Picture Perfect is a Perfect lawn resource!.......2007-08-14
Picture Perfect is a must for anyone who is serious about their lawn. I found this book to be extremely informative and helpful in achieving the ideal lawn. It is very user friendly and makes obtaining the perfect yard obtainable for everyone.
Picasso of The Playing Field.......2007-07-02
Our lawn is looking great this year thanks to following the care and maintenance instructions in Picture Perfect. David Mellor's easy to follow guidelines on mowing make our lawn the prettiest in the neighborhood. Why do people scalp their lawns?
This book is not just about pretty pictures. David Mellor tells us about the facinating history of lawns. He shows us how to establish good grass from the ground up beginning with soil testing and fertilization and culminating with how to apply a distinctive design.
I am giving a copy of this book to my sixteen year-old nephew who started mowing lawns this summer. It will give him and edge over the competition.
After reading this book I see why David Halberstam called David Mellor "The Picasso of The Playing Field."
Perfect guide on a great subject.......2007-06-25
David Mellor shares his particular expertise with authority and in a straightforward way. I wanted to learn how to "design" my lawn like the pros and I got that and more from this book. It's a great supplement to your favorite basic lawn care guide (Mellor's other book, THE LAWN BIBLE, is a good one) and will have you mowing circles (or diamonds or stripes) around your neighbor's lawns.
Not Picture Perfect!.......2007-03-09
I wish I could recommend this book! I really do. You know when your 13-year old writes one of his/her first research papers and repeats him/herself in every other paragraph just to create "filler"? Well, that's exactly Mr. David R. Mellor's problem in his book, "Picture Perfect": he repeats himself over and over . . . and over again. Holy cow!
What IS a sign of a good "how to" book? Well, to me it is its thoroughness: you want to have all the info on the subject in one guide, right? (Or certainly, as close to it as possible.) Well, "Picture Perfect" is NOT perfect -- far from it.
There are many problems with the book. One, Mr. Mellor is a bad writer. His aforementioned repetition of many facts does not create an appreciation for diligence; it signifies a sense of belittlement and ineptitude. Furthermore, although his writing style is accessible for the most part, it is confusing at times during THE moments when it should be the most simple and easy to understand: in the chapter in which he describes how to actually make patterns, he is far too complicated in explaining a simple task . . . such as mowing parallel, adjacent lines in opposite directions! In the first few chapters, Mr. Mellor uses bullets and subchapters to enunciate clear and important points. Great! Yet when he finally gets to discussing the actual techniques of pattern making in Chapter 12, he lumps all points into one, making for a poor overview: the main points don't "stick" out. That's really too bad.
Two, the book is poorly organized. The first half -- yeap, half! -- is dedicated to A-Z lawncare. Come on! All he had to do was to state that there are many other books out there on lawncare, point them out, and get into the heart of THE subject. (That should have taken one paragraph.) And although very important, lawncare is NOT the subject of this treatise, right? (My favorite is Scotts.) Why try to outdo a book like Scotts in a few chapters . . . when the Scotts book covers lawncare brilliantly?! Makes no sense to me whatsoever! This IS, after all, a book on mowing patterns, NOT lawncare. All that Mr. Mellor had to do was to, perhaps, write an opening chapter of HIS advice, findings and nuances on lawncare, all of us having learned some from personal experience over the years. But no, Mr. Mellor tries to reinvent the wheel. In addition, to use black & white photographs in a book published in the 21st century is embarrassing! (No, not all photographs are black & white. But . . . ) Let me get this straight: this book deals with the visual sense, right? So wouldn't you want to use color photographs?! Get real! Furthermore, the illustrations in the chapter on making patterns are not used effectively: all mowing passes could have actually been shown in ONE illustration instead of several, thus making the instructions more accessible. Also, Mr. Mellor tells you that with practice, you will get better. OK, let me get this straight? I am supposed to pay $38.70 to be told that with practice I will get better at doing something? We already know that! That's the whole point of a "how to" book: it is supposed to teach you a subject so that you will decrease the amount of time for you to get good at something, right? Good Lord! (Nope, we're not done yet.) At the very end of the book, Mr. Mellor writes about some of his personal experiences when he worked at Milwaukee's County Stadium, one of which involved the chasing off of seagulls from the field. Again, let me get this straight: you are supposed to pay $38.70 to learn how another human being . . . chased away seagulls?! Mr. Mellor, you are very audacious! I thought this book is about making patterns on lawns? And finally, here is the greatest downfall of the book. The book is 160 pages long, yet ONLY 32 pages actually deal with creating lawn patterns. And actually, I am being too generous: only Chapter 14 deals specifically with pattern instruction which is . . . 18 pages long! So let me get this straight? You are expected to pay $38.70 for a book which only gives you 18 pages on that subject? Are you kidding me?!
