5 out of 5 stars An absolute must if you love architecture and Charleston........1997-12-12

Mr. Poston has done an excellent and exhaustive job with this book. To my knowledge it is the most comprehensive compilation to date. As well as photographs of the houses plans are also shown for many. A 9+ only because I'm reluctant to say that the "perfect" book has ever been published.

5 out of 5 stars Big Brush Watercolor by Ron Ranson.......2003-01-19

Another book by a modern master, Ron should've called this the "Technique Bible". He keeps no secrets, and shares all knowledge in a very informal and down-to-earth style. Opening one of his books is like greeting an old, dear friend, and this one's no exception.

He details everything, from his choice of a few brushes to what to do with them. Everything for a beginning watercolorist is here, and a few tricks for the intermediate to advanced, also.

A well-written and well-illustrated book.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......1999-09-09

This is that kind of books where you will find the same things you can find in a lot of painting books. How to mix the colours, the paper categories. I thin is a waste of time, and of course of money.

4 out of 5 stars The best of Ranson's how-to books.......1999-06-07

I've had a hardback copy of this book since it came out in 1989 in the UK and have used it a lot. It has a chatty, down-to-earth style, but also contains lots of very basic, useful hints for beginning watercolorists. Even if you don't want to use the hake brush he recommends, you can still learn lots and loosen up your style. One of my favorite books, if not my favorite artist!

4 out of 5 stars Joyfully direct, Ron Ranson has what the beginner needs........1998-06-20

This book delivers the skinny on fast and loose watercolor painting. Ron's fun and direct manner evokes a much needed direction for the beginning and intermediate artist. I particularly enjoy his taste of subject matter and mode of application.

5 out of 5 stars This book enables anyone on earth to paint watercolor........1997-12-14

A word to the wise is sufficient. That's why you don't need those small brushes to express those details in your painting. Paint freely and spiritfully with Ron Ranson is one thing a painter should try. A very good book for innovative painters.

        Book Description

Patrick Kane is a man haunted by his past. Bobby Redhead, a woman who stumbles into the path of his car, is a mysterious part of that past. They have come together at an archaeological dig in the village of Wytchlow.

What has Patrick done that he cannot forgive? Why is Bobby so drawn to him? And how are they connected by the local folksong of a Saxon girl called the German Queen? To learn the answers, they must race to save the German Queen's long-buried secret before a developer can claim the land.

Here, in a small English village where history is as alive as the nearest plowed field, three people — one dead a thousand years but still very much alive — meet on an unforgettably touching adventure through time that will lead to the very depths of the human heart.... Can the fragile bones of a royal matriarch heal the hearts of those who would dare free her?

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Archeology Information Weaved Into Novel.......2002-07-27

I thought this book was fascinating for several reasons. The main character is a reformed rock and roll star who blames himself for a loss from which he still suffers. He has returned to his previous profession, that of an archeologist, and is asked to do a dig that turns out to be more than what he bargained for. There is a wonderful yet painful love affair that develops from this dig along with wonderful tidbits about a time long past. I highly recommend this book.

        5 out of 5 stars A great snowbound book.......2002-01-06

Picked it up at a local bookstore just in time to get snowed in for a couple days. Great fireplace/hot chocolate read. While there is a romantic current running through out the book, it is not what I would call a romance. Therefore I think it will appeal to anyone looking for historical fiction. The song of the German Queen is fantastic. The history and bits about archaeology make this more than mindless entertainment, but not so dry that the average reader won't enjoy it. A great read. I'm here at Amazon looking for other books by the same author

        5 out of 5 stars A special romantic drama.......2001-02-19

Before the modern developers bulldoze the area, a team assembles to insure no ancient relics are buried under the earth near the English village of Wytchlow. Heading up the archeological dig is Patrick Kane a brilliant individual haunted by personal ghosts buried in a Welsh graveyard. The rest of his team is very diversified, but each one carries their peculiar baggage. Of particular interest to Patrick is local villager Bobby Redhead, who looks like a thirty-something version of his beloved Rachel, that is if the latter had lived another decade rather than died at nineteen.

The dig centers on Roman ruins, but Patrick finds the Saxon legend of the "German Queen" more interesting. Meanwhile Bobby is attracted to the dig's leader. She focuses her attentions on Patrick who retreats within his shell every time she boldly steps towards him. As they get closer to finding the lost Saxon treasure, Patrick knows he found his own valuable treasure if he can move past his own tragic past and reach out for her.

SILENCE AND SHADOWS is an interesting romantic tale that blends legends and archeology into a fantastic love story. The tale never misses a beat as readers come to know the key players including several secondary cast members like Bobby's brother, several other villagers, and a land developer, etc. The lead couple adds to the legends as both differently struggle with their pasts seeking each other for the future. James Long has written a rich tale that will bring him many accolades from fans and critics.

          'Til death do us part...

Nicky Fairchild had backpacked her way to Venice hoping to find sunshine and warmth. Instead, she'd nearly died of pneumonia, then been swept off her feet by Dr. Carlo Santini, the sensuously brooding widower who'd saved her life.

She'd fallen immediately in love with him. There could be no other explanation for agreeing to marry a man she barely knew. And all too soon she became Signora Nicolina Santini, with a fashionable new hairstyle, a flashy new wardrobe and a husband who made her feel uneasy, almost fearul at times -- a husband whose friends looked shocked when they met her. Was this destined to be a marriage made in heaven -- or hell?

