, if not all, communications of the Kriegsmarine. I refer to the two volumes of "Hitler's U-Boat War" by Clay Blair. The Americans were also monitoring the movements of the Bismarck, possibly in violation of international law.
The only reason I gave the book 4 stars is because the author related his opinions on the politics and his superiors possibly after the war. I wonder how he thought during the war. Too many apologies for the Nazi regime for my taste. I agree that the regime was inefficient. This may have been common among many authors who were involved on the German side looking back.
I would recommend this book in addition to the several books that have been written on the Bismarck in the last few decades.
A standout in the crowded field of historical memiors.......2006-08-17
V. Mullenheim-Rechberg executes brilliantly where others have failed. This is one memoir where the author maintains a confident balance between his own personal history and the larger event in which he took part.
Make no mistake--this is his story, yet one where the ship and its crew reamin the focus. An understanding that he was but one, small aspect of each seems to guide his writing throughout. Moreover, he is careful to call out what he can only qualify as recollection and what he has culled from the established historical record. The result is a practically seamless recounting that should satisfy readers who seek personal insights into the short operational history of the Bismarck and those who crave details on the ship's construction, crew composition, and blow-by-blow accounts of Dennmark Strait and the final attack that lead to its ultimate fate.
His chapter describing the last minutes as the crew abandoned ship take on a downright cinematic feel. The clarity there is of moments he could not shake and of people he would not forget. It's deeply personal, yet he provides both himself and the reader emotional breathing space by weaving in views of the operational action around the ship itself. This intensifies every personally-infused vignette that he presents and ensures that none are lost in the wash of mass human loss.
The author makes particularly handy work of his footnotes, sometimes using them to personally answer some of what he believes are significant misnomers about the ship's history--and his own. The footnotes are clearly -his- space, and he does not hesitate to answer some of what he feels are personal attacks that various other authors have made on his character and conduct. Still, he shies away from pettiness and cheap indignancy here. His tone is measured throughout, and he exactingly cites the sources that fuel his commentary--leaving the reader a chance to further explore the issues. After all, he was a lawyer and diplomat after the war. It shows.
Recommended highly for those who enjoy their history presented in a narrative fashion.
WELL TOLD TRUE STORY OF AMAZING PROPORTIONS FROM THE HIGHEST RANKING SURVIVING OFFICER ABOARD THE BISMARCK.......2006-05-26
FIRST THOUGHTS: EMOTIONAL WAR DRAMA OF LEGENDARY STATUS
The Bismarck, like the Titanic before her, went down on her maiden voyage in the North Atlantic with a great loss of life. Though both ships went on to become legends, the Bismarck was one that went down via the concerted effort of a large portion of the British fleet. Due to its being the flagship of the third reich and symbol of its 'superior' achievement the mission to destroy the Bismarck was a vital necessity to the British and a desperate race for survival for its German crew. In the end, there is little to feel good about the sinking of a vessel with over two thousand men aboard, only 115 whom were saved. Worse still, this tragedy followed the sinking of the Hood by the Bismarck just several days earlier with just a handful of survivors from the Hood. All in all a very nasty business, but an epic piece of real human history.
IN A NUTSHELL:
Battleship Bismarck: A Survivor's Story (Bluejacket Books)
by Burkard Baron Von Mullenheim-Rechberg, is another fine 'Naval Institute Press Publication' and a terrific account of the Bismarck's short life. The author, Burkard Baron Von Mullenheim-Rechberg was first, Captain Lindemann's adjutant and later the gunnery officer in charge of the aft range-finder. His rank was 'Oberleutnant zur See', or the equivalent of Lieutenant, in the US Navy. Von Mullenheim-Rechberg was on board before the beginning and was there after the end to become a prisoner-of-war. Both before and after are included in his expanded accounts in this "THE NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION - 1990".
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT:
Von Mullenheim-Rechberg takes us on-board the Bismarck as he is introduced to his new commanding officer, Captain Lindemann. It is 1940 and he is the Captain's adjutant as fitting out and trials get under way for the newly launched super-dreadnought. These prelimary maneuvers are included in detail. Von Mullenheim-Rechberg does give us insights into his Captain, Lindemann, Admiral Lutjens [fleet commander] and something about Adolf Hitler who did visit the ship. All three men will play an important role in the story that unfolds.
BUT THE STORY DOESN'T END THERE -
A lot happened to the Bismarck its crew, the Hood, and the world in less than a week, and much of it is covered within this volume, first hand.
The real mission of the battleship Bismarck.......2003-05-06
The author, and one time adjutant to Captain Lindermann, the commanding officer of the Bismarck, reveals the real mission of the battleship which is a new concept to most. It was very exciting to read the details from the beginning of the battleship including the sailors and officers, the training, and sailing to the Atlantic. Although it would have been nice if even more details could have been included, but perhaps space and memory prevented it. The author did mention that most of his experiences and service had to be written from memory since he was prevented from recording classified and secret information. Particularly interesting is his description and feelings of being a POW inside the POW camps; his repatriation, a person returning to his defeated homeland, once a proud nation, and how a former POW can fit into the new and recovering society. Lacking many technical details that we would liked to have read about, this is still an excellent book. To be able to read about the battleship from the German side of the ship and war, is invaluable. Excellent book and highly recommended.

