    Book Description

No empire in history built so variously as the British empire in India: the buildings there attest to the richness of an imperial presence that lasted - from the first trading settlement to the end of the Raj - some three hundred years. The attitude of the British to India was compounded partly of arrogance, but partly also of homesickness, and it shows in their constructions. Georgian terraces were adapted to tropical conditions, Victorian railway stations were elaborately orientalized, seaside villas were adjusted to suit Himalayan conditions, and everywhere the fundamental ambivalence of the British empire, a baffling mixture of good and evil, was mirrored in the imperial architecture. This book, now reissued with a new introduction by Simon Winchester, was the first to describe the whole range of British constructions in India. The text and photographs illustrate these buildings not simply as physical objects, but as reflections of an empire's mingled emotions. Stones of Empire charts an enterprise in architecture, engineering, and social adaptation unique in human history.

This book is just a blast -- it is so fun and inspirational. It made me happy that I own a crappy old car, because now I can run out and paint it without worrying about the resale value.

I read Harrod's first book after seeing some art cars at The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. After that, the seeds were planted! In a few months I had made my first art car. I finally got to meet Harrod and get a copy of Art Cars when he appeared with several of us exhibiting our creations at Artscape. It was fun to ooh and aah over pictures of many other art car folks in this book who have become good friends of mine in the past few years. Art Cars will inspire you to go out RIGHT NOW and start decorating your vehicle!

Do not waste your $$$ on this book. The other reviews here are accurate when they say it is amateurishly written and the visual examples are even worse than the writing. You can gain greater inspiration and learn far more FOR FREE by perusing online resources such as renderosity.com, poserworld.com or any of the other poser community links at Curious Labs' website. There you will find complete tutorials and beautifully done CG artwork to feed your mind and imagination.

            2 out of 5 stars Absolutely Dreadful.......2003-10-07

            Absolutely Dreadful

Sometimes ya gotta wonder how someone gets picked for a job. The author of this book is a horrible CG artist (click on the book cover photo for proof) and not a particularly good writer. He spends 4 sentences saying something that could be said in one, and then, in the following step-by-step example, he will leave out a crucial step or two. If you do manage to figure out the steps he forgot to tell you about and thereby finish the exercise, what you are left with is an image that looks like one of his - i.e. horrible. Wow, now that's bad.

I only bought this book because, after six months, I got tired of waiting for the Peachpit Press's Poser 5 Visual Quick Start book to come out. The Visual Quick Start series is a wonderful series. I have a least half a dozen of those books, and they've all been good. As for Charles River Media, the publisher of this book, all the books of theirs that I've seen or purchased have been highly doubtful.

The only reason that I don't give this book one star is that if you do fill in the missing steps yourself, and if you come up with your own parameter settings, you can make some pretty cool stuff. Poser 5 is an exciting, powerful "new" program, and this book will give you just enough information to just barely make it over that "newness" hump. Which is more than I can say about the manual that came with the program. It is even worse than this book (how's that possible?).

Bottom line - if Peachpit Press's Poser 5 Visual Quick Start book is available (now due October 21, 2003, but don't bet on it) - buy that instead. If not, and you really want some info now - buy this book and live to regret it. What a choice!

3 out of 5 stars Average at best.......2003-07-13

I found myself lost several times in this book, as the author left out key points in the walkthrough that I had to look on the web to find out what he was asking (how to save a material/cloth for example, he just says "now save the material" - ok how?). Not for a beginner, in my opinion, and more painful than anything. The book does help you get an understanding of the fundamentals, and I especially like the fact that instead of just giving you a bunch of settings, he gives you the settings then explains what they each mean. However, dont expect to walk away an expert, some of the exercises are a struggle and will leave you backtracking steps to find out where you went wrong. The end-product examples weren't all that impressive either, they looked very amateurish and crude.

