Book Description
This is the only publication that presents a modern interpretation of the Classical Orders. The new edition of this successful title now includes the proportions in both metric and imperial measurements to make the orders more accessible and to provide a valuable reference for designers.
The inclusion of both 100-part and 96-part systems of proportion is underpinned by an essay on James Gibbs - one of the 18th century authors of standardized proportioning systems - and his influence in America. Along with additional plates, this book gives a
clear introduction to those not familiar with the classical genre and is an easy to follow guide which assists architects, interior designers and conservators with the quality of their design.
1. The only detailed contemporary guide to the classical orders available
2. Presents the proportioning system in both metric and imperial for ease of understanding
3. An easily accessible introduction to the subject
Customer Reviews:
The book title says it all..........2000-01-07
An excellent source of information - in richly illustrated detail - of the Greek and Roman orders of architecture, including not just the columns, plinth and pediments, but complete building facades, plans and how the porportions of the order relate to these elements as well. In addition, the author includes examples by famous architects or of famous buildings showing how the order was interpreted in the past. The only omission - an intentional one, I am sure - is that orders of other cultures were not included.
GET IT BACK IN PRINT!!!.......1998-04-01
Whatever your view as an Architect, Classical Architecture is still around, and being built. With fewer Architects being knowledgeable of the orders of architecture, this book provides the essential information needed to provide an understanding of Classical Architecture. This book is not just a plate by plate description of built or unbuilt classical architecture, but a raw, down to the bone instruction manual of how to construct in minutest detail the five orders. WHEN it is back in print, this book will be an essential purchase for Architects and Offices alike. With very few Architects now having an understanding of Classical Architecture, you could be at an advantage. I would also suggest that when you get a copy, to actually draw the orders...its well worth it.

A Series of Beautiful Interviews.......2004-05-11
This fascinating book is a compendium of 44 separate interviews, edited down to an easily readable length. All the interviews were taken in the early 1990's, and with two or three exceptions, long after the photographers left Life magazine. I cannot even call myself an amateur photographer; I could not identify any of the people interviewed; yet the interviews were immensely interesting for me.
Mr. Loengard starts with a handful of stock questions and from this beginning, each interview takes its own direction. Putting all the interviews one after the other allows the reader to compare and contrast the different people, and at the same time each person retains a solid individual identity. What makes this book so fascinating is how the vivid details build into a story greater than the sum of their details. From the stock questions about their style, their thoughts on photography as art, how they got into photography, and their strengths, passions, & challenges, and who they disliked, were friends with, or inspired by and why, each interview then delves into each photographer's unique perspective and opinions. The interviews go much beyond photography, the Life photographers talk about their lives, and what went on behind the pictures.
This is definitely not a picture book! I estimate that 25% of the book is pictures and the rest is the text of the interviews. The questions are short (Mr. Loengard is not grand-standing here) and the answers are long. It is clear that each interviewee has wide latitude to go where they think it is most interesting, this is what ensures that each photographer maintains their own unique identity. When we stumble across something valuable, a short question asks for more. The only major detraction for me was that sometimes an important photograph that they are discussing is not reproduced. There was never any reason given for this, leaving me to guess if the original was lost, they didn't have the rights, or for some reason not clear, it just wasn't important enough.
A Unique Perspective on History.......2003-03-24
Wonderfully written and illustrated. These interviews provide personal narratives from the photographers who brought us the images recording our history. While the photograph is a moment in time, these interviews tell the stories that preceeded the camera click. The one-on-one relationship between the photographer and subject can be very intimate -- abstract historical figures become real when described in these pages.
A fine memoir of famous photo-journalists.......1998-09-16
***** This is a splendid book. John Loengard, himself a distinguished photo-essayist and picture editor , has presented in their own words the stories of many of the men and women who had served on the photographic staff during the years of publication of the influential. LIFE magazine. In the early nineties Loengard interviewed 44 of the total 88 staff members who had defined the profession of photo-journalist. And just in time! Since the video-taped conversations, one third of the subjects have followed their pioneering fellows in death. Most of the very earliest group are included in this sad roster, including Alfred Eisenstadt, Peter Stackpole, Hansel Mieth, and Horace Bristol. In this handsomely produced volume these noted photographers, along with many of their less well-known colleagues, recount their experiences in the momentous years since LIFE¹s first issue in October 1936. The book is well illustrated with photographs of and by these talented people. It will be especially appreciated by readers with an interest in photography but will also fascinate ordinary observers of the exciting times of our century, as they were recorded by this very perceptive group.

