One of the foremost practitioners of New Urbanism, Peter Calthorpe, an urban designer and architect based in Berkeley, California, offers one of the most coherent and persuasive arguments for moving the United States away from sprawl and toward more compact, mixed-use, economically diverse, and ecologically sound communities. This book presents 24 of Calthorpe's regional urban plans, in which towns are organized so that residents can be less dependent upon their cars and can walk, bike, or take public transportation between work, school, home, and shopping. This book is not just for architects and urban planners, but for all concerned citizens interested in developing a cohesive, feasible vision of the sustainable city of the future.

Regarding issues of urban sprawl Visit Sprawl Net, at Rice University. It's under construction, but it should be an interesting resource. Check out the traffic in the land of commuting. And, finally, enjoy Los Angeles: Revisiting the Four Ecologies.

2 out of 5 stars A Small Step.......2002-06-12

The one point in favor of this book is that it promotes a much-needed land use concept: Plan and build near transit. The critical downfall of the book is that it perpetuates the auto-centric lifestyle. While Europe and Asia are beginning to perfect pedestrian districts around their transit stops, the best that we Americans can do is to simply build residential units with 2 parking spaces each near metro stops. Too much land (typically 40%) is wasted in providing for streets, alleys, driveways, and the large number of parking spaces for each vehicle.

Such a design is still auto-centric if it makes automobile use the quickest and easiest way to shop at [a physical store] versus providing a pedestrian environment to walk 2 blocks to shop at a Mom & Pop store. Pedestrian environments with local grocery/pharmacy, schools, offices, day-care, sports fields, and other weekly needs are going to be able to eliminate 90% of automotive travel requirements. The other 10% can be easily provided through carsharing, a fast growing market in 21 North American cities now. Parking structures on the periphery of the district provides parking for carsharing and private automobiles (though the latter is retained by a modest percentage of households).

A book that envisions the progression of cities to pedestrian/transit use is Carfree Cities, by J.H. Crawford. There are also many websites that describe the many carfree areas already in place in Europe and Asia, whose residents require very little in the way of imported oil.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2000-05-02

This work is terrific if one is interested at all in the way in which cities could be developed. The ideas which Calthorpe presents are revolutionary and instrumental if one wishes to gain any sort of idea of the concepts and ideas proposed by "New Urbanism". His explanation of his Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is vital in understanding the difference between these developments and traditional versions. His use of specific examples makes the work that much better as it becomes more tangible and less simply theory. I would highly recomend this book to anyone involved in any sort of urban or city planning or simply interested in cities themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for the Kodak Camera Collector.......2007-05-13

This book is a great resource for the Kodak Camera Collector. Easy to follow, lots of illustrations and helpfull information to identify vintage cameras. I have just started collecting Kodak cameras and found this book along with the "Collectors Guide to Kodak Cameras" a paperback by Jum & Joan McKeown very usefull in identifying years and camera types.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-05-09

Along with the Kodak book by Jim McKeown, the information on Kodak cameras in Brian Coe's book is an invaluable resource about the history of those cameras. An amazing assortment of Kodak cameras are listed, with an tremendous amount of detail on production years, film sizes, etc. It's not concerned with value as much as production history, which is often information that is hard to find. If you collect vintage Kodak cameras, or just have an interest in their history, this is a valuable addition to your library.

5 out of 5 stars It's the best book about Kodak cameras there is!.......2003-11-30

The accuracy of the information about Kodak cameras is the best there is! It's an invaluable resource about the history of Kodak cameras. Almost all the cameras made, around the world, are listed with manufacturing, film types, production years, etc.......info with great images. This is a first quality book.
I've used it as one of the main resources for creating The Brownie Camera Page website.
It's not a book to find the value or worth of these cameras but to find out the factual history.

