Book Description

Forget all the old rules about what furniture goes with what. Old and New encourages you to trust yourself-if it looks good, don't be afraid to combine a 1950's metal chair with a 19th century gilded French table. Katherine Sorrell takes you through the home room by room, showing how to combine antique, retro and modern objects to create spaces that reflect your spirit. Additional highlights on second-hand pieces found at flea markets and swap meets help you train your eye to search out the special pieces from among the throng. Old and New is an inspirational guide to combining old and new with confidence and style. Katherine Sorrell shows how introducing unexpected and individual elements - an old portrait, a piece of 1960's glass, a gilt-framed mirror that belonged to grandma - can add interest to your home. Spotting a gem at a market or a garage sale is satisfying, and lots of fun. Even better, you won't see it anywhere else - unlike items bought at the mall. The first section,

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful look at a gorgeous state.......2000-09-23

Atkeson & Ross capture the beauty of this state in their photography and words. I lived in Oregon 20 years ago and every time I look through the pictures in this book, I'm reminded of its beauty. I never get tired of looking at these photos. The book is split up into several sections: The Oregon Coast (which in itself is a rare treasure), the Columbia River, the Western Valleys (including Salem & Portland), the Cascades (including a couple shots of Crater Lake), and Central Oregon.

While the only true way to view Oregon's beauty is to visit, this book gives an excellent idea of what it's like to live there. Atkeson has some truly marvelous and at times breathtaking pictures contained in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Enthralling beauty of known and hidden locations.......2000-05-29

Oregon III is a gorgeous display of the Oregon coast, waterfalls, fast flowing creeks, brooks, rain and mist. The photographer has sumputuously captured the essence of Oregon: her unending supply of known and hidden bodies of water are a wondrous thing that can be found throughout this stunning state, vividly presented in this outstanding volume. The Pacific Ocean is detailed in all its grandeur of cliffs, jutting rocks, and chilling waters. The undulating coastal beaches offer thousands of rich greens, cool, damp browns, ocean blues and whitecap whites in unending discoveries that take the travelor's breath away at every bend in the road, every view to be found. When a travelor heads inland from the coast, there is the Oregon coastal range to meander through. Off the beaten path are "lost" creeks and water falls that tumble along as they have for thousands of years, all but forgotten unless the travelor stops and walks through the trees, sometimes only a few feet from the highway. Here one may find rich mosses embracing the rocks and boulders, pebbles, and fallen trees that border on a creek hurrying somewhere, laughing with the breezes. So enchanting, one might expect to see fairies or other mystical creatures presiding over a lost kingdom. The photography and text invites the reader to imagine these enticing treasures with deserved pride. The creators of this book take you to the Cascade Range. Don't be surprised to find deep crevices with water trickling from above. If you decide to to traverse such a crevice be wary of the freezing waters that occupy these fissures. The rocks and boulders will be slippery with wet algae or the thousands of years of being splashed on from the falling waters. The coolness will invigorate you as you find yourself succumbing to the pleasure these photographs provide for you. The photography and beautifully written text will take you away momentarily, but you won't find any real satisfaction until you've experienced the reality which is Oregon. When you view this book, you'll know you've had an overwhelming experience, and everytime you open its cover you'll feel Oregon calling, calling. calling..............

    Book Description

Volume III in Robertson's Encyclopedia of Western Railroad History series. This book catalogs virtually every railroad that owned or operated ten or more miles of track as a common carrier in Oregon and Washington. Text, maps, charts, and historic photographs create an invaluable resource for railroad history students and enthusiasts.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Packed with facts........2000-04-22

This book is a great resource for finding facts of fallen northwestern shortlines and predecessor railroads. I have found the facts to be mostly accurate, though they do not always match to some of the more well-read books about the larger railroads in the region. The biggest complaint is that it is visually unappealing, and could be a little more 'polished': no color pictures, and fairly few black and white pictures. Still, it is packed with charts, graphs and valuable company stats and info.

4 out of 5 stars Get your kicks on Route ... 99?.......2004-02-06

Route 66 has all the glamour -- songs, movies, web sites galore. It's an icon of American car culture. Its sister, U.S. Highway 99, on the other hand, doesn't get no respect. But as this volume shows, 99 is more than just 66 upside-down.