Now, having made this last point, let's look at it from a different angle. What does the fact tell you that only 18 pages out of a 160-page book actually deal with the subject at hand? Well, it tells me that the subject matter is NOT all that complicated! Look, if you have, or even HAVE NOT, any gardening experience, but are practical and use common sense, you can create lawn patterns. Sure you can! It ain't that complicated as Mr. Mellor would lead you to believe. I was successful on my first try . . . and so will you.
Holy cow! Mr. Mellor, you need to seriously consider writing a second edition of this book in which you leave out the opening half on lawncare (and leave that to others), use color photographs only, and devote MUCH more effort and time to the actual subject: lawn patterns.
So, if you have ANY gardening savvy and do NOT need your hand held, then I highly recommend that you do NOT buy this expensive book. If you DO need to have your hand held, then buy this book . . . I guess.
Picture perfect: Mowing Techniques for Lawns, Landscapes, and Sports.......2007-01-16
The book is very small. I expected a larger book with lots of pictures. There are a few pictures, but the book itself was disappointing.

poor quality pencils-decent instruction.......2007-06-02
The hard "dry" pencils provided with this book are enough to discourage the person new to color pencil from ever getting started. But I am accustomed to using Prismacolor and Koh-i-noor pencils...both are very richly pigmented.
I like the instruction in that it shows how to create a full color painting using a very limited palette.
Sadly they took the gimmick approach...if they had maybe fattened up the actual learning content and forgot about providing "all you need" it would have been a better product.

A decent intermediate portraiture book.......2002-11-10
I just finished reading this book and anyone without a general understanding of how the basic photographic process works would be a little stumped, because this book does get pretty technical.
On the plus side, it is extremely easy to read and browse thru esp coz some of the work is really very good. My one little qualm with the book was there are a couple of pictures that i wudve lovd to kno the lighting setup for, but tht wasnt demonstrated.. for most of the shots tho, a small briefing abt camera, esposure settings, lighting setup, special techniques and little hints and tips are provided which are very helpful to get to know the essence of shooting the frame. Sum of the work is truly outstanding, tho sumtimes i get the feeling that the lighting setups werent explained very accurately which led me to believe that mebbe the author conjured up the setups on his own without inputs from the original photographers.
overall there are good tips and techniques most of which ud probably know already if u've bin shooting on your own.. and it does tend to get a little repetitive abt certain ideas.. overall tho it is a book i'd recommned anyone interested in portaiture ought to have for the sheer simplicity of presentation and useful ideas you'd glean as you read the book. Since this is a classic portraiture book, dont expect to find radical new age images in it.. a lot of the shots are tastefully done B&W's.. with a good sprinkling of those cross processed fashion ed shots...classic stuff that you'd always use throughout your life shooting people.. this book addresses shooting people from all walks of life of all ages of both sexes for commercial and personal use. Most of the work is studio work with a few daylight and strobes + daylight pics for variety.. so u'd have to have atleast one studio strobe with reflectors to b able to try atleast sum of the shots..
Sum shots have complex light setups.. the lighting diagrams are not as good as the PRO LIGHTING series diagrams from ROTOVISION also.. but then thats a specilised book.. this book offers useful technique that isnt offered in the PRO LIGHTING series.
