1 out of 5 stars Radford Book.......2004-06-20

I found this book to be of little use. In fact, I looked through it in about 10 minutes and have not picked it up since.

Had it not been so inexpensive I would have sent it back.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of variety, no photographs.......2001-03-27

Radford's Artistic Bungalows is one of a series of books from Dover (publishers) about house plans. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the accuracy of reproduction- in some cases, if pages in the originals that Dover found are damaged or torn, that page is reproduced in the original with the tear, smudge, blot, or hole showing. So to judge the books, one has to compare each one to others of its kind, and then to decide whether the material in it is thorough and complete according to the standards of its time. Since there are several dozen of these catalogs published by Dover, we have the basis for such a comparison.

So how does this one shape up compared to, say "California Bungalows of the Twenties" or "Craftsman Bungalows"? Well, there's very little text. Other than an introduction (from the original catalog maker), there is no descriptive text accompanying each house plan. In fact, the same boilerplate paragraph about what the blueprints and specifications include is the only text on each page, other than the house dimensions and the price of the plans. Then, there's no suggestions for furnishing, for colors to paint the house, or for what kind of lot or location the house might be best suited for. Many other catalogs include this kind of description. The illustrations of each house are elaborate drawings/paintings, presented at an angle view. Some catalogs present many of their houses face-on, which means you can't visualize what the sides really look like; the views in this catalog give you an idea of the front and at least one side in every case. There are no photos, and no illustrations of any of the interior of the house, nor of any of the specific styles of built-ins available. Some catalogs show a typical bathroom, a typical living room, etc., and have a few pages showing the styles of kitchen cabinets available; this one doesn't.

On the other hand, this catalog includes a wider variety of architectural styles than the title might suggest, and some of the most interesting exteriors I've seen. Our own house, built in 1919, has curved eaves on the gables meeting curved eaves on the main roof, and we've always wondered whether the architect was on drugs. Now we know that he may have gotten his inspiration from Radford; several of the houses in this book have curved eaves meeting each other. Haven't seen that in other catalogs. The book has a wide definition of what's a bungalow, so there are houses with gambrel roofs, 3-room cottages, and 9-room expensive houses with servants' quarters. One interesting thing about the Radford plans is that, although published in 1908, virtually all of the houses have indoor bathrooms - only 2 plans in the whole book, that I recall, don't have an indoor bathroom. In 1908, that's unusual - many other contemporary plan books have as much as a quarter to a third of their models without a complete indoor bathroom or even an indoor toilet. Not only that, many of Radford's houses have both an upstairs full bath and a downstairs half-bath (toilet and sink) - almost unheard of at the time! So the architects were apparently fairly forward-thinking. A few houses even have two full baths, a feature that otherwise wouldn't become common until 40 years later.

The floor plans are, for the most part, large enough to be clearly readable, and there are only a couple of cases where the architects have left off the dimensions of a room. Ceiling beams, pull-out beds, built-in seats and benches and shelves, are all indicated on the floor plans.

In sum: good variety of exteriors and floor plans, some advanced features for the time; poor in its lack of interior illustrations or actual photos of completed houses. This shouldn't be your only plan book - there are others with lots more detail if you are just getting acquainted with the genre - but if you are collecting several such books, then this one is a nice addition to the variety in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating look back...........2000-07-15

I'm obsessed with bungalows and cottages, so I found this book a wonderful resource. Some of the designs and plans shown were absolutely bizarre...I'm always looking for local examples to examine. I also loved the practical use of space and simple designs, like smaller bathrooms and larger living areas. Call me crazy but these houses have twice the charm of the monstrosities being erected today. If you tend to wax nostalgic, I recommend adding this book to your home library.

Book Description

Enchanting ceramic figurines made by Muriel Joseph George have captivated collectors since World War II. Originally made to fill the empty hours while her husband was away at war, they soon became a means for Murial to express her love of children, families, animals, and all things bright and beautiful. For more than 40 years--until 1985--new "Josef Originals" models were produced by the company she started, most designed by Murial herself. This new book contains full-color photographs of almost 700 Josef Originals never before published, including many that collectors never knew existed. No collector of miniature figurines should be without this valuable reference, which identifies model and series names, sizes, and color variations, along with a current price guide.

            Book Description

Shifting the focus from intervention with problem populations, this book targets the everyday socialization of African American children. African American Children is a comprehensive exploration of historical and contemporary patterns of parenting in black families. Historically, it focuses on how slavery, race, the racial caste system, and the African American culture influenced the ways African Americans parented their children. This series of social forces seriously circumscribed the ability of African Americans to conform to the ideologies about the nature of children and the roles of parents that began to evolve in the early 20th century. In the context of growing diversity, Shirley A. Hill examines the work that African American parents do in raising their children and explores general child socialization patterns as well as parenting issues and challenges. Providing an analysis of the views, philosophies, and parenting strategies of parents from a variety of social class backgrounds, African American Children combines qualitative and quantitative data collected to examine a broad overview of current theoretical debates about African

American families as they relate to child socialization. Topics include discipline strategies, sexual socialization, teen sexuality, self-esteem, redefining physical attractiveness, gender roles, and the role of the extended family and community.

This book is an ideal supplemental text for advanced students in child development, family studies, sociology of the family, as well as students in ethnic studies, multicultural counseling, or gender studies.

            Book Description

The definitive and complete biography of General Joshua Chamberlain-hero of Gettysburg--by one of America's top Civil War historians.

