    Book Description

Rajasthan is a growing destination for both Indian and Western visitors, who are attracted by the region's history, tradition, luxurious hotels, and cuisine. This lush new book, written by a leading architecture and social historian, traces the evolution of palace architecture in Rajasthan from the 16th to the early 20th century. George Michell focuses on the major capitals of Rajput power, including Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner, as well as the lesser centers of Alwar, Bundi, Kota, and Jaisalmer, providing a glimpse into the lives of the often-colorful maharajas who lived in these and other fantastic palaces.

From the early fortresses of Chitor and Amber to the spacious city complexes in Jaipur and Udaipur and the Art Deco-style Umaid Bhavan in Jodhpur, Princely Rajasthan is at once a remarkable architectural history and a sumptuous visual evocation of Rajput courtly life. Antonio Martinelli's dazzling photographs bring to life the magnificent settings of the palaces, their outstanding architectural features and murals, and the royal collections of paintings, furniture, palanquins, and armor. AUTHOR BIO: George Michell trained as an architect and has a Ph.D. in Indian archaeology. He has published numerous books on Islamic and Indian architecture. Antonio Martinelli is an internationally renowned photographer who has worked extensively in India, Europe, and Japan.

      Book Description

Interviews with Richard Avedon, Suzy Parker, Eileen Ford, Lillian Bassman, Mary Jane Russell, and Lauren Bacall "Dahl-Wolfe freed color from convention and timidity. . . . Today, her pictures continue to seem just a little ahead of their time."

-Vicki Goldberg, American Photographer Louise Dahl-Wolfe (1895-1989) was one of the great fashion photographers of her era-a woman who contributed 86 cover images and thousands of interior shots to Harper's Bazaar between 1936 and 1959. Her elegant, beautifully composed photographs-many shot on location, in natural light, and in color-helped define a new American style that was wholesome yet worldly. This lavish book is the first-ever retrospective on this influential photographer. In addition to fashion images, the 140 photographs collected here include a sampling of Dahl-Wolfe's portrait work-unforgettable images of Josephine Baker, Edward Hopper, Eudora Welty, and Jean Cocteau, among other luminaries. Louise Dahl-Wolfe is a rare treat for everyone who loves fashion and photography. 140 illustrations, 100 in full color, 9 x 12" DOROTHY TWINING GLOBUS is director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. VICKY GOLDBERG is an internationally known photography critic and historian, and a contributor to The New York Times. NAN RICHARDSON, former editor of Aperture, is curator of the Louise Dahl-Wolfe exhibition that this book accompanies. 3 out of 5 stars Good presentation of Dahl-Wolfe's Photography.......2003-07-28

Louise Dahl-Wolfe shot some captivating images, as evidenced by the cover, and apparently was one of the best fashion photographers of the middle 20th C. The book contains 2 essays which kind of overlap in content and some plates of her B&W and color work, as well as outtakes, and some reportage work. The printing quality was okay, with the exception that a lot of the color photographs were scanned from either the printing plates (or more likely) magazines because they had visible dot pattern. I don't know if the original color images had faded beyond repair, were lost, or, the authors may have made made an aesthetic/representation choice here. One essay described how Dahl-Wolfe was very exacting with the printing presses and perhaps the printed images best represented her vision, however, for me the dot artifacts detracted from the pictures, which were quite excellent. It is easy to see why Dahl-Wolfe is regarded as an early master of color fashion photography. Worth picking up on overstock if interested in fashion or fashion photography.

        4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2000-04-27

One of the more complicated marvel stories around. In a nutshell: A grown up Franklin (Sue & Reed's kid) comes back in time from the future to the "present." He doesn't recognize the present as the present and rearranges things (and reality) to something closer to what he remembers. This brings in past AND future versians of the FF, the X-men, and various other X-groups. As if this isn't complicated enough already, Franklin is... well... sick. Baby Franklin is unconscoius and the adult has something seroiusly wrong with him. And all of this is before Rachel's (Scott & Jean's possible future child from an alternate reality) past shows up... Have fun!

Through journals like "The Saturday Evening Post," "The New York Herald Tribune," and "Newsweek," journalists Joseph (1910-1989) and Stewart (1914-1974) Alsop espoused militant anticommunism and a robust vision of America as the world's legitimate leader. They enjoyed greater influence than most journalists, having unequaled access to presidents from Truman to Carter, and especially Kennedy, whom they advised on sweeping matters of state. Together, this journalistic tag team redefined the role of the media in American politics. Those who complain that the so-called liberal news media enjoy too much power today ought to take note that the way was paved by these archconservatives. This is a fine and highly readable addition to recent American history.