To conclude i'd just say this is a book that shud be on ur shelf just coz u'll always find sumthing useful from this book for a long time if u shoot people :)

Book Description
Eugene Field (1850–95) is perhaps best remembered for his children's verse, especially "Little Boy Blue" and "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod." During his journalistic career, however, his column, "Sharps and Flats," in the Chicago Daily News illuminated the shenanigans of local and national politics, captured the excitement of baseball, and praised the cultural scene of Chicago and the West over that of the East Coast and Europe. Field used whimsy, satire, and, at times, unadorned admiration to depict and encapsulate the energy of a young nation reinventing itself and its political ambitions in the closing decades of the nineteenth century.
Foremost, Field was a political observer. During his lifetime politics saw more public awareness and involvement than at any other time in American history, and Field's great popularity derived mainly from his near-ceaseless commentary—arch, outlandish, comic, serious—on that arena of affairs. Field also devoted many columns to entertainment and diversions, discussing the baseball "idiocy" that stormed Chicago and championing and criticizing authors and actors.

Book Description
This book is an indispensable guide for parents of preadolescents and adolescents. Here you will find valuable information about teenagers and the common customs and practices at the teenage scene. Between the covers of this book are practical methods for parents to use to help their children deal with the pressures of their peers.
For many years, parents have been aware that the teenage scene poses some risks. Some parents decide to wait and see if a problem develops and then address it. Other parents fall prey to the many myths that help sustain not only ineffective parenting but also the teenage scene itself:
"All kids experiment. Everyone is doing it."
"There is too much peer pressure to resist."
"We did it. They will. Everything will work itself out."
Thirty years of research has proved not only that these myths offer false hopes for parents but also preparing in advance is a key element for success. With the valuable and carefully researched information this book provides, groups of parents will find this book to be a wonderful networking tool. Together, parents can discuss these successful strategies and implement the game plan presented here.
Customer Reviews:
Bold and on the money.......2002-05-02
Bold because Ms. Strening points to parents as the most influential people in their children's lives and suggests how we model behavior without realizing it. Her research is excellent, her own extensive experience makes her an "expert", her writing is straight forward. The suggestions she makes to help adults bring their children through difficult years in difficult times are simple, doable, and if taken on as a community project, very powerful. As a friend said to me today, we should tell parents to read this book when their children are 2. Mine is almost 17 and it is not too late.
TEEN SCENE MADE CLEAR.......2001-12-21
A Game Plan for Parents is a book that should be in every household with children. Not only is easily read but right "on the mark" about today's teens, their thoughts and their problems. As a grandparent of teens, it helped me understand the teen "scene".
Book Description
In his wide-ranging investigation, Max Wallace goes further than any other historian to expose how Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh posed a serious threat to democracy in the U.S. and abroad. Wallace reveals how these so-called heroes abused their power to launch crusades that played a crucial role in bringing about Hitler's rise to power and undermined the Allied war effort. Based on thousands of previously undis-covered documents, including shocking FBI and military intelligence files, The American Axis presents not only a mesmerizing narrative, but a compelling historical expos.

The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-18
I have not only read "the International Jew" published by Henry Ford. I have also read Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler. I have even written my own analysis of Mein Kampf which I have been serializing on my blog the hobo philosopher. I have been doing my own personal research of "Who Financed Adolf" for at least a decade now.
It is difficult to vouch for anyone's research on any subject no matter how renown the reputation of the historian or the author - people are still criticising Gibbon. But though this book is the most blatant indictment of these two men as Nazi supporters that I have yet found, there is nothing in this book that is inconsistent with numerous indictments and accusations by other historians and authors.
Though any book can be criticised for its accuracy one can only judge by its consistency with the historical record and one's own personal abilities as a critical reader and researcher.
On both counts I find this book substantiated. There is nothing in this book that is beyond reasonable acceptance. For what it is worth this book has approx. 60 pages of notes and sources.
Henry Ford, especially, is becoming less and less a "great" man and American the more and more I read. It is sad.
Non-Sequiturs of Extensive Research.......2007-03-21
Max Wallace must be given credit for being such an ambitious researcher. Unfortunately, his exhaustive research is ruined by his animus contortions of logic and his willingness to make assumptions which far exceed the evidence he so eagerly sought and failed to find. The book's cover says it all--With a picture of Auschwitz next to Charles A. Lindberg and Henry Ford, _The American Axis_ is an attempt at making a 'but for' case that without Lindberg and Ford, the Nazi Holocaust never would have occurred.