This book, the third in the "That Ribbon of Highway" series, follows Highway 99 from the Oregon-California border north to the Canada line (the first two books take it through California). In some places, 99 is a significant urban thoroughfare. In others, its track is almost forgotten. But along the way, Jill Livingston and Kathryn Golden Maloof reveal the often surprising wealth of history, engineering, culture, and nostalgia that line the route. An appendix knits old 99 together from one end to the other, with directions and local highlights for anyone adventurous enough to make the drive. They make the trip sound worthwhile.

Living as I do a half-block from Highway 99, it was hard to think of the road as being as interesting as it apparently is. But now I even have a little affection for the old thing. This book is a great one to keep handy in the glove compartment. Who needs to head off down Route 66 when we have our own transportation and cultural milestone right here?

    Book Description

The majority of Portland's classic houses are still standing, a rich legacy and essential link to a time of stunning architectural accomplishment. This lavishly illustrated volume features more than 300 residences representing twenty-three distinct architectural styles from Greek Revival, Queen Anne, and Tudor to Bungalow, Prairie, Craftsman, and the uniquely regional Northwest Style.

In a fascinating home tour, the history of the city comes to life as well, with key information about the architects, original owners, and distinguishing features of each structure. These homes are the work of the most talented architects of Portland's first century, and each reflects the careful blending of national and international influences with local trends and tastes. In more than 200 plans and drawings and over 600 photographs both historical and contemporary, Classic Houses of Portland, Oregon, presents both the houses that remain and some vanished glories of the past. All take on a new importance today, as historical treasures and as exemplars of design values and quality that are now so rare. A useful appendix lists the houses by neighborhood for those who wish to explore the riches of Portland's architectural heritage.

    5 out of 5 stars Superbly Done.......2007-09-11

At first blush, the following may sound like what the late SPY magazine referred to as "logrolling." What I mean is that when I began researching a book about Portland architecture, the gentleman I most wanted to consult on the topic was William J. Hawkins, III. He is well known for his erudition, depth of knowledge, and courtliness, and I was fortunate to get him to assist me with my project.

I mention all that in the interest of full disclosure. As to this book, like any researcher, I am pleased when I can find a comprehensive and reliable reference. And when it's as nicely written and attractively laid out as this book, well, that's when research stops being a job and it turns into a pleasure. Superbly done.

5 out of 5 stars A grand tour of over 300 venerable residences representing twenty-three architectural styles .......2005-10-12

Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, Classic Houses Of Portland, Oregon 1850-1950 is a grand tour of over 300 venerable residences representing twenty-three architectural styles including Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Bungalow, the regional Northwest style, and many more. A brief history of each house is given; sometimes floor plans are offered, to help the reader fully appreciate the distinct ambience of the dwellings. Classic Houses Of Portland, Oregon 1850-1950 offers a marvelous, sweeping, informative tour which as enjoyable for non-specialist general readers as it is for architectural student, professionals, and historians.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful architecture reference!.......2005-08-09

This book not only provides a thorough history of Portland's development through the years, but also a comprehensive explanation of the characteristics and backgrounds of varying styles of architecture. Great coffee table read, and if you live in Portland, an excellent guide to discovering the city's many architectural treasures.

3 out of 5 stars Great subject matter, poor format.......2001-04-28

I have no problem with the material in this book. The only thing I don't like is the index. I know that is petty, but with a book like this it is important. In the book you can look up houses by neighborhood but there is not a reference that shows the page number. Why is this bad? Lets say I wanted to go for a walk and look at some old Portland architecture. If the index were set up properly I could look at which neighborhood I was going to and then reference the page to see if it was still standing (very important) and if it was something I really wanted to look at!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Portland Houses 1850-1950.......1999-12-25

This beautiful volume examines the first century of Portland's domestic architecture with a critical but sympathetic eye. Many of its finest examples have disappeared in all but photos, and others exist only in misshapen form, but the author is able to recall the grace, dignity, pretension and whimsy which went into their original design. This is a book for both new and old residents who may have decided that our "Stumptown" had little adornment in its early years, and proves that Portland was already a place of discernment and competitive display long before the 19th Century turned, when Seattle was a fishing camp and jumping off point to Alaskan gold. Besides the implicit social and artistic history lesson, the book's black and white photos are a memorable eyeful for anyone who loves American homes, furnishings, or decoration. A very rich read, indeed.

