Does the term Dutch architecture evoke for you almost sickeningly quaint images of windmills, stone dykes, and Golden Age townhouses? Then hang on to your wooden shoes (or silver skates) and brace yourself for SuperDutch, a superfunky look at what some of the hottest design firms in the Netherlands have been turning out in the past decade or so. If you're familiar with the writing or work of iconoclastic Dutch architect and author Rem Koolhaas, you'll feel at home in this somewhat cerebrally annotated volume that nonetheless boasts a wealth of full-color photographs showcasing the best of the Netherlands's so-called "Second Modernity."

From UN Studio/Van Berkely & Bos, for example, there's the breathtaking Erasmus Bridge on Rotterdam's Mense River, with its superhigh-tech "tensile" engineering and sky-shooting asymmetrical central arm. From Atelier van Lieshout in Rotterdam (where much of what's shown herein is located) comes a profusion of furniture, architectural components (like toilets), and boldly colored, highly modular mobile homes almost lewd in their lumpy, bumpy playfulness of form. MVRDV weighs in here with the Villa VPRO broadcasting center, a big concrete and glass Mondrian grid that's rather homely by day, but when lit at night the full genius of its openness becomes apparent. And from Koolhaas's own Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) comes a handful of examples that demonstrate what his fractured theories look like "in action": the University of Utrecht's floaty, translucent Educatorium; the Congrexpo in Lille, France; and the coldly handsome private residence Villa Bordeaux.

There's a lot more here from a total of a dozen studios--including, in addition to those mentioned above, Wiel Arets, Erick van Egeraat, Mecanoo, Neutelings Riedijk, NOX, Oosterhuis NL, Koen Van Velsen, and West 8. Much of it evokes a kind of harshly and deliberately deconstructivist Blade Runner world where it's much more important to be conceptual and edgy (and, we learn here, frugally executed) than beautiful. Many of the projects featured here (some of which are viewable by clicking on the Look inside this book! link below the cover image) look like they're straining to become alien spacecraft or cybermedia phantasmagoria--indeed, anything but attractive public buildings as we know them, even in our postmodern era. But even when these cutting-edge Dutch treats are ugly, they're never boring. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

Propelled into the limelight by the success of Rem Koolhaas, Dutch architecture is achieving popularity and influence across the globe. Fostered by a cultural interest in architecture (and a government willing to support it), the Netherlands is producing a generation of architects whose work is characterized by inventiveness, whimsy, creative use of materials, and dynamic formal experimentation. Koolhaas and a subsequent generation of Dutch designers routinely get the most sought-after commissions and are among the most widely published in the world. This small yet extremely influential handful of practitioners is shaping the future direction of architecture.?

A phone-book-size collection, SuperDutch features all of the key figures in Dutch architecture today. Their work is presented through detailed drawings and stunning photography.

GREAT reference for students of architecture! Amazing projects.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Architecture.......2001-02-03

A slick tome on recent Dutch architecture, with projects from 12 practices, including Mecanoo, MRVDV and OMA. The author gives an overview on each studio, followed by detailed illustrations of particular projects. If you're interested in recent European architecture, be it small scale or large, this book won't fail to disappoint. Besides covering the Dutch 'staples', it introduces the reader to some architects not yet well known outside Europe, but evidently destined for greatness. The photography is fantastic, and it's nicely packaged in a chunky square, guaranteed to stand out on your bookshelf! An excellent portrayal of architectural work being produced in a small country becoming reknowned as a design hothouse.

5 out of 5 stars Good value for Beginning Artist/ Amateur Naturalist.......2001-08-20

Drawing Trees is a short, over-sized Art course in itself. It starts simply with pencils, erasers and drawing techniques and builds from there. It does not give step-by-step instruction how to draw individual trees, but instead covers different trees as it imparts various drawing techniques. (For example, various pines, a red maple and a white oak are shown in the section on Tree Shapes).

The "lessons" include: Shading; Surface & Textures; Light Values; Perspective; Pictorial Composition;Tree Shapes; Bough & Foliage Shapes; Trunks; Branches & Boughs; Root Patterns; Dead & Fallen Trees; Majestic Oak; and ends with two "scenes" - Sycamore Lane and Sierra Pines.

