Back to the future?.......2003-08-14
11 years after the publication of "Painted Ladies," Elizabeth Pomada returned to San Francisco to gaze anew upon its Victorians, and found a new concern for authenticity, subtlety, and sophistication in what she now calls the "Colorist Movement." The examples she shows here, while still splendidly detailed and richly pigmented, are for the most part less gaudy than those in the first book, reflecting the emergence of yuppies onto the preservationist stage earlier occupied by hippies and radicals. Almost the best part of the book, however, is the many interiors she has included, often by houseowners with a keen interest in authentic restoration. Architecture and interior-decorating buffs alike will want to own this volume.
Inspiring! Beautiful! A "must have" for renovators!.......1999-05-24
If ever you want to be inspired, transformed, bowled over or "wowwed" by the possibilities of an old house... Read the Pomada/Larsen series. The pictures are breathtakenly beautiful and the text is quite informative. Lots of 'pearls of wisdom' there. Before you buy that victorian, read this book for some informative information. After you buy--keep reading (like a litany) to keep the vision alive amidst the rubble and asbestos. You won't be sorry ---you will be renewed. These books were like falling in love, or the collector's itch---The fever is maddening but the end result is Oh so sweet. Get them all!! (5 titles still available)

Book Description
One woman of the 20th century who continues to fascinate and achieve an ever-growing popularity is Peggy Guggenheim. Here, at last, is the re-publication of her personal biography. Art patron extraordinaire, who effortlessly combined the personal and professional (indeed, they were almost indistinguishable), her life was marked by drama and adventure. Every aspect of that extraordinary life is reproduced in this lavishly illustrated volume, beginning with her privileged childhood as a member of the wealthy and powerful Guggenheim family and ending with her settling in her Venetian palazzo on the Grand Canal. Whether posing for Man Ray or Berenice Abbott; keeping company with James Joyce, Samuel Beckett or marrying Max Ernst; helping Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell or Mark Rothko to become major figures; Peggy Guggenheim had a lifetime of historic interludes with some of the most notable artists of the 20th century. Illustrated with both momentous and casual moments, here are the most private and revealing parts of Guggenheim's exceptional life.

The first sourcebook to All Flesh Must Be Eaten
<8020.html>
<8000.html>opens whole new vistas for a walking dead campaign. This tome brings together the thrills of Hong Kong action films and the excitement of flesh-craving horror. The match of these two genres may not have seem obvious at first, but the pleasures that arise from it are undeniable. After all, zombies and Hong Kong style action make a perfect fit. What better match is there for a relentless series of lightning kicks and a hurricane of bullets than a target that can't die? The pulse-pounding danger just never stops. Besides, what martial arts master worth his salt doesn't ache for the ability to use his own intestines as a deadly whip? For the undead, no problem!

During the heyday of the American Left's flirtation with Communism in the early decades of the 20th century, many radicals talked the talk but stopped short of walking the walk--rarely did one of them leave the West to live out the socialist dream in the Eastern Bloc. One of the few who did was Edith Anderson, a Jewish American married to an East German with whom she emigrated to Berlin shortly after the end of World War II. In Love in Exile, Anderson writes of her first decade in East Germany--a time marked by the dawn of the cold war and growing political repression.
Though Anderson and her husband, Max Schroeder, lived a life of relative ease--as members of the intelligentsia, they were entitled to better housing, access to cultural events, and the opportunity to travel abroad--eventually the government began cracking down on Germans who had spent the war years elsewhere. Schroeder barely escaped punishment, and the anxiety under which he had lived contributed to his alcoholism. Anderson herself had a nervous breakdown. Her marriage crumbling, she found relief in an extramarital affair. Max Schroeder died in 1958 and Edith Anderson ends her memoir in 1960. She continued to live in East Germany and raised her child there, despite her outrage at government persecution and party corruption. At the time, she hoped that these were problems the party could fix; it seems events since then have proved her wrong.

Online Dating Advice for the Lonely.......2004-04-25
I'm writing this to give some advice to others who may be in the situation I was in when I decided to try online dating, so that maybe I can save someone else a whole lot of disappointment. First, I am not what most women are looking for. I should have known this when most women showed little or no interest in me during my daily life. People are looking for the same things in online personals as they are looking for in "real life," so if you can't find a date in the regular world, you're probably not going to have much luck online. My point is that attraction is stupid. It doesn't matter how great your personality, intelligence, or character is, if you lack the certain physical and/or intangible qualities that make a person "attractive," you are doomed to go through life at a chronic disadvantage. People aren't even as nice to non-attractive people as attractive people. Attractive people have other people working themselves silly to impress them while other people really don't care if they have much to do with unattractive people. If you selected people for anything else based on how people select a date, you would be considered the biggest jerk it wouldn't even be funny. Attraction is no doubt something instinctually ingrained in people. So, doesn't that just make the dating world populated by a bunch of animals? Well, I say we are more than animals. We can use our brains and reject this unfair and senseless attitude of treating people differently based on whether we are attracted to them. I say, if the dating world is so stupid and unfair, who needs it? Let's all quit looking for dates. Do something to make yourself happy, instead of trying to impress someone you would like to date, who may not reward you for any of your efforts, just because they are not attracted to you. Or cheer up someone who's sad, do some charity work, do some good in this world. That makes a lot more sense than wasting time on stupid, unfair dating.
Love At First Click.......2003-06-21
Times have changed and so should online free personals. Some match making sites are re-inventing the free personal ads business using new technologies that are a breakthrough in the online dating singles market. I found this book to be current with this new trend. After reading it I developed the courage to place an ad at one of these single online dating sites found on the net, Love At First Click, otherwise known as loveatfirstclick.com. The book gave me the much needed skills to sort, search and find romance and excitement. The book and the effectiveness of loveatfirstclick.com will help you find a community featuring sincere and honest single individuals that are looking for other like-minded people that are quite eager in meeting their match in this fun world of online free personals. It helped me meet plenty of hot women. I'd recommmend this book, and Loveatfirstclick.com too!!

