Book Description
The architect and teacher Samuel Mockbee, founder of Auburn University's Rural Studio, was an idealist who put into action one of the boldest programs in contemporary architecture. Mockbee led his students in the design and construction of homes, community centers and other essential structures in Hale County, Alabama--one of the poorest counties in the United States. Mockbee believed that architecture could play a determining role in combating the brutalities of poverty. He inspired students to create vanguard designs and utilize an array of innovative, cost-effective building materials that included scraps of carpet baled into rectangular building blocks. This combination of ingenuity and enterprise informed the unique character of Mockbee's undertaking. Samuel Mockbee and the Rural Studio appraises Mockbee's unique contribution, assessing how he believed that architecture, practiced as a community-oriented undertaking, could transform the social environment.
Customer Reviews:
Architecture versus a poor rural village = a win-win situation.......2005-12-27
The author/architect, as another reviewer aptly put it has his heart in the right place. This reader found the book interesting, but after the first few projects the pictures really say it all. The residences were interesting, from a material and design point of view. I believe the design of the meeting places were all too small to be effective. I thought it was a unique, rewarding book, in an area I had never considered before, and I thought it was a win-win situation, young architects get to experiment with designs and some rural poor struggling homeowner obtains an upgraded house. Perhaps anopther "only in America situation" can it be said that a rural struggling southern village should sport some avant gard architecture. Interesting use of packed earth throughtout the book, but limited in scope
Tremendous Act of Compassion.......2005-07-25
I think Mockbee has taken decency and kindness to a whole new dimension. I love seeing someone completely change perspectives in an industry, or anything else for that matter. This is a great book about the future role of architecture.
An architecture of decency.......2004-12-08
Truly an inspirational collection of the internationally reknown Sambo and the Rural Studio. This is a must for every idealistic designer who would like to see the social ramifications architecture could have. Proceed and be bold.
Must-have Inspiration.......2004-11-29
Visionary Architect, Sambo Mockbee, practiced and taught the importance of designing for all people. The beautifully vernacular, student-built structures not only stimulate the rural imagination, but serve the most basic needs of their owners. This collection of stories and remembrances of The Heart of the Rural Studio programme, is informative and inspiring. Also contains an index of Rural Studio projects '01-'03 and many of Sambo's original sketches and paintings. A must-read for all young architects. A treasure for all that love and miss Sambo.
shadow knows.......2004-05-10
Heart seems to be in the right place...definately unsophisticated idealistic student work...Replacing traditional shacks with funky new age scrap shacks...Traditional/functional vernacular type buildings might have been a better long term choice and value for those concerned...

Customer Reviews:
Lots of nice floral projects.......2000-08-13
This book has lots of doable projects. I would classify the skill level as beginner to intermediate, but be prepared to come up with you own color schemes because there are no photographs of completed projects.
About 95% of the patterns have floral themes: lots of tulips, roses, lilies and other generic flowers. There are also a few pattern with women's profiles, two peacocks, a fish, and a very impressive butterfly pattern (I have seen this one for sale at the auction sites several times). All-in-all this book would be a nice addition to your collection.
Art Nouveau Stained Glass Pattern Book.......2000-05-26
This is a great book..as long as you have a good grasp of the relevant colors and at least a little experience with the whole painting on glass idea. The patterns are wonderful and very reminescent of a lot of the fabulous work seen in the art deco period hotel windows and in older tiffany glass. There are some wonderful projects even for more or less beginners, although I would not class these projects as "starter projects". But heck its only paint and glass basically so if you make a mess...start over!