I am not an artist, so while this may be rather basic for the intermediate-advanced artiest, it gave me a perfect blend of how to draw trees (shapes, branches, roots) with basic art concepts (shading, perspective). The size of the book is awkward and I would have paid more for either a laminated or hardbound eidtion to bring out in the field, but for the price, its a great value. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars stresses numerical solving.......2006-12-12

[A review of the 5th Edition 2006.]

Paz gives a comprehensive explanation of his subject. Suitable to a reader at perhaps the second or third undergraduate year, and who has had some calculus and linear algebra. A substantial portion of the text involves solving linear systems of equations, to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors. And for this, the maths background is essential.

What distinguishes the book from many older texts is the intensive use of computers to solve equations. This permits the tackling of harder problems, that are amenable only to numerical solutions.

Also, if you already use some other numerical package, like Maple or Mathematica, then you can ignore the binaries on the enclosed CD, and just recode.

5 out of 5 stars excelent book to understand the concept.......2006-11-10

This is an excellent book for beginners but doesn't have too much detail on the math part I believe. Still great book to understand the concept.

3 out of 5 stars low quality pictures.......2005-12-30

The material is well structured and the book is written in a clear and concise manner that's why I give five stars to the author. But I am really disappointed because I do believe that is unacceptable nowadays to allow for printing a book with such a poor quality of sketches/pictures. I think that most of them are scanned from previous material, and unfortunately it turned out that the scanning equipment was too sophisticated for author's assistants. So, I rate the publisher with just one star! - Please note that my comment refers to the fifth edition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on structural dynamics.......2000-11-21

This is one of the most comprehensive, easy to understand, book on structural dynamics in the market. Thoroughly recommended for the advanced undergraduate or postgraduate. It may be a bit pricey though i feel.

Black and white adult graphic novel. "Erotic Grotesque" style Japanese Manga. (Labeled: "Graphic Novel/Erotic/Horror/Manga"; "ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR CHILDREN").

An alien invasion of a Japanese University. The aliens attempt to impregnate the females to conquer the world. Main character is a female student named Kayo. Kayo is somewhat helped by a male friend named Tamotsu.

Strange book that begins slowly, has at least one good chapter and then sputters to a disappointing ending. Contains a lot of alien monster rape of women, transformation of humans, violence and sex.

While hindered by being in black and white, the characters are well drawn, and mostly attractive. Overall, the book is a little to violent and falls too far into the "erotic grotesque" category.

5 out of 5 stars Later Language Development.......2006-09-03

Despite the recent interest and research in later language development, most textbooks on normal language development focus primarily on young children, thereby giving the impression that later language development is insignificant, particularily during adolescence. Vicki Rees (1986) targeted this problem, saying "there is no cohesive, integrated body of knowledge regarding normal language development during adolescence" (p.229). The basic purpose of this book is to fill that void. The book attempts to describe what is known about later language development and to point out what is not known, thereby providing direction for future research on this topic. Normal development during the 9 through 19 age range is the focus. Chapters cover development of the lexicon, spoken and written syntax, reading and writing, verbal reasoning, figurative language, linguistic ambiguity, and pragmatics. The nature of literacy, cognition, and socialization are also covered because of their relevance to later language development.

During a break in the weather, they attempt a mad dash for the summit 4,000 feet above them. Twelve miles away, clinging to a vertical wall of ice, two experienced American climbers also see the break in the clouds as their chance to reach the summit of Thunder Mountain, the third highest in the Alaska Range. But, as every mountain guide preaches, good weather is the most dangerous: it always goes bad when you least expect it. And what neither climbing party knows is that two weather fronts are about to collide above their heads to create one of the most hellacious storms Alaska has ever seen.

Within twelve hours the three Englishmen are trapped at 19,000 feet on Denali in whiteout conditions, hypoxic and dehydrated, their radio frozen, while one of the Americans has narrowly escaped death in a fall and is now pinned to a narrow ledge, depending on his wounded partner to reach the help that will save his life. With this, the mountain foot- patrols and flight crews of the U.S. Air Force's 210th Pararescue Squadron are mobilized and "The Rescue Season" begins.

