Book Description
Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.-Ben FranklinThe brewing industry has been an integral part of the American fabric from the very beginning. In fact, a brewery was one of the first structures built by early colonists. Because beer was safer to drink than water (having been boiled), it was the drink of choice for all age groups, from breakfast to bedtime. After the young nation won its independence, George Washington declared his support of the beer industry by stating he would henceforth drink only porters brewed in America. This lavishly designed history tells the story of American brewing through wars, tax hikes, Prohibition, consolidation, depression, recession, and the microbrewery boom that revived the industry beginning in the late 1980s. Archival and modern imagery and photographs depict buildings inside and out, workers, the production process, and equipment. In addition, sidebars feature memorabilia, home brewing, and famous recipes from the pilgrims to present. Readers will witness how breweries flourished and suffered like any other American houses of manufacture, from a peak of 4,131 breweries in 1873 to an industry low of 80 in 1983.

A must have..........2003-04-23
I was truly impressed with this book. The illustrations, step by step instructions and "trade secret" sections of this book make this a "unique must have" no matter what your level of expertise. You can definitely obtain some great ideas to go to that next level. Hats off to the authors !!
great ideas and tips, easy to follow instructions.......2003-04-16
I like this book. The instructions are well written, easy to follow, and well illustrated. Lots of good ideas for the beginner wishing to learn, as well as some more complicated work for others. Lots of patterns to use. Beautifully photographed and designed.
A very average book.......2003-03-22
This book was a let down for me. I was looking for new ideas and inspiration. This contains the same old schlock. If you are looking for boring basics, it is a fine guide. Beyond that, don't bother.

John Burder explains how.......2000-08-12
When I was doing an internship at the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts & Sciences in Beverly Hills I felt completely lost the first week because I didn't have a clue what people were talking about when they refered to checkerboard cutting, A- Winds,B-Winds, Internegatives, Reversal Dupe Negatives etc. All of this "hardcore" filmterminology didn't make a whole lot of sense to me...unitl I discovered Burder's book on 16mm film cutting which really goes into detail and explains the facts of more than just cutting films. His book got me hooked on making films and the art of cinematography and I am even considering it as a career now. Now I can actually watch the credits at the end of my most favorite movies and understand them.

Book Description
Joseph Johnson (1738-1809) was arguably the foremost bookseller of the late 18th century in England, publishing Joseph Priestley, William Cowper, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Mary Wollstonecroft, Wordsworth and Coleridge, among others, and his output closely linked to the turbulent events of his age. This book seeks to reassess the reputation of a man unfairly condemned in his own time as a dangerously 'radical' publisher and how far the works he published tended to promote the case for religious and political reform.

A Wonderful Journey Down Memory Lane and Beyond, with Mama.......2003-10-05
What a really wonderful book. I, myself, am not much of a reader, but I came across this book kind of by happenstance today, straight out the hands of Sara W. Manis, on a trip with my own children, in hopes of making one of those heartfelt memories with my own kids. I began reading this book on the journey back home from our outing, and I absolutely could not stop reading it ( that was until it got so dark in the car), but once home, I picked it right back up and didn't put it down,(except to run to the bathroom to get some tissue paper for the tears streaming down my face and of course to wipe my now runny nose). The book takes you places with Sara and her savy conscious mother, down a road in the past, and in the mind of the aurthor. Lessons learned along the path, paved the road to the future, and lets us know who we are and exactly how we got there, (nine times out of ten, with the ending words of a mother,.... "I TOLD YOU SO".) The book is so much more that just memories of travling, but of an empathic caring soul who loves to live life to the fullest and teaches others that living means learning to enjoy the simpliest of lifes precious gifts, and for the most part... free for the taking. This is a must read book for all, especially daughters, who have that special mother/daughter bond, even if time or circumstances have tugged at the seams alittle. No matter the situation, this book will bring the closeness back, even if its in your own heart now. The hardest thing is admitting your wrong in your beliefs and standards that you set for yourself, but like Sara said,it's a hard lesson:"convictions sometimes lose their firmness, their strength blurred by reality, when they strike us where we are most vulnerable, and that to me is in the heart and soul.

