A wonderful juxtapostion of travel and information.......2002-05-28

I highly recommend this book. Clearly, it will resonate
with anyone who has ever been to Tibet, but even more so,
with those who care about the Dharma and about the
treasures associated with it. The book is well written,

A DIFFERENT KIND OF RESCUE.......2002-04-21

Normally, art conservation is not high on my list of exciting subjects to read about. Pamela Logan has changed my mind. This personal and dramatic story about her commitment to the preservation of a small, remote monastery in the Tibetan region of Kham is unique. Interwoven with short paragraphs on the Buddhist interpretation of the major paintings that "protect" the temple, she tells us a story of how a small group of dedicated "experts", led by a woman who would not give up, and accompanied by an eclectic band of monks, government overseers, and trainees gave new life to the ancient murals of a monastery that were almost forgotten. Filled with the challenges of bringing technical expertise to a remote region where much needed materials are brought in on the backs of horses and supplies mysteriously disappear, the book inspires, entertains, and educates. There are very few books about the mysterious land of Kham. Logan once again takes us there and gives life to a people and a place that few of us will see, but all of us will remember. I give it five stars.

Excellent book about Eastern Tibet and its art treasures........2002-03-07

This book is about an enormous effort by someone who has devoted many years in helping Tibetans in the eastern part of Tibet called Kham. She is Pamela Logan, who could easily have enjoyed a comfortable life with her Ph.D degree in physics, but chose to spend many months per year in her cause, including disaster relief, schooling of rural children, bringing wheelchairs to remote villges, and restoration of Tibetan Art. This book is about the challenges in restoring art in a remote area where travel had to be done by horseback and supplies are very limited, not to mention the bureaucratic problems with the officials.

It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in that part of Tibet, and not just about the art, but about the daily life of Khampa Tibetans, and the land. The author also included some history of that area . There are very few books about this part of the world, which was opened up for foreigners travel only since 2000. I myself travelled there that year and the trip was an eye-opener.

The author's writing is easy to read, even when it comes to technical things about the preservation of murals. If there is anything I have to wish for better, it would probably be that some of the photos are not as clear as it can be, but that just demonstrated one of the challenges the author had to deal with. She did not even have freedom to document the restoration project. Many of her films were confiscated by the police for the silliest of reasons.

Beautiful photography, vibrant colors.......1999-08-07

This is a fabulous coffee table book makes a great gift for any nature lover. David Muench does a wonderful job of capturing the desert & bringing home for you to enjoy.It is in stunning full-color on glossy stock.

Photographs encompass landscapes of endless sands & rocks of many different hues. Impressive natural sandstone sculptures are also displayed. You even get a glimpse of the petroglyphs & ruins of ancient peoples.

I fell in love with a spectacular waterfall flowing into most gorgeous turquoise waters I have ever seen. Meadows of golden prickly pear cactus flowers & fields of brilliant orange poppies took my breath away.

The text includes many fascinating facts about America's deserts. There is also a great map of the region. Captions including quotations from Van Dyke's "The Desert" fit the photography perfectly.

An excellent introduction to the Desert Father's spirituality, lives, and way of life. Great for the beginner or the advanced in the study of God, love, solitude, contemplation, and faith. This should be on the shelf of every church library; Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant, and in the homes of every person who attains to a higher love and true communion with God.

Not bad, but not what I expected........2000-02-14

What I expected was the classic story of the little engine helping the toys reach their destination, most especially when trying to climb the mountain. Instead, I get a story about hide-and-seek. The impact of the "I think I can"-mantra just doesn't feel the same with a hide-and-seek plot. (No offense to the illustrator and writer.) In the book's defense, the back cover does say that it's about hide-and-seek, but a picture of the back cover was not available here at Amazon. Overall, if you know what you're getting...it's a nice, very short story, probably just right for a preschooler's comprehension when read by an adult.

These are regular old stickers, fine for a child who likes trucks, BUT, the book is small - 16 stickers, roughly 1 x 2" each. The manufacturer's price is $1.50, it costs more than double that amount to order these online. Disappointing.

Not what I expected.......2002-06-01

I had truly been looking forward to this book. After hearing so much about Jane Nelson and being in recovery, it sounded appropriate.

Honestly, I didn't read past the first two or three chapters; the book seems to have been written for someone either still abusing alcohol or drugs - or someone who is just now in the beginning stages of recovery. . . and that's not where I am in my life.

I will definitely hold onto the book and hopefully can pass it on to someone who needs it.

The Universal Carrier was a fast, lightly armed vehicle developed by the British Army to carry infantry across ground defended by small-arms fire, specifically the Bren light machine gun, hence the name ‘Bren Gun Carrier’. This name would stick with the Universal Carrier and all of its future variants. This book details the Carrier, which was employed in a number of roles including carrying ammunition and towing anti-aircraft guns and trailers. All Allies used the Universal Carrier extensively during practically every World War II campaign. By the war’s end, the Universal Carrier had proved itself to be an invaluable and successful cross-country vehicle that was both agile and fast for its time.

The Complete Story .......2005-09-02

The second sentence in this book pretty well sums up the entire story of the Bren Gun Carrier: 'Designed for a role that it never really fulfilled, it was adapted to dozens of others for which it was never entirely suited and was still in service, in vast numbers, long after it should have been pensioned off.'

In effect it was something like a tracked version of the Jeep. It was armored (sort of, about 1/3 of an inch), and because of the tracks had very good cross country mobility. It was reasonably reliable (in later versions) and cheap. It was made in several factories in the UK as well as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.

This book is another of Osprey's specialist books describing a single line of vehicles in great detail from its history to cut away drawings, dozens of variations, a magnificant set of photographs. It is probably the last word on Bren Gun Carriers (a name by which they are universally known, that was totally incorrect).

Findings about the central nervous system obtained with new technology, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), being too subtle to correlate with the crude results of many decades of behavioristic psychology, some psychologists were now turning to descriptions of subjective phenomena in William James, Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and even Buddhism, so why not also Aron Gurwitsch? After all, he regularly reflected on the basic concepts and methods of psychology, worked with Adhémar Gelb and Kurt Goldstein to research brain-injured veterans at Frankfurt in the 1920s, conspicuously employed Gestalt theory to revise central phenomenological doctrines, and taught Merleau-Ponty a thing or two. He died before cognitive science came together in the 1970s, but his positions on many issues - the self, the other, practical action in situations, the lived body, marginal consciousness, contexts of objects, reflection, naturalistic and cultural science, etc. - are shown by the essays in this volume to be quite relevant for that multidiscipline.