The heart of Wallace's case against Ford is his writings in the "Dearborn Independent" (1920), later compiled as _The International Jew_. Wallace must assume that most of his readers will not have ever read _The International Jew_ as he incessantly uses every expression imaginable to convince them that is was inspired by hatred. But those who read it for themselves will see in Ford's own words that, "Prejudice and hatred are the very conditions which a scientific study of the Jewish Question will forestall and prevent." Nevertheless, misunderstandings did ensue and rumors did abound. Wallace dedicated many pages to every rumor of Ford financing the 3rd Reich as if to make the reader believe proof was immanent. Yet buried within pages and pages of innuendo were small admissions that each and every rumor was not substantiated. What is most significant to Wallace is his claim (p.295) that anti-Semitism was highest where Ford's Dearborn Independent was most popular, although I have no idea how Wallace made such a measurement.
The most damning evidence Wallace presents as a condemnation of Ford is the fact that Robert Schmidt, a former employee of Ford, managed the German Ford plant during America's involvement in WWII and obtained 50 workers through Albert Speer. These workers were actually on the payroll, but one person--Elsa Inanowa--later claimed she was never paid. In 1998, she filed a class action lawsuit against the Ford Motor Company for compensation, but the case was dismissed. (These are the facts given in the book, minus the spin and all the subsequent talk about the Nazi's use slave labor in general.) Robert Schmidt was also involved with the IG Farben Company which had a rubber factory in Auschwitz and also produced Zyklon B--used in the gas chambers. Robert Schmidt himself, was not even under the direct control of Ford and was never convicted of any war crimes. Nevertheless, Henry Ford, Wallace would have us believe, somehow bears responsibility for the Nazi death camps.
The research does indicate that Lindberg supported a form of eugenics when applied to cases of mental retardation and criminals. Yet again, Wallace makes unsubstantiated inferences that he would have approved eugenics for the purpose of committing genocide against the Jews. This is what I would call "intellectually dishonest," although Wallace applies this phrase to all of Lindberg's other biographers. (p. 277) And how does Wallace justify such outrageous assumptions and accusations about Lindberg? He does so by the argument that we and his biographers should have "judged him by his followers." (p.280) Such reasoning would indict the Beetles for the acts of Charles Manson years after they recorded Helter Skelter. And of course the circular argument is presented (p. 294) that any of Lindberg's defenders must themselves be anti-Semitic. Ever the clever propagandist, Wallace confesses that nowhere did he find any evidence that Lindberg was a Nazi (p.281), yet he knows that a picture is worth a thousand words as he suggests that a picture in the book shows Lindberg giving a Nazi salute. Most people alive today are unaware that in those years this is the way we saluted our own American flag. (see [...] and [...]) The reason we later changed our flag salute should be obvious.
The politics of America's involvement in WWII is so oversimplified by Wallace that without any independent research or knowledge, the reader would believe that anyone in the "America First" movement was pro-Nazi. Anyone who opposed or criticized the Treaty of Versailles, Franklin D. Roosevelt, The New Deal, Communism, or even labor unions, Wallace skillfully paints as anti-Semitic. There was no room, in Wallace's analysis, for consideration of the so-called "Yellow Peril" of Russia and China since these were considerations of anti-Semitic Nazis and Fascists. And despite the fact that above all else Ford was a business man, Wallace gives no consideration to any distinctions between military Isolationists/Interventionists and economic Isolationists/Interventionists. Yet one of the greatest Austrian economists, Ludwig von Mises (himself a Jew), in his _Interventionism, An Economic Analysis_ (1940), had this to say: "The 'progressives' who today masquerade as 'liberals' may rant against 'fascism'; yet it is their policy that paves the way for Hitlerism." There were very many other viewpoints and complex issues ignored in _The American Axis_. But Wallace does anticipate his critics to some degree by including brief admissions here and there such as on p. 260 where he admits that sometimes charges of being un-American, anti-Semitic, or pro-Nazi were used unfairly. However, his overwhelming message is made very clear--you were either on the side of the Allies or the side of the Axis.
