Excellent book about Eastern Tibet and its art treasures........2002-03-07
It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in that part of Tibet, and not just about the art, but about the daily life of Khampa Tibetans, and the land. The author also included some history of that area . There are very few books about this part of the world, which was opened up for foreigners travel only since 2000. I myself travelled there that year and the trip was an eye-opener.
The author's writing is easy to read, even when it comes to technical things about the preservation of murals. If there is anything I have to wish for better, it would probably be that some of the photos are not as clear as it can be, but that just demonstrated one of the challenges the author had to deal with. She did not even have freedom to document the restoration project. Many of her films were confiscated by the police for the silliest of reasons.

Beautiful photography, vibrant colors.......1999-08-07
Photographs encompass landscapes of endless sands & rocks of many different hues. Impressive natural sandstone sculptures are also displayed. You even get a glimpse of the petroglyphs & ruins of ancient peoples.
I fell in love with a spectacular waterfall flowing into most gorgeous turquoise waters I have ever seen. Meadows of golden prickly pear cactus flowers & fields of brilliant orange poppies took my breath away.
The text includes many fascinating facts about America's deserts. There is also a great map of the region. Captions including quotations from Van Dyke's "The Desert" fit the photography perfectly.

Eternal Wisdom from the Desert: Writings from the Desert Fathers (Christian Classic)

Book Description
In the fourth century, thousands of men and women fled into the Egyptian desert seeking to recapture the passion of the earliest Christians through lives of prayer and solitude. As records of the wisdom and purity of the "desert fathers and mothers" spread through the Roman Empire, Christians streamed to the caves of these desert hermits, seeking counsel on the interior life. The hermits' ascetic practices and sagacious words were a shining witness to a living faith that could be woven into the fabric of daily life--offering timeless wisdom for both monastic and lay Christians.
This volume contains Athanasius' famous The Life of St. Anthony, St. Jerome's The Life of Paul the Hermit, and the collected sayings of many of the desert fathers. Encouraging humility, patience, prayer, introspection, and love, the desert fathers and mothers teach today's believers that deep contemplative practice opens the door to eternal wisdom for daily life.

Discipline is difficult for every family, but when a parent is recovering from drug or alcohol abuse, setting and upholding behavioral limits can be particularly tough. In this familial situation, it's possible that trust has been broken, emotional boundaries trampled, and abuse perpetrated. Parents often do not have the skills necessary to set effective boundaries and follow through with appropriate disciplinary consequences. In Positive Discipline for Parenting in Recovery, authors Jane Nelsen, Riki Intner, and Lynn Lott, all professional counselors working with parents in recovery, give suggestions and advice to help recovering parents learn effective parenting--and disciplinary--skills. In chapters discussing communication, building routines, setting up support networks, and finding ways to break co-dependence patterns, the authors provide tools that will help the entire family recover from unhealthy patterns. --Ericka LutzBook Description
How can parents who have taken their first step toward recovery begin to heal the frayed relationship with their children? Parenting and recovery experts Jane Nelsen, Riki Intner, and Lynn Lott help parents take charge of their lives and make positive changes to bring health and healing to the whole family. Parents in recovery learn, one step at a time, how to create order and consistency in their relationship with their children.Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2002-06-01
Honestly, I didn't read past the first two or three chapters; the book seems to have been written for someone either still abusing alcohol or drugs - or someone who is just now in the beginning stages of recovery. . . and that's not where I am in my life.
I will definitely hold onto the book and hopefully can pass it on to someone who needs it.

This book details the Carrier, which was employed in a number of roles including carrying ammunition and towing anti-aircraft guns and trailers. All Allies used the Universal Carrier extensively during practically every World War II campaign. By the war’s end, the Universal Carrier had proved itself to be an invaluable and successful cross-country vehicle that was both agile and fast for its time.Customer Reviews:

Racial Attitudes in the 1990s: Continuity and Change
Manufacturer: Praeger Paperback ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0275960374 |
Book Description
More than half a century has passed since the publication of An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy, Gunnar Myrdal's agonizing portrait of the pervasiveness of racially prejudiced attitudes and discriminatory practices in American life. Central to Myrdal's work was the paradox posed by the coexistence of race-based social, economic, and political inequality on the one hand, and the cherished American cultural values of freedom and equality on the other. In the five decades since the publication of this work, there has been a dramatic decline in white Americans' overt expressions of anti-black and anti-integrationist sentiments and in many of the inequalities Myrdal highlighted in his monumental work. Yet the persistence of racial antipathy is evidence of the continuing dilemma of race in American society. This collection of original essays by leading race relations experts focuses on the recent history and current state of racial attitudes in the United States. It addresses key issues and debates in the literature, and it includes chapters on the racial attitudes of African-Americans as well as whites. The volume will be of great importance to students and scholars concerned with the sociology and politics of contemporary American race relations.

Gurwitsch's Relevancy for Cognitive Science (CONTRIBUTIONS TO PHENOMENOLOGY)
L. Embree Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402028911 |
Book Description
Findings about the central nervous system obtained with new technology, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), being too subtle to correlate with the crude results of many decades of behavioristic psychology, some psychologists were now turning to descriptions of subjective phenomena in William James, Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and even Buddhism, so why not also Aron Gurwitsch? After all, he regularly reflected on the basic concepts and methods of psychology, worked with Adhémar Gelb and Kurt Goldstein to research brain-injured veterans at Frankfurt in the 1920s, conspicuously employed Gestalt theory to revise central phenomenological doctrines, and taught Merleau-Ponty a thing or two. He died before cognitive science came together in the 1970s, but his positions on many issues - the self, the other, practical action in situations, the lived body, marginal consciousness, contexts of objects, reflection, naturalistic and cultural science, etc. - are shown by the essays in this volume to be quite relevant for that multidiscipline.
