Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal is another of his inspired essays in sweepingly curved building forms, this time celebrating flight. Paradoxically, while the terminal's layout and equipment were technically advanced and carefully thought-out, its form was arbitrarily sculptural rather than structurally rational. The explosive growth of passenger traffic overloaded the capacity of a building whose form defied expansion. Today, the TWA Terminal can be seen as a monument to a simpler, more intimate, and more gracious era of commercial flight. The terminal is just one of the modernist icons that preeminent architectural photographer Ezra Stoller documented in a career that spanned more than half a century. Now retired, Stoller has been reassembling his work for permanent (rather than periodical) publication. The TWA Terminal is one of a series published by Princeton Architectural Press that presents individual buildings in depth in a small-size volume. The photographs are not only stunning, they have particular documentary value in that Stoller shot them when the buildings were new--in this case, 37 years ago.
The series has been designed for relative affordability, and its subjects are well chosen. Each volume includes a very brief preface by Stoller setting out his relationship to the building and a fairly short critical, historical, analytical essay. Buttressed by about a dozen endnotes, the essays occupy a middle ground between informal and scholarly writing. They are followed by 50 to 60 duotone photos and a few plan drawings. This is an expert look at an extraordinary building and well worth readers' serious attention. --John Pastier
Book Description
The Building Blocks series presents icons of modern architecture as interpreted by the most significant architectural photographers of our time. The first four volumes feature the work of Ezra Stoller, whose photography has defined the way postwar architecture has been viewed by architects, historians, and the public at large. The buildings inaugurating this series-Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal, Wallace Harrison's United Nations complex, Le Corbusier's Chapel at Ronchamp, and Paul Rudolph's Yale Art and Architecture Building-all have bold sculptural presences ideally suited to Stoller's unique vision. Each cloth-bound book in the series contains at least 80 pages of rich duotone images. Taken just after the completion of each project, these photographs provide a unique historical record of the buildings in use, documenting the people, fashions, and furnishings of the period. Through Stoller's photographs, we see these buildings the way the architects wanted us to know them. In the preface to each volume Stoller tells of his personal relationship with the architect of each project and recounts his experience photographing it. Brief introductions reveal the unique history of each building; also included are newly drawn plans.
Customer Reviews:
Good quality and price, good value.......2002-11-21
It's an extraordinary building, and the photography is of a quality worthy of the architecture.
If I could change this book, I would make it larger. Its small page size means you have to look closely to see the images well. I would rather it be big enough to be a coffee table book, and would be willing to pay more. Otherwise, it's an excellent photo-documentary of a brilliant and facinating building. I keep it visable on my desk.
fantastic but small.......2000-03-28
i just bought this book and essentially it's great, and i recommend it. if you are familiar with the TWA terminal at JFK airport you'll be shocked at the loss of grandeur time has inflicted upon the interior. the pictures will show you the full beauty of the architecture which has been diluted over the decades by disrepair, clutter, and restructuring. in any case, the photos themselves are a stunning compliment to the marvelous, chic design on display. The images echo the sleek modernist space station in "2001", but with an exacting, crisp interlocking of elements. which brings me to the drawback--the photos are too small by far, and often spread over the center crease--and this is not a book that folds flat open easily. i'm sure there are other books with these pictures, but i don't know what they are. if you research it, bear in mind that this book does contain a preface and article that are quite illuminating, and the compact nature of the book does make it kind of darling.

Wonderful introduction to the world of prints.......1997-12-19
This book is a must-buy for those seriously interested in taking up print collecting or indeed wishing to gain experience in appreciating prints. Its coverage is magnificent in its breadth and detail. When I purchased from Amazon, I bought two copies - one copy was requested by an art historian - high praise indeed!