_The American Axis_ is filled with lines such as, "It is almost impossible to know." (p. 338) Yet conclusions always follow without hesitation. Even within the space of a single page (p.319) Wallace follows his words "no conclusive evidence" with an admonition to believe one of his conclusions anyway, while soon thereafter stating that because there is "not a single piece of convincing evidence " we should not believe another. Apparently he is the final arbiter of the difference between convincing and conclusive evidence. Max Wallace definitely has a political agenda and will not hesitate to take his shots wherever he feels the urge and sees an opportunity. For example, out of the blue (p. 349), in between bringing Edsel Ford and GM's Opel subsidy into the picture for brief mentions of their shares of the blame, we get a page-and-a-half of discussion on Prescott Bush, based on the _The Secret War Against The Jews_ by John Loftus. And nothing brings Wallace's personal animosities to the fore any more clearly than his vengeful descriptions of the deaths of all the major villains portrayed in his book.

Not so fast.......2007-02-27
An interesting read ... I can't be so judgmental of mr lindburg as many people especially considering the state of the world and the state of our culture under our democracys. I have less sympathy for ford.
America has certainly killed millions of people in the world to further its goals too and with the world population approaching 9 billion by the year 2050 largely due to our modern value systems we can probably expect dicey times ahead...man made and otherwise.
My only point is to suggest that we should not be so cocksure that we know it all... and not be so quick to judge. Many scientists, artists and thinkers in the 1930's lended at least some support to the german regime and if you read what they had to say about it they are frighteningly articulate ... we may not agree with everything they have to say but with the way the world is going today, I don't think we are in the best of positions to totally dismiss some of their points even if with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight we can certainly dismiss many of the excesses of the german regime.
Superbly written, throughly documented, history.......2006-06-10
I cannot BELIEVE the negative reviews that this book has received on this site - and you shouldn't either! This is one of the most carefully researched, extensively footnoted, beautifully written, books on this subject ever published. The sources include entries from Lindbergh's journal, Lindbergh's speeches, FBI files, letters from German archives, Ford company records, and many other primary sources. Every assertion of fact is backed up with unimpeachable documentation. This is not in any way a hatchet job. Wallace goes out of his way to tell us what we do not know for sure, and to give his subjects the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.
But, even so, what emerges is a damning portrait of Ford and Lindbergh. The degree of responsibility for the success of the Third Reich that must be borne by these two men will astonish you. The author, using polls from the time, deftly demolishes the utterly bogus argument that these two men were simply reflecting the prevailing attitudes of the majority of Americans, as anyone who had actually read the book would know.
When Wallace, near the end of the book, expands his scope to address the reasons such admittedly poorly educated (and in Lindbergh's case, incredibly naïve and, in my opinion, rather stupid) individuals were able to have such influence over the events of the 1930's and 1940's, he is addressing the deeper issues that lie behind the events he has described - such as humanity's apparent need for heroes, and those heroes' concomitant responsibility to think, speak, and act humanely and honorably. Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford brought great harm to humanity, most especially to the Jews, during their years on the world stage. They should be held responsible for it.
Smearing one of the greatest American Heros.......2005-12-27
This is a typical smear job done on an American hero simply because he was an outspoken opponent of the US getting into our so sacred involvement in World War II. Most of America had no interest in getting involved in another European war, however, FDR and the international banks had other ideas. Lindbergh seems naive because he was naive, as were most Americans at the time. They could not conceive that their government was controlled by treasonous liars dedicated to propping up the most horrible regime in history so far (Communist Russia). Lindbergh spoke the truth, but in an age of universal deceit, the truth was easily defeated, the US and the allies were pulled into another murderous war with the result being that Communist Russia was able to take most of Europe, murder between 40 and 50 million innocents and plunge the world into an apocalyptic cold war. Lindbergh was well educated, well traveled, brave and smart enough to see what was best for the United States. As Pat Buchanan has pointed out, World War II makes no sense when you look at it from the American citizen's standpoint and that is the view that Lindbergh took. This book does what our government schools have done; its rewritten history, told only half the story, glorified the weak and traitorous and smeared those who dared to tell the truth and expose the powers that pulled the strings behind the scenes to maneuver America into a war the people did not support. Does that sound at all similar to what is happening today? If anything, this book is a text book example of the incessant character assassination that occurs to those who dare to oppose the powers that be and their constant financial collusions and war-making. If you're interested in learning more about this true American hero and his thoughts, read "The Wartime Journals of Charles A. Lindbergh." Its of course out of print, but you can buy used copies on the internet. This is what you have to resort to these days to find anything remotely truthful about history.