Because of their low profile, the Air Force's parajumpers, or PJs, are the Special Forces you've never heard of. Now their remarkable achievements are revealed for the first time in Bob Drury's thrilling account of one season in the life of Alaska's 210th Pararescue Squadron, the only PJ team in the world devoted to civilian rescues. The lives of countless men and women -- mountaineers trapped on the immense 20,320-feet Denali massif, fishermen adrift in the chaos of the Bering Strait, lost hunters wandering the endless tundra, and even Navy SEALs freezing to death on a glacier the size of Rhode Island -- are the responsibility of this uncommonly trained, close-knit unit of thirty citizen-soldiers.

A spot on the 210th is a coveted assignment, for PJs, like civilians, appreciate the lure of Alaska, a territory that defies overstatement. But they are also fluent with its risks. In 1991, veteran PJ Mike Wayt helped lower a trapped Korean mountaineer down one of Denali's sheer slopes above 14,000 feet. The climber lost both hands to frostbite; Mike Wayt nearly died, unintentionally setting a new standard for heroism for the squad. Now they must find five stranded climbers in the midst of a storm that threatens everyone on the mountain.

The Rescue Season is a true tale of the perilous beauty of nature and the rousing community of men who live in the grandest heroic tradition: they risk themselves in unimaginable ways on behalf of strangers.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good read!.......2005-05-05

I quite enjoyed reading this whole book. The information about parajumpers was mostly new to me & very interesting. The rescue stories were facinating. All these sorts of books put in some history, background of the area & people. Sometimes that stuff gets boring, but that wasn't the case in this one. The information about Alaska was so interesting I was wishing there was more, rather than skimming to get through it. I didn't give it 5 stars because of 2 complaints. One is that right in the middle of the last big story, he stops the story to give very long lists of all the gear in the headquarts. While the wide variety of gear might be of interest, the placement of it in the narrative was frustrating. The other thing was the author spent a lot of time helping us get to know the parajumpers, especially a few specific ones. Parts of the entire book were devoted to this. But in the final, climatic "big" rescue story, the none of these characters played any part. I found it odd that the story he picked to describe in the most detail didn't include the parajumpers who the book is mainly about. But that rescue was a great story as were all the other stories in the book & it's well worth reading. Impressive group of men!

                  5 out of 5 stars It's about time..........2001-11-05

PJs have been going through the pipeline, and more have tried, for years, and it's about time they were recognized for their hairy, heroic efforts that would leave most men dumbfounded with their pants wet. (I can only hope Mike's daughter inspires a sequel to this book!! You go girl.) Bob Drury really did justice to the work these men, and the others in the Forest Service, etc., put in every day, and the camaraderie that goes with risking their lives together.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book ever written.......2001-09-25

I read a lot of books covering a wide variety of topics. This book is so poorly written that I actually threw it in the trash after completing it so that no one would be tempted to pull it off the shelf and read it. I kept hoping that at some point the story would come together and I would be pleasantly suprised. The suprise was that it never got better from chapter 1 throught until the end.

                  4 out of 5 stars Mountain rescues.......2001-08-03

Great, easy reading, even for a female. Adventures about the rescue team (mostly former military) under horrible, inhumane conditions (ice, cold, storms, broken bones) in Alaska's mountains. Very dedicated, but fit pararescuers. Keeps you on the edge. Good present if you have a pilot in the family!

4 out of 5 stars Into (Very) Cold Air.......2001-05-09

"The Rescue Season" tells the courageous story of the rescue teams, primarilly the "PJs" of the U.S. Air Force, who ply their trade in Alaska, particularly in and around Denali National Park. Author Bob Drury recalls some harrowing tales of rescue and tragic death and portrays his protagonists as rugged heros who seem driven to do what they do by their own genetic makeup. Drury is a fine writer and his prose is eminently readable. He introduces the reader to plenty of interesting characters and locales.