PAMELA-TRULY A MODERN-DAY HEROINE/BEAUTY.......1999-03-01
Pamela Anderson in Pictures will be a classic about photography as well as personalities. PAMELA ANDERSON-THE MOST EXTRAORDINARILY GORGEOUS BEAUTIFUL, SEXY AND TALENTED WOMEN OF THE UNIVERSE. I have Never seen so many GREAT photos of a Beautiful Lady all in one place. The penultimate PAM book!!
BEAUTY AT ITS FINEST!.......1998-11-30
My only complaint, no nudity, her body is so beautiful! I really enjoyed this book! I love her skinny eyebrows and body, her beautiful eyes, her full lips(natural), I dont like her (1991-92) look. Too girl next door, we have enough of those!! Pamela Anderson is one of few women, like myself, that really enjoys being sexy, thin, beautiful!!! Why should she go back to being chubby, thick eyebrows, short hair, no makeup? I don't know about you, but I feel we need more women like Pamela Anderson! She is a sweet person, she cares about the world, she loves her children and is a good mom, she has a great personality! Well take my opinion and go pick up a copy, you'll love it and if you don't, well theres always Sandra Bullock,(boring)!
For Pamela Anderson fans only!.......1998-03-31
Usual Pamela Anderson, includes herself and not much more. She displays everything in the here and now, she's a real material girl. If your a fan of hers then go for the book, otherwise you won't enjoy it. She communicates her problems as they exist and sometimes doesn't know when to stop. Her life with Tommy Lee and her life without Tommy Lee is explained. Theres more to her than just this book.
The Making Of a Monster.......1998-03-31
You have to look at it as it was meant to be seen. Compared to, say, the literary works of John Updike or the photography of Helmut Newton, this book is trash-bin material. On the other hand, if you're a Pamela Lee fanatic, you will probably erect a shine and this book will be the centerpiece, surrounded by a display of candles in busty-women shapes.
The interesting thing about this book is watching the progression/transmogrification of Pamela. She starts out very attractive and shapely, and somewhat sweet and innocent; there are even close-up shots of her face in which her blemishes haven't been masked by excessive make-up or airbrushed out, and here you can see a large numbers of freckles spackling her face. It makes you remember that Pamela was once a real person, a sweet-faced and attractive woman who tried very hard in interviews to sound brainy and far above her designation as a human Barbie doll.
Then came the implants, which augmented her breasts to unbelievable--and indeed, to this viewer's eyes--grotesque proportions. Was it necessary? Absolutely not. (Is it ever? Not even once.) Then the plucked eyebrows, and the tattoos, and the tight leather "Barb Wire" outfits, and the marriage to Tommy Lee... and the result? Pamela's looks and brains plunged out the window, holding hands and shrieking all the way down.
Today Pamela Anderson Lee is a gross caricature, an online joke, and an object of fixation only for those who prefer human beings be manufactured of plastic and silicone. The latter half of the book reflects Pamela's transformation from human being to human sexual monstrosity. Her continued popularity in various, often shadowy, circles is a testament only to the depraved mind-set of a select and lonely few.
This isn't exactly a critical study, however; nor is it precisely a piece of fan fluff from a photographer who seems to have more or less made his name solely from having the good fortune of shooting a star before she reached the stratosphere. It is, after all, a picture book, and a fairly well-made one at that. But in and around the pictures, in the margins and around the eyes and chest of its subject matter, one finds an interesting, if depressing, pictorial study of a woman in a steep decline of her life, body, and senses--a sex machine running on automatic. If there are any women out there thinking they aren't "adequate" because they don't conform to the "ideal" sexual designs men so often inflict upon the opposite gender, one gander at the devolution of Pamela from attractive human to awful automaton ought to rebuild some self-esteem and render the point more than moot.

Assume nothing -- and expect anything!.......2000-03-25
This is a graphic novel with a wonderfully simple, sketchy, but expressive cartoon style. I assume this is autobiographical or semi-autobiographical in nature; we follow the main character as she "comes out" as a woman who loves other women -- and sometimes men. I really got into her adventures as she tries to find the right woman, checks out artificial insemination, adopts a puppy, and finds a very strange treasure in an abandoned building she squatted in for a year. Hilarious!

Book Description
Shortly after her thirty-seventh birthday, Wall Street Journal reporter and editor Laura Landro was told that she had chronic myelogenous leukemia. Survivor is the remarkable account of her battle against this devastating, potentially fatal cancer -- and her successful struggle to take control of her own case.
At first almost paralyzed with fear when diagnosed with this form of blood cancer, Landro resolved to use her journalistic training to seek out the treatment that would give her the best shot at surviving. Noting that most Americans spend more time researching what kind of car to buy than they do their health care, she shows how and why all patients can -- and must -- arm themselves with the facts, learn to understand medical jargon, get doctors to answer all their questions in layman's terms, weigh conflicting medical opinions, and make the difficult choice among the options open to them.
Landro's inspiring story offers all readers hope and the know-how to navigate the terrifying and bewildering world of medicine, even when they are very ill and at their most vulnerable.