Passions In Poetry is listed in Chapter 7 (How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Modem The Ways. As a contributing member of that website, I would like to invite you all to our 'family' of poets. There is more than just romantic poetry..there is something for everyone! In honor of this book, I've written the following:
My heart soars without hearing your voice
I try holding back, but have no choice
You won my soul with a passion's flame
Because of you, I'll never be the same
I smile as you approve my verse
Deeper I sink into Cupid's curse
And though you think my words a game
I continue to write them just the same.
Gently chiding you beckon me
ICQ messages set words free
Fingers that dare to say the word
The only one you've not yet heard
Silence speaks a world of feeling
Cursor blinks as my head is reeling
Thoughts and words I'll not repent
This is love on the Internet.
Please join us at: netpoets
Look forward to seeing you there!
What a surprise!.......1999-11-24
Having found out that my web site was published in this book (page 200) ~ without any notification ~ I was intrigued to see what Mr. Schwartz had to say. When I was able to sit down and take a good look at the contents I discovered that the information inside was very useful for those exploring relationships on the Internet. However, I was disappointed at the fact that the author put forth no real effort in it's creation. How difficult would it be to take a copy of the web page and it's own authors words and publish it? And the fact that Mr. Schwartz feels he has the right to copyright the book and say that it's contents cannot be reproduced. Isn't that what he did? Overall -- the basic Idea of the book and it's contents are terrific, but this reviewer wishes the author would have put more of his own thoughts and work into it.

Book Description
Stanley Kubrick 's epic film Spartacus has enjoyed iconic status in cinema history and strongly influenced modern perspectives on ancient Rome. This book examines the film from different historical, political, and cinematic perspectives. The chief ancient sources on the slave revolt led by Spartacus are included in translation. Contributors explore the film 's representation of history, the political climate at the time of its making, the history of its production, censorship, and restoration, its place in film history, and its enduring appeal. For the first time, the book offers suggestions for a new version of the film that comes even closer to the filmmakers ' original intent than the restoration currently available.
Customer Reviews:
Great insite into Frederick the Great.......2005-10-15
This book does offer a lot of incite into the mind of one of history's best generals, Frederick the Great. Frederick gives some background into the Prussian army of his father but not much beyond that. His writings on some of the major battles of the Seven Years War are quite interesting, as are some of the details of the formation of the army and how battles and campaigns are to be fought.
However, Frederick sometimes gets dragged down in the details and is too repetitive for modern readers. Also, although it is almost needless to say, Frederick shows a fair amount of bias towards his own accomplishments and often doesn't give his opponents or even his father sufficient praise.
Overall, though, Jay Luvaas does an excellent job blending Frederick's disorganized writings into one flowing work. He also adds some of his own thoughts and clarifications that aide in the understanding of the book. This is a great buy for anyone interested in warfare from the 17th to 19th centuries as it shows the transition period. Although, if you don't know much about Frederick or his wars, it may be a bit too confusing in the details to start with.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview of several.......2006-10-14
Written in the late 19th century, this is a collection of campaign studies of Alexander the great, Hannibal, Ceasar, Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick the Great, and Napoleon. It includes several maps that are helpful but they lack the detail and clarrity that one would prefer. The maps, being part of a collection of lectures, were most likely maps in the author's notes which he would use on the chalk board to describe the battles. They appear to be rough sketches one might find in that context. Still, they are better than no maps at all and they do provide some context for the lecture content. The brevity of the book as a whole and the division of the book into standalone lectures make it a fair reference volume. But, you will certainly want more than these lectures for any one of "the great captains." It is an enjoyable set of lectures and worth the price you are likely to find this book now.

Book Description
John Frederick Charles Fuller (1878–1966), British soldier, military analyst, and war historian, is considered the father of modern armored (tank) warfare—first as planner of the attack at Cambrai in November 1917, and then as author of a number of works that challenged traditional British military thought. His ideas were resisted in his own country but had a major impact on German and Soviet military doctrine. Sir Basil Liddell Hart (1895–1970) was also a British military historian and analyst of note and authored influential military histories covering figures from Scipio Africanus to Field Marshal Rommel.
In the twelve analytical essays in Studies in British Military Thought Brian Holden Reid examines these two figures whose ideas have influenced the interpretation of events in military history from antiquity to the Cold War. He compares and contrasts their views on tactics, operational art and strategy, and war as a social phenomenon. Additionally, he discusses the radically different temperaments of the two and shows how their differences shaped their work in important ways. In so doing, he continues to bring their ideas to students and practitioners of modern warfare and raises fundamental issues concerning the nature of war.