2 out of 5 stars Files not on CD again!.......2003-06-09

I have the Poser 4 Handbook which is largely cut and pasted word for word from the Poser 3 Handbook. I can only hope that Mr. Mortier has done a better job with this one. I have read the previous reviews but bought it anyways and am now disappointed. He uses examples and software not included on the CD. So when I went to the bookstore and saw that there is new Poser 5 Handbook I looked at the examples and the software necessary to complete them and once again that are not on the CD! How do you expect someone to complete tutorials with programs they don't have, figures they don't have. If you want to really invest your time and money into Poser then this is the book for you. You can buy all the programs and extra figures necessary to complete Mr. Mortier's tutorials. A good book to get is the Poser 4 fx and design or wait till Secrets of Figure Creation in Poser 5 is released.

4 out of 5 stars A decent basic tutorial, will not turn you into a Poser guru.......2003-05-27

The first part of the book is by Shamms Mortier, who gives an overview of Poser's features. The second half is a collection of articles and tutorials by other artists who seem to be much more accomplished than Mr. Mortier. (The difference in quality between Mortier's work in the interior color plates and those of other artists is rather glaring.)

The "overview" portion is not bad. For the most part it simply rehashes information found in the Poser manual, but does so in more detail and in a more readable form, offering several tutorials to give you some hands-on practice. It will not be helpful to anyone who already has some familiarity with Poser or other 3D programs, but if you are a complete novice like me, it's a good introduction to Poser's rooms and basic features.

The tutorials written by other people cover more advanced topics, and while by themselves they will not turn you into an expert, they do give you some idea of what it takes to create your own models, textures, and characters. Some of the topics are fairly advanced, far beyond the level of anyone who is working their way through the first part of the book.

So, I would recommend this book for a Poser newbie who wants help getting started, and to dip his toe into more advanced techniques. If you already kind of know how to use Poser and want to learn more advanced techniques, this book may give you a few useful tidbits, but you will probably be better off searching sites like Renderosity and RuntimeDNA and PoserPros for the numerous tutorials offered there for free.

              Book Description

Containing all the best elements of sci-fi, spy fiction, and conspiracy theory stories, Project Arms is about kids whose arms transform into grotesquely deformed superweapons. In this volume, just when Ryo and Hayato learn that the third ARMs kid is Takashi Tomoe — the new transfer student at their school — the mysterious Egrigori organization deploys precocious twins Jeff and Al Bowen to go after them. Using their hi-tech cyborg goons Plus and Minus, the deceptively innocent-looking Bowens plan a merciless assault on Ryo's school. The only way the ARMs kids will survive is by working together — but Hayato's a hot-headed lone wolf and Takashi just wants to hide.

              4 out of 5 stars A stand-out manga that becomes addictive........2005-03-24

Okay, let's suppose you're walking to school one morning, feeling perfectly fine despite the fact that you know you're heading to hours of boredom, when a kid you've never even seen before tells you he wants to kill you. The kid reveals his arm, and it transforms into a lethal killing scythe. What do you do? Welcome to the world of Ryo Takatsuki, as displayed in Project Arms, Vol.1.
A secret organization, Egrigori, is pursuing Ryo Takatsuki and three other kids with certain superweapons for arms, called (get ready), ARMS!!! In the first volume you get a heavy dosage of action, cunning fight scenes, and an addictive plot. It's a very solid story that contains many aspects of mastery.
The only thing that subtracts from the rating is that, other than the action and fighting scenes, the characters are drawn to look more like sketches, although you can clearly tell one from the other. Keep in mind- this manga is hard to find. If you happen to see it at Borders or some other book store, BUY IT! You may not see it again for awhile!

              5 out of 5 stars Addictive entertainment.......2004-04-15

This book continues the addictive "Project Arms" series. This book is even better than the two before with lots of action and intrigue. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have-- I just can't stop reading this series.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome action, good story ..........2003-12-30

This is a very solid, action-packed manga ... the characters are pretty good, they are interesting to see interact. The story keeps you guessing with the intervention of the military, and the truth behind the Arms and the nano-technology. Good stuff.

                H. G. Wells continues to be widely read as a novelist, short story writer, and as the father of science fiction. Because he was deeply involved with the literary, social, and political issues of his time, a chronology of his life is in a sense a history of ideas in the 20th century. J. R. Hammond offers a definitive chronology of Wells that provides a fascinating insight into the background, life, and times of a major literary figure.

