Mexico's churches and conventos display a unique blend of European and native styles. Missionary Mendicant friars arrived in New Spain shortly after Cortes's conquest of the Aztec empire in 1521 and immediately related their own European architectural and visual arts styles to the tastes and expectations of native Indians. Right from the beginning the friars conceived of conventos as a special architectural theater in which to carry out their proselytizing. Over four hundred conventos were established in Mexico between 1526 and 1600, and more still in New Mexico in the century following, all built and decorated by native Indian artisans who became masters of European techniques and styles even as they added their own influence. The author argues that these magnificent sixteenth and seventeenth-century structures are as much part of the artistic patrimony of American Indians as their pre-Conquest temples, pyramids, and kivas. Mexican Indians, in fact, adapted European motifs to their own pictorial traditions and thus made a unique contribution to the worldwide spread of the Italian Renaissance.

The author brings a wealth of knowledge of medieval and Renaissance European history, philosophy, theology, art, and architecture to bear on colonial Mexico at the same time as he focuses on indigenous contributions to the colonial enterprise. This ground-breaking study enriches our understanding of the colonial process and the reciprocal relationship between European friars and native artisans.

Mexican Art.......2006-11-29

I loved this book, and am currently doing something I've done only twice in my life. I finished it and have turned back to the beginning to read it again.
Not only is the material absolutely fascinating, but the author is a lovely writer. I go to Mexico frequently, and this book will change and profoundly deepen the way I look at so many of the old churches and convents I've always enjoyed visiting.
The author should consider organizing a tour of the places covered in this work. I'd love to go.

Watercolor: Let the medium do it is one of the better watercolor books I have read. I am currently a student in the visual arts and design field at a college in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am always looking for ways to improve my craft, and so visit the library frequently. I have perused many books and take what I learn and apply it to my studies. The book "watercolor: let the medium do it" was one of the most informative books I have come across. So much so that I came to Amazon.com to see if I could purchase it. Of course they had it, and I will order the book. I love the pictures and the step by step instructions that are located in the book. This probably isn't a good book for someone who has absolutely no knowledge about watercolor, but is an excellent book for intermediate students. There are ideas in this book that I have never even considered. I would rate this book very high on an art student/dabbler's reading list. Wonderful book!

Patpong After Dark: And Dark It Is.......2004-01-26

Nick Nostitz in PATPONG: BANGKOK'S TWILIGHT ZONE has written a photo-essay volume that casts some much needed light on a city that paradoxically trumps its myriad sins in a much lighted way but the city itself, its non-sex worker population, and its sustaining ethos and culture needs the very sort of attention that books like this one too often skimp on. The result, therefore, is a re-examination of a city that is probably the most sex-driven in the world. Many of the photos are of good looking Thai prostitutes in mini-skirts, but the cumulative impact grows progessively more saddened and less erotic. The photos are accompanied by small commentaries that shed some minor light as to why these sex trade women peddle themselves. Nostitz indicates that Bangkok had learned that since the end of the second world war its primary coin had to be its women. The corruption of the various regimes since then and the ubiquitousness of rapacious American servicemen and Japanese male tourists fueled the demand for the very women whose salacious pictures form the book. As I took in one picture after another, I could see both the surface allure and the less obvious repellence of the sex trade. Clearly, easy and cheap sex with bar girls, hookers, strippers, and transsexuals are the upside of what a male vistor with liberal spending habits can expect. The downside is the less obvious flirtation with HIV and the general slimy feeling that one gets when one uses money to obtain cheaply what one cannot get more honestly in one's home country. PATPONG: BANKOK'S TWILIGHT ZONE manages to explore both pictorially and verbally the allure that sleaze has for the decent if ignorant male tourist with excessive dollars in his pocket.

Thoughtfully and masterfully done. A pleasure to read........1999-11-14

Many modern comic books, movies, books, etc. present the audience with simplistic morality plays and shallow, forgetable characters. Against this backdrop Scott McCloud stands out for his artistic integrity and his ability to weave so much thought, so many aspects of the human condition, and so much entertainment into 25 odd thin black and white pages.

In trying to articulate what I like about the Zot series I constantly come back to the same idea: despite the series running for several years, the story seems to have only started, the characters have only begun to reveal themselves. This sense of richness and potentiality, entertwined with a deceptive simplicity, is a rare thing.

P.S. I would reccommend that any new readers space out the reading of each issue in this volume by at least a day. Originally, each were released 3 months apart or so, and though I waited eagerly for each issue, I also savoured the time in between. I cannot help but thinking that reading them all in one sitting could blur the story elements and reduce the overall impact.

Technical yet interesting account of SOE training at Camp X.......2003-05-14

A very interesting book full of information that you will in all odds never use.

However, we need to remember the past. The SOE did not set Europe ablaze as Churchill had hoped but undoubtedly made a difference in the second world war. The training methods developed at Camp X still have a strong influence today. I have seen some of the hand to hand combat techniques in newer publications reproduced almost word for word. A variation Fairbairn's knife technique is still taught in the military.

Much of the information is adaptable to day to day life. Being aware of ones situation, how to find out if you are being followed and what to do about it and other situations are covered. While none of us will probably have to kill a brothel full of German solders it is still rather interesting to see how it would be done.

Don't expect smooth readability. This is a collection of technical documents and reads like it. It is not entertaining style but still a fascinating record of one of the most interesting sections of history.

One of the most promising institutional innovations introduced by the Treaty on the European Union signed in Maastricht and by the reform of the European Community which accompanied it has been a new legal status granted equally to all Member States nationals: European Citizenship. The recent Treaty of Amsterdam has since improved and broadened this new status. Political community may be seen to consist of two main elements -- citizenship on the one hand and sovereignty on the other, so that if we have citizens, there must be a sovereign. This is the reason why, once a European citizenship is established, one may say that, through a kind of `constitutive act', a European supranational society has been founded. In a democratic society, citizens are both the holders and the recipients of sovereignty, so that the scope of citizenship defines the area where sovereignty is operative and from which it may draw its legitimacy. Citizenship should necessarily refer to a society endowed with powers of political self-determination (that is sovereignty). European citizenship is therefore extremely relevant, since it has a `foundational' character and signals the emergence of a new polity. This book deals with each of these questions and covers all aspects of European citizenship. It is entirely devoted to analysing this new and promising status, studied from a multiplicity of perspectives by a number of outstanding scholars and researchers from most of the member states of the European Union.