A long-time contributor to the Gallery Girls series for SQP, international illustrator Boada (pronounced BWA-duh) has been gearing up for his own collection of fantasy work for this book. Having created HUNDREDS of paintings for paperback covers, he has mastered every genre of fiction - from Western to SF, and all points in-between. You'll be amazed and awestruck at this overview of a true master of illustration.

5 out of 5 stars YET ANOTHER TALENT FROM SPAIN.......2005-11-21

As a contemporary of fellow Spanish-born artists Sanjulian and Esteban Maroto, one can certainly see the similarities in style when looking at the work of Boada. But as noted in the introduction to this collection, in Europe Boada is well renowned for his romantic, yet classic paintings of the female form.. A visit to his website will be proof enough of his enormous talent. But it's his over 2000 book cover illustrations that he his perhaps most well-known for in America, capturing a look and feel of old pulp magazines. Boada also produced many covers for 70's horror mags such as Skywald's Psycho and Nightmare.

This collection from SQ Productions provides a sampling of Boada's work, much in the same vein as their Sanjulian collection. Boada's style, at least in these illustrations is somewhat grittier than Sanjulian's, making it a perfect fit for many of the hard-boiled crime and detective pieces displayed in the book. But Boada does love the female form and his beautiful women are on wonderful display here in a series of themed sections. The "Best of the Wild West" features Winchester toting saloon gals in lingerie just daring any cowboy to look at her wrong. Page 18 features a buxom nude on hands and knees in the ocean surf, apparently oblivious to the gun battle taking place in the background.

The largest section shows off Boada's horror illustrations that combine the Boada woman in archetypal gothic settings. In one piece Fritz, the hunchbacked assistant from "Frankenstein" prods a captive female with a torch, much the way he tormented the monster in the original 1931 classic film. Pages 38 and 39 are covers that are taken right out of the 70's era with their decrepit undead attacking damsels who have strayed into the wrong cemeteries. Page 43 features a topless woman, bound tightly in chains as two cobras menace her. Simply marvelous and evocative illustrations!

Perhaps my favorite piece in the entire book is the illustration on page 61 depicting a topless jungle maiden with her arm on the back of her pet...a massive gorilla! Even Charo, the 70's coochie-coochie girl finds her way into the book as Boada illustrates the Spanish singing star in a tight dress that laces up the front with her full breasts spilling out over the top. Just dazzling! A great collection!

                          Book Description

If the nuclear balance of terror helped maintain the 'long peace' between the united States and the Soviet Union during the Cold Ware, will the spread of nuclear weapons to new states also help stabilize international relations in the future? In this increasingly complex world, how do issues such as global terrorism, missile defense, and the Indian-Pakistani conflict factor into the decisions states make about nuclear weapons?

In The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: A Debate Renewed, two major international relations scholars resume their well-known dialogue about these important questions, as well as others. Kenneth Waltz, the dean of realist theory in international relations, expands on his argument that "more may be better," contending that new nuclear states will use their acquired nuclear capabilities to deter threats and preserve peace. Scott Sagan, the leading proponent of organizational theories in international politics, continues to make the counterpoint that "more will be worse": novice nuclear states lack adequate organizational controls over their new weapons, which makes for a high risk of either deliberate of accidental nuclear war.

The global community has long been fascinated by—as well as terrified of—nuclear weapons. This short and engaging book is required reading for citizens and statesmen, as well as scholars and students.

Certainly the best debate ever produced about the existence of nuclear weapons and its distribution around the world. Highly recomended!

5 out of 5 stars Simple debate, tremendous consequences.......2003-02-17

This books puts together two colliding authors on whether the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a good idea or not. Waltz, one fo the premier figures of realpolitik, argues (brilliantly, even though I disagree with him) that proliferation is a good idea. Sagan argues there are too many organizational risks in the proliferation system.

The two present their arguments, and then respond to each other's argument. It is a fascinating argument, one that can be discussed in 1000 pages, but the authors do a tremendous job of synthesizing it and pointing out the major strenghts and weaknesses of each other's argument. In today's world, where we are willing to go to war to prevent proliferation, it is useful to take a step back and really understand what the main problems arising by proliferation are.

Is nuclear proliferation good? Does it increase stability? Or is it unstable, either because of accidents or misuse? Scott Sagan and Kenneth Waltz play out this debate in this book that looks at the nuclear question through organisational and realist perspectives. If you thought the answer to this debate was obvious, think again - this book will certainly leave you with a lot of questions.

                                Book Description

The World Bank has gained significant experience and has an important role to play in supporting innovation systems projects (successful programs included Korea, India, Indonesia, Turkey). The Bank's role typically has been to facilitate and augment reform efforts through its experiences around the world and play the role of an "honest broker" between the productive and S&T sectors and facilitating the reform process by bringing together relevant partners. This enhances the effectiveness of the design and delivery of services and the sustainability of these activities. The Bank's involvement also encourages that difficult measures are taken, including the raising of institutional accountability. Prudent market tests are applied to the various available interventions and fiscal discipline is imposed on institutions that are in the process of restructuring. Drawing on its experience the Bank can provide the long-term support, advice, and leverage needed during the restructuring phase for institutions that seek to attain greater fiscal independence and to enhance the quality of their services and their contribution to the national economy.

This paper concentrates on innovation systems support projects financed by the Bank during 1990-2003, together with a few successful earlier examples, and reviews some 51 projects involving over US$4.2 billion in Bank support.
