To the point with both black and white and color illustrations.......2006-09-14

Frank Webb has written a well organized, thoughtful work on artistic composition that anyone involved in the arts could benefit from.

There are rich colorful examples of paintings (mostly watercolor it would appear) as well as more diagramatic nuts and bolts type examples in black and white. He gets his points about composition across like no other author that I've seen in print. Not that other authors aren't worth checking out too. He describes and illustrates things like "interlocking shapes" and "shape passages" for example, in a way that you're not likely to forget. Ditto for the rest of the book.

His more structured pages show charts with various design elements (such as shape, line direction, tone, pattern, etc.) illustrated in the simplest most memorable possible way. The only other material that I've read about composition that was this organized and thorough was information that I downloaded from the internet. That information was a lot more expensive and I had to print it myself.

This is my book so I'm not unbiased in my giving it 5 stars, but disregard the inaccurate Amazon description above. Here's the deal: It's a collection of real online male personal ad photos with the figures obscured, and then my critique of the room's decor behind them. Fight Club author, Chuck Palahniuk included Obscene Interiors in his list of Top Ten Books of the past 10 years - Yay! And Dave Eggers had this to say, "Obscene Interiors is not only a cruelly brilliant idea, but it's executed with great cunning and even some warmth."

What a hilarious book. Page after page of men who are simply oblivious. These guys have no shame in exposing themselves with a variety of backdrops, ranging from tacky, scary to out and out gross. This is like a book of favorite cartoons - you just keep picking it up.

What were they thinking?! I mean, I can understand the roguish impulse to shoot naughty pictures of yourself and even to post them on the Internet. I've done it a time or two myself. But those lamps! And that wretched sofa!

This is a delightfully diverting little book. If there's a flaw, it's that it's too short by far. You can't put it down and you can't look away from these decorating disasters so, in the end, you want more, more, more deliciously awful decor to punish your eyes.

Or perhaps I'm just some sort of weird interior design masochist. It's possible.

Another beatufully illustrated pokemon book. You just can't beat the drawings in these.

In this book, the author found a very clever way to explain why people hardly ever see Mew. It turns out there's a whole group of Mews living in the heavens, but they have one cardinal rule: Don't show yourself to a human unless you have a good reason! However, one Mew who's shown himself to kids lots of times has a dilemma when a kid he's recently shown himself to is ridiculed by his friends when he says he saw a Mew. However, the other Mews realize that sometimes it's more important to help a friend than obey the rules, and they come up with a plan to help the little boy.

good introductory book but increasingly dated.......2000-04-02

The sections presenting the basic physics that parameterize detection and weapons operation give the reader a very good introduction to the principles of operation for various general weapons systems, as well as the capabilities and limitations of a general weapons system.

However, the weapons systems actually described are if not actually obsolete, obsolescent. This is especially true with regard to the C4I and ECM/ESM, EO, and detection systems. There is no mention of stealth, GPS, Aegis, or JTIDS. SAR and MTI sytems should have more emphasis, as does the section on digital computers.

In short, this is a good introduction to basic physical principles that systems operate under, but an increasingly dated explanation as to the way systems operate and a very dated description of operating systems. This is a good idea for a book, but needs a thorough rewrite at this point (April 1, 2000).

A lantern in quantitative methods.......2005-08-28

Irving Fisher(1892)said that "mathematics is the lantern by what was before dimly visable now looms up in firm, bold outlines". Unfortunatley, most texts on any area of mathematics fail to enlighten students but rather tend to confuse. Not this one however! Feinstein & Thomas present the subject of quantitative methods in a most readable and enjoyable way. I couldn't put the book down. As an introduction to concepts and techniques it works extremely well with clear and unencumbered presentation, plenty of exlplanation and straightforward diagrams.
F & S manage to make their subject interesting. That is the mark of a true teacher.