Customer Reviews:
Amateur advice.......2006-06-28
If you are an amateur this book is OK. If you want more advanced advice and great pictures to look at there are better choices. The book is also very dated and needs an update to cover digital cameras.
Good Book, Good Information, And Nice To Look At.......2005-05-03
The book has some great photos to look at. Of course this isn't enough reason to buy this book, otherwise you would just get a coffee table book. Fortunately the book is full of good tips and advice. The subjects are broken down in to one or two page explanations. I found this convienant and easy to read. It allows you to skip the topics you're not interested in or come back to them later.
I think the book is designed for beginners with some experience behind them. That would describe me. The book didn't boor me with stuff I already know. There is just enough technical jargon to help. The book is written in a pretty straight forward way.
If the book has a weak spot it would be the minimum information on digital cameras. That isn't really a problem though as modern digitals mimic film cameras.
I like to carry this book on trips and read through it frequently.
Decent ideas and tips.......2003-07-28
This is a good, concise book for brushing up and reviewing before you travel and it's also useful for suggestions and ideas when shooting while travelling.
Nice book for tips... Not technical.......2002-01-15
I love technical books; so I bought this book looking for some technical advices on "how to" take pictures when traveling: landscapes, low light conditions, using flashes, etc. When received the book, I found this is not a technical book, in this book you can find useful ideas and comments about "what", "where" and "when" to take nice pictures when traveling. I recommend this as a nice and "light" book to read written in an easy way to all kind of readers.
Not the best choice in travel photography.......2001-09-01
I have several travel photography books. This is the worst I've ever bought. Although it has many pictures, in my opinion, the text is very poor.

It's been some 20 years since a book of medical literature has captured the interest, let alone the excitement, of young people considering a career in medicine or biology. Racing to the Beginning of the Road is a welcome end to that trend. Author Dr. Robert Weinberg, director of the oncology research lab at the Whitehead Institute of Technology, relates several theories on the origins of cancer. He recounts scientific breakthroughs throughout the story and paints delightfully human portrayals of the scientists involved.
Book Description
Just as The Double Helix told of the historic effort to discover the structure of the DNA molecule, this book recounts the inside story of the discoveries that revolutionized our understanding of cancer. Written by one of America's leading scientists in this effort, here is a compelling, candid account of scientific progress.
Customer Reviews:
It reads like a thriller!!.......1999-04-22
This was a wonderfully written book. I know nothing of science, and was mesmerized by the writing and the information imparted. Weinberg writes like a novelist, but has the impeccable scientific background to convey how important basic research was to the discovery of how cancer occurred on the molecular level. It gave me a great appreciation for research, and hope for the future of cancer treatment.
Academic research in molecular biology brought down to earth.......1998-11-28
This book puts to rest the debate of whether basic science should receive as much priority as clinical science. Himself one of the most prominent figures in cancer research, Weinberg writes with captivating (and often amusing) narrative power how a very simple basic curiosity - how do we build a cancer cell from scratch? - has led to revolutionary views of cancer. Peter Gorner, the Tribune writer, once wrote "Science would like you to think that it marches steadily forward in white-coated splendor, but the truth is more mundane - fits and starts are the usual rhythms, with flashes of insight wasted by years of wrong-headedness...". In that sense, Weinberg captures successfully the frustration and maddening uncertainty every scientist has to endure to test their hypotheses as well as the jubilation and excitement that come when pleasant accidents occur, leading to the ultimate breakthroughs. More importantly, Weinberg highlights the critical intellectual input from scientists who cares more about the basic biological processes than curing diseases. These results from the basic scientific research have, unexpectedly, solved many central questions in cancer biology and AIDS. Many stories presented in the book thus challenge the currently prevailing wisdom of "disease-directed" scientific research. If you want to know how science operates in reality, this is THE book.
Brilliant scientist, brilliant author unfolds cancer story.......1998-09-07
A true scientist turns spell-binding author as he unfolds the fascinating mystery of cancer and the blow by blow drama of the pursuit of its secrets. This is a page turner as much any novel you can find. Why? Because truth is stranger than fiction and a lot more relevant--if half of American males will have cancer before they die, and if 1,500 people are already dying every day in America from this mysterious enemy. If you are concerned about cancer, or you think one of your friends or children could do battle in this area, then this is the book for you and for them.
Book Description
Warfare in Ancient Greece assembles a wide range of source material and introduces the latest scholarship on the Greek experience of war. The author has carefully selected key texts, many of them not previously available in English, and provided them wiht comprehensive commentaries.
For the Greek polis, warfare was a more usual state of affairs than peace. The documents assembled here recreate the social and historical framework in which ancient Greek warfare took place--over a period of more than a thousand years from the Homeric Age to Alexander the Great. Special attention is paid to attitudes and feelings of the Greek towards defeated peoples and captured cities.
Complete with notes, index, and bibliography,
Warfare in Ancient Greece will provide students of Ancient and military history with an unprecedented survey of relevant materials.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent sourcebook.......2004-05-23
This is an excellent collection of exercepts from ancient sources on the nature of warfare in ancient Greece. Excellent resource for ancient history teachers.
Good resource.......2000-06-26
Although not a large volume, Sage's book is a great substitute for hours of research. He extracts information on equipment, tactics, and organization from multiple ancient records (Thucydides, Arrian, Xenophon, Homer, etc) and uses them to create a very thorough picture of ancient warfare and ancient armies.