4 out of 5 stars More than just a dual biography.......2003-01-17

Those who remember being rankled or reassured by the political columns of the Alsop brothers during the 1950's will appreciate this thorough study of two of the most prominent journalists of their time, Joseph and Stewart Alsop.

This well written, well researched book is more than just a dual biography. It is a fascinating walk-though of the times which the Alsops reported with intelligent insights drawn from their unparalleled contacts.

Sons of a privileged Northeastern WASP family, the Alsops had the best of everything: education at Groton and then at Harvard; they had money; their cousin, Franklin Roosevelt, reigned supreme in the White House; their a great-uncle, Teddy Roosevelt, had become an historical monument. With these resources behind them, they applied their great talents as writers and their high intellects to make the most of it.

As partners in the syndicated newspaper columns, their contacts and influences put what they reported at the top of the list of "must reads". When they separated to go their separate ways, the flamboyant Joe remained a highly influential daily columnist while the more reflective Stewart won even greater praise for his Saturday Evening Post features in the days when the Post was the preeminent weekly family magazine.

The lives of the Alsop brothers paralleled the history of the United States during the mid-part of the 20th Century -- from the Depression to Reagan's election and finally the fall of the Soviet Union. It was because they participated in and reported history in the making that their biographies resonate with so much interest. We see Stewart parachuting behind enemy lines during World War II while Joe -- with General Chenault -- was chased by enemy troops over the rough terrain of China. We read of their many dinners and parties with their cousins the Roosevelts at the White House; their mutual abhorrence of Senator McCarthy; the benign acceptance but not idolatry of President Eisenhower; their love of Jack and Jackie Kennedy; their awful sorrow at President Kennedy's assassination; their encouragement and then their discouragement of the Vietnam war; the Watergate fiasco -- American history of that time in the raw -- from their perspective.

Through it all, Mr. Merry is able to paint good, memorable pictures of the flamboyant, often outrageous Joe and the down-to-earth Stewart and how they became important to the Washington of their times. This is a fine book, worth reading and owning.

                    From the Publisher

Just ten days out of land-based flight training and on the eve of the Persian Gulf War, Lieutenant Junior Grade Sherman Baldwin was assigned to Air Wing Five's EA-6B Prowler squadron--call sign Ironclaw--aboard the U.S.S. Midway. Flying the Prowler attack aircraft, Baldwin, his crew of three flight officers, and the rest of their squadron were responsible for identifying, jamming and destroying enemy radar.

In Ironclaw, Baldwin gives a compelling, tension-filled account of modern carrier warfare. From the tactical mission planning room belowdecks to the cockpit of his Prowler launching from zero to 150 knots in two seconds, the reader is there. Midair refuelings, day and night landings on the pitching deck of the Midway (at the time, our country's smallest carrier), and Desert Storm combat missions are all here just as he lived them.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of info about being a Navy pilot but dull in spots.......2004-05-02

Oddly, the book starts to flounder when the Gulf War begins - the "war stories" he tells are actually quite uneventful. The best parts of the book are when he describes the people he works with on the ship. He does a good job of bringing these people to life, and telling about his difficulties dealing with the higher-ups onboard and their intimidating leadership styles. That was very honest of him, but he didn't reveal much about why he decided to leave the Navy and go into business just a few years later. Overall, it's a good book. I recommend Bogeys and Bandits as the best Navy pilot book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but not Top Gun.......2002-09-30

This book was not the literary version of Top Gun so if you are looking for seat of the pants air combat this is not really the book to read. The author was a navy EA-6 Prowler pilot during the Gulf War. He flew from the U.S.S. Midway. One of the more interesting parts of his story is that he was a new carrier pilot at the start of the conflict, therefore, he had to get accustomed to flying from a carrier during war conditions. The tensest passages in the book deal with his night landings and aerial refuelings. The actual job his aircraft performed in the war, although very valuable, was a bit dull. This was not air to air fighter pilot dogfights.