                              Book Description

In 1939, tiny Finland waged war-the kind of war that spawns legends-against the mighty Soviet Union, and yet their epic struggle has been largely ignored. Guerrillas on skis, heroic single-handed attacks on tanks, unfathomable endurance, and the charismatic leadership of one of this century's true military geniuses-these are the elements of both the Finnish victory and a gripping tale of war.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Winter War in english.......2007-10-11

My mother was evacuated from Karelia at the age of 15 years and my father fought in the Winter War. My Finnish parents emigrated to South Africa and I was born here. Therefore my dominant language is english and my sons speak no Finnish. This is a wonderful book to pass on this story to my english speaking children. It is easy to understand and interesting to read. It reads like an entertaining novel. I also hope that it can bring this story and the case for the return of Karelia to the wider world.

A good read but badly needs a post-Cold War update. This book is about a conflict between Russia and Finland, but the only Russian source listed in the "Notes on the Sources" (there is no bibliography) is the English translation of the memoirs of Khruschev, who didn't even participate in the Winter War. Other than a few short, atmospheric accounts by Russian soldiers taken from earlier English or Finnish books, no other Russian source is cited, leaving us almost wholly dependent on Finnish historians and the memoirs of Finnish commanders. This is not a scholarly approach.
Maybe there just weren't any other Russian sources available; or maybe they were only available in Russian (which the author does not know, although he is rightly proud of having mastered Finnish). All that may have been a tolerable excuse in 1991 (when this book came out), but the Russian state archives are now open to all, and certainly much more material has been translated into English in the past 16 years. At the very least, Trotter could speak to some Russians. He found Finnish veterans to interview, and I bet some of their Russian counterparts can also still be found among the WWII veterans who totter around public parks in Russia every May 9.
But to find, you have to look, and what's disappointing is that I have no sense the author feels any need to seek out more significant sources from the other side.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Overview of a Special War between Very Special People.......2007-05-15

Although I was raised in the 70s by uncles full of admiration of what the Finns did to the Russians for three months it is still a profound dissapointment that few people know, and even fewer people care about this profound struggle of 3 Million Finns -- a free people -- against the tyranny of Stalinst Russia.

For a nation this small to have the stomach to thumb their noses at the Russians and then to systematically cut their attacks to ribbons -- inflicting colonial war casualties on the Russians -- it truly one of the David against Goliath matches in history.

But there is more to the traditional interpretation notion of the "plucky Finns" and the "incompetent Russians:" Finns eventually did succumb to the inevitable onslaught of the Russians. There were cases of the Finns actually breaking from the front, and Russians actually adapting tactics to overcome the Finnish ability to use their understanding of their own geography to dominate the Russians. That is perhaps not so hard to believe. What is harder to believe is miracles such as the battle of Soussalmi -- where Finnish ski troops cut to pieces 30,000 Russians for the total of 1,700 Finnish dead.

The book is an overview only and does cover the various stages of the war -- the initial and failed Russian Offensive of December, the holding pattern of January and the final onslaugth that brought the end for Finland. But the book does not pretend to be a total overview of the fighting on the front -- on that point there still needs to be a definitive English edition of this war such as what Norman Davis' "Rising 44" did for the Warsaw Insurrection.

There is also not enough background on the political developments surrounding the war and the geopolitical drivers of policy (the actions of the Western allies are a bit bewildering to those uninitiated in a good understanding of the history of these times).

There is also a good chapter on Mannerheim. This man, so long assciated with both the fighting spirit of Finland is often equated totally as the heart of Finn resistance. His personality was in fact authoritarian, problematic and a direct result of the Tsarist officer corps he was raised within and whose spirit he imbided.

A good read and well worth your time.

                              5 out of 5 stars great reading.......2007-05-14

awesome reading of a awesome moment in our recent history. How finland could survive this war?? David vs Goliath. but not all was romantic, finland has to make a lot of concesions, and they "lost" too the war in a certain way. its the best example of how always both sides lost in a war

this war has been forgotten over the years, and with this book is posible to remember or know for first time one of the most heroic moment in our history. a fight for freedom and for independence.