Book Description
"Stafford Beer is undoubtedly among the world's most provocative, creative, and profound thinkers on the subject of management, and he records his thinking
with a flair that is unmatched. His
writing is as much art as it is science.
He is the most viable system I know."
Dr Russell L Ackoff, The Institute for
Interactive Management, Pennsylvania.
USA.
This is a highly original
book both in content and format. It
presents thirteen `arguments for change',
these are linked by a personal
commentary, and by a deeper,
`metalinguistic', commentary. Platform
for Change is completely
self-contained, does not deal at all with
the nature of viable systems, but is
directed towards the hope that our
planet may yet remain viable--and the
human race survive.

This digital document is a journal article from Research Policy, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This paper proposes an integrative framework for understanding the process by which a technology achieves dominance when ''battling'' against other technological designs. We focus on describing the different stages of a dominance battle and propose five battle milestones that in turn define five key phases in the process. We review the literature from several disciplines to identify the key firm- and environment-level factors that affect the outcome of a technology battle and posit that the relative importance of each factor will vary depending on the phase considered. Our framework complements and extends existing literature and has implications both for theory and for management practice.

Description:
The Oligocene-Miocene represents, for the Cenozoic, a period of extensive reef development and is characterized by a number of important changes influencing both carbonate-producing biota and architecture of reefs and carbonate platforms. The Mediterranean region, in particular, was characterized during this time by a complex palaeogeographic and climatic history with stepwise transition towards cooler conditions, biotic turnovers and the complete disappearance of zooxanthellate corals and reefs at the very end of the Miocene. A comparative study of two reef complexes that in different times (Chattian and Messinian) grew in the same physiographic and depositional setting, i.e. the stable, undeformed eastern margin of the Apulia Platform (eastern coast of the Salento Peninsula, southern Italy), highlights evolutionary, ecological and climatic changes that differentiate Oligocene and Late Miocene reef biota of the region. In particular, the study illustrates how different reef biotic assemblages can produce different reef types, frameworks and growth fabrics along reef tracts and reef slopes. The Chattian reef is characterized by a homogeneous reef-building biota, being largely dominated by a high diversity and abundant coral fauna associated with a moderate presence of coralline algae, and thus forming a single reef type. In contrast, the Messinian reef shows a very low coral diversity but several other reef-building components with abundant and varied secondary reef builders (coralline algae, Halimeda, encrusting foraminifera, bryozoans, serpulids and microbial associations). The reef, therefore, is characterized by a heterogeneous reef-building biota that forms different frameworks and growth fabrics. The feedback to the environment of this different biotic composition is very evident in the two reefs and especially in the slope. During the Chattian a slope, mainly consisting of gravity-displaced debris, resulted from the abundant production of reef rubble, associated with a relatively poor framebuilding capacity. Conversely, during the Messinian, a biologically stabilized slope resulted from proliferation of a variety of binding organisms that strongly colonized the substrate. The climatic cooling which occurred during the Miocene may be considered the main controlling factor of the diversity turnovers and changes that affected the coral fauna, but other environmental factors, such as changes in nutrient regimes and in hydrodynamic conditions of the sea associated with the emerging Apennine chain, may have played a role in determining differences in the reef biota and in the reef facies.