4 out of 5 stars An impressive collection of Kodak cameras.......1997-04-03

As someone who collects Kodak cameras, this book - while hard to find - is worth every penny. Coe's resources from being curator of the Kodak museum are perhaps the most enviable of any camera collector. While not every model is chronicled, a serious attempt has been made to provide an impressive amount of domestic AND foreign models. This contrasts McKeown's Price Guide in that McKeown primarily lists domestics. I was pleasantly surprised to know that there were many foreign models which I still require to complete my collections. jdfix@thompson-grp.com (Joe Fix)

        Book Description

Freda Kirchwey--writer, editor, publisher, opinionmaker, feminist, wife, and mother--was a salient figure in twentieth-century America, a beacon for liberals and activists of her era. A journalist with The Nation from 1918 to 1955--owner, editor, and publisher after 1937--she was an advocate of advanced ideas about sexual freedom and birth control and a tireless foe of fascism. The quintessential new woman, she combined a private and highly visible public life. In this first full-scale biography of Kirchwey, Sara Alpern weaves the strands of gender-related issues with larger social explorations. An early feminist, from a privileged and progressive background, Kirchwey was determined to enjoy both career and marriage, but the early deaths of two of her three sons and strained relations with her husband led to self-doubt about her identity. Yet despite any hidden misgivings, her humanitarianism and outstanding journalistic and critical gifts projected her onto the larger stage of public life. Alpern richly describes Kirchwey's extraordinary work editing The Nation, one of the longest surviving American liberal journals, and shaping public opinion on domestic and international affairs. Kirchwey focused on large political and international issues--the Spanish Civil War, democracy versus fascism and Nazism, pacifism and collective security, the plight of refugees and Zionism, McCarthyism and censorship, and, finally, the peaceful employment of atomic power. Freda Kirchwey's life story introduces a remarkable woman to a new generation struggling with personal and career goals as it recalls the efflorescence of liberalism for an older generation of readers.

        Book Description

This collection of interviews celebrates women's participation in national and private expeditions to Antarctica. From the first women scientists to visit Macquarie Island in 1959 to contemporary explorers, this book presents the deep-seated longings of women to join Antarctic expeditions, the barriers they have had to overcome, and the raw accounts of women's experiences as a minority in tight human communities. These women talk in detail about their impact in a field where men traditionally marked out the territory-physically, socially, and psychologically-and discuss what attracted them to embark on their journeys.

1 out of 5 stars The worst unreadable tripe.......2003-11-13

This is a terrible book that could had potential. Arguably women in antarctica have as much interest and stories to share as men. Unfortunatly this author, an unabashed feminist, just lists lots of boring facts and petty acheivements of women. Do we really care who the first women who swore at the south pole was? Or the first women to smoke a cigarrette at the pole? No. A terrible book, useless tripe, hateful.

1 out of 5 stars Feminist Textbook History Lesson.......2001-12-01

I didn't even finish this book. It seems like it is just a list of facts about woman who have visited Antarctica. I was hoping for more stories than facts. I was very bored. Also the writer appears to be a strong feminist.

Anderegg hits the bull's eye with his latest must-read book for anyone who shares his interest in aviation, the Air Force, fighter pilots, precision guided munitions, aerial combat, the Vietnam War, or the Gulf War. Far from being dry history, this chronicle was written by an insider who participated in the transformation of America's fighter force. He makes the fighter culture come alive with vivid descriptions of both the plays and the players.

Both a graduate of and a returning instructor to the Weapons School, Anderegg has transitioned from accomplished fighter pilot to laudable historian. As a narrative researcher and writer, he is second to none. This book rivals his first, Ash Warriors, for first place among the best of military history. He even includes the true story of Jeremiah Weed!

The best of its kind I've ever read! I swear on the pinky switch.

              Book Description

Histories of heresy published in the early modern period laid the foundation for our attitudes toward difference, deviance, and defiance of orthodoxies. We cannot understand modern notions of tolerance without understanding the mentalities that led to persecution, and how they changed. Many of these mentalities were forged and reforged in polemics against and histories of heresy. This is the first volume to analyze and compare a broad range of histories of heresy written in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its chapters show how authors could mean to justify persecution of heretics, or oppose it. Readers could read these volumes in accord with or against the intentions of their authors. The cumulative effect is a better understanding of the complex and contentious history of the historiography of heresy in this period, and a sense for its lasting effects.