The one and only of its kind!.......2002-01-11
Weird but true is a great book, and yeah it is very cheap although I had to pay more I got it in a book store. This books gives you many cool pictures and facts that you don't know about cartoons. They give you quickies, there are no full articles in this book, just quick facts maybe a sentence or two. Heres one, did you know KISS had blood take from them to mix into their comic book? Heres an amazing fact I liked, fulfilling marvel comics write Mark Gruenwald's dying wish, the ashes of his cremated corpse were mixed into the ink used to print the Squadron Supreme comic book ! Talk about ghost writers! This is a cool book and fun to read for an hour. But there are no colored pictures in this book, everything is black and white, I wouldn't suggest giving this to a kid either it's not suitable for a child!
A MUST FOR ANY CARTOON FAN!!!.......1999-07-04
I loved this book and if you're any sort of a cartoon fan, so will you. It's one of the few books on animated cartoons and comics that I've seen that actually evokes the fun of the artform. Lots of great drawings (many unpublished and rare) and lots of totally useless cartoon trivia to amuse your friends. Plus, it's just so darn cheap. This book is hard to find in stores but I hope it's successful so we can see the second planned edition come to life.
I LOVED IT! I LOVED IT! I laughed as i learned!.......1999-06-03
zany, crazy , wacky, funny, surprising, sexy, educational, politically incorrect. and WEIRD!
Completely Entertaining- Better than Star Wars!!!.......1999-05-25
I've never seen such a thorough search of background information about cartoons and comix! This thoughtful and obviously painstaking task of compiling such detail is mindboggling. If you love toons, you can't miss this book! If you WANT to love toons, you should read this book! You won't be able to put it down. This collection of fun and weird factoids is a literary bag of potato chips.

Book Description
After Watergate: Nixon and the Newsweeklies, compares the coverage of Nixon in the three national newsweeklies, Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report, from his resignation from the presidency in August 1974 until his funeral in April 1994. This study examines the periodicals' treatment of Nixon, and finds that each of the three sources had more than 80 percent of neutral assertions during the 20-year period understudy.

An insightful and revealing look at a controversial figure.......2003-04-16
Definitely a book that I recommend to friends. If you are interested in the political process, Watergate, Nixon; or simply this tumultuous period in American history then this book is for you. And it's grammatically correct too. Rob--Fairhope, AL
Excellent Book! Masterfully written........2001-07-22
Russ Witcher's book, that Watergate thing, is one of the best books that I have ever read. The tension kept me on the edge of my seat! The climatic conclusion is unparalled by anything except for certain Betty Davis movies. Keep up the good work, Russ. I hope to see more work from you in the near future.
An Objective Look at Nixon.......2000-12-15
Even today, it's difficult to be objective about Richard Nixon. Author Russ Witcher succeeds, however, in his seminal study about how Nixon dealt with the press in the two decades following his resignation from the presidency. Relying on articles about Nixon in the three national newsweeklies during this period, Witcher presents a dispassionate look at how Nixon's image improved in the national print media. By quantifying the number of positive and negative statements the newsweeklies made about the former president, Witcher avoids the subjectivity that has marred much of the earlier research that has been done about Mr. Nixon.
Witcher's study is superb!.......2000-12-15
Russ Witcher's superb study of Richard Nixon's post-presidential rehabilitation in the media is long overdue. Many observers have said that Nixon was largely successful in improving his media image during the last 20 years of his life, but Witcher has the numbers to prove it. In an exhaustive look at every article written in Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report about Nixon from his resignation in 1974 until his death in 1994, Witcher finds that Nixon improved his image over time in all three of the newsweeklies. Such research is a testament to Nixon's perseverance to fight to be known as more than The Watergate Man. That fight found its ultimate culmination at Nixon's funeral when even President Clinton declared that the days of judging Nixon on anything less than his whole life and career were over.
Book Description
In Watchmen in the Night, Theodore Sorensen, lawyer and advisor to President John F. Kennedy, offers a comprehensive examination of Watergate and what Richard Nixon's reign and resignation mean to the American Presidency. Rejecting both the assertion that Nixon was a mere aberration and the assertion that Watergate was a culmination of what other Presidents had done, Sorenson sorts out what was new and different in Watergate, including some frank admissions about the Kennedy White House.
The Presidency as seen from the inside is not as powerful as it looks from the outside, he writes, commenting on the limitations imposed by the bureaucracy, the press, the Congress, and the courts. Sorensen, while acknowledging a change in perspective since his White House days, still favors a strong Presidency and in fact believes it should be stronger on economic matters. Nevertheless, he feels too strongly about Vietnam and Watergate to defend the status quo, and insists on specific steps to implement "accountability." He deflates the mystique of the Presidency, urges reform in our selection of Presidents, and suggests specific clues for which to look in predicting presidential megalomania. His comparison of the Nixon and Kennedy staffs is particularly insightful.
All of this is illustrated with examples of good and bad uses of presidential power. Watchmen in the Night gives the reader an extraordinary sense of how the White House is run and how it should be run.