                Book Description

Wells had an intense curiosity and used it to investigate and share the entire history of the world in a condensed form. Wells, the great science fiction writer who wrote The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man, was fascinated with the real world just as much as his imaginary ones. This book is a testament to his genius and immense knowledge involving the key events of humanity throughout the history of the world. He allows us to witness how we learned, grew, and reached deeper understandings throughout our physical, intellectual, and spiritual evolution. He also reveals that we are still in our infancy and have only just begun an immense and important journey. The pattern he lays out shows that we are moving toward new ways of understanding, growth, and wisdom.

At last the Assyrians became the greatest military power of the time. Tiglath Pileser III conquered Babylon in 745 B.C. and founded what historians call the New Assyrian Empire. Iron had also come now into civilization out of the north; the Hittites, the precursors of the Armenians, had it first and communicated its use to the Assyrians, and an Assyrian usurper, Sargon II, armed his troops with it.

                5 out of 5 stars Just Superb!!.......2007-07-22

In addition to all of the other glowing and positive reviews below, I'd like to humbly add the following......

When it came to my O'levels (GCSE's), I was given the choice of History or Geography; looking back I think it was unfortunate that I chose Geography.

I stumbled across an earlier version of this book about 30 years ago and have never looked back. For me it made the subject so interesting and accessible. The read is absolutely captivating and you really won't want to put it down once you've started.

Obviously because of the author, the book only goes up to around the time of WWII. If you enjoy this book as much I have then you may wish to expand your knowledge with dynamite read by "J.M. Roberts" called "The New Penguin History of the World".

Both of these books are classics, or certainly will be and really ought to be in pride of place in all school book library history sections if not on each student's desk during history lessons!! Essential reading and fantastic reference for any history buff.

                5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2003-10-23

Writing a history of the world that is fun to read, easy to understand, and not a gazillion pages long is no easy task. Wells has done it in a masterful way.

This is a book for all ages as it is written in an extremely simple and clear manner.

5 out of 5 stars Erudite, vivid, and entertaining...essential reading........2003-05-12

This is the book that had such a powerful impact on Malcolm X. Its easy to see why. The history of the world is vividly outlined in an erudite and readable style. (Ever since I read `The Time Machine' when I was sixteen, I have considered Wells to be the clearest writer of prose in the English language.) Wells takes us from the very beginning of life right up to the League of Nations in 1922, stopping off at most points in-between: Neolithic cavemen, Periclean Athens, Roman and Byzantium civilisations, the life of Jesus, Confucius and Lao Tse, the rise of Islam, the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, discovery of America, the Industrial Revolution, World War I, and so on. The book is breathtaking in its scope, but Wells manages to give a succinct, vivid and comprehensive view of world history. I have found myself re-reading many of the chapters and I do not doubt that I will soon be re-reading the book in its entirety. There is little to criticise in this book - maybe it is a little Euro-centric; in the last chapters he does tend to labour his point a bit; and the early chapters are a little dated as we now know so much more about the evolution of our species. These are mere quibbles. Read it and become informed. Read it and be entertained.

5 out of 5 stars The World in One Volume.......2000-04-06

If you have ever wondered about how history hangs together, then this is the book for you. From the dawn of civilization to the modern era, Wells takes you along the journey of civilization (and pre-civilization -- the first few chapters of the book cover geology and evolution). This tome, and if ever a volume merited the word this is it, carries you along the way with Alexander, Persian Kings, Khans, Crusaders, Chinese Emperors, Popes, French Citizens, Tsars, and Kaisers. The sweep of characters, times and places includes a wonderful vista of history, all together and seen in relation to its entirety.

Yes, it's dated. Yes, it's slanted. H. G. Wells is very Victorian in his ethics. His politics were Fabian Socialist so you will find a distinct undercurrent for a socialist world government driving the story along. He is as un-Eurocentric as you could expect for the time: Europe and the Middle East take up the majority of the book, China and India play the next biggest role, followed distantly by Africa, Australia and the Americas.