Joshua Chamberlain became the "hero of Gettysburg" when he and his regiment, the 20th Maine, bravely held Little Round Top against a determined Rebel assault. Chamberlain's reputation as a celebrated soldier continued to grow in the decades that followed the war. Yet, Joshua Chamberlain, the soldier, is only part of the story of his remarkable life.

Edward G. Longacre's biography of Joshua Chamberlain is the first biography to examine the entire life and career of this complicated man. The author skillfully investigates and analyzes all aspects of his life and character--before and after the Civil War. And Longacre re-examines Chamberlain's extraordinary military career as a Union officer, drawing on independent-and occasionally contradictory-eyewitness accounts of his battlefield actions. Longacre's meticulous research also suggests that Chamberlain's own account of his military actions can no longer be taken entirely at face value.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Nah - no bias here! (Yeah, right...).......2005-07-12

This book is an unfortunate and biased view of the personal and military life of Joshua Chamberlain. The book is presented in a typically 21st Century journalistic fashion that seeks to over-scrutinize and under-source faults of a 19th Century person to make him "more human". This book is filled with many "statements" from various accounts that suggest many of Chamberlains actions and deeds were embellished and/or fictionalized, often simply on one persons say so or on more that a few occasions, a non-specific hint, rumor or innuendo.
This is not to suggest that Chamberlain was not a man without fault, just that in this authors eyes, little of what Chamberlain says or does is given any credibility, especially if refuted by any other source, no matter how weak. His only test for credibility is the mere existence of any question of events, actions, comments, etc. The fact is - Chamberlain was human; time, technology and points of view limit our ability to really know or believe every minute detail and every person who conflicted anything related to Chamberlains life, except apparently to Longacre who like many in the various vehicles of today's media seeps bias with less regard for truth and more for digging dirt. The broad strokes of Chamberlain's life suggests a noble, educated, respected and occasionally heroic life. This book is an unnecessary and weak effort in throwing mud at what a majority of authors and public felt was an good and honorable man. The world and our nation wants and needs heroes and heroines. Which ones would survive the microscopic moral compass of todays media? What value exists in always tearing them down?

            Pass on this book.

4 out of 5 stars Full of interesting material.......2004-01-14

Being a Civil War fanatic and scholar I had a tremendous interest in Joshua L. Chamberlain, and most of that interest is from the Killer Angels and the movie Gettysburg. I took this book from the perspective that I knew nothing of Chamberlain. I found Edward Longacre's biography well written and well researched even if his main source of material was Spears memoirs. Longacre dispels many myths of Chamberlain and presents facts to show perhaps a different perspective of the man's career. Sure, Longacre agrees that Chamberlain was a terrific and courageous soldier, arguably one of the best in the union army. But he also understands that JLC had his flaws and can be criticized for being selfish at times. I think the average reader plants the image of Chamberlain from "Gettysburg" or Killer Angels in their brain as they read the book, and that is whythe reviews are mostly poor ones. We must remember that anything Chamberlain wrote after 1865 about the War should be taken for some inaccuracies. Longacre is right that Chamberlain is a romanticizer and prefers the good story over the correct one. I assume Longacre made some mistakes and for that I took a star away but I truly enjoyed this book because it didn't portray Chamberlain as a godly hero but rather as an incredible human being.

2 out of 5 stars Some interesting points, but below average overall.......2003-03-26

I am a admirer of both Ellis Spear and Joshua Chamberlain. They were brave men who served their country well in a time of crisis. After the war it appears that Spear and Chamberlain had a falling out. Neither Spear or Chamberlain are without faults, no one is. However, the author has attempted to make mountains out of mole hills.

This book is not without merit, but does not measure up to John Pullen's work.

            3 out of 5 stars A Hero Under attack.......2001-07-16

This is an unfortunate account of a real American hero. Longacre seems to be doing his best to discount many other historical works on Chamberlain. His countless references to Ellis Spear as his authority tells the tale of this very flawed and critical work. Make no decisions on Joshua Chamberlain until you have read other author's accounts.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but flawed.......2000-12-31

Longacre has a long history of producing civil war books which are compromised by gaffes and errors. This effort is no exception though the writing is superior to some of his earlier works. If you dislike it when an author interjects his own opinion into the arena, then avoid this book. Longacre continually puts his own spin on various events in Chamberlain's life, particularly JLC's long, sometimes tortured relationship with wife Fanny.

It's interesting to read the author's take on the love letters exchanged by the enamored couple, especially those from the courtship years. He takes innocuous passages and turns them into (imagined) references to abortion, pre-marital sex and other "juicy" forays. The problem is, the letters are generally pedestrian and devoid of sexual content. No matter, Longacre insists on the tabloid version of historical events and this is the book's ultimate downfall.

His descriptions of JLC's Petersburg wound and his lengthy convalescence are better sections, but he drops the ball with all the material post-1865. The years of Chamberlain's Governorship of Maine are especially tedious. If you aren't bothered by factual mistakes and the interjection of the author's own opinion, then this book is a reasonable effort. It's well-written and contains some new material. But if you are a serious student of Chamberlain or want a more complete analysis of the 20th Maine, you must consult other works.

                Book Description

In this concise history of France since 1815, David Parry and Pierre Girard examine distinctive features of contemporary France, tracing their origins, and investigating their continuities and transformations. Each chapter focuses on a particular chronological period: beginning by setting the scene in terms of political events, the narrative then broadens out to consider the wider issues of society, economics, religion, the arts, gender relations, and France's relationship with Europe and with the rest of the world. This clearly written, accessible text will appeal to undergraduates studying French history, politics, and culture, as well as the general reader.