Customer Reviews:
Should be required reading.......2001-12-15
Ms. Landro is the quintessential reporter who 'reported' the biggest story of her life, and thereby saved it in the process. She described how she took charge of her battle against leukemia, rather than ceding her life to what looked like very dangerous medicine, and it worked. Landro's story is about the incredible power of a bright and utterly rational person to shape her destiny and survive because of it. The book belongs in hotel rooms with the Gideon Bible (no, INSTEAD of the Gideon Bible...) and ought to be dispensed in pharmacies and physicians offices. It's the ultimate celebration of the human will to survive.
5 stars if you need a BMT; 1 star if you don't.......2000-10-21
Reviewing this book gives me problems. My spouse is awaiting a bone marrow transplant for CML, the same disease that Landro had. And in many ways, this book was very good, empowering us by leading us to good websites, recommending the book Mira's Month for my small daughter , and letting us know what to expect as far as side effects, etc. What I think the book lacks is emotion/humanness--although there are times that Landro tells us how she feels, much more ofetn things are summed up by "just get through it." I also believe that Landro's experiences with her transplant may not be as relative to people like us, who have financial concerns, who have small children, who are not fortunate enough to have a perfect sibling match (we do, happily, have perfect unrelated donor matches--bless them!). I think that Landro's choice to not name her husband was unsettling--although she probably chose not to in order to respect his privacy, I feel it would have been better to state that at the outset--I was left with the impression that although he did accompany her through a very difficult time, he was not worthy of a name. Another very real problem I have with this book is its title--I believe that it is a marketing ploy, because I do not believe IN ANY WAY that this book is about "taking control of your fight against cancer"--it is about one woman's bone marrow transplant, and I knew that going in; had I bought this book thinking it would empower me to fight against cancer, I would be very disappointed, because although one or two chapters may deal with that, it certainly is not true of the whole book. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone undergoing a BMT, but I would not recommend it to someone with prostate cancer or melanoma--it simply is not relevent to cancers that do not require a BMT. I am asking our friends to buy it, because it is very relevant to OUR type of cancer and our need for a BMT--but may not be to other people who are not in this particular boat.
A primer for doctors in the information age.......2000-07-14
Laura Landro tells her story of survival from chronic myelogenous leukemia and bone marrow transplantation with the excitement and fullness of fine fiction.
As she enters " the netherworld of medicine", Laura's journalist's instincts kick in. Information proves crucial, for she must choose between two cancer centers with subtly differing treatment protocols and prepare for the certain loss of ovarian function to chemotherapy.
Attitude and humor help pass the darkest sickroom days. Imagine watching Laura, pallid from anemia and bloated from steroids, primp, preparing her face for the future. A reading of her mother's daily log defines determination and suggests, incidentally, that fine writing must be hereditary. Humor is good medicine: Her brothers' constant high spirits penetrate the wall of pain. Her colleagues from "The Wall Street Journal" perform a hilarious video skit that pulls her toward the future.
Support materializes from friends and "the ranks of afflicted want to reach out to you...and put you in touch with experts who helped them." At a near breaking point for Laura, Marilyn's unforgettable letter plums the depths and eloquence of friendship.
Healing goes beyond hospital walls.
If Survivor is a "survival guide" for patients, it is equally a primer for healthcare providers in the information age. Patients who arrive with Internet pages are today's survivors. Like Laura Landro, they plan to "come out on the other side". Doctors couldn't play on a better team.
Guidebook for a "cancer experience" from a survivor.......1998-12-07
Laura has done an excellent job of not only sharing an intensely personal cancer experience, but she has also gathered together multiple resources and self-advocacy behaviors under one bookcover to aide all individuals, families or friends confronted with the same. Her forthright honesty, ability to include even the little daily details of living/surviving, and her fantastic sense of humor blend together to give a sense of control and hope to all of us. Almost everyone today is touched in some way by cancer, whether it be ourselves, a family member or a friend. We can all learn from what Laura has shared. I commend her greatly for such an insightful and useful book.
Spellbinding triumph over disease and adverstiy.......1998-11-01
The brilliance of Laura's book is in the use of her keen intellect to save her own life. The lessons she teaches us can be used by any patient in any disease to be the system...and beat the disease that threatens their life.

no title.......2006-01-04
Warning - do not read this if you do not want to know how the book ends.
What an odd little book. Whatever else it is, it is haunting, even though I feel the ending to be a cheat somehow. But something in me saw it coming, felt that Paul was not dead, just not in the way the book has him. To have changed identities with Wexford Bone? And in all these years did he ever paint again? Now he is a murderer? It was he who killed Walter and Edna Haggard? For the author to do this has completely diminished the power he had so painstakenly built up in him as an artist of worth. Now he's just a demented killer. It was such a wonderful story of the artist. Now. It's been cheapened. Went for the jolt to the reader, the shock value. I feel let down.

Since the limited Desert Fox campaign against Iraq in December 1998, the Tomcat has been integral to virtually all combat operations involving the US Navy in the Arabian Gulf. Indeed, on every carrier deployment to the Persian Gulf since Desert Fox, the F-14 unit(s) on station has ventured into ‘The Sand Box’ over southern Iraq and prosecuted targets operating in contravention to United Nations security council resolutions. This book covers the F-14 Operation Iraqi Freedom actions against battlefield targets and integrated air defence sites, command and control centres, regime leadership targets and military installations in Baghdad, Tikrit, Mosul and Kirkuk.

Book Description
In 1603 King James I ascended the throne to become the first King of a united England and Scotland. There followed a period of increasing religious and political discord, culminating in the English Civil War. The Early Stuart Kings, 1603-1642 explores these complex events and the roles of the key personalities of the time - James I and VI, Charles I, Buckingham, Stratford and Laud.
Book Description
The precise mathematical investigation of various natural phenomena is an old and difficult problem. This book is the first to deal systematically with the general non-selfadjoint problems in mechanics and physics. It deals mainly with bounded domains with smooth boundaries, but also considers elliptic boundary value problems in tube domains, i.e. in non-smooth domains. This volume will be of particular value to those working in differential equations, functional analysis, and equations of mathematical physics.