Next To Dr. Spock ..THE Priceless Book When Raising Children.......2006-06-30
This book was a gift to us when our children were young from my sister in law and it has helped us through the passages of our children's developing consciousness' really like the friend we wish we had. Because the book is so dense and so articulate writing a review is rather difficult. But I will attempt to try to find a way to give a few insights. The first thing I read from the book was shortly after my daughter was two months and it was a part found under the heading , "The Ductless Glands and the Cosmic Thought Field". In the section which includes an Alan Watts quote came a rather wonderful discussion of innocence. And awareness. My next foray was about how we pass on our fears to children. I had a multitude of fears so this helped. Great Phillip Larkin poem to assist with that. Time, Adulthood, Talk in Childhood, what children do in play, love, senses, emotional development and so much more are delved into with such depth and through such eclectic connection. It's as if everything I ever wanted to put togetherthat I knew about childhood and children intuitively was put together and came out as this work of real genius. Some people could not accept this book as a treasure. It would be too much for them. If you look for an ABC cookbook rearing type book or to be reinforcing or sticking with your nap schedule this book is really not for you. In fact it will create a schism and end up propelling you further from understanding what it is to raise a child and find meaning in the process. I think if you are poetic, open and inclined to hear Joni Mitchell sing , "Yesterday a child came out to wonder. Caught a dragon fly inside a jar...." and cry with the profundity of how her lyric addressed childhood then this book is what you need to raise your child. If you work with children as a teacher, therapist, psychiatrist, then it is invaluable again if you pass the litmus test of being aware of how nice a soft hand feels against your face as the child considers who you are.
This book changed my life.......1999-02-07
I wish someone would re-publish this book. It was written way before its time - now is its time and it cannot be found anywhere. It contains more simple, heartful wisdom than any modern child care book - with games, ideas and feelings that need to be taken in by every parent.
Incredible Journey Into the Realms of Parenthood.......1997-08-05
To love a child isn't about changing them, it's about changing you.
They can lead us back to remembering, if only our eyes are open to see the path.
By choosing to write this book from an open heart, the author gives us a glimpse
of tomorrow, in the present. If you are going to have a child, or have had a child,
this book is invaluable.
Not to mention, Amazon Books was the only place we were able
to find any copies. After doing book searches, writing the publishers, calling every
bookstore in the area, Amazon came through. This piece of information doesn't just
speak highly of the book, but also of the company providing this book.

Book Description
The past twenty years have witnessed tremendous developments in regard to the academic study of the experience of Irish migrants in nineteenth-century Britain. As witnessed not only by the burgeoning historiography of the subject but also by the growth of specialist courses on the Irish in Britain in universities and colleges.
This documentary history, the first of its kind, seeks to support and inform the scholarly study of the experiences of Irish men and women in Britain between 1815 and 1914 by reference to a wide range of contemporary sources. It examines the Irish experience in Britain thematically, by reference to migration, settlement, employment, social conditions (poverty, public health, housing and crime), religious identities, and contemporary perceptions.
Each chapter comprises a commentary, which provides a contextual framework for the analysis of the sources that follow; a selection of primary sources; and a series of end-notes, which point to further reading. The book also includes a bibliographical essay on primary sources and a comprehensive bibliography.

The Process of Community Health Education and Promotion
ASIN: 0306467925 |
Book Description
The discipline of epidemiology provides a methodology for perceiving the world and relating to the communities whose health and disease patterns need to be understood. Forensic epidemiology extends our understanding to community's injuries and those alleged to be responsible. This much needed resource focuses on the use of the epidemiology in the legal context, using case studies to illustrate the issues raised. This work includes discussion of:
- epidemiology in the courtroom;
- epidemiology, legislation and rulemaking;
- law, epidemiology and community organization and advocacy;
- epidemiology, law and social context.
This text challenges the boundaries about what epidemiology is and how it is to be used to make a contribution to the groups it studies. In turn, a more complete understanding of the populations, diseases and the systems that underlie and shape the research is reached. This book will be of value to the student studying in public health, environmental health and medical programs, law students as well as professional researchers.
Customer Reviews:
Review from The Journal of Legal Medicine.......2003-12-11
"Case Studies in Forensic Epidemiology is an important and valuable contribution to the literature in this field. It is an interesting, well organized, and easy to read book that continues Dr. Loue's good work in bridging the gap between the scientific and legal communities. The case studies chosen for this book highlight the impact and importance of this emerging profession to the fields of science, health care, and the law and to the welfare of society more broadly."