Although the book started a little slow and dry, it turned out to be a very outstanding book. The book was written from an officer who survived the battle, and it doesnt get any better than this. The author did a lot of research, and the facts were correct. But the most interesting feature was that you got to see what was going on in the German mind during the entire operations. The author started with a brief history of the Bismark, a brief background of his own career, as well as Admiral Lutjens and the captain of the ship. He posed many interesting "what if" questions through out the final cruise of the battleship. The content and the material of the book was well organized, flowed well, and it was an easy book to read: 250 pages, short chapters, maps, many photographs. If you are tired of reading books about this subject from British or American authors, then this is a refreshing change of perspective. Very highly recommended!

Bismarck's Story As Told By The Senior Surviving Officer.......2006-10-11
Burkard, Baron von Mullenheim-Rechberg was a Kapitanleutnant (full lieutenant)in the Kriegsmarine and the senior of the 115 men who survived the Bismarck's sinking in May, 1941. As such, his story would be a good addition to the story of Exercise Rhine, the breakout of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen into the North Atlantic and their subsequent chase by the Royal Navy. The fact that von Mullenheim-Rechberg was the after fire-control officer (and the backup for the ship's gunnery officer) means he has much to offer from an operational point of view. But that's not what makes this book as important as it is.
The Baron was Captain Lindemann's adjutant from the time he reported to the Bismarck until she began working up in the eastern Baltic and his duties as a fire-control officer superseded his work with the Captain. He knew, either personally or professionally, all of the department heads and senior officers in the battleship as a result of this service. In turn, that knowledge enables him to paint a very human picture of the officers and crew of the mightiest German warship ever built that is very different from what notable naval writers like C.S. Forester and Samuel Eliot Morison have done. His well written and ably translated prose changes the picture of the Bismarck from a deadly chunk of Nazi steel into a very human yet efficient fighting machine with vices and virtues, manned by real people and not cardboard cutouts and bringing her to life the way George Grider did the USS Wahoo, the way Dick O'Kane did the USS Tang or Commodore Henry Grattidge the Queen Mary. It's clear that he, the Captain, her officers and her crew loved the Bismarck; and each man who served in her gave her a bit of his soul and brought her to life.
The fact that he also was Fleet Admiral Lutjens' gunnery officer when Lutjens was a captain and had command of the cruiser Karlsruhe between the wars means that although Lutjens was not a demonstrative man, von Mullenheim-Rechberg knew him in a professional capacity. These acquaintances and friendships, plus his intimate knowledge of the ship herself, enable the Baron to speculate on the reasons behind the actions taken by the Captain and the Admiral in a way not possible for any other writer who has ever approached the subject, from Forester to Shirer. One thing I like about his writing style is that he states very clearly what he knows from his own personal experience; what he learned from talking to his brother officers both before the sinking and after the rescue; what he learned from archival information; and what are his own speculations.
The result is that his book is clear, concise and precise. It goes a long way toward dispelling the image promoted by the movie Sink the Bismarck! of a battleship manned by fanatical Nazi robots motivated solely by advancement of National Socialist ideals. She was crewed by well trained German sailors and officers, not terribly different from the crews of the ships that hunted her down after she sank HMS Hood and crippled HMS Prince of Wales, as the British officers and seamen themselves acknowledged. His timeline, stating what hits by which weapons occurred when and where, also significantly alter the 'official' legend as promulgated by the Royal Navy and Hollywood.
It's very difficult to dispute what happened to the Bismarck with a man who was aboard her from start to finish. Baron von Mullenheim-Rechberg's research is impeccable and unimpeachable. His point of view is unique and unassailable. This is a book that students of the psychology of fighting men, students of military leadership, and military historians will read again and again, gaining insights with each new reading. We owe the Baron a vote of sincere thanks for what is clearly a labor of love for his ship and a labor of duty to his lost comrades in bringing the Bismarck to life again for us to appreciate and understand.

Advances in Cancer Research continues the series' goal of publishing timely and authoritative reviews in the broad field of cancer research. Graves and Petersen begin the volume with a review of ets proteins and their role in biological specificity. Chapter 2 by Boshoff and Weiss discusses Kaposi's sarcoma and its associated herpesviruses. Chapter 3 by Taipale and colleagues discusses the ways in which the effects of TGF-B can be targeted through its deposition to the extracellular matrix in a latent form. Petersen and colleagues present their research on breast cancer from the phenotypic differentiation standpoint in Chapter 4. The clinical, pathological, and genetic characteristics of hereditary renal carcinoma are reviewed by Zbar and Lerman in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6, Ellem and co-workers discuss the numerous ways in which metastatic cells escape immune killing. Chapter 7 by Kramer et al. Concludes the volume with a discussion on the role of apoptosis via CD95 in liver, colon, and hematopoetic cells.