not very good.......2004-07-19
It's probably a good tip to never use a cookbook by someone who doesn't know that a potato is a vegetable......otherwise, not the best of food.
Excellent Food.......2004-01-21
I had the good fortune of being the author's housemate for a number of years, and enjoying her cooking. Her Sri Lankan recipes produce wonderful results. She even taught me (confirmed bachelor who hadn't yet learned to cook) a few recipes, so I can tell you she's very good at step-by-step instruction as well.
A great place to begin..........2004-01-16
This book is a great place to begin for those of us who are not familiar with Sri Lankan food. The introduction explains the basics and the recipes are clear, and if all else fails there is a link to the authors web page for questions.
Sri Lankan Home Cooking.......2004-01-13
I love this pretty little cookbook. It has tasty recipes that are mostly easy to prepare, with a finite number of ingredients that are easy to keep on hand, so it's more home cooking than elaborate restaurant fare. This is a sort of exotic food that you can get to know while having a busy life. And the book tells you a lot about Sri Lankan ingredients, food preparation and the role of these foods in home life. It's very new but already one of my favorite cookbooks.
Exotic Food.......2004-01-13
I love this cookbook. The food is tasty and easy to make. The cover is beautiful and the comments by the author are interesting.

Captivating.......2004-12-07
As a student of Jim, I am proud to have read his book. Throughly and completely, it touches the heart of the reader in bits and pieces that are small enough to reach those inner-most parts of us that haven't ever been touched before.
The flow progresses so nicely that the reader truely has the ability to keep up stride for stride as the description and dialogue set the atmosphere.
"Shadow People" Just a two word phrase, carefully placed, can have an outstanding impact oh a person's psyche. This book is full of them from beginning to end. The craft of visualization through similies without over emphasizing an exact direction towards the reader gives way for room of ones own interpretation(s).
Definetly worth sitting down with this book, but beware; If you pick it up you may not want to put it down.
A surprising love story.......2003-02-23
I picked this book in my search for Peace Corps memoirs (I leave in July). And like the best of those memoirs, "Serendib" is about much, much more. It is a wonderful, unexpected love story.
A must read for students as well as others.......2002-05-21
This story of an amazing adventure through life brings laughter and tears to one's eyes. Jim Toner has found a way to spark my interest in more world travel through eye opening details and incredible character descriptions. I will look for another piece of his writting in the future.
P.S. Jimmy, thank you for a wonderful semester of writting, thinking, and creating.
a student from Jamestown.......2001-11-17
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It covered so many different feelings in life. I was especially drawn to the moments of discovery with his father. To be in your 40's and to be experiencing your very first journey with your own father is at first a shame that it didn't come sooner and a blessing that it finally did. Learning to know and appreciate your parents as adults is a remarkable thing. Hearing them tell stories that you never heard before, enjoying bits of everyday life with them, watching their eyes sparkle when a chance to play arises--those are all gifts. Thank you, Jim Toner, for introducing me to Sri-Lanka (teka-teka) and for allowing me a moment to know the child in you. I'm blessed to have been able to read your book.
Not an accurate representation.......2001-11-13
As a Sri Lankan, I am thoroughly upset at the fallacies present in the book. Mr.Toner, has unfairly characterized Sri Lanka as a nation that has no infrastructure, no medicine, extremely disorganized with a dirt poor society. Living in a country for 2 years as a peace corps volunteer gives no insight to the complex social issues or the intricate details of the civil war in northern Sri Lanka, let alone writing a book.
Sri Lanka is a developing nation that has a 90% literacy rate, excellent educational facilities and a state sponsored health care system which is excellent. The regular problems plaguing developing nations is present in Sri Lanka but nowhere to the extent the author has made it out to be. The capital Colombo is a modern city comparable to other modern cities in the world. The author makes no reference to that, but goes on talking about how treacherous living in Sri Lanka is. He also goes on to talk about how an Air Lanka aircraft on which his father was a passenger had to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia due to a bomb threat, and after the emergency evacuation his father runs off into the Sahara!!! The Sahara desert as we all know is in North Africa and not in the Arabian Penninsula. Mr.Toner is a typical first time traveller who goes on to a distant land to "teach" the natives about the great "American culture" as he puts it and decides to write a book about it. Mr.Toner's father who at 70 something years is travelling out of the USA for the first time in his life talks about how hot and humid Sri Lanka is. He obviously has not visited Texas, Arizona, New Mexico or Florida in his lifetime. This books depicts Sri Lanka as a war-torn nation akin to Rwanda or DR of Congo, when in actuality Sri Lanka is a modern nation with a civil war confined to the north and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