The flaws are few given the task, the style is immensely readable, and the man who wrote The War of the Worlds, Time Machine, The Invisible Man and the Island of Doctor Moreau knows how to tell a story. Wells had the nerve to take on the World and the world gets a ripping good yarn with Mankind as the hero. You're part of the story; why not read it?

This is an excellent book. Hunnicutt has written several volumes on US Army tanks, history, production vehicles and prototypes. This large volume covers not only the Stuart Tank, but all of the vehicles from WWI prior to the Stuart as well as variations and subsequent models. If you purchase this book, you need not buy another on the subject of US light tanks.

There are many excellent photographs of the vehicles, as well as line drawings, cut aways, technical data, specifications- you name it, it's here. I have read this book several times over and enjoy it enormously- there is something to be learned every time you pick it up.

Post WWII light tanks are covered in a seperate volume.

5 out of 5 stars THE reference source on the American light tank!.......1998-12-13

Hunnicutt's work is an absolute must for light tank enthusiasts. Covering earlier development of the American light tank beginning in the 1920's, it ascends through the 1940's. Tanks covered include all variants of the M2, M3, M5, M8 series light tanks and even LVT (Landing Vehicle, Tracked) vehicles. Coverage is also provided, albeit surprisingly, on the M18! Illustrated with black and white and color photos, line drawings and color plates; it includes action as well as technical views. Many photos are drawn from the U.S. Army Ordnance archives and Army technical manuals. This provides not only views of production vehicles, but prototypes and interior shots not normally seen. Technical specifications are also provided for the majority of vehicles illustrated. Overall this book is well worth every dollar spent. A definite "must have" for the armor enthusiast, modeler, or historian!

Napoleon was poisoned! The academic elite hated this theory when Sten Forshufvud first introduced it in 1961, but over the years, working with experts across the globe, he built an increasingly forceful case that an assassin killed Napoleon with arsenic. Assassination at St. Helena Revisited presents the most complete argument yet, and a growing number of authorities now accept its premise as an established fact. (See, for instance, Alan Schom's biography Napoleon Bonaparte.) Forshufvud and coauthor Ben Weider reveal their science and also detail Napoleon's final years of exile on St. Helena. The culprit, they believe, was Comte Charles-Tristan de Montholon, an opportunistic man who had both the motive and means to do the deed. A minor classic of historical and scientific detective work, Assassination at St. Helena Revisited will continue to spark debates, but for now it looks like the conspiracy theorists have the upper hand.

                            Book Description

                            ASSASSINATION AT ST. HELENA REVISITED

Was Napoleon murdered? This baffling question has been sparking hot debates for nearly two hundred years. But, according to Swedish toxicologist Sten Forshufvud and Napoleonic scholar Ben Weider, the answer is an irrefutable yes.

In 1978, their Assassination at St. Helena stunned historians the world over. One of history's most important homicide investigations, it revealed startling yet convincing evidence implicating a nobleman once severely punished by Napoleon. At St. Helena, the nobleman became the defeated leader's most praised and rewarded attendant . . . and his executioner.

In the years since Assassination at St. Helena first appeared, it has come to be regarded as a classic, a historical investigation par excellence. Now new, definitive evidence is presented for the first time in this revised and expanded edition. Assassination at St. Helena Revisited reveals further corroboration of the authors' acclaimed account of Napoleon's final, tragic years.

Carefully researched, with forewords by David G. Chandler and David C. Hamilton-Williams, two of the most respected Napoleonic scholars in the world, this superb volume combines clearly presented scientific evidence with a historical detective story unrivaled in the annals of royal intrigue. Assassination at St. Helena Revisited will surprise, delight, and enthrall Napoleonic buffs everywhere.

BEN WEIDER is internationally known in two fields: sports and Napoleonic history. In the sports field, Dr. Weider is President of the International Federation of Body-Builders (IFBB) and heads the Montreal-based Weider Sports Equipment Co., Ltd., which is dedicated to promoting total fitness. He has been honored by governments in over twenty countries and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. His honors include the Order of Canada, the highest award a Canadian can receive.