This digital document is a journal article from Land Use Policy, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Over recent years, the scientific community has developed different modelling methodologies of land use/cover change (LUCC) depending on their intended use, and also on the scale of investigation, disciplinary background and scientific tradition of the research teams. Consequently, each LUCC model has its own potential and constraints with respect to the needs and expectations of land use planners and policy makers. Faced with the issue of integrated management of natural resources from local to regional scales, agricultural research can benefit from reconciling top-down and bottom-up approaches to LUCC modelling. Three modelling methodologies belonging to these two LUCC approaches were applied in the province of Bac Kan in northern Vietnam. The multi-agent model SAMBA was developed through an adaptive, bottom-up process while LUPAS and CLUE contributed to a top-down process. Applying these three methodologies at the same research site allowed a critical evaluation of their respective utility for land use analysis and planning. They played complementary roles in bridging knowledge gaps and increasing interactions between stakeholders along the continuum from research to development and policy formulation. Combined use of these modelling methodologies should be promoted when complex natural resource management issues at multiple scales need to be tackled.

Description:
Significantly different Guadalupian-Late Triassic patterns are observed in the evolution of attached and isolated carbonate platforms of the southwestern Tethys (Oman Mountains). Close to the rim of the attached Arabian platform, carbonates of the Saiq and Mahil Formations reveal an almost complete Permian-Triassic sedimentary record. Guadalupian-Changhsingian 3rd order sequences consist of fossiliferous transgressive systems tracts and monotonous highstand systems tracts with mud/wackestone and coral bafflestone. The youngest Changhsingian beds are bioturbated floatstone with crinoids, sponges and bryozoans. All sediments indicate a healthy, tropical carbonate production. Above, a unique facies change begins with a pyrite-encrusted omission surface. Greenish mudstone rich in authigenic pyrite infills the relief of the unconformity and is overlain by clastic sediment and by laminated, microbialite-bearing carbonate. Unfossiliferous sediments and seafloor cements indicate a change in carbonate production towards abiotic processes. Prevailing anoxic conditions were interrupted by seven oxic event beds, as indicated either by low-diversity and small-sized ichnotaxa or by shell beds with low-diversity bivalve and crinoid assemblages. By comparison with published data, the described sedimentary sequence can be assigned to the Changhsingian-earliest Griesbachian. Beginning probably with the Anisian, bioturbated Griesbachian-Dienerian recovery period and the unconformity below to the latest grain-supported sediment textures mark the return to biogenic tropical carbonate production under oxic conditions. The Middle-Late Triassic carbonate platform consists of stacked high-frequency shallowing upward cycles. By contrast, carbonate production of Neo-Tethyan isolated platforms was discontinuous and interrupted by a large gap. Guadalupian deposits of the Al Jil Formation consist of bioclastic limestone typical of a tropical carbonate production. The uppermost bed, an impoverished bioclastic packstone capped by an unconformity, marks the onset of platform drowning which resulted from the end-Guadalupian mass extinction. Above, a polymict breccia witnessed rift pulses of the Neo-Tethys. The overlying pelagic mud- and packstone contains radiolarians and rare foraminifera of Lopingian age, and overlying microbialites. In the Carnian, tropical shallow-water carbonate production restarted with a low-relief platform and culminated in a Norian-Rhaetian reef-rimmed platform. Stacked Lofer cycles dominated the inner platform of Jebel Kawr (Misfah Formation). We here propose a differential onset and severity of the Late Permian mass extinctions for carbonate platforms. On the Arabian Plate, tropical carbonate production collapsed after the end-Lopingian mass extinction and was replaced by microbialites and sea-floor cements during the earliest Triassic. After approximately six million years, tropical shallow-water carbonate production resumed in the Middle Triassic. Neo-Tethyan isolated platforms drowned shortly after the end-Guadalupian mass extinction and did not recover before the Late Triassic. Absence of shallow-water limestone suggests that carbonate production of isolated platforms ceased for about 30 million years, a period exceeding the recovery of most marine ecosystems.