I was also a little disappointed with his descriptions of what life was like on a carrier during wartime. There were some descriptions, but not enough for me to get a good picture of his time out on the ship. Do not get me wrong, the book was enjoyable and the writing was good. The book did tell the story of the war that most of us would not get to hear given the author was not a fighter pilot glamour jockey. I just wanted a bit more overall details of his group's missions and life on the carrier and skip the love story.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific look at America's best.......2001-11-23

This is an extraordinarily well written first person account of life as a Naval Aviator. Have you ever wondered what kind of men we send into harm's way, what they're like and where they come from? Are they different from the rest of us? What's it like to fly and fight a Naval aircraft in a real shooting war? Sherman Baldwin has your answers. Rather than the bravado common to other first-person combat stories, Baldwin's account is told with a great deal of humanity. Certainly there are the accounts of combat and carrier operations that will have you on the edge of your seat. But this is really the story of a man (not a machine) in an extraordinary situation doing extraordinary things on behalf of his country. I know men like this. They are my heroes, and Sherman Baldwin captures their lives and experiences as well as his. If you want to feel proud about America, read this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2001-04-14

The main thing I got out of this book is a compelling need to ALWAYS send letters to our servicemen and servicewomen in overseas wars. I had no idea how much it meant to them. It was pretty interesting, and I don't understand why Baldwin's friends would criticize him for using his Harvard education on the Navy. What I don't get is how he can waste his Harvard education on what he's doing now (read the epilogue).

                    3 out of 5 stars Mostly Interesting........2000-05-02

When not distracted, Baldwin delivers an honestly written and interesting account of his experience as a naval aviator during the gulf war. His stories of the missions flown are both interesting and thrilling. The problem, in my eyes, is that it seems like he spends half the book telling us all how amazingly wonderful his then girlfriend, now wife, is. Certainly the connection to home and family are an integral part of any miltary story, but he takes it way too far. He crows on and on about how this girl is the most beautiful, wonderful, greatest thing on the planet. I have no doubt she is, but I was trying to read a book about Naval Aviation.

                    Book Description

Sergei Feodorovich Platonov's Time of Troubles is a classic study of the years 1598-1613, a turbulent and decisive period in Russian history. Available for the first time in English, this work will be a valuable tool for students of the medieval as well as modern periods.

Platonov, himself a tragic victim of the regimentation imposed on Soviet cultural life in the 1920s, was born in 1860 and attained immense public and professional recognition in Russia as a leading historian. In his work he synthesized,, to a high degree, two major traditions of Russian historiography: the St. Petersburg "school," which emphasized the collection and rigorous use of primary sources, and the Moscow "school" with its socioeconomic and geopolitical approaches. Time of Troubles represents the finished product of a lifetime spent in research, writing, and teaching. In broad terms it treats nearly a century and a half of Russian history (1500-1648); in detail it scrutinizes developments in the Muscovite State from 1598 to 1613. Some of the major issues covered in this volume are: the growing consolidation of Muscovite absolutism and the formation of a national state; the expansion of Muscovy to the west and southeast; the demise of the boyar class and the rise of the service-gentry; the emergence of serfdom as the social basis of Muscovite society; the cataclysmic end of one dynasty, the House of Rurik, and the beginnings of another, the House of Romanov. For Platanov--who devoted most of his career as a scholar to the study of these dramatic years--the epoch marked nothing less than the great divide between medieval Muscovy and modern Russia, witnessing the downfall of an essentially patrimonial regime and its replacement, after fierce struggles, by a more modern state founded on a new constellation of social groups.

4 out of 5 stars An essential work for history lovers.......2002-05-25

This book is written by Russia's late expert in the country's history, which is one of the reasons why this book is important to every medieval history student.
It's quite easy to read- cause the author divides the book into many small chapters, which cover only one subject at a time. This is a huge asset, since many history book tend to rush from one subject to another- leaving the reader confused and irritated. So for those who don't like the thought of a dry treatise- don't worry it's very accesible!!!!
The author's knowledge is evident, it's written with security and straight-forwardness without unneccesary complications. There's no specific point of view, from which the book is written, so it gives a good, thorough review of this remarkable era in Russian history. Good for non-experts in medieval history- but also nice for historylovers!!

                      Book Description

`It is a riveting tale; and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The strong personalities and the passionate sense both of self-righteousness and of injustice burn brightly throughout.' (Professor John Morrill, University of Cambridge)

In April 1644, with the English Civil War at its height, a man walked into the coastal town of Walberswick in Suffolk, got into a fight with some locals, and was killed. The local Justice of the Peace, Robert Brooke, exacted swift retribution, and the three perpetrators were hanged. Thereafter, the event became known as `The Battle of Bloody Marsh'.