                              I loved the book

This history is a testament to the value of a highly trained military force. The Finns accomplished very much with very little, in the face of a massive Soviet invasion at the outset of World War II. Despite Finland's small population, and poorly supplied armed forces, they held their ground against an incredible onslaught of modern weaponry.
The Soviets had Finland vastly outnumbered in troops, artillery, armored vehicles, aircraft, ships, and all manner of supplies. However, most of the Soviet troops were pathetically trained cannon-fodder, wasted in enormous human-wave assaults against fortified positions (very typical of all communist regimes). The Soviet officer corps had been recently liquidated in concentration camps at Stalin's oders!
The Finnish soldier was generally a well-trained reservist, adept at marksmanship, wilderness survival, camoflage, skiing, and all pertainent infantry skills. Finland greatly lacked most of the modern weaponry possessed by the Soviets, but frequent raids on the enemy bolstered their supplies. In general, all Finnish forces, air, land, and sea inflicted terrible damage on a much larger invading force.
Meanwhile, the international community cried out against the Soviet invasion...but did very little to actually assist Finland. Disgusted with their indecisive government, some 8000 Swedish military personnel "took leave" to help their neighbors, but it was too late. Finland's military commander, the famous Karl Gustaf Mannerheim, did manage to negotiate a peace which kept the U.S.S.R. from occupying most of Finland, but large regions of territory were lost.
This book describes all aspects of the Winter War in great detail, from individual accounts to major units. Here are some of the highlights:
-The aggressive and ingenious tactics of the Finns, such as 2 man night-raids on skis. One man carried a Soumi submachinegun (excellent weapon), the other a pistol and flashlight. Both had grenades. They would sneak up to the Russian trenches, flash-blind the enemy with the light, and strafe the trench, toss grenades, and be off before the panicing Soviet troops knew what hit them. Soviet soldiers learned to fear the Finns!
-Read how Finland's small airforce knocked disproportionate numbers of enemy aircraft out of the sky!
-Creative improvisation by Finnish troops on the battlefield, in attack and defense!

                                                      Book Description

There is an urgent need to assess the impact of studies in neuroscience and animal behaviour on how we are to think about ourselves. In this book three scientists and three philosophers offer a response to this need by engaging in a stimulating debate that transcends the usual boundaries between scientific and philosophical enquiry. Originating from university seminars held in Oxford over many years, each author takes a highly developed position; the scientists argue with each other quite as much as with the philosophers, and vice versa. The result is a very unusual debate which is equally accessible to philosophers and scientists. The central theme is the significance and nature of goal-directed and intentional behaviour. At one extreme, David McFarland, Reader in Animal Behaviour at the University of Oxford, brings into radical question the need for either of these concepts, at least in the scientific study of animal behaviour. At the other extreme, the Oxford philosopher, Alan Montefiore, argues that such concepts are indispensable to any explication of the meaningful use of language and that we must therefore acknowledge their importance in understanding the nature of human behaviour.

                                                        Book Description

Goal-directed movement is central to the relationship between brain and behavior in humans and other animals. This book presents a detailed investigation of the topic, one that integrates psychology and physiology. The author's account is based on a large body of experimental data from human
and animal work, with particular emphasis on clinical cases. It probes such questions as: Are complex movements organized on the same mode as simple ones? How rigidly organized are coordinated actions like orienting or grasping? Where do visual feedback signals arise? The author's work takes
into account the growing acceptance of the idea that movements are not directly dependent upon sensory events, but that they are governed by internal representations which are built according to specific, experimentally accessible rules.

                                                            Description:
Recent electrophysiological studies have shown that the human electroencephalographic mu rhythm is suppressed during the observation of actions performed by other persons, an effect that may be functionally related to the behaviour of so-called ''mirror neurons'' observed in area F5 of nonhuman primates. Because mirror neuron activity has been reported to be functionally specific to object-oriented actions, the present study was designed to determine if the human mu rhythm also exhibits this property. EEG measurements were obtained from 12 normal subjects while they observed either a precision grip of a manipulandum or an empty grip using the same hand position. Our results showed that the magnitude of the mu rhythm was significantly lower for the object grip condition than for the empty grip condition. These data support the notion that the human mu rhythm indexes a brain system that is functionally comparable to the monkey mirror neuron system. We propose that nonobject-directed actions may result in representational schemas that are either different or less salient than motorically equivalent actions that are directed toward objects.