That said, the book is also a bit disjointed. There is a main search and rescue story that is introduced in the beginning and which Drury returns to at times over the whole course of the book. Drury also tends to throw a lot of geography, geology, meterology and history lessons into the mix (at least once, I got the impression that he was showing off his knowledge). All of this is interesting, but gets in the way of his narrative. He also makes a couple of mistakes that I noticed, for example once referring to the "Seven Summits" as the "Seven Sisters." Ultimately, the book doesn't hold together as a story, like with "Into Thin Air." Instead, it is a collection of good stories that should be quite pleasing to anyone with an interest in the subject matter.

3 out of 5 stars Good Case Study of American Expansionist Cultural Policy Vis-A-Vis Media Technology. The Colonial Metaphor is a Stretch.......2006-04-03

In Coca-Colonization and the Cold War, Reinhold Wagnleitner traces the evolution of an American foreign policy of cultural imperialism and its success in post World War II Austria. This success is rooted in American influence on periodicals, radio, literature, education, drama, music, and film. The author contends that Europe and the United States should be part of the same political analytic and in important ways constitute a common cultural bloc. He sees World War I as a tipping point where the expansion of American exports into Europe is necessarily followed by American culture. The expansion of American media monopoly is closely tied to its rise as a global superpower. The text even suggests that some American cultural trends, like a belief in choice through consumerism and science as the engine of social progress, matured in Europe a generation before they matured in the United States.

Coca-Colonization can draw parallels with two books that proceeded it, John W. Dower's Embracing Defeat and Tom Engelhardt's The End of Victory Culture. Like Dower, Wagnleitner confronts American cultural expansion as a policy aim in the occupation of a war torn nation. He also documents the reification of American occupiers and their country of origin. Like Engelhardt, Wagnleitner weaves together political history and personal childhood experience in telling the story of the Cold War through American popular culture. Unlike Engelhardt, Wagnleitner is less interested in biography and more interested in policy and policy actors. Unlike both, Coca-Colonization emphasizes the technological infrastructure of media distribution as an adjunct to cultural policy.

After comprehensively making a case for the common yoke of America and Europe, Wagnletiner's "colonialism" comes off as a "civil-colonialism" at best. While he finds it ironic in chapter one that America was a European colony that became a cultural imperialist in Europe, he is not Frantz Fanon. The colonialism he refers to (from the seventeenth thru the twentieth centuries) is quite different than the colonialism which exploits political subjects and inscribes power in the psychology of inferiority and mutilated kinship ties. Wagnleitner's colonialism is not one of balls and chains but rather bread and circuses. Perhaps this is what is missing from Coca-Colonization. While it is impressive in relating European and American cultural history, and even more impressive in documenting the American cultural-industrial-policy complex, it speaks of American colonialism in Austria without speaking of being an exploited people. It is as though there was a wild party across the Atlantic which Austrian children suddenly found themselves immersed in and liking. Is this the same as the historical experience of American Indians or Australian Aboriginals who may have also found themselves drinking Coca-Cola?

If the author does not see this distinction in appropriating colonialism as a term, how can he animate it in his consideration of American foreign policy? It should be noted that as a translated work, this review treads one step removed from the project's indigenous nomenclature. The credibility of this engagement with debates in the translated language is constrained. Still, as Austrian children reveled alongside American children in rock-n-roll, blue jeans, anti-Vietnam sit-ins, movies, logos, new left counterculture and individual expression, Coca Colonization does a fabulous job at explaining this as a policy outcome. It just yearns for a comparison with other "colonial" experiences and in discussing American "colonization" of Austria, it does not question the meta-narrative of World War II American liberation with a ten-foot pole. It is also lacking in its consideration of race, gender, and class in the American cultural products which it documents.

4 out of 5 stars Great analysis, Interesting writing.......2000-04-10

Wagnleitner does a great job of taking the reader through Western Austria's change from an ex-Nazi state to a miniature US "wannabe." The author also discusses the discrepancy between the percieved American culture and actual American culture. He furthers the discussion by examining the role that cultural imperialism has played in the history of the world. Overall, it was a great look at an issue which remained a hot one in Europe for decades (and still is in France, of course).

                    Book Description

Seit vor 30 Jahren P.A.