Why did this `battle' happen, and what does it tell us about what life was really like in an English rural community in the seventeenth century: Peter Warner draws upon an extraordinarily rich set of primary sources to reconstruct the causes and consequences of this violent episode. He unravels a tale of crisis in a social landscape - a story of rising poverty, enclosure, accusations of rape, and the brutal confrontation of the landed and the dispossessed.

Like Le Roi Ladurie's Montaillou and Gough's History of Myddle, the story of Bloody Marsh explores in microcosm great historical events, and show how they transformed the lives of real people. Nick Catling's black and white photographs also show how the story is grounded in a beautiful, living landscape: a real place where the visitor can sense in an almost visceral way the presence of the past.

Peter Warner is Dean of Homerton College, Cambridge, where he teaches archaeology. Nick Catling is a professional photographer and runs a gallery in Southwold, Suffolk.

                          Book Description

The seventeenth century was a time of great social and political upheaval in China. In Crisis and Transformation in Seventeenth-Century China, Chun-shu Chang and Shelley Hsueh-lun Chang offer a detailed and engaging analysis of society, culture, and the state in China during this critical period.
The main thread of the book follows the life and works of a remarkable figure of the period, Li Yü (1611-80), whose vast array of accomplishments and experiences mirror seventeenth-century China in all its complexity and excitement. Li Yü's China was a world of unprecedented changes in almost all spheres of life. A thriving commercial and industrial economy, stupendous population growth, and the emergence of a new age of science and technology were accompanied by intense urbanization, radical views on money, wealth, and luxury, liberal attitudes toward sexuality, and developments that would change the nature of the literary and intellectual world. The Changs' exhaustive exploration of Chinese historical and literary sources of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is combined with a selective application of interpretive insights and analytic techniques from the major theoretical schools.
An important resource for scholars in history, literature, and Asian studies, Crisis and Transformation extends its appeal to those interested in the history of science, issues of gender and social transformation, and popular culture movements.
Chun-shu Chang is Professor of History, University of Michigan, and Honorary Professor of Chinese History, China. Shelley Hsueh-lun Chang is Visiting Associate Professor of History and Research Associate, Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan.

One of the fiercest and most wide-ranging debates in historical circles during the last decade has concerned the theory that, throughout Europe, the seventeenth century was a period of crisis so significant and intense that it could be labeled a "General Crisis".

This updated volume takes the still acrimonious debate up to today. Geoffrey Parker and Lesley Smith have collected ten important subsequent essays concerning the social, economic and political crises which affected Europe and Asia in the mid-seventeenth century. This edition of The General Crisis of the Seventeenth Century contains fresh research, new perspectives and completely updated bibliographies and index.

Several theses discussing the much debated cause of the crisis of the 17th Century and whether it actually existed. Views ranging from solely economic attributes to lack of governmental flexibility to change with the times is argued as the sole reasons for the crisis. Some center completely on Europe, showing their ethnocentrism, while other acknowledge the existence and contribution of the growing South-East Asian colonies. As a whole, most if not all the possible contributing factors are presented at one point or the other. This compilation is often used in graduate courses to stimulate discussion on the topic.

This book is a collection of essays on the historical theory of the 'Crisis of the Seventeenth Century'. The basis of this theory is that do to a number of reasons, European counries jointly experainced national crisises during the Seventeenth Century. As the Seventeenth Century includes the Thirty Years War and the English Revelution this sounds like an plaudible theory. Some modern historians theorize that the poor weather was the cause of this general Crisis. Taking this train of logic to its natural conclusion, the book includes a number of essays on whether there was a General Crisis in the entire world or not. In my opinion, this book is intended for the serious History student and is certainly not good for someone who doesn't already know the History of the Seventeenth Century.

                            Book Description

                              Book Description

How can we better understand and treat those suffering from schizophrenia and manic-depressive illnesses? This important new book takes us into the world of those suffering from such disorders. Using self descriptions, its emphasis is not on how mental health professionals view sufferers, but on how the patients themselves experience their disorder. Central to the book is the idea that schizophrenic persons live like disembodied spirits or deanimated bodies. As disembodied spirits, they feel like abstract entities which contemplate their own existence and the world from outside. As deanimated bodies, schizophrenic people feel deprived of the possibility of living personal experiences - perceptions, thoughts, emotions - as their own. A new volume in the International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry series, this book will be of great interest to all those working with sufferers from such disorders - helping them to better understand their mental lives and providing important insights into how best to treat them.