Dr. Weider is also a leading Napoleonic historian, having published several books on the life and times of the emperor Napoleon, including Assassination at St. Helena (1978) and the bestselling Murder of Napoleon (1982). He is President of the International Napoleonic Society, with headquarters in Montreal, and a member of the council of Souvenir Napoléonien in Paris. He owns one of the largest private collections of Napoleonic artifacts in the world.

The late STEN FORSHUFVUD was a Swedish scientist who pursued research in the fields of biology and toxicology in many European laboratories. He published numerous papers on subjects in these fields, including the circulation of blood and its functions, plasma, and poisons. His broad knowledge of toxicology, combined with his reading of Napoleonic history, including journals of Napoleon's last days, led him to deduce the true nature of Napoleon's death.

David C. Hamilton-Williams, Bt., B.Sc., ARHist.S, a respected authority on the political and intelligence operations of the Napoleonic period, is the author of Waterloo: New Perspectives and The Fall of Napoleon: The Final Betrayal.

David G. Chandler, M.A. (Oxon.), D.Litt., FRHist.S, considered by many to be one of the foremost living authorities on the military aspects of Napoleon's life, is the former head of the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst, England. He is the author of The Campaigns of Napoleon and, most recently, On the Napoleonic Wars.

Winner of the International Napoleonic Society's Golden Laurel Award as the most important book on Napoleonic research ever undertaken.

How did Napoleon meet his end? It is a question that has baffled historians and Napoleonic buffs alike. Now, a newly revised, expanded edition of the authors' classic work reveals startling new evidence that Napoleon was murdered in exile, and presents the compelling case against the trusted nobleman who was his assassin. History and mystery are potently combined in Assassination at St. Helena Revisited.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but a bit heavy.......2001-01-10

This book was not exactly what I expected. I thought it would be a focused look at the reason the authors thought that Napoleon was assassinated, but much of the text is actually his campaigns and political life. It almost seems that they were trying to make the book look big by adding information that you can easily read in other texts. I really thought this one was going to be different but it fell a little short in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece for history lovers and Napoleonic fans!.......1999-11-22

This formidable story brings us to the magnificent life of one of the greatest heroes ever existing on earth, and of his mysterious death. It all begins on a lavish sofa at Ajjacio, Corsica, on August 15th 1769,when the second child of the Buonaparte family was born. Then it continues with his becoming general, emperor of France, and conqueror of Europe, until his disastrous attack at Moscow, his abdication, the hundred days, and his exile to a little island in the middle of the Atlantic. It culminates with his poisonment of arsenic and goes through a great detail in his last days before his death. It expands new evidence of his intoxication behind the miserable and tragic life inside the walls of Longwood. Was he really poisoned? Who was really the culprit? How can the author be sure of that? Is there a possibility that Napoleon comitted suicide? You can find all of it in this book. If you're a great admirer of this Eagle of France, I'm sure you won't regret.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Story for True Crime and History Lovers.......1999-04-18

This is a wonderful book for anyone who likes history and/or true crime stories. It's amazing that so little has been known about Napoleon's last days, and that so little attention has been paid to such a wonderful book that seeks to explain Napoleon's demise. Through a mix of science and story telling, Weider and Forshufvud weave a tale of intrigue and murder. Their analysis and conclusions are so compelling, and their evidence so convincing, that it would seem impossible for anyone, after reading this book, to believe anything other than Napoleon was poisoned. As someone who is trained in these same forensic sciences and investigative principles, this is a fantastic and accurate book.

                              Book Description

This book is concerned with two major industrial minerals: Lithium and Calcium Chloride. The geology of their deposits is first reviewed, along with discussions of most of the major deposits and theories of their origin. The commercial mining and processing plants are next described, followed by a review of the rather extensive literature on other proposed processing methods. The more important uses for lithium and calcium chloride are next covered, along with their environmental considerations. This is followed by a brief review of the production statistics for each industry, and some of their compounds' phase data and physical properties.

                              - Describes the chemistry, chemical engineering, geology and mineral processing aspects of lithium and calcium chloride
                              - Collects in one source the most important information concerning these two industrial minerals
                              - Presents new concepts and more comprehensive theories on their origin
