& 220 color photos & 7 x 9. Step-by-step instructions illustrated with color photos.& Full-scale pattern World champion Bob Guge applies his artistry to a perennial favorite, the northern cardinal, in the latest in Stackpole's Carving & Painting series. Guge is one of an elite few who revolutionized the craft in the late 1970s, and he remains a strong influence today. He is best known for his miniatures and songbirds: A carving of northern cardinals won him his fourth world championship in 1991. Here is a detailed guide to every step in the process, from sketching the pattern onto a block of tupelo gum to painting and finishing the completed bird. Every skill and step is documented with multiple photos and explicit captions. These books work! Even beginning carvers rave about their clarity and thoroughness. Also includes background information and photos of the live bird. Curtis Badger is author of Stackpole's Bird Carving Basics and Fish Carving Basics series, as well as the three previous books in the Carving & Painting series.

Helpful for carving any songbird........2007-05-07
I have never met Bob Guge but I have taken a woodcarving class taught by one of his students, Steve Schumacher in Nebraska. Steve taught us to carve meadowlarks using Guge's techniques. I entered mine in our county fair the following summer and won a first place blue ribbon. Then, just today at a woodcarving show in Sacramento I saw a meadowlark priced at $600 and it wasn't nearly as good as mine! (Okay, so maybe I'm just a wee bit prejudiced.) On the advice of my Nebraska teacher, I bought this book on how Bob Guge carves and paints a cardinal. Both my husband and I refer to it frequently because it covers basics that can we can also apply to birds other than cardinals. Guge's book covers painting in great detail, it shows how to prime your bird and then to use multiple layers of acrylic washes to build up your color. My husband got so interested in cardinals after reading this book that he has now carved two cardinals and has learned to make bird legs and feet rather than buying the pewter ones. This book is well worth your money!

Charis Wilson jump starts her recollection of her years with Edward Weston with a visit to Death Valley (where, as model and photographer, they made many of his most famous photographs) for the first time in nearly 50 years. From there she follows the flow of memory. Wilson was just 19 when she first met the 48-year-old photographer. Shortly after that first encounter, Weston jotted the following entry in one of his Daybooks: "I have not opened this book for almost 8 months--and with good reason; I have been too busy, busy living. I notice the last entry was 4-20. On 4-22 a new love came into my life, a most beautiful one, one which will, I believe, stand the test of time." Wilson remembers spotting a "short man in brown clothes" as she scanned a crowded room after a concert; he was Weston. Wilson soon became his model (she is the subject of more than half of his recorded nudes), then his lover, and ultimately his wife. Their relationship seemed to transcend that of artist and muse. The two worked alongside one another, she assisting him in the darkroom, he illustrating texts she wrote.
Wilson's memoir is filled with anecdotes about Weston's work methods and personal habits that his admirers will find delightful: Weston wore glasses to focus his shot, then yanked them off to view his subject so that each shot was achieved through a flurry of the glasses flying off and onto the photographer's face; he used a heavy tarp to transform the back of his Ford V-8 into a darkroom; he ambushed the sun, laying in the sand until it illuminated his subject just the way he desired; coated cats' whiskers with butter so they'd lick them, staying in one place long enough for him to take his shot; and had a penchant for foods that would revolt even the most iron stomached. These recollections combined with other details about their lives together, their friendships with Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Jack London and other luminaries and their work form a comprehensive if roseate view of Weston that is a substantial addition to what we know about the legendary photographer. --Jordana Moskowitz
Book Description
Charis Wilson was nineteen and Edward Weston forty-eight when they met in 1934, but the passionate and often misunderstood eleven-year relationship between the famous photographer and the intellectual beauty was a true partnership. Wilson became not only the subject of some of Weston's most famous photographs but also his wife, working partner, and author of several acclaimed books that are illustrated with his work.
Through Another Lens tells the story of the life they led on the Big Sur coast amid a particularly American (and peculiarly Western) brand of artistic ferment among such figures as Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Robinson Jeffers.
Customer Reviews:
Edward Weston through another set of eyes.......2002-08-19
Weston is my FAVORITE photographer of all times. I've read the daybooks (which are excellent) and own many Weston Books. While I'll not pretend Charis Wilson is a great writer (OK...it was "Co Written" by her)the book is a different prespective on a great photographer. Skip the "life and times of Charis" sections and you'll be privey to a personal side of Weston not often revealed in other writings.
A well-written, revealing rememberance........1999-02-01
Charis Wilson reveals some sides of Edward Weston not previously published, and corrects some missimpressions that have been published. She is an excellent writer. Readers should recall that this book is a rememberance, not a spicy revelation; with that in mind, they should enjoy it.
A snapshot into photography's greatest man-woman partnership.......1998-11-13
This biography is an expansive treatment of the brief insight offered by Charis Wilson in her remembrance in "Edward Weston Nudes" (an Aperture monograph). It describes the artistic partnership between one of the greatest photographers in history and his muse/model/wife/inspiration - also one of the greatest in history.
As both an amateur photographer and writer, I have learned much from both about making images and writing stories. There are many published books on Weston's photography; this book has everything that is missing - the half of the story that has been largely untold for half a century.
A marvelous book which introduces us to C. Wilson.......1998-09-23
Charis (Kar-is) Wilson was long the companion and lover of Edward Weston. She met him at an early age (19 or 20) when he was twice her age. She proved not only a love force in his life, but she wrote much of his captions for his photographs. She tells her story in a frank and honest manner with some bit of humor. We really find out who she was and what she thought about being with one of the world's greatest photographers at the time. The book reveals new information about Edward at the same time we are finding out about Charis. A very good read which flows easily. Makes everyone want to drop life's stress, grab camera and head for Pt. Lobos and the art community of Carmel, CA