worth reading, but short on objectivity.......2004-01-06
Oversimplified and relentlessly negative. Filled with sweeping negative generalizations that ignore abundant evidence of positive characteristics of the Third Reich personalities. The caricatures painted of the key figures in the Third Reich are laughably unrealistic. As a serious history reference, this is a terrible book. It is so bad that it's actually worth reading: its sheer awfulness makes it a great example of how NOT to write a serious non-fiction book.
Blitz biographies and absence of explanations.......2003-02-09
What you get in this book is pretty much what the title promises you. The author (J.Fest) plunges into a psycho-social analysis of the Nazi elite and attempts (succesufully) to shed some light on the people who moved the strings of Nazism in Germany.
Admittedly, the author's heavy writting style will turn off a certain group of viewers. While his intentions on decoding the personas that played key roles of Nazism are honest and straightforward, the atmosphere of the book is rather characterised by abusing descriptions and verbal exagerations.
Short biographies and psychological profiles are on offer here: Hitler, Goering, Hoess, Himmler, Hess, Ribbentrop, to name but a few.
However, you'd be mistaken (in my view anyway) to assume that this book will help you understand what brought this fascistic movement to power. Before even deciding whether you should read this or not, start by reading "The rise and fall of the third Reich" or other books pertaining on fascism and the masses. What is absent here are the german people themselves. Fascism does not rise because of a few psychotic personalities , and, as was proven in Germany's example, it very often complicits the people themselves to grab the power mechanisms.
But, if you are interested in blitz-biographies, and short "explanations" then the "Face of the third reich" will be a good choice. Then again, when it comes to the major players of Nazism there are far better individual biographies and character accounts out there (one of them by the author himself on Hitler).
Marred by errors and too dry.......2000-08-08
This book was poorly translated and even in the original German, Fest is a heavy writer, turgid and hardly scintillating. This compilation is laden with errors, some major, some not, but the ultimate effect compromises the integrity of this book. It's absurd, for example, to make the statement that Hermann Goering's Nuremberg defense was anything but brilliant. One can loathe what Goering stood for and decry Nazism and its atrocities, but to deny that Goering stole the show at Nuremberg is historically inaccurate.
There are many better summations of the Nazi leadership than here. This is as dry as timber and about as edifying.
Well-rounded summary of the key players in the Third Reich.......1999-03-05
Fest provides the reader with a well-written summary of the high-ranking and crucial members of Nazi Germany. This book is a good background for the general reader on the Third Reich and is an essential first-step in any investigation into the period.

Book Description
Focusing on the period 1600-1900, this ground-breaking work presents Korean history as a tension between structures and agents. It examines economy, demography, and mentalities and focuses on Korean and Japanese attitudes towards each other forged at their point of contact on the frontier. The book argues that frontier contact in the pre-modern world was at least as important for the formation of cultural perceptions and historical memory as the writings of intellectuals far away in national centres. It raises questions about pre-modern self-perceptions and the processes by which perceptions were formed of other peoples. It also links local history with transnational relations and presents East Asian pre-modern history in a completely new light.