This book deals with fundamental questions relating to outstanding changes in Jewish Intellectual history from the time of the Bible to the present. These questions include the following: How did Israel evolve from being a people which oscillated to and from belief in one God to exclusive monotheism? Which circumstances led to the transition among the Jews in the Roman empire from being a militant, state-based people to being a pacifist, scripture-based people? Which social forces attracted the Jews under medieval Islamic rule to secular life and identity? How did emancipation after the American and French revolutions lead to the end of rabbinic dominance? How did nationalism transform modern Jewish life and culture?

Book Description
Damage mechanics is concerned with mechanics-based analyses of microstructural events in solids responsible for changes in their response to external loading. The microstructural events can occur as cracks, voids, slipped regions, etc., with a spatial distribution within the volume of a solid. If a solid contains oriented elements in its microsctructure, e.g. fibers, the heterogeneity and asisotropy aspects create situations which form a class of problems worthy of special treatment. This book deals with such treatments with particular emphasis on application to technological composite materials.
Chapter one describes the basic principles underlying both the micromechanics approach and the continuum damage mechanics approach. It also reviews the relevant statistical concepts. The next three chapters are devoted to developments of the continuum damage mechanics approach related to characterization of damage with internal variables, evolution of damage and its coupling with other inelastic effects such as plasticity. Chapter 5 describes observations of damage from notches in composite laminates and puts forward some pragmatic modelling ideas for a complex damage configuration. The next two chapters form the bulk of the micromechanics approach in this volume. The first one deals with microcracking and the other with interfacial damage in composite materials.

Book Description
Paperback. The aim of the 6th International Fatigue Congress, besides covering the entire field of fatigue, was to promote the intimate connection between basic science and engineering application by the selection of appropriate session topics.
Fatigue is the main cause of failure of engineering structures and components. Making reliable fatigue predictions is highly difficult because knowledge about fatigue mechanisms in all stages of the fatigue process must be developed much further. In addition, the decreasing availability of raw materials and energy resources forces engineers to continually reduce the weight of constructions. This congress presents research results also particularly for new materials, including composites. Researchers, on the other hand, are confronted with the engineering demands. Futhermore, the overwhelming development which is presently taking place in the field of computer software and hardware dealing with fatigue problems is

Book Description
Fibre composites, like metals, exhibit a form of degradation in service described as fatigue. Engineers must understand composite fatigue because it is a causative agent of design and structural failures. Engineers need to increase their knowledge of the mechanisms that result in degradation in order to predict the life of a composite under specified conditions and produce composites with greater durability. Fatigue in Composites provides an extensive account of contemporary research on fatigue from a selection of internationally recognized researchers. Part I introduces the concept, delivering a historical review of the fatigue behavior of fibre-reinforced plastics and illustrating fatigue test methods and fatigue under multiaxial stress systems. Part II reviews current research on micromechanical aspects, emphasizing long-term behavior, interface performance, delamination, and damage accumulation. Part III covers the analysis and testing of fatigue behavior. Part IV details physical, micromechanical, computational, statistical, and life-prediction models for constant and variable stress. The final sections offer an overview of the wide range of composite fatigue-related problems experienced by engineers in aerospace, marine, and structural engineering. About the Author Bryan Harris is Professor Emeritus at Bath University, where he served as Professor of Materials Science. Dr. Harris worked for ICI Metals Division and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, and was Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Composites Science and Technology. He also serves as Materials Consultant for Buro Happold Civil Engineers Ltd.