Book Description
Nicole is 2 years old, and her family, after months of worrying, has just learned she has mental retardation. In a fast-paced, engaging story, mother Sandra Kaufman frankly reveals the feelings of denial, guilt, frustration, and eventual acceptance that result in a determination to help her child live an independent life. This edition, revised on the 10th anniversary of the book's original publication, adds a "progress report" that updates readers on Nicole's adult years and reflects on the revolutionary changes in society's attitudes toward people with disabilities since Nicole's birth. Retarded Isn't Stupid, Mom! remains a celebration of all that a child can grow to be.
Customer Reviews:
I gave this book to my mom . . . .......2005-10-30
and she said, "Yes, it is!"
We had a pretty great laugh thinking about our lives and everything in regards to this book. Great read!!!
offering hope.......2001-08-16
I found this book very encouraging. The book covers the emotional roller coaster of dealing with a mentally challenged child but also offers hope. I felt encouraged that my child might have a fulfilling life but discouraged by all the challenges that the future might bring. This book gives a look at the life and successes of a mentally retarded young women.
Hilarious, hilarious.......1998-12-22
One of the funniest books I've read in a while-- reading of Nicole's wacky exploits is sure to tickle your funny bone!

Book Description
The island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll was defended by the elite troops of the Special Naval Landing Force, whose commander, Admiral Shibasaki, boasted that "the Americans could not take Tarawa with a million men in a hundred years". In a pioneering amphibious invasion, the Marines of the 2nd Division set out to prove him wrong, overcoming serious planning errors to fight a 76-hour battle of unprecedented savagery. The cost would be more than 3000 Marine casualties at the hands of a garrison of some 3700. The lessons learned would dispel forever any illusions that Americans had about the fighting quality of the Japanese.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-06-03
I found this book very informative of a battle I did not know much about. The photos, maps and illustrations were wonderful as I got to understand this battle. It was a very costly battle for the Marines as they took this island with over 3,000 casualties against 5,000 defenders. It also showed what was about to happen later in the war as the Japanese got more fanatical and used "banzai" charges against the Marines. A very informative book.
Expensive Victory!.......2005-08-10
As I say in my Amazon's Profile: "I am a science fiction fan and a history buff (especially WW II, Napoleon, Civil War, Ancient Rome), I read omnivorously on these subjects."
Osprey's different collections are a great resource for History "aficionados". In a very compact book series with excellent presentation, first quality paper and nice reproductions gives the reader a succinct and complete view of the subject.
Mr. Derrick Wright starts with a synopsis of the events preceding war's break out and then he follows with opposing Commanders, Armies and Plans in roughly 20 pages.
Next a compact but detailed day-by-day chronicle ensues.
Here the author sagely intercalates personal recounts with cold description of the battle in progress.
The photographic material is outstanding; each photo shows the shocking reality of the battlefield. The color plates are realistic and painted with vivid tonalities.
There are two and three dimension maps, showing very clearly how the combat evolved.
Finally a brief section is dedicated to the four Medal of Honor winners.
The appendix showing the casualties suffered by both sides is appalling and the 97% of dead Japanese military will prove the rule and not the exception all along the Pacific Campaign.
The only weak point of the book is the almost inexistent description of the Makin landings.
This book may suites as an introduction for neophytes or as a graphic resume for students and researchers.
Reviewed by Max Yofre.
Misnamed but Good Read.......2002-07-28
Tarawa 1943: The Turning of the Tide is a well written, but short history of the invasion of the island. It is misnamed, since the author himself correctly describes Midway as the turning point. But that aside, this is a good book.
In fact Tarawa is a perfect battle for the Osprey series since the battle was basically fought over a three day period. The book does an excellent job describing not only the troop movements but the human toll that the invasion caused. One is continually reminded that the conquest of Tarawa was paid for in too much human blood.
This is a good read. Excellent maps are an added bonus.
A Useful Summary of the Marine Corps Epic.......2001-01-12
British amateur historian Derrick Wright has written a thorough summary of the US Marine Corps landing on Tarawa Atoll in November 1943. The subtitle, "the turning of the tide" is not appropriate however, since the tide of victory had already turned against the Japanese a year earlier at Midway and Guadalcanal.
The author covers the battle in succinct but thorough day-by-day detail, from the marine landing to the conquest of the island three days later. There are three appendices covering US and Japanese orders of battle and USMC casualties. The three-D maps are good, but propably should have been zoomed in a bit more, since the area of fighting was quite small.
There are no major flaws in the book, which does cover well-travelled ground after all, but there are several areas that could have been given better elaboration. First, since this was the first major opposed landing for the US Marine Corps in the Second World War, a bit more space should have been given to amphibious doctrine. Was the landing conducted in accord with existing doctrine and how was doctrine modified? Second, the US Army landings on Makin should have been given a map and a little more detail.
Otherwise, this is another useful, if not ground-breaking, Osprey Campaign summary. The photographs are quite good also.

Book Description
The process of formulating pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, speciality chemicals or any of the other many formulated products is a highly formulated task. Intelligent software tools are a means of capturing this knowledge to enable all users to benefit from expert advice, as well as providing the means for more consistent decision making. The implementation of intelligent software can also lead to significant improvements in knowledge protection, cost reduction, training consistency and improved communication. Many applications ranging from agrochemicals and aluminium alloys to pharmaceuticals and textile finishing are reviewed.; This is an account of the applicability of expert systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms and other intelligent software in product formulation, which includes an explanation of the technology involved and examples of two commerical software packages specifically developed for product formulation.
